For those still interested in Killian's trials and tribulations. The pace monthly meds are no longer working on his mouth. The dose was raised last month and it didn't even help for 3 weeks. Saturday his gums started bleeding on the walk-a-thon. Today we are going to try a new med and if it doesn't work, we will go a whole new route of treatment with steroids. I hope his liver holds up. The vets (there are two working on him now) are trying to work around his compromised liver. This is a constant battle. But we are not giving up. :(

Oh Sue, I am so sorry to hear that the Meds aren't helping poor Killian. I hope he is not in too much pain. And him having a bad liver doesn't help things. I hope the new stuff will help.
You are so brave and great for not giving up for Killi! Thanks for the update. Your special guy will be in my thoughts.

Oh, Cookiebaker, the threads on Killian's health are so numerous that it would take hours to peruse!!!!! He had been diagnosed with a small liver and multiple acquired shunts after an ultrasound. Multiple shunts are inoperable because there are so many of them and Killian would not survive the surgery anyway. Since his liver is compromised, his immune system is poor, causing many assaults on his body. He has lip-fold pyoderma (under control), fatty cysts (some surgically removed, others under control), etc. BUT his gingivitis and teeth have been a constant source of trouble. He has had 8 teeth pulled to date. He takes monthly meds to try to keep it in control and now it is not working. He is in pain. I must stop it.
Thanks, again, for prayers. We need them.

Have you considered looking in to the B.A.R.F. diet for dogs? You may want to read up on it - and give it a try. Doesn't seem as though it would hurt.
Keep us posted on your pup's health!

Hi, sas,
He has a home-cooked diet of high fat, low protein. It is a diet for his particular type of liver disease. Not all l-d dogs should be on this one.
Thanks for the tip, though. :D

Update:
The med he is taking does metabolize through his liver. He is on a small dose (for the size of a 60lb. dog, he is 106) and only once a day for 14 days. I have to watch carefully for any side effects. I hope this does not affect his liver.
There is no change yet. He yelped this morning and keeps smacking his lips with a quiver. It is so sad to see. I am trying to take his mind off of it by walks and car rides. It takes a few days for the med to work.
I am watching him like a hawk. So does Shiloh. When he lets out a loud yelp, Shiloh rushes to his side and starts licking him. Kinda makes your heart melt! :)
Thanks for your prayers. He needs them. I know I can count on you all.

Have you tried hamburger and rice cooked together. Dogs usually will eat this when nothing else appeals to them. Keep us posted. I have Killian at the top of my prayer list!
Sudilar
09-18-2002, 10:38 AM
Yes, Candy, Killian eats a homecooked diet of hamburger, rice, egg, bread and calcium tabs (Tums) daily, because of his liver disease. I have even tried turkey this morning and he still wouldn't eat. Later, I will try chicken. When a liver-d dog stops eating, even if he is hungry, his brain tells him he isn't and he will not eat. I am still hoping that this is just a side effect of the med he started and not a liver incident. At this point, I will again try to get him to eat anything whether it is in his diet limits or not. There are still hot dogs, steak, etc. that I will try for a short time.
Thanks for the tip, though!!

Well, short-lived celebration. This morning as he started to eat, he must have hit a sensitive area, let out a huge yelp and ran around the house in pain!! Now he's afraid to eat. This is very trying. Can't help him. Wish I could. I'll give the meds a little while longer, and then we may have to pull more teeth, even though it is too early since the last extractions and may jeopardize his health further. This is so hard. :(

Thank you for your on-going prayers.
Last night, he would not eat. So I let him be, thinking this morning he should want to eat something. This morning he passed up his food. I did get him to eat some ham and cheese with great coaxing and the threat of Shiloh eating all the food.
As a result of Woofstock on Sunday, where a reporter from our newspaper brought her black GSD, Killian and I are going to be in a feature story about canine nutrition and diets. The reporter was impressed with the liver diet I feed Killi, so they included him in the report and want a picture me with him eating his food. LOL! I told her it isn't going to happen, he won't eat. So, I guess we'll be either spiking his food with chicken or leaving the food out of the picture! How ironic! Maybe we can substitute Shiloh, she'll eat anything!!! LOL

Oh Sue, I missed your post yesterday about Killi's setback. I am so saddened to hear that he is going through so much pain and you are going through so much difficulties.

