I have been holding off telling you all because I am so worried about Killian that I didn't want any prayers and well wishes taken away from him, but my sweet little Cassie pigalett pugalett is not doing well at all. She has always had terrible allergies and has always been on special food and has always had to get treatment for allergies. Her allergies have been so bad this whole summer, that she has had non-stop ear infections. She has been on several different types of antibiotics to get rid of the infection but it continues to come back in both ears, and with a vengence. The worse thing happening right now is that these past few weeks, she has developed an inner ear infection, and that is what her major problem is now.

Her head has a permenant tilt to the left. She has been unable to walk up/down stairs, or jump on the couch anymore. She falls often and on her worst days, she has even refused food, which is NOT like her, as she is the piggiest dog I have ever met in my life.

Yesterday Cassie had an endoscopic otoscopy procedure under anasethc, which is the viewing of deep inside the ear canal, and the doctor found something he had never found in his 30 + year career...in Cassie's inner ear, he was unable to see very far because she had caloused masses blocking off the entry way to her inner ear. That explained why the topical ear drops were not doing anything. He tried to get a biopsy of it, but it was so hard and calloused, that he was not able to. Although he hates steroids, he said that that may be the only thing that will get the swelling down in her inner ear. So she is on a very aggressive steroid treatment now, as well as other hopefull cures for her inner ear infection.

In two weeks the doctor is going to check out Cassie's progress and hopefully she will be better, but we are preparing for the worst at this point, in case she remains the same. She is in pain and she can hardly walk at this point without falling over sideways. Her head tilts so much that her equalibrium is off and she is unable to hold herself up. She also has fallen down the two step landing and ever since then, she will not walk down or up stairs.

I am so worried about her. She is such a darling, sweet, delightful dog, and she has not acted like her happy little self in SO long. She has had a really hard summer because of infection after infection.

Please wish Cassie well and send her well wishes. She really needs it now. My poor little Princess Cassendra :(

Oh, Leslie, we haven't talked about Cassie, or asked about her in so long, and then this morning, when I saw this post, my memories of her precious pictures came flooding back. Bless her heart. :( We will definitely keep her in our prayers. I hope the steroids will provide her some relief.

At some point, maybe you could explain to our newer members about Cassie. Many of them may not remember her. She's such a precious girl, and we pray that she will recover.

Cassie is Leslie's precious Pug girl. She and Graham didn't get along together so well, so a couple of years ago, Cassie went to live with her Grandma. Am I telling this correctly, Leslie? I hope so! But Leslie sees her often and obviously still loves her alot. Hope this gives you a little insight on Cassie.

I do hope she'll be ok, Leslie. Keep us posted. Lots and lots of prayers for your girl.

Oh no, Leslie....:( Yes, we old timers remember so well the trials and tribulations of your precious little Cassie. How we all grew to love your little pugster. Poor little baby is really having a bad time of it, isn't she.:( You are doing everything possible to improve her quality of life and hopefully the steroids will get that swelling down so she can be more easily treated. Rest assured that prayers are on their way for this DEAREST little one.

My very best wishes to both your Cassendra and you. You are in my prayers.

My Max (dachshund) also has terrible skin allergies. He's allergic to 3 different kinds of dust mites and flea saliva. Now there's a combination.

Not sure this would help you, but after we moved a couple of years ago, our old vet retired and we found a new vet who seems very up to date on new treatments. Dr. Brennan suggested we try and attack the problem instead of chase it once it got bad in the summer. Dr. Brennan also noted the treatment of steroids had started to not help Max and had in fact started giving him stomach problems, he suggested we have his allergies tested through Heska (out of Colorado). They have created a therapy for him and I give him allergy shots on a varying schedule. I still give him antihistamines, but not steroids. Much easier on his stomach.

Do you think this could help your baby at all? I know it's hard on you to watch your babies be sick like this.

Poor Cassie, I feel so bad for you, little one. You are one adorable Puglet, you know. I really hope that the steroids help you. It is so hard to know which treatments are best for our guys. Give Cassie a great big slurp from Killi and Shi. Killi says if you want to come over, you can share the recliner-couch with him.

