I had posted a thread about a trip I made this week to some of our national parks.

I expressed my admiration for the job the federal government does in maintaining these national treasures.

Apparently, my admiration for the parks was offensive to some and was described as "trolling".

Apparently, the Dog House exists to talk about bizarre and horrible crimes and how terrible this country's government is.

An attempt to post a positive impression of our country is met with rudeness and scorn.

Got it.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but why would you have posted that in DH, if it was only your intention to extol the beauty of our national and natural wonders?

Wouldn't it have met with a better reception and have been viewed by more people if you had posted in General?

Maybe I missed something??????? :(

No matter where it was posted, it would be met with rudeness by a few
posters who seem bound & determined to pollute every thread they post
in.

I posted in the Dog House (and explained in the thread) because I would like to see some balance to the constant negativity about our government that is here.

My intention was not to
extol the beauty of our national and natural wonders One photo does that.

My intention was to point out (sorry extol doesn't work) the job our federal government does in maintaining it. And sadly, doing so seems to be very controversial!

With that being a "good thing" - that should have taken it out of DH and away from a naturally controversial area.

Again - JIMHO. I rest my case - enough said on my part.

I think that it was the comment about the expanding role of our federal government that blue was talking about. IMO, he may have felt that it made it sound like a political statement rather than referring to the beauty of our national parks.

The Dog House is the place for upsetting things, political discussion, and scary things. We should be able to talk about a variety of topics without people being concerned about personal attacks. Even when people disagree with each others' viewpoints, they should do so politely. The thing we all have in common here is that we treasure our pets, and that is the one thing that unites us.

I do think we should all be able to play together nicely.

And what if it was a political statement? I posted in the Dog House AGAIN...because in seeing the parks I realized that our government DOES some things very well. By the very use of the word "government" it is political.

I am not allowed to post a thought that involves politics without being denigated?

I will be eager to see "Mission Accomplished" posted again! But not hopeful.

Pomtzu's point, ES, and mine, too, is that if you were merely posting about the beauty of the national parks, then it probably wasn't DH worthy. That phrase of which we speak may have seemed incendiary to blue. However, to answer your question, no, you shouldn't be denigrated when posting a thought about politics. And the same is true of everyone else as well.

I happen to love state and national parks. We go camping quite often at the state parks up by Mt. Hood. The wonder of our national parks is that they are accessible to all of us - in prior times such wonders would have been off limits to the majority and reserved for the elite.

The parks are indeed a wonderful example of when a government of the people can actually do something that really benefits all the people, and not just the select few.

Our state government has its problems too, but one of the things they did years ago was to delclare that all of the Oregon beaches belonged to the public, and that you could not "own" the beach and ocean and prevent access to others. Pretty cool, huh?

ES. Dr. Goebbels would have been proud of your propoganda. Granted, I do understand what you were trying to do. Problem is, we are not the morons you assume we are.... Our history... LEARN it. Learn who our founders were. Learn what this country was really founded on, what made this country the power it WAS. When you really open your eyes, you will see why we are the way we are these days....

In my eyes, all you did with post #1 in the first thread was prove, again, how fond you are of authortarian figures... As long as they do what you think is OK.

So if I OWN beachfront property in Oregon, I have to let anybody on MY property?

LOL.

Let me clarify.
Yes, you can own and enjoy beachfront property with an ocean view that is your private property that doesn't allow tresspassing. What you cannot own is the actual beach.

Here's an explanation from the opb.org website.

In 1967 Governor Tom McCall signed the Beach Bill with great fanfare, calling it "one of the most far reaching measures of its kind enacted by any legislative body in the nation." The bill granted the public recreational rights to the dry sands of Oregon’s beaches all the way to the vegetation line.

But the fight to protect Oregon's beaches from private development and "No Trespassing" signs began around 1913 when Governor Oswald West designated Oregon's tidelands — the wet sand portion of the beach — as a public highway.

But in the 1960s, private developers along the coast began challenging the law saying that, in fact, the dry sand portion of the beach belonged to the upland owners. And, therefore, they could do whatever they wanted with the land — including erecting barricades to create "private beaches."

What ensued was a fight to save all of Oregon's beaches for public recreational use. The battle erupted into the hottest issue of the 1967 legislative session and created the greatest public response to any issue in Oregon's legislative history.

OK. As long as it is a State law, cool. Its a shady law, IMO. Government infringing on private property, but still... As long as it is a State law... cool. 10th Amendment and all that.

If I had the dough to own beachfront land, it would NOT be in Oregon. But that's just me. (Granted, i'd never own beachfront land anyway. 25,000 acres in Montana is more me. LOL)

Back to it... This law has to just KILL beachfront property values, eh?

The lakefront in Chicago is also ALL public...result of ordinances from after the Chicago Fire of...1871 I think?

Here in Cali you can have a house on the beach but public access is still required.

Knowing that you oppose government dictating anything, you need to know your rights and obligations if you are a large land holder in Montana. MONTANA CODE ANNOTATED TITLE 7 is a good start. You thought Oregon was bad.

You probably should have left out all the political parts of the thread and posted more then one picture.

Your opinion that the Interstate freeway system for example, it is fantastic but its also in the Constitution under Interstate Commerce.

Or your gushing over Harry S Truman, who had nothing to do with the National Park Act of 1916 or any of the earlier acts creating National Parks by Grant and possibly Lincoln.

FWIW I also agreed that your sewing machine thread was a good idea. Back in elementary school we kids sewed some wash mitts together that I wish I still had today. I also have my own home sewn bivy sack for mountain climbing and camping.

So its twice now that I have agreed with you.