Sue, have you ever tried chicken soup?? I was thinking you could maybe make up a bowl of fat free chicken or beef broth with some cooked rice, shreded chicken or crumpled hamburger and even soak some bread in it. Lapping up the mostly liquid soup he would get down the rice and a little meat too. I'm so sad that Killian had such pain trying to eat. He is so brave. I hope he will feel enough to pose for the article himself; eating:) We love you Killi. Please get better.

Thank you for all your encouragement.
When the photographer was here for the photo shoot, he, of course, would not touch his food. She took a lot of pics of him. I hope she got a good one. He really didn't look like his old self. I can't wait for the story to come out! After she left, I gave him some roasted chicken that I had to hand feed him with Shiloh next to him in competition for the food. He ate some! This morning I found Steak-ems (ugh!) in the freezer that my son bought, so I cooked up the whole box and fed him (and Shiloh) Steak-ems and swiss cheese. Sheesh, WHEN he eats, he eats better than me!
Thanks for the tidbits soaked in soup idea, Sandra. I will try that, too. Today I'm going to try just some ground beef and hand feed him. At least now he is eating a little! My son is home today, so Killi's eyes are shining a little brighter for a while! And we go on....

Still very weak appetite. He'll eat a little (mushy stuff) and then stop. This morning I gave him some canned Nutro with braunshweiger and bacon grease. He ate a little, but I had to chase him around the house to do that. I hope this lack of appetite is just from the pills and not a liver issue.
Yesterday Shiloh threw up her guts (sorry, when she up-chucks, that's how she does it!!)! I can't believe how much stuff she had in her stomach!! Today she is fine though.

Killi report:
Shiloh here.
Yesterday Killi didn't eat hardly anything. I got to eat a lot. I eat evrythin he don't. He just ate only a little cottage cheese and american cheese. Today Mom chased him round the house with peanut butter, cottage cheese, beef, chicken soup with lotsa noodles and Flint River Ranch dog food. I must say I enjoyed it all, 'cause Killi wouldn't eat any of it. Finally, Dad says, give him Salmon. When we first got him and he was sick, he ate Salmon. Welllllll, needless to say, I did NOT get any. He ate it all, straight. Woohoo! (for him, not me  ) Tomorrow Mom says she's gonna mix it with other stuff for him to eat. She says she can't believe he isn't passin out for lack of food. She said she hopes Salmon goes on sale or she's gonna needta getta job.
Thanks for thinkin of us,
Good-nite!

Yay Killi! Atta boy! You DO have good taste, though :) Salmon is one of the more expensive fishies...It's ouchie on your mom's pocket book, but WAY TO GO! I am so glad you ate. Salmon is a good, healthy food and I am glad that you gobbled it all up (sorry, Shiloh girl).
I am proud of you, Killi boy. You keep it up, OK? Sue, you are a saint to work so hard for that sweet boy. Your pups sure were lucky to have landed themselves in such a amazingly wonderful home. Not many people would make even half the effort you have made. You are a hero in my book. And a saint.

Amen to everything Leslie said!! :)
Sue, could you try to buy a whole salmon at the store and have them filet it for you, into whatever size pieces you need? Sometimes that is a lot cheaper than buying the individual salmon steaks.
Hugs to Killian and his chunky brother, Shiloh, who has been enjoying all the leftoevers.
Still praying hard, Sue.

Oh, Sue!! Yipppppppeee!!!:D Killi, you have superb taste!! And like I've always said, Star and Killi are definitely kindred spirits! I really had to laugh when I read your post. It reminded me of one of my first PT posts. It recalled the day Star nabbed an entire 6lb. salmon from the bottom shelf of the frig. I chased her and wrestled her to the floor, trying to pry it from her hot little paws and jaws, but alas, guess who won??:D Guess prices are a lot lower on the coast. Here salmon is one of the cheapest fishes; only 3.95 lb! Wish I could send you some!
Killi, Star***Shine here. You keep chowin down on dem fishies. Salmon goes down soooooooo easy, don't it??:) And Killi, iffin you like, me and the Cody Girl will send you some of our very own fresh catch! The udder day at low tide we were chasin down a hole skool a blue fishies dat were jumpin and splashin inna shallow water!! Hearin this good news made us all so happy, Killi Man! Let me know if yuz wants my Mom to send you some secret recipes!;) Love and big slurpy licks, your bestet pals, Star***Shine and Cody Girl.