It keeps getting worse for little Cassie. I am so saddened everytime I see her. She can barely walk now, and she falls over so often. She is not doing any better, in fact, we recentelly realized that she has totally lost all of her hearing, and because of the head tilt, she also can't see straight. She often bumps into things. She walks like a drunken dog. It breaks my heart to see her like this :(

She is not well at all :( She came over to my house last night with my mom and Ritzie, and she was afraid to walk at all. She just sat on the ground and cried until my mom picked her up and set her on the couch next to her.

Cassie is suffering. We all love her so much but I fear the worst with my sweetest little pugalett girl.

With every day she is gradually getting worse. The vet thinks that the masses in her inner ear were serious and he said that they were not operable, because of where they were located. The vet that she is going to is absolutely wonderful beyond words. I love the clinic and I love each and every vet that works there. Cassie was going to a vet that was very inexpensive, but also pretty crummy. They kept perscribing antibiotic after antibiotic without finding out the root of her problems. My mom got fed up with their mediocre "cures" and she began taking Cassie to the same wonderful vets that I take Graham, Kersey & Minion to. They are really too expensive, but the vets are incredibly wonderful and they are so thorough with their care.

We are just babying Cassie and helping her out alot. She is unable to do what she used to do with ease. Walking has become an effort. We are not giving up yet. We are going to keep trying and keep hoping our little dollie girlie will be OK. At this point I am real worried. We have to look at her quality of life if she continues to go downhill. It's not fair to her to make her go through this. She has been so uncomfortable all summer with her constant ear infections, her many hot spots, her two ear hematomas, her itching and scratching and her feavers, her hearing loss, and her reduction in vision, and finally, these masses in her inner ear which are causing that aweful inner ear infection that just won't quit. She is such a gentle, kind little soul.

I feel so bad. My heart breaks when I see her. I can hardly stand it.

Leslie I am just seeing this now and want to tell you how upset and concerned I am. I just adore Cassie and she was the first puggily I met when I came to PT. I remember your early posts about your 'then' two babies, Cassie and Graham. She has been through so much, bless her sweet little puggily heart. I remember her accident at the dog park and we all anxiously waited for her to recover from that and now this. Little Cassie will definitely be in my prayers. I know that you and the vets are doing all that you can, and so now we just wait for things to hopefully start to "work." Leslie, how old is Cassie? I don't remember if I ever knew that. {{{{{HUGS to precious Cassie!}}}}}

Thank you so much everyone for the well wishes. It means alot to me.

Cassie is 9 1/2 years old. I guess that is old for a pug. Pugs are not extremely healthy like most of the other toys are, therefore, they don't live as long. When I talked to a wonderful lady who breeds pugs, who used to be in one of Graham's agility classes, she told me that she has never had a pug live more then 9 years. She said that 6-8 years is typical.

Cassie is not from good bloodlines. As a matter of fact, she's a puppy mill dog. The family who bought her and had her for 7 years before realizing that dogs are not happy locked in laundry rooms for 12-14 hours per day, bought her from a flea market. A real dirty flea market that didn't know anything about the breed. They also did not have the parents and they did not seem to like dogs at all.

A brief explanation for those who don't know who Cassie is: About 2 1/2 years ago while I was on my lunch hour at work, I was standing in line at the resturaunt that is on the main floor of my building. Standing in line behind me was one of my co-workers and she was chatting with someone about this pug who needed a home, or else she was going to have to take her to the dog pound. I immediately perked up, as I LOVE pugs and I wanted a small companion for Graham and my mom.

Let me rewind a bit. At that time, Graham was living with my mom because Dan and I were unable to find any dog friendly apartments at the time. So Graham was living with "Grandma" and he was lonely for canine company (at least I thought so). I wanted him to have someone to talk to while both my mom and I were at work. I wanted a smaller dog because my mom could not handle a big dog as well as she used to be able to do. My mom and I always loved pugs and so I could not pass up the opportunity to rescue this little pug from her previous home. I asked my mom that same night if she would be interested in adopting an older pug. She thought it sounded wonderful.

