We got a call yesterday from a guy who goes to the same chiropractor that Mike and I go to and told us that his next door neighbor moved and left his dog and wondered if we could take him. We went over and met the dog yesterday and is he a sweetie. His name is Rinny and he's a year and a half old. He's (I think) a Tree Walker Coon Hound. Mike is picking him up today about 3:30. He doesn't even have a collar. He has a wound on his back and the neighbor doesn't think he's ever had a bath. Mike walked in the backyard and all he has to sleep on is an old crappy couch and the water that he had to drink was green. You know, for someone who spent $500 on a dog as a pup, he surely didn't take $500 worth of care. The neighbor doesn't even know if he's had his shots. I called the vet today and he goes in on Thursday at 4:45 for the once over. He's getting a heartworm test, shots, and what ever else is needed.

Welcome to Pet Talk Rinny!

Mike and Molly, so glad that you found Rinny before he got too skinny or sick. I hope his tests work out well and that he will fit right in with the others.

I'm glad to hear that you are going to rescue that pup! I'll never understand why some people are even allowed to have animals when that is the way they take care of them! People make me so angry, I would like to slap them!

Molly and Mike, you are Angels, again!!!! You are always there for those in need.

Now, I am really angry that someone would do that to a poor innocent!!!! I will not say what I think should be done to them!

I hope that the tests go well and Rinny is healthy. Now he will have a good life.

Mike called me right before I went to lunch and told me that he had already gone to get Rinny. He said he is REALLY scared and had the runs and has had accidents in the garage. He left him in the garage because he had to get back to work. This is the first time he's been in a house. I wish I could go home and just be with him. Mike told me not to go in the house until he gets home, so I'm staying away until about 4 and it's 1:15 now. He's too sweet to be that scared. Poor guy. I feel so sorry for him. Thanks all for your good thoughts.

Arrgh that is horrible that people would do that to a poor innocent animal. I hope that he settles in, even though it probably will take time & patience.

Rinny, we are so glad that you found somebody to love you, and we hope your belly feels better real soon.

We'll keep you in our thoughts!

Trust me, this morning I felt like I had little devil horns. I was so mad at the dogs!! lol I had to shove Rinny in a crate (in which he has never been) and he is STRONG! Sammy refused to go downstairs to get in his crate, Sox, Billy, Jessie, and Max all wanted to go INTO Rinny's crate and wouldn't come out. I usually get to school between 7:15 and 7:30, but today, I didn't get here until 7:45 because of fighting with the dogs to get in crates AND to get Vonney to come in the house. AAAAACCCCKKKK!!! I can't wait until Mike is back on 3rd or at least goes to work at 7am so I don't have to do all this by myself! I was crazy woman!!! lol:eek:

Rinny is awesome though. He's scared to death of the house and didn't eat anything until about 1am this morning when I let the dogs out. I'm pretty sure he has been hungry for a LONG time.

Oh! And to top it all off, the guy who owned him before called THIS MORNING at 6:45am!!!! He decided that was a good time to chat I guess. He doesn't know if Rinny has had shots or not. He told me what vet he took him to, but that's all he knows. When he hung up he told me to take care of him...like he ever took care of him! I know he meant well, but geez! Mike said that the next door neighbor who called us originally came out when Mike got there to take him home and he and his mom both cried when Mike left. He wanted our number and address and everything. I thought that was sweet, albeit sad, that he really wants to keep in contact with Rinny. At least he recognized that he couldn't afford him and wanted the best for him. Needless to say, Mike told him that he could call anytime he wanted to and to come over when ever he wanted to see him. More than I can say for the former owner, who never bothered to call us until today to tell us we could have the dog (after we already had him). I guess he cared so much that it was ok that the dog wouldn't have eaten or had anything to drink for 2 days if we hadn't already taken him. Oh yeah, another thing (btw thanks for letting me vent) when we went over the first day to see him, Rinny didn't even have clean water to drink...it was in an old bucket and it was green!! I guess the guy fed him out of an old coffee can. Need I say more!!

Ok, I'm done now...thanks for listening!!

Wow this so-called owner has a lot of nerve or worse -- he abandons his dog, takes for granted that you take the poor critter in, and then calls you at 6:45 in the morning??????????? He must think he lives on another planet or something where there is no such thing as courtesy or something. I just hope that you find a million $ reward in the dog because you sure deserve it, and that guy doesn't know what he is missing out on!!!!!!

Oh Molly, bless your great big heart! Rinny is one handsome hound! I' know with your special brand of love and caring, Rinny will soon be feeling right at home! Thanks so much for saving this sweetie! Hope things have settled down there~~;)

Rinny is beuatiful! I am sure it will take him awhile to adjust to be takeing care of and having buddies to play with, but he'll fit in quickly!
He is lucky to have such wonderful new owners, since his first one obviuosly not fit to own any animal.

