Murphy-Mutt

Photographer's (Me) Comment: -snort- haha...A groomer I am not but he never seemed embarrassed.

Back in 1996 we wanted to get our 2½ year old daughter a dog and living in an apartment meant we needed a small one. Off to the shelter we went, only to have to continue our search for 2 days and into several towns away.
We waited for 3 hours for a trio of pups to be brought in and relinquished by the owner of their mom. Three of the blackest, poofiest 6 week old shizzies showed up and we got first dibs...taking the smallest and naming him Baxter. Baxter it was until we heard the way our daughter pronounced it...then we promptly changed his name to Murphy.
Can't have a baby running around shouting "Bastar-"!!

Murphy never took to dog food, preferring table food to the point of almost starving himself. Spaghetti would bring him from a deep sleep and after having his bowl, he'd wipe his orange beard all over my carpet. He wouldn't go within 10 feet of any kind of squeaky toy...ever! However, he did have this one that we called "Girlfriend"; she was a white fleece and rope dog that he would drag everywhere...I spent hours trying to get her squeak to break. It never did, so for 8 years, we had to be careful in case he heard her, lol.

There were so many laughs with him, like the time he wanted out and he thought the screen was open on the sliding door...he took off so fast that when he hit the screen, his butt flew up and over! Watching him catch snow flakes on his tongue, chasing cats to snort and blow in their ears, and scratching his back on the lower frame of the couch (it was obscene), and barking so hard that he bounced...oh, and playing soccer...those were the great times.

So old age took him from his post today at 3:34pm, for 12 years he was my constant companion, my sidekick, my third foot even though he belonged to my now 14 year old daughter. I was home with him while everybody was at work and school, I groomed him, I stayed up nights when he was sick, I was responsible for feeding him...we all loved him. He followed me to the bathroom, he sat and begged from me...I was momma.

It's all good Mutt...go play now, MawMaw's waiting for you.

It was so sad to read that you lost cute little Murphy. It's difficult to lose one of our special friends any time, but when it's during the holiday season, it seems even more tragic, and somehow the holidays lose some of their special feelings of joy.
He sounded like a comical little fella, and certainly it seems that he really enjoyed life to the fullest. I had to laugh out loud at your account of his mishap with the screen door. Years ago I had a Lhasa that pulled the same goofy stunt - except that it was nighttime and no outside light was on - and he went right thru it! Thanks for reminding me of that! :)

So RIP little Murphy Mutt, and then find lots of antics and adventures to get involved in with all your new friends at RB!

What a sweetie he is. I am truly sorry for your loss. Murphy had a very good life with you and your family, and I am sure that he is smiling and wagging his tail at the bridge in tribute to all that you did to make his life a happy one. Rest easy, Murphy.