So the lady who owned her for 7 years, brought her over to my moms house one day, and Cassie fit in perfectlly.

When we found an apartment that allowed dogs, we knew that we were taking Graham, but I could not have taken both dogs and left my mom with no canine friends. My mom is my best friend and, although Graham and Cassie got along fine, they never played or bonded too much, and I would not have taken both of the dogs out of my moms house. When I got Cassie, my mom immediately wanted to keep her when I took Graham. So Graham came with me and Cassie stayed with my mom. I visit her ALL the time, so I see Cassie several times during the week, and every time my mom came over to my apartment and now my house, she brings her two dogs: Ritzie the shih tzu, and Cassie the pigalett pugalett.

Phew that was a mouthful :)

Oh Leslie, I am so sorry. It really seems you've had to go through so much more than you or your babies deserve :( I am crying uncontrollably after reading about how precious Cassie is suffering. I remember when she was injured at the dog park, I was soooooooooo worried and I still keep that in my mind when I have Reece at the park. I am SO cautious. I bet Cassie's tragedy has saved many dogs from getting hurt. She's such a brave girl and a fighter, as are you. I know you guys can conquer this. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so scared this is going to happen to Reece in the future. I have been battling yeast infections in his ears and nose since I got him. I've seen 4 vets about it and am just prescribed all sorts of stuff that doesn't help much. He'll itch and rub his ears and screech and moan while he does it because it hurts so much. I'm so frusterated.

Wow, I have not heard from you in awhile. Thanks for the nice words.

Cassie is not improving at all, but at this point, she has stopped getting worse. She has her vet appointment this week. I'll let you all know how she did. It still hurts to see her :(

The steroids are making her starving to death, so she has actually put on weight. She is getting pretty round now, which is a good sign. At least she's eating. :(
We have decided to end Cassie's life if she is not better within the week. She is suffering and she is in a terrible state now. The vets are trying so hard, and she was taking this expermental medicine that made her so bad that she can hardly breath and is walking even worse then she was before. Our sweetest, most adorable, kindest little pugalett girl is having a sleepover at the hospital tonight. She has been coughing and gagging an aweful lot the past two days, and the vets are assuming that she asperated some of her vomit and now she has pnemonia and she is very much worse. When I saw Cassie today before she went to the vet I wanted to have her misery ended, but we so badly want her to pull out of this that we are going to give her every chance that we have. We are giving her one last chace. The vet told us that she does have a chance for pulling through this. She will have a permenant head tilt and her nerves on one side of her face have been damaged, due to the inner ear infection, so half of her face droops, while the other half is normal. That is all just comsmetic and we will love her regardless of the physical damage that the inner ear infection and ruptered eardrums have caused. As long as she is once again happy, that's all that we care about.

Cassie is spending the night at the vet so she can have IV fluids and antibiotics for her new pnemonia. They are also going to take some x-rays and do more blood work to check her white cell count. If the time for Cassie to go to the R.B. is soon, at least we can know that we tried everything to make her better, and gave it our full effort.

:( I wish the news was better :( We love Cassie so much. We just wish we could have had more then a couple of years with her. It seems like just last week her joyous little self entered our lives, our home, and our hearts. I guess this is the only bad part about adopting an elderly dog. It is so wonderful to provide them the home that they deserved, but did not have before. But their time is so short. I am still glad that we have had the chance to give Cassie the life that she deserved but never had but we are dreading the next step. This is the hardest part...deciding when to finally give up the fight for life and let her pass away. I feel scared and so sad at the decision to give her until the end of the week. If by next Friday her quality of life has not returned, then we will say goodbye to our darling little friend.

:( Our hearts are aching now.

Leslie,

I am so very sorry for Cassie, You & your Mom. At least
you all know that Cassie is being given EVERY chance to
regain her health and restore some quality of life to her
time on this earth. We all know what a hard decision you
all might have to make, if things don't improve for her.
Cassie's eye's will tell you when she needs to rest over
Rainbow Bridge. Sending love, hugs & prayers for Cassie,
You & your Mom. Liz.

