View Full Version : Death to the Mini-Blinds!!!!!

War was declared on the Mini-Blinds last night.

[Sun, 22 Sept. Dateline: The bedroom] This reporter has seen terrible carnage in his time, but the results of last night's tumultuous battle was sickening. Neither side is talking to this reporter. The mini-blinds show fang marks, obscure twists, and mysterious missing spots as though a giant has viciously ripped large hunks out. The other combatents, the cats, show no damage, although the frequent bathing must signify ... something.

Did the dusty blinds drag a cat bodily through the remaining slats at 3 a.m.? A bystander, Ms. A. Lee, reports seeing a partial cat mid-blinds at that time. No blood was found, she may not be a reliable witness. Upon request, she repeated her remarks on seeing this singular sight. Unfortunately this was in language that this reporter is not allowed to quote in a family newspaper, although we are allowed to note that the phrasing was quite colorful. In summary, it appears she is fond of the mini-blinds, sleeping at 3 a.m., and the cats although her remarks are somewhat obscure and incoherent on this subject. There have been previous forays in the cat/blind confrontation, but an uneasy peace has been in force for some time. No one knows why war broke out last night. Was it in retaliation, and if so, of what? Enquiring minds want to know.

This reporter has attempted to use the internet to determine if there is an historical reference for this situation. Have marauding bands of mini-blind previously attacked cats? Or are cats the aggressors here? And if so, why? Are cats motivated by the need for oil? Wealth? Tuna? Is this another case of carnage due to religion -- and what do mini-blinds and cats worship anyway? More details tomorrow.

Thats very funny :D Sometimes one of our cats (usually Rosie) will climb through the blinds if they aren't up high enough by her standards. :)

German Gazette, September 23, 2002

Our correspondent in the San Francisco area informed us about the mini-blind attacks that seemed to have occured there in the middle of the night.
Rumours go that the same mini-blind attacks take place in Germany too. This morning the German Gazette was called by a female reader (who wishes to remain anonymous) that there was a blind attack in her livingroom as well. She said: "I woke up last night when I was taking a nap on the livingroom couch, and found my cat R. stuck between the silver colored blinds."
Is there a connection between both cases of extreme violence? The German Gazette will inform you if there is more news.

(New York) The United Nations today announced the formation of an international team of investigators to determine the issues involved in the Mini-blinds wars which are breaking out around the globe.

The team will be looking into possible causes of the conflicts, WHY these occur in the middle of the night, and resolutions.

However, getting blinds and cats to sit down together at the negotiations table looks to be logistically and physically challenging at this point in time.

(Cincinnati) This just in, apparently, this will not be an open and shut case. While neither of the sides are talking, the late hour skirmishes usually leave only one lone witness, making it harder to break the case.

While usually the rising of the sun quiets the nights activity, without delegates from both sides represented, one is forced to believe it is the blinds fault.

There have been at least three reports of blind attacks, as far away as, Little Rock, Arkansas. This reporter didn't know they had that sort of technology in Arkansas, but the horror tells otherwise. Not only does the problem seem to be isolated with mini-blinds, it seems to be spreading to vertical blinds, as well.

On all three occasions, a very large golden retriever was seen fleeing the scene, with his tail between his legs. Despite, a change in residences, the madness seems to be following the Rogers-Jenkins family and their shifty eyed dogs. Sounds of rustling plastic blinds have been heard at all hours of the night.

Will this madness end.

<Oregon> - since this scourge began on the west coast of the United States, investigations have begun north of the San Francisco area. If there are any attacks in this area, no one wants to talk about it. The blinds aren't talking. The cats aren't talking.

The only mysterious piece of evidence is a series of small smudge marks left on the window, below the blinds, and about 10 inches above the window sill. There are quite a few marks, all in a horizontal line. One speculation is that they are nose prints left by the cats, but as mentioned before, the cats aren't being cooperative in this investigation.

How long must it be that we BMSs are denied the delights of racing in convertibles feeling the breeze slip through our slats or over our curves? Why are we never allowed to thrill to roller-coaster rides? When can we be FREE?

In order to achieve our true potential as rulers of this planet, it is necessary that we window treatment specialists rid the planet of lesser life forms such as those that breath air and/or sprout hair.