Ahhh and the saga continues....I contacted the vet that he said he had taken Rinny to and she couldn't find the records, but called me about 5:00 and told me she had found them, but they weren't worth anything since he had only had him in once....on December 28, 2000. The only thing I did find out is that he was born on Sept 22, 2000, so his birthday is right around the corner. Oh and they have him listed as a hound mix...so this guy supposedly paid $500 for a mix!! lol Not that I don't think that mixes are worth $500.

But you can't fool us..... we know you're an angel. :D

And the nerve of that guy!!!

Hi Molly,

How's Rinny doing? He really is a beautiful houndie.

I don't know how you guys do it. I know why you do it,
you love and respect animals ! You & Mike really should
pursue founding a shelter & getting some of these babies
adopted into homes that you both can approve of. Please
don't try to over stress yourself Molly. You have a heart as
big as Texas, but EVERYONE reaches a limit sometime. You
know what THEY say, "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody
happy." All The Best to You, Mike and all the furkids. Liz.

How's Rinny? Has he been to the vet yet?

I can't believe the precious owner had the nerve to call. He was giving you permission to keep Rinny? Well, wasn't that nice of him!

He goes in to the vet at 4:45 today. We have had a couple of issues with him, but I think we will be able to work them out. He is EXTREMELY food aggressive. He will even go after the dogs if they are around the food tins. He's being fed in his cage or in the garage until we can convince him he will always have enough food for himself. I found out last night from the neighbors who called us about Rinny, and the mother told me that he never consistently got food and when he did it was stuff left over from them eating...even old apple cores. No wonder the poor guy is food aggressive. Mike gave him a bath and scrubbed the wound on his back and treated it with H2O2 and it's getting better. He is really soft now. He has also been attention starved and gets jealous REALLY easily and will go after whomever is getting attention. That's already getting better though since he's figured out that he really doesn't have to fight for attention...he gets it without having to ask.

He will get a heartworm test today and his 6-way and rabies and probably a worming medicine. We'll get him started on Interceptor in October.

It is so wonderful of you to work on his issues. I hope that once he knows he will be fed and loved, he will feel less aggressive. Good luck!

Off the subject some:
Mugsy, We had over 4 in rain yesterday- dogs were out this AM both are very muddy and Abby has mud up to her knees and even in her ears! But, boy she looks happy! (I have several large holes in my yard from guess who?) So anyway I figure I need to wash feet b/4 they can come in the house and I got to thinking thats 8 wittle or big feet to wash . Then I thought Mugsy has 15 pupers thats 60 feet to wash!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

We just got back and he was very impressed with Rinny. He got his 6 way and rabies and he told me to wait until March or April to have him HW tested because even though he was outside and not on preventative, he was a city dog and so his chances of having them are not very good. He didn't seem concerned at all about it. He also said not to give him preventative until after he's tested. He said that it was close enough to frost day that he wouldn't worry about it. I was pleased with the results. He weighs in at 65.5 pounds and he said that was a very healthy weight and his coat looks wonderful. The wound, he said was totally healed and that Mike did a good job treating it.

He goes in to be neutered on October 10 and will get his second 6way then. Max goes in on the 3rd for his 3rd 12 panel blood test.

Molly, I am so glad to hear that Rinny is in good health and that he will be getting neutered soon! It's good that all your females are spayed as well. Would want any accidents :D

Why didn't the vet have Rinny tested for HW yet? Hope Max's work goes well.

Thanks for the update!

MOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYY!!!!! My hero! Congrats! I was so excited to see this thread!! It means now I have 14 to go before I catch up to ya :D :D :D

Rinny looks like such a sweetie and I'm sure his issues will be ironed out. I am currently trying to rehome a sweet little hound mix that a disabled lady found on the highway :(

Thats odd the vet said to wait on the HW test  I see a lot of city dogs coming into the shelter that have heartworm. Ohhhh but then again Texas is sort of bad for mosquitoes. I feel like putting a net over me when I go out so I don't get West Nile

Can't wait til Rinny is settled in and knows he has all the food and loving he can handle for life :)

mugsy
09-20-2002, 01:31 PM
Our vet is REALLY pragmatic, and I trust him implicitly, so I'm not too concerned. He didn't say that city dogs don't ever get heartworms, but they get them far less often than country dogs. He also said the mosquitoes just aren't that bad this summer here. It's been sooooooo dry all summer that the critters that came out in the wet spring have died because there's just no standing water. I truly believe that if he felt there was a risk that he would do the test. He also always tries to save us money if a procedure is unnecessary at that time. I can't imagine not having him as our vet, but the time is coming because his wife has sort of forced him to cut back on his hours. I guess she's been REALLY pushy about the whole thing. He has definitely will be missed by us when he retires. I told him when he did decide to retire that he had to keep us as clients. He laughed and said he'd see what he could do! lol

I just have a gut feeling that he's just fine.

Max is doing incredibly great. He's truly back to his old self.