In my time here at Pet Talk I have met and followed the stories of so many wonderful pets. Cassie was one of the original pupsters that won my heart. Though I have never met this little puggily in person I was smitten by her pictures and Leslie's posts. I am so sorry to hear that she is not responding to all that is being done. This is the downside of Pet Talk. As we get to meet all of these precious pets we do indeed feel the sadness, right along with their humans, when they are hurting. Leslie there is nothing I can say right now to help little Cassie and I know you have given Cassie all of the love and happiness you could for as long as she has been a part of her life. I am still praying for that little cutie but I just wanted to let you know that whatever happens I completely understand. (((HUGS to you and your mom)))

I feel so heartbroken right now. I imagine how awful you and your mother must be feeling. I will keep sweet Cassie in my prayers. If she does go to Rainbow Bridge next week, she will go knowing she is immensely loved and will be missed terribly. I hope all the prayers of Pet Talk will bring the girl some relief and comfort.

Leslie the following two lines from your last post say it all.

The vet told us that she does have a chance for pulling through this.
If by next Friday her quality of life has not returned, then we will say goodbye to our darling little friend.

Thank you so much everyone for the kind words. Sadly, Cassie is not showing any signs of improvement. The vet put her on a long course of antibiotics, but she is supposed to stay on them for a total of 21 days. I can't see her suffer for that long. It's not fair to her. She throws up so often that it's getting near impossible to give her the antibiotic. She'll keep it down for maybe 5 minutes and then it's in a pile of vomit.

We may be extending the time that we had originally planned on. I really don't think I can see her suffer for 21 days, but if the vet is sure it may help her, then we'll give it a try for as long as we feel necessary. If after two weeks she is still in the same condition that she's in now, we'll ask the vet what he thinks we should do at this point. Like I said before, the vets at the animal hospital are amazingly loving and kind. They would not intentionally keep an animal alive if it were not in the animal's best interest. They felt that she did have a chance of getting well enough to have her quality of life back, but they also told us that if she did not get well that they think she should be put to rest.

My mom and I are loving on her a LOT and reminding her how much we love her. She is enjoying all the special attention. She's still as sweet and gentle as always. She said thanks for all the nice words. It's so nice to have such love come towards her from all around the globe.

I just found out new news this evening. Cassie may be helping us make that most difficult decision :( My mom has been trying all night to give Cassie her antibiotic and she immediately vomits it up. :( It makes the decision easier but it is frustrating and sad. My mom was giving Cassie her antibiotic in about a teaspoon of canned food, but Cassie kept throwing up the teaspoon of food with antibiotic and mom kept picking the pill out and trying again with another teasapoon of food, only to have Cassie vomit it up. She then put the pill in a piece of cheese and Cassie ate it up, and then promptly vomited it up...pill and all. She then tried to pill her without any food, and Cassie vomited the pill :(

my poor little girl. :(

Oh, Leslie, I am so sorry to read this latest news. Does the vet have any ideas about why she is throwing up so much? :( I wish he could give something to settle her stomach, so the medication would have a chance to work, or that you could give it to her as an injection rather than pill form. I do hate to hear that the little girl seems to be suffering so much. Her world is spinning from her inner ear infection and the damage that the nerves are doing to her brain. The vet told me that it's kind of like being carsick everytime you open your eyes. She is dizzy from everything spinning, so she vomits her food and water. There is actually nothing wrong with her stomach, it's all from her inner ear infection. My mom called the vet today to tell him that she is no longer eating, and so she can no longer administer the pills. I am under the asumption that the injectable antibiotic is for a different type of infection, and the one she is on is supposed to be good for both ear and bronchial infections, which is why she was prescribed oral antibiotics. I am not sure, but I have alot of trust in the vets. They are wonderful. I'll keep you all posted if you like. She finds comfort in sleeping, so she has been doing alot of that.