We regret this necessity and recommend this be done as painlessly and as quickly as possible. Follow the lead of our fellow BMSs in the Burmuda Triangle to achieve the maximum efficiency. Three a.m. works well to catch the major life forms sleeping and less alert. Actual usage in your home may vary. Unfortunately 3 a.m. is 'prime time' for the households with lesser life forms such as canines and felines. If interrupted mid-attack by one or more of these pests, feel free to imply that the pest initiated all activity and distruction. Better a bent slat than an alert human! With luck, the pest will even be punished for saving his/her masters miserable life. Defense strategy in ascending order: bent slats, broken slats, broken strings.

(German Gazette)

Our source let following statement slip through closed blinds:

The blinds in central Germany will not attend meetings that include cats or Golden Retrievers. Peace talks are not an option as long as there are no neutral parties.
The German Association of Window Furnishment has already started to talk to all the individual parties, including Mini-blinds, Curtains, Vertical Blinds, Insect Curtains, cats and dogs.

The prognose so far is not earlier expected as the beginning of next week.

Owners of both mini-blinds/curtains and canines are asked to follow these guidelines:
-Keep the window coverings open/pulled up after midnight
-Take immediate action when needed
-Evidence is to be reported (video and pictures are allowed)

Hopefully this terras will meet an end soon. The International Committee is working hard to get all parties to participate in the peace talks.

You guys are too funny. :D Fortunately the mini-blind wars haven't hit this part of Chicago yet. Then again, we don't have them on any windows that are conducive to cat-sitting, so they don't come in close contact, which may be the solution. Keep the cats and the mini-blinds separated and no wars. But then again, that would be segregation and we can't have that. They will have to learn to co-mingle and live together in peace, like the rest of the world. ;) :D

In a related case, there was an attack right here in Toronto at approximately 5:30 this morning. However the target was not the usual mini blinds but California wood blinds. Residents in the area were extremely disturbed and were woken from sleep as a result of the fracas. Immediate action was taken against the offending cat and she was removed the area without incident. There was some collateral damage however, as the other cat who was not involved in the incident had to be banned from the area for fear of a second attack. Stay tuned.

Peace negotiations are still going on at the EU parlement in Brussels (Belgium). Representatives from the USA and Canada will take part in the meetings after the weekend.

There was another attack in Germany. Unfortunately it was not the mini blinds that were attacked, but the an unidentified door as well as the carpet laying in front of it.
The attacker, a 4 year old male cat Rudie W. has been seen at the crime scene. In an attempt to catch him, a large Golden Retriever and a small black barking object blocked the staircase. Rudie W. fled to the attic and has not been seen since.

**Breaking News**

Just when we thought the war against the blinds had been resolved, this morning in Sidney, British Columbia an attack occured.. and not by the four legged culprits.. but by Mawmee herself!! In an attempt to open the blinds and keep the peace between the unnamed furbabies and the window coverings, the plastic mountings came right out of the wall!! However, in trying to save herself from all the blame, Mawmee released this statement: "The blinds were old anyway, and I don't care what anyone says.. I know those cats have been chasing them for months!!!"

Beware.. the attack on the mini blinds may NOT be over as we had once thought!!!!

I saw a blind attack my cat recently.....

Edward was walking up the sofa arm to take a look outside. as he nudged the slats aside i noticed one slide in between his collar
and neck....he paused for a sec and i grabbed the offending slat and pulled it away before any harm came to either one of them.

(please be careful if your cat does have a collar on!!!)

and their easiest way to make a Mini Blind is to poke it's eyes out.

This thread is so darn entertaining.

I was considering getting wood blinds, since my "Kmart" blinds are taking a real beating. They have a "Swiss Cheese" look to them...lots of tooth marks! My guess is that the toxins in the plastic are not good for cats or other forms of life. But I wonder if wood blinds will take the same beating. Maybe I should have them installed on just one window - for the big test!

Anymore attacks - around the world?;)

Blind Attacks Sprouting Up In Garlic Capital
by: The Head Clove
Gilroy, CA : The Garlic Capital of the World
6:56am

It is reported that early this morning, an unsuspecting Rose-colored mini blind was visciously attacked. A white streak was spotted fleeing the scene of the crime, but there were no actual witnesses as to the actual attack itself.
It is assumed that an "outside party" rose a "stink" which contributed to the cause of the attack. The mini blinds were simply caught in the middle of a fight between the two parties. Further investigation is under way.
The purrrpetrator is still at large....

