This past Sunday my son came over to my house and told me he was concerned about his dog Desi a Chihuahua. He said that for about a week he had been getting more and more listless and was now just sitting in one place with a blank stare. I ask him if the dog had eaten anything unusual or maybe gotten into something. He proceeded to tell me that the week earlier he had put out some rat poison because they left a hole behind the stove where they had done some renovation. He found that some field mice found their way into the house. He put the poison behind his rear projection TV and thought it was to small for Desi to get to. He noted the next day the poison was gone and assumed the mice got into it. He recalls thinking that if the dog had eaten it the dog would already be dead. This had been the week before.

I got online and Googled the poison he had used and found that it was
an anticoagulant that causes what ever eats it to die a slow death from
bleeding to death. The anticoagulant depletes your bodies Vitaman K
that normally prevents bleeding. We immediately left the house looking
for some Vitamin K. None on the Drug stores carried it and just on a
lark I decided to drive by my Vet hoping someone would be there. Normally no one is in his office on Sunday. Luckily he was at his office and when we told him the situation he gave us a Vitamin K injection and some pills for the next day. He suggested we come in the next day to also get a transfusion.

The next day we went back with Koko in tow to be a blood donor. To
make a long story short after 2 transfusion and 3 days of intensive care
with fluids , Desi is home and getting better by the day. The Vet said Desi would not have survived another day if treatment had not started
when it did.

My son just brought Koko a Valentine card and Rawhide Bone from Desi.

The Valentine Shows Pluto in a pile of bones, It says THANKS....
you open the card... .......heaps.

The note reads

Dear Koko
Thank you for saving my life!
Your Blood Brother
Desi

Blood brother sounds good but I think Koko would be Desi's aunt since
my son is Desi's daddy. :D:D:D

Oooh yea... rat poison is a bad thing in houses with dogs. Glad to hear Desi was able to be saved. How sweet of it to be from Koko too... Lucky dog! =)

Two rat poison related stories on my end here.. When we first moved in here, we were out in the garage and notice Zeke eating something... Turns out it was rat poison.. and we were about to get to him quick enough that we didnt even have to take him to the vets. He didnt get much and within 10 minutes we had made him down a bunch of hydrogen peroxide (per the vet's directions) and he threw up what he had swallowed.

Second story... My sister in law's dog got into some rat poison and they didnt know until it was too late. They took him into the vet's and they figured out what had happened but he was too far along to help. He was only 2 years old.

You've gotta figure.. something that smells good to rodents will smell good to dogs.

Wow, you are lucky to have caught that! In my animal nutrition class, my professor says by the time you notice something if wrong, it's too late. I'm glad he's okay!!!

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes.:) Desi came over this morning and he seemed to be back close to normal. Running after Koko with tail wags and kisses. I guess we are lucky we caught it in time. When I saw him Sunday I didn't have much hope for him.

All right!!! Way to go Desi!!! Thanks Koko!
Did Koko get that steak to help replenish his blood after donating to Desi?? I think filet mignon or prime rib would fit the bill!!! :D

Wow, Desi is one lucky pup. Especially with being a small breed. Way to go Koko!! :D

My friend had a Rottie that got into rat poison. I went with her to the ER vet and they did the activated charcoal and all that. She was fine and then later we realized she was pregnant. She had 4 or 5 puppies (I can't remember now, it was so long ago) and only one ended up surviving (of course we named him Lucky). We think it may have been due to the poison she ate while pregnant. But she lived a full life to the age of 13. :)

Ellie,

I know that Koko would love a steak or prime rib. It is unfortunate that
they don't love her. Without exception when she eats any meat be it
steak, hamburger, or Chicken she is sick the next day. I have to be sure
no one feeds her anything like that when we are on an outing otherwise I have a sick puppy the next day. They big rawhide bone Desi gave her will have to do.