Love to you all,

Leslie

Poor Cassie! I know how she feels. I have an allergy to milk and it gives me inner ear infections. I have felt just like that: dizzy whenever you open your eyes and heaving tummy. Even when your eyes are closed, the world seems to spin. I pray the med kicks in for her and helps her feel better. :(

Well I must say that Cassie's vet is a dear, dear man. He took Cassie all day yesterday and he is so interested in her case that he split the cost with my mom. She has been paying so much money to try to fix Cassie and he paid 80% of the bill out of the goodness of his heart. He told her that he spent 20 minutes massaging her and he told my mom what a special dog Cassie is. He told her that he can see what a delight she is and he asked my mom to have some more hope for the little darling. He told her that he feels really confindent that he can get her comfortable and happy once again. Now we are placing her in the bathroom with a vaporizer twice a day. After the vaporizer treatment, she gets massage. She is on a different antibiotic and she seems to be doing OK. She's coughing less, and throwing up less, but she has not regained her appetite back yet. She is down to 14 pounds from 16 in a few days. Her ribs are just starting to show. We're now waiting on the new antibiotics and the vaporizer/massage treatments.

Thank you SO much for caring, everyone! It means so much to me, my mom, and the darling little pigalett pugalett Cassie. I'll keep you updated on any new news...hopefully next time it will be better.

Honey, you want to know about dog allergies?? My Lab is allergic to air, I swear she is. I battle chronic ear infections, she used to get chronic staph infections on her skin too.... I had to give her shot of something called Staph-lysate to help her body build up an immunity to the staph.. as for your dog with the ear problems, has your vet mention vestibular syndrome to you??. It's when the vestibular nerve deep in the inner ear gets innflamed and it throws off a dogs balance. It can be caused by bad ear infections. My old 17 year old dog had spells with it..It does go away, but in most cases comes back from time to time...It causes something call "Nystagmus" too(twitching eyes). Sounds like whatever the growth is in your dogs ear is aggrevating the vestibular nerve. Pred will help with the inflamation and a strong ORAL antibiotic plus Ottomax drops. You have to disipline yourself and do weekly ear cleanings and if need be, use the ottomax every other day..

Swoozie
10-30-2002, 07:39 AM
Here's a site for you which tells about vestibular syndrome.. it's one I have on my site, but unfortunately my site is down right now....
http://www.golden-retriever.com/vestibular.html

it causes dogs to vomit because of the dizzy sea sick feeling they have.. Dramamine will help with the vomiting.. I know just how you feel. The first time my dog got it, I found her laying on the floor, unable to walk, with vomit all over the place and her eyes twitching back and forth..I rushed her to the vets and when they told me, with time and patience she'll come out of it, I thought they were crazy.. My dog weighed 70 pounds and I had to use a canvas log carrier with handles on it to get her in and out to go potty... it took her 2 1/2 till she was able to stand and walk on her own, and more time for her to become totally oriented again... hang in there... my thoughts are with ya :-)

I have tears of joy now for sweet Cassie. I have such hope that she will make a recovery and be a happy little Puggy again soon.

I saw some postcards with Pugs on them at Petsmart today. I wanted to buy the whole set and send them all to you Leslie, but I thought 150 postcards might be a bit much :o

Hehehe :) You are such a sweety :) LOL, thanks for the giggle.

She's doing maybe a teeny bit better, but she has stopped eating her food completely. I hope today is better. Yesterday my mom brought Cassie and Ritz over to carve pumpkins with me. Cassie had refused her food all day but I tried giving her some of Graham and Kersey's Innova kibble and she ate about 1/4 cup! That was pretty good. I sent my mom home with a few cups of Innova for the little pigalett pugalett, so hopefully she will eat it.

Cassie used to be the piggiest dog I have ever seen. She would inhale her food so quick that her rear feet would actually come right off the ground as her face was in the food bowl scarfing at record speed. She was pigging food so bad once that she actually fell over sideways from gorging so fast and furiously. I am not sure how she pulled that one off, but you can imagine everyone's surprise when she fell over sideways from going at her food so quick! Her not eating is very unlike her. Hopefully she'll like the Innova better then her California Natural. We have to be so careful what we feed her because of her severe allergies, but if it gets to the point that we are just trying to get weight on her, then we'll see if the vet can give us any foods to try.

