Could those with babies or young children just quickly fill in this questionnaire for me please? I am making a pop-up book for my graphics project, and need to have done a questionnaire for my research piece. Thanks.

Q. How old is your child?

Q. Is your child male or female?

Q. What type of children’s book catches your/their eye?

Q. Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child?

Q. Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child?

Q. Does your child listen to audio books?

Q. Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay?

Q. What’s your child’s favourite colour?

Q. Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books?

Q. Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest?

Q. Does your child like different textures in a book?

Q. Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few?

I'll answer this one for each of my kids

Q. How old is your child?
2
Q. Is your child male or female?
male
Q. What type of children’s book catches your/their eye?
any bright, color pictures, preferably with trains
Q. Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child?
absolutely
Q. Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child?
It depends on the content. If it is encouraging them to give up eating meat and wearing animal products then No. If it simply about protecting our planet then yes
Q. Does your child listen to audio books?
yes
Q. Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay?
I would not pay more than $5 for a small board book or more than $10 for a larger children's book
Q. What’s your child’s favourite colour?
dark blue
Q. Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books?
As long as the font is big enough to read comfortably from a few feet away it doesn't matter much
Q. Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest?
I prefer books that are no larger in dimensions than a piece of printer paper. He has an easier time with larger books.
Q. Does your child like different textures in a book?
He did when he was younger. At this point he doesn't care anymore
Q. Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few?
At his age he seems to prefer fewer characters that he can keep track of.

Q. How old is your child?
4
Q. Is your child male or female?
male
Q. What type of children’s book catches your/their eye?
things that look adventurous like pirate ships, jungles, exotic lands, etc..
Q. Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child?
yes absolutely
Q. Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child?
it depends on the content. If it is pushing him to go vegetarian and avoid animal products then no. If it is simply about protecting our earth then yes.
Q. Does your child listen to audio books?
absolutely, every day
Q. Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay?
With him a little older I will pay a bit more for books. Probably no more than $15-20 for a good thick book though
Q. What’s your child’s favourite colour?
dark blue
Q. Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books?
font size is irrelevant NOW, but once he begins reading I will look for slightly larger than usual print
Q. Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest?
size doesn't make a difference
Q. Does your child like different textures in a book?
no, it doesn't make a difference
Q. Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few?
he prefers lots of different characters with developed histories

I am making a pop-up book for my graphics project That sounds like a lot of fun.

How old is your child? 2

Is your child male or female? male

What type of children’s book catches your/their eye? anything with pictures, especially pictures of animals

Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child? at this age just about any book can be educational. We don't just read the books we look at the pictures and point to things (animals, objects, colors, etc.).

Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child? yes

Does your child listen to audio books? no

Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay? yes. It depends on the book, I think most of his books we've paid less than $10 for

What’s your child’s favourite colour? I'm not sure. He likes orange and green a lot

Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books? No. I think bigger is better for reading with a 2 year old though.

Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest? Small- mid sized books are easiest. Books that are too large are hard to hold and get frustrating.

Does your child like different textures in a book? He cares more about the pictures than the textures

Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few? Either. It's most fun when the pictures differ greatly from page to page. We really "study" each page and when each page is similar to the last it gets boring. It doesn't matter if there is only one character though, as long as that character is doing something different on each page. (I hope that makes sense.)

Q. How old is your child?
3 1/2 years, 2 years, & almost 4 months

Q. Is your child male or female?
The older 2 are female. The baby is male.

Q. What type of children’s book catches your/their eye?
Books with bright, colorful illustrations.

Q. Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child?
Coming from a teacher's perspective, all books are educational, in that they promote pre-reading and reading skills, so in that sense, my answer would be "yes." If you mean books that teach a particular concept, the answer would be "sometimes."

Q. Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child?
Possibly

Q. Does your child listen to audio books?
No.

Q. Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay?
Sometimes it is. We usually spend between $5-$10, but may spend more (around $15-$20) if it is a gift or a very significant book.

Q. What’s your child’s favourite colour?
3 1/2 y.o. likes green, 2 y.o. likes blue

Q. Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books?
Not necessarily. It has more to do with how easy it is to read. Overall, I prefer bigger, but not huge.

Q. Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest?
I don't think it really matters. My girls tend to sit in the floor with their books, anyway.

Q. Does your child like different textures in a book?
Very definitely, especially the younger ones. The oldest is beginning to outgrow that interest some.

Q. Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few?
I haven't noticed, but most of their books only have a few characters.

Q. How old is your child? Nearly 5

Q. Is your child male or female? Male

Q. What type of children’s book catches your/their eye? Lots, animal ones, ones with mommy/baby themes, construction types, etc.

Q. Are you more likely to buy a book which has an educational idea behind it for your child? IMO, books = educational

Q. Would you be interested in a book with an animal conservation theme behind it for your child? Yes, my child relates well to animal conservation/planet conservation, etc.

Q. Does your child listen to audio books? no.

Q. Is cost an important factor to you when buying children’s books? If so how much are you willing to pay? Probably depends on the book, but around USD $5

Q. What’s your child’s favourite colour? Yellow

Q. Does the font size make a difference to whether you buy it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller fonts for your child’s books? J is just getting comfortable with letter identification. So, larger font- and easy to read font, is important.

Q. Is the size of a children’s book an important factor to you? Does your child find bigger/smaller books easier? If so which one is easiest? He likes the little books and the large books, so, I don't think size is that important.

Q. Does your child like different textures in a book? Not so much anymore at 5.

Q. Does your child like lots of different characters in a book, or just a few? He may like a lot, but, I like a few to lessen the distraction.

Thanks everyone who did this :) It's been really useful... just typing up what I have found out from your answers etc now.....

That sounds like a lot of fun.
Yeah, I hope it will be. It's 60% of my exam as well. The problem is we have a lot of written/folder work to do which gets a bit complicated, but I am really looking foward to writing the story itself and doing the images etc :D