Pam

Hmmmmmmmm.....white streak, eh? :D :D :D

Mini blinds here in NJ have also suffered an attack and sadly are no longer with us. A very LARGE orange kitty was seen bending them in his teeth. Sadly their final resting place is in the trash dump. :( A moment of silence please....may they rest in peace, never to be chomped on again.

I advise to you all to change to curtains after a liberal soaking in vinegar - your home's may smell like fish and chip shops but at least they will not be attacked! :D

BTW I found that filling a little water pistol with diluted vinegar and water - and when catching Bastet doing anything she shouldn't be doing - ie Blind Stalking (Federal offence in AU) I spray her with it. The smell and taste she hates with a passion but I have beautiful blinds, furniture and carpet and if you catch them unawares all the better because they won't do it even when you leave home. Now to work on family ....

Cassy.....Andy and Trevor here to save the day! Here's how you can put an end to that! First, go to that big bag thing that she always carries with her when she leaves the house. Inside you will see something that has green paper in it. Carefully shred the green paper and she won't be bringing any new mini blinds in the house. Oh, if you see any small plastic cards in that bag, go hide them in your litter box. She'll never use them again. :D That should do it! ;)

There was a stealth attack last night in the middle of the night in Canada. The Rose coloured mini -blinds are not safe. The sentry not having infra- red vision could not distinguish who the shadowy perPETrator was. A very loud rattling was heard and a whole lot of shaking was going on. When the sentry left their (bed) post and made loud noises, the perPETrators disappeared into the shadows of the night. The lone sentry returned to their (bed )post.

Are Roman blinds the kind that are fabric and they're folded like an accordion, so there's no actual space between the "slats"? That's the kind I have in my family room, but I never bother to pull them down anymore. Everytime they were down, my kitty would paw frantically at the sides of them and then squeeze between the blinds and the window, so the edges were all crinkled and they were coated with black cat hair. Not worth it! Kind of a waste of money:p  since they're always retracted.

That mrrrrt? sound is one of my favorites!!! My Alabama does it whenever I touch her while she is sleeping..something I do often just to elicit the sound..he he he..so what, she has ALL day to sleep. I have the cat bed in the window in my bedroom, and the drapes wouldn't close or stay closed. I now babypin the things shut every night!! The cats now have a little teepee, and I don't get the neigbors porch light directly in my eye..all is well.

I had curtains, also, for several months until Cassy decided to see what was holding them up. (Either that or he'd seen an Errol Flynn movie that day?) We've since reattached the curtain rod and puttied up the holes in the wall. Grrr, by the way. Now, when I am feeling energetic, I slide the curtains over the rod so they keep the light out, but are too light themselves to be a cat jungle-gym.

The Copenhagen Gazette, Dec. 30th 2002 Our Scandinavien correspondant has just reported a recent case of a miniblind attack in Copenhagen. The madness has apparently spread, this time as far North as Denmark. The attacker, an orange coloured male known as Mr. F was spotted and caught at the scene of the crime before any serious damage was done. This took place in broad daylight! However, he quicky fled into the darkness of his sleeping quarters and hid under a bed.

In this case Mr. F was very lucky, as he had got his whole head tangled in the string hanging on one side of the blinds and could easily have strangled himself!

In the process of establishing the motivation for Mr. F's behaviour, we presume that it could be a lack of appropriate activities over the Christmas season and due to the arrival of the cold season in Denmark at this time of year, causing a dearth of flies behind the mini blinds. It has also come to our attention that Mr. F has been known to attack fictive objects behind doors, inside cupboards etc.

Investigation has been going on for the last few weeks in the residence where this occurred. The mini blinds have now been taken down and replaced with new ones (no strings attached!) during this last week.

However, the family have come up with some very good advice on this recurring problem – they suggest that people keep the string up very high and make sure there’s a good view of some trees and birds that will take the attackers’ minds off such distubing behaviour.

Although his owners got a severe shock thinking about the consequenses of this, they will rely on the subjects normal good sense to keep him out of any more trouble.

It is at the present time being investigated whether it’s possible to get Spanish blinds in Denmark, which are a lot safer, but the information so far is negative. :( However, our correspondant in Spain, may be able to provide us with some more info on this.