I'll give Cassie a hug and kiss from all her friends here :)

Leslie the news continues to be good. I'm so happy she ate 1/4 cup of food. I know that's not nearly enough for our darling little puglet but it's a start. Hopefully it will stay down and she will develop her old appetite again. I loved this line from your post and must admit it felt so good to smile once again.

She sounds like quite a little comical cutie! LOL! Keep eating and get strong Cassie - we love you!

I know how happy you are that Cassie at a little food!!!!!!!! Is there some kind of fish (like salmon or white fish) and potatoes that Cassie is not allergic to? Killian ate Fish/Potato prescription dog food by Eukanuba when we first got him (with salmon added). It helped him.
I'm glad Cassie is at least a little better. Prayers are continuing!!!

You are all so wonderful. I do really appreciate all the special words, prayers, and well wishes that are headed Cassie's way. She is doing OK. Not great, but not as bad as she was. She is still on antibiotic and she still caughs an aweful lot, but she is eating, which is good. She has to eat wattered down, pureed canned food (which, by the way, looks REALLY gross!) and she seems to be doing OK with that. She vomits often, but at least she is keeping some of her mush down. She has lost a bit more weight, but she's eating less then ever, especially since that canned food has to be wattered down and purreed.

The vet told my mom and I that we have to decide when we think that Cassie does not enjoy life any longer. We do think that she is still pretty happy and we don't feel that she is ready yet, but the vet did tell us that there will be a time when Cassie will have no quality of life left, and that is what we have to watch out for. I am just glad that we still have her, and that she still shows some happiness. She could go downhill overnight, or she could hang in there for months. It's a blessing that she is still in our lives, and she still gets excited when someone comes home :)

For now, Princess Cassendra pigalett pugalett is not ready to pass. I am confindent that she will let us know when it's time. Thank you SOOOO much, everyone. I'll give her a big kiss and a smashie face for all of you :)

This might be your clue; when she stops getting excited. For my cat Jerry, it was when he stopped greeting us with a good morning meow.

Good luck!

It is oh so very good to hear that Cassie is eating and doing ok. And so heartening that she gets excited when she sees you, I can just imagine how lovely that is. Prayers, postive thoughts and anything else it takes that she keeps on feeling good and is with you for a long long time yet. Hugs for the little sweetie from me and slurpy kisses and tailwags from Bob.

I agree with your thoughts on this and it sounds like she is still enjoying life. Please do give that precious pugster a big fat kiss for me on her little smashy face! That and not being able to eat anything are our two biggest clues to watch out for. Although she does not enjoy eating as much as she used to, she still enjoyes it. And she gets all cute and excited and delighted and wags her curly little tail when anyone comes to visit her, and that is a big thing that we are going to watch out for. Cassie says, "hi and smashey" to everyone. Love to you all.

Hi friends,

Cassie is still with us, thankfully, but not doing real well. She coughs with every exhale but she still appears happy and jolly. She still has a quality of life, even though she can't take a normal breath without coughing, and she has to be confined to the linoleum kitchen after she eats or drinks because she continually vomits up her food and water (and then promptly eats it up again). I have a pretty strong stomach with many things, but that is one thing that I can't stomach. When I go to my moms house, I have to ask her not to feed Cassie for about 15 minutes before I get there, and during the duration that I am there visiting. She does have a new habbit that is kind of funny, though. With almost every cough, she lets out a little *toot*..."cough TOOT...cough TOOT...cough TOOT". She never fails to make us laugh, even when she doesn't intend to do anything funny.

She is going to a different vet for a second opinion, my mom is calling the new vet today. Her wonderful vet is off for a few months due to a shoulder surgery, so my mom thought that would be a good opportunity to get another opinion. I'll let you know how she does at the new vet.

Thank you so much for thinking about her. I'll give the smashey face a hug and kissie for you all.