Not on topic of this thread, but it relates to its downturn:
The only way we are going to stop all of this flaming going on is self control. Dont hold grudges with people. Dont comment badly on someone (if you ain't got something good to say, say nothing at all). Do the obvious to stop it. Pointing fingers at people helps none. Arguing helps none. I offered admiration for Theodore Roosevelt. You know...this guy...

One of President Theodore Roosevelt's most lasting and significant contributions to the world was the permanent preservation of the some of the most unique natural resources of the United States. According to the National Geographic, the area of the United States placed under public protection by Theodore Roosevelt, as National Parks, National Forests, game and bird preserves, and other federal reservations, comes to a total of approximately 230,000,000 acres or about 84,000 acres per day!

I could offer admiration for Truman but I did not. Not once...never did I mention Truman in that or any other thread I have ever posted on Pet Talk.

Now please, if my threads annoy you...stop reading them. My feelings will not be hurt.

I've also been to Volcano National Park in Hawaii. Talk about amazing. We were able to hike about a mile or so over lava beds and see an actual lava flow.

Then we went back at night and you could see the orange streams of hot rock on the hillside that weren't visible in the daytime.

There was a part of the road that had been covered with lava just a month before we were there. We could walk on the cooled lava up to the "no parking" signs. The lava had come down and swirled around the signs so that only the top half of them remained and they were tilted at about a 30 degree angle. You could put your hand on the top of the pole and feel the heat coming out of it.

If I could add a little fuel to this fire. One of our former Presidents, not to
mention any names, was trying to auction off, to the highest bidder, some of our National Park land under the control of BLM. I think some of those land sale were successful. This will be another star he can add to his legacy.

You should all - old, new and otherwise, quit with name calling, accusations, bickering, etc.,. This thread has veered far from the topic of National Parks. Please think of how an outsider would feel reading anything you post, and remember we want Pet Talk to be a friendly, welcoming place.

I just checked the "deleted thread" - one of those powers I have as a moderator.

My favourite power of a moderator is the banhammer. I wield it on two sites. They fear me O.O.

No worries. "Typos" happen. Plus, I have been called worse. MUCH worse. I served in the Army for a long time. :)

Carry on with "the dance". :)

National Park Service to offer free admission on 3 weekends

POSTED: 01:06 p.m. EDT, Jun 02, 2009

The National Park Service will offer three fee-free weekends this summer, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced this morning during a news conference at Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

''During these tough economic times, our national parks provide opportunities for affordable vacations for families,'' Salazar said. ''I encourage everyone to visit one of our nation's crown jewels this summer and especially to take advantage of the three free-admission weekends.''

There are 391 national parks located in 49 states.

The 147 National Park Service sites across the country that charge admission will waive those fees during the weekends of June 20-21, July 18-19, and August 15-16, Salazar said.

Many park partners, including tour operators, hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and other vendors will offer additional discounts and special promotions on those dates, he said.

For more information, go to http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm.

No! Good try though.

I think blue and ES secretely have a crush on each other:p

Im sure ES would agree that the famous exchange between Nancy Astor and Winston Churhill would be very fitting for us.

I just checked the "deleted thread" - one of those powers I have as a moderator. blue, Edwina's Secretary did not mention Harry Truman at all in that thread, and neither did anyone else.

Everyone should treat each other respectively, okay?

Who was it she did thank for the National Park Service?

ES I do appologise for my mistake.

And for you to quote in you sig if you wish it....

ES I was wrong.

Thank you Karen. For some reason I hate being called a liar.:rolleyes:

I will now take the pledge. I have...as Sparky suggested put blue on ignore. Elsewise I might wait for an apology for what he said in the original thread and an apology for calling me a liar in this one. And somehow I know it won't happen.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

So I guess by the logic Sparky and pomtzu are using...Puckstop has a crush on Liz! Wow....who would have thought it? ;-))

Never called you a liar, just like youve never called me a troll.

I will appologize again for being wrong however, in this thread.

What do I have to appologise for in your original thread?

Somebody quote the part in bold so ES sees it as I am now on her ignore list, TIA.

ETA: sorry for using the multi quote function.

In the original thread she credits all those - Theodore Roosevelt and others - who helped create the legislation that preserves our National Parks.

I am glad everyone is calming down, and apologies have been proffered. See, we can all get along.

Thank you, everyone.

We have been to several National Parks, including Zion Canyon, which we kind of went through by accident, but was stunningly beautiful. Our country has such varied landscapes, from Cape Cod National Seashore all the way to Hawaii's Volcanos National Park and everything in between - we are a fortunate nation.

So he is just trying to use me to get to Edwina?:eek::eek:

He is not her type either.

I agree, Erp would kill me in my sleep if I tried to put a hat on her, that is my type of cat.

None of my pets wear or will ever wear hats or costumes.

Edwina was a Character in the movie "Raisng Arizona" FTW.

Those are beautiful pictures of Banff Nat PK.

I was a leader for Adventure Cycle out of Missoula Montana. I had already lead several groups on the Colorado and Montana Great Divide Mountain bike routes prior to 2005. I had planned to do the Banff to Roosville Mt Route in 2005 but became ill with cancer so that dream never came about. This is the Great Divide MTN Bike route in Canada that I would have lead if not for my illness. It is 215 miles of pure heaven. http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/images/great_divide_Canada.gif

OOh Moraine is one of my favourite places in the world (and I am lucky to have seen a lot of places)! Thanks Catty! We used to take our kids camping in the Rockies every year when we lived in Alberta.

Blue that also looks like a little piece of heaven; thanks for sharing!