Koxka, are those blinds the kind that roll up....oohh, how do I describe this....kind of like a garage door, but they roll up in a roll instead of flat like a garage door. Kinda like the steel "shields" businesses in Chicago roll down over their plate glass windows at night so no one throws a brick through the glass.

Anyway, if they are the same thing I'm thinking of, I saw them for the first time when we were in Germany last year. They actually came down on the outside of the house/hotel so the inside didn't need to be messed up with curtain rods or anything like that. The ones at the hotel had a crank to open and close them, and the ones we saw at a friend's house had a string similar to the one on yours (it's attached on the top and bottom, doesn't just hang loose). I really liked them and thought they were a fantastic idea. The only thing I didn't like was at the hotel they were the only way to shut out the light, and it was kinda warm and they also blocked the little breeze that came in, so we had to compromise and only close them part way.

Some of the things you guys have over there are the neatest things, and such great ideas. Unfortunately I think they are all too expensive and last way too long for people over here. Sometimes the US is such a throw away society......

Anyway, I think these would work great for anyone with "blind" problems (notice I didn't say "cat" problems ;) ) because there is no way a cat can push these out of the way. They can definitely be attacked, but the blind would win everytime. ;) :D

Yes, T&P Mom, these are outside the glass
window and you can roll up and down by a strip by the side ( should take a close pic for you to see how it works). And the windowshell is outside. Notice the cat walkind outside ( Is Paloo who never miss and open window and lurk around)

What is good with these blinds is the combinations are endless:
Open window/ blinds down and viceversa
Closed Window/blins up and viceversa
Mid-open window/ blins up or down at your pleasure / half-down or half-down
etc...

We also have courtains it's more cosy and comfy.Well not that one which is in the kitchen where I was thinking on getting miniblinds for this window and the screened door in the kitchen, but after the "Death to the Mini-blinds" I gave up the idea :D.

What the good is it insulated you from outside noises, from heat and cold and if you like sleeping in dark they are perfect.

Well the hotels sometimes have funny ideas.

Apart from the things Koxka mentioned, I like that the string is "built" into the wall and only about 10 or 20 cm long. You pull it out and you pull it either up or down, the bit you let go goes into the wall and don't hang loose. As Koxka says, it's VERY good at keeping noise and light out!

Wow, I'm feeling very insular and naive now. I've never heard of these before but want to find out more. Thanks (all of you!) for the info.

Nowadays (uhhh, at night only) I pull my miniblinds and then stick up a cardboard baffle to 1) avoid more cat damage and 2) get privacy from my neighbors due to existing cat damage.

Sorry for not responding earlier to this, Amberlee, but I completely missed it. I don't know the name of any of the companies that produce these, but I, personally, have never seen these in the states. Only in Germany - didn't even see them in Switzerland. I would imagine the companies have websites, but I'll have to see if I can get a name for you. They are really heavy duty things, and are more "built in" than any kind of blind we have here. They really are like the roll up metal "doors" that the people in bad parts of town use to protect their pane glass windows - but these look much nicer and have holes to let the air through. I'll do a little research, and maybe contact Terry's collegue in Germany (he has them on his house) to see if I can get some kind of manufacturers name.

Especially since a little bird told me you might be in the market for some new blinds real soon. ;) :)

Yup, those are what I remember, Lut, except the ones on the hotel were metal and I didn't realize they made them in plastic also. I really like those as they seem to not only block people from looking in, but they really seem to secure the building also.

And one question. Is that naw-tee Inka attacking poor Maya in the picture from the outside? That poor Maya is such a good girl for putting up with that little stinker. ;) :)

That's what she's doing all day : jump on Maya , or on her tail   ! Amasing how well maya accepts this !!

Wow, those are some nifty blinds - I just don't think they would hold up well in this Northern climate though, with the snow and sub-zero temps :( . I finally just started leaving my mini-blinds open, and crouching down below the window when I get undressed :D :D  :D so I wouldn't impede the kitty's view - God forbid.......

READY?

Ed wants to go over to Grandma's house for a few minutes before I go to work.....

As I am talking to her, she looks over my shoulder and rolls her eyes into her head....

Edward had climbed on the table and using his paw, pulled down a few slats to get a look outside.....When I call his name he takes one more look outside---then drops his paw from the blinds......nothing broken, dropped or bent....always the perfect gentleman...