(And Shiloh, of course!) Humans are not welcome! It's a doggies only affair. Killi up-date:
Shiloh here:
This mornin' Killi didn't wanna eat too much, so I ran over to his bowl and started chowin down when....ughhhhhh. Mom tried this chicken canned dog food....phewie!!!! I did not like it! Now, I like almost anything (including a good bee or wasp at times) but this stuff was ICKY. No wonder the Kill-boy wouldn't eat it. Mom says she'll feed him some good stuff instead. Time to get back to the old beef, rice, etc. meals. Those are GOOD!!!!
Still waitin ta see if the meds keep his mouthy ok!
Gotta go take a nap now, bye!

Sue,
I just hate to hear the fact that Killian has so much
pain with this awful disease. I think they bear a lot of
pain at times and never show it outwardly. When they
do yelp out, you know it must really be hurting them.:(
I hope once he is able to eat more that he starts to feel
much better. Hugs to that brave boy Killian & his loving
Mom.
anna_66
10-03-2002, 08:22 AM
Sorry you were hurting poor boy. I hope your meds can get rid of your pain soon.
Oh, I know that yelp of pain, it makes you hurt too. The other morning Angus was really sore & had a big problem getting up. After he finally stood up, he just stood there & cried, so I just hugged him & tried to get him moving (he usually feels better then, he gets really stiff in his right back leg), gave him an asprin & in no time he was as good as new.
Sudilar
10-03-2002, 08:58 AM
Oh, poor sweet Angus, I am familiar with the pain that your poor boy is going through because my first GSD had hip dysplasia (with surgery to correct) but in the end, arthritis set in. The same with my Great Pyr in that arthritis set in where her ACL surgery was done.
The vet said that Killian's front elbow has arthritis, too. She didn't say anything more about it (because of his more pressing issues), but I fear that there are no meds that he can safely take for it because of his liver. When it acts up, I don't know what our options are. We will cross that bridge when we come to it though.
Well, today Killi ate his homecooked liver diet!! ( I had to add a little bit of hot dog to get him started though). He is still not acting his old self. He is better, not still not well. I think we may have to have the mouth done again even though it is too soon. My poor baby!
Thanks, all.

Thanks for asking, Anna.
Hi, all,
He still has to be coaxed into eating, but with a little braunschweiger mixed in, he is back to eating his liver diet. (whew) His breath is still clear. I hope it stays that way. That is what I am praying for. He is still mopey, not his old self. He doesn't get up to visit with everyone like he used to. He sleeps more than I would like him to. If this continues, he may have to be tested again. I'll wait a while, though.

Because Killian wouldn't eat anything or take his pill this morning, I told him he was a bad dog. He spit out his pill and Shiloh grabbed it. Luckily she only started biting the capsule and it didn't open. I was very upset. That's not like me. I guess I was hoping that he would stay better, but it's not happening. It is so frustrating!!!
Dad, even thought he hurt his shoulder and neck and wasn't feeling good, ran to the store to get him chicken livers and more braunschweiger. He came home and cooked them up. Killian and Shiloh ate it. Dad hid the pill in the chicken liver and Killi ate it unknowingly. Sometimes Dads have to come to the rescue. Killi ate a little for supper. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

Thanks for asking!! Killi is eating less than he used to, but at least he is eating. The part that worries me is that he doesn't seem to have the energy that he used to have. He doesn't jump up to greet everyone all the time, like he used to. He still loves the car rides and walks, but he walks more slowly than before. His breath is still a little bad, but not real bad yet. I'll have to call the vet and see how we will be treating him this month, which antibiotic to choose. I guess he is holding his own....and that's not too bad. I had hoped that the new meds he was given would have held off the mouth bacteria longer. It's a little disappointing. :(
Killi sends slurps and wags right back at ya!!! :D

Just talked to Killi's vet. We are going to pace the antibiotics more frequently. Seven days of meds, then two weeks off, then seven on. Now he doesn't trust me to hand him any food. He suspects that everything has a pill in it. This is going to be fun! :(
Hope this works!!
tatsxxx11
10-31-2002, 04:48 PM
I hope this new regiment helps, Sue. Maybe a steady blood level will help to better keep the bacteria under control. Do you give him the pill whole? Will he take it better if you mix into the food? It's so frustrating when they refuse their meds. Killi is so lucky to have such a wonderful, loving, dedicated Mom. Killi, pill or not, you try and eat a little more, ok??? Hard as it is, try and keep your spirits up, Sue. We love you guys and send you hugs and prayers and slurpy kisses. Sleep well Killian. Star will be having sweet dreams about her bestest pal, I'm sure! Love, Sandra, Star***Shine and Cody Girl!!:)

Well I hope this works for Killian Sue.
I know what it's like when they think everything you give them has a pill in it. When Keisha had cancer on her nose, the pills we gave her made her so moody & tired, she didn't want to take any type of good food from me or Mark. Finally we just had to pop her mouth open & shove it in:( Made me feel terrible, but it helped her in the end.
Sudilar
11-01-2002, 08:28 AM
I wish I could just pop it in his mouth, but that is where the pain is coming from, so he clamps his mouth shut. He is a large GSD with a huge head and mouth. When I try to pry his mouth open, he yelps and runs. He doesn't want anyone around his mouth! When he goes to the vet, she can't even check his mouth, because he clamps it shut. We have to catch looks, when he's panting to see what's in there. (sigh)
Today I tried the "stuffed in a pork sausage" trick and it worked today. I'm sure later I'll have to find something else, cause he looked at me suspiciously. Guess he won't fall for that one for a while. LOL

Oh, poor boy:( It must be just awful for your mouth to hurt so bad.
I sure hope you can keep finding different things to stuff the pills into so he won't figure it out;)

Sue,
You might try getting some fresh frozen Bil-Jac from your pet store or local feed and seed. You can thaw small amounts of it at a time and keep the rest in your freezer. You just make a meatball out of it, and the dogs love it. Never had a problem giving multitudes of pills to any of mine as long as I had Bil-Jac. Hope it will help. And most of all, I hope Killian will be feeling better very soon.

HOW'S ABOUT LIBBERWURSTIE???? Cody just clamps down cause he's a suspicious BRAT!!@! Sue..maybe I mentioned this..peanut butter?????? Hmmm. thinking soft and yummy. Does Killi like flavored yogurt?? Try to help, yet not wanting to hurt.... :(

Ohhhhhh, it's soooooo frustrating!!!!!!!!!
In two days, he's only had two pills and didn't eat two whole meals. He is suspicious of all food and most people who try to give it to him. Polish sausage couldn't hide the smell of the pill! My future daughter-in-law fooled him into taking a pill yesterday and today he took one in salami, but peanut butter, cheese, braunschweiger are all a forbidden food to him..... This is such a fight!! Shiloh just stands by and wonders why he's passing up the good stuff! sheesh!

Would Killian drink sugar water?
Try mixing up a stiff batch of sugar disolved in water - see if he'll lap it up...
Then try disolving the pill in the water...
followed by enough sugar to hide any taste of the pill. Probably best if there's only a minimum of water used - and LOTs of sugar.
Tried jelly yet?
How about Jell-O?
Keep trying - and we'll keep dreaming up ideas to try! :D

I don't think he is ever going to trust me in the food department again! Everything I give him, he drops on the floor and takes little bites out of it, trying to find the pill. Today, he was in the family room at the bottom of the stairs watching me feed Shiloh some salami (he likes that a lot, but remember he figured out my trick) I flung him a piece with the pill tucked in it and without thinking, he snatched it up and ate it as Shiloh came rushing down to steal it from him.
