Cincy girl is having another lump removed. This one is a large marble sized, and fairly hard on the outside of her left rear leg. The vet didn't like the look of it, and wanted it off, so today is the day. She is there now and I should have an update around noon.

Please keep the baby girl in your thoughts this morning! She's a trooper, but it doesn't make me worry any less!

Well that didn't take long....

The vet just called and Cincy is out of surgery and waking up well.

He did not like the looks of the growth at all and will be sending it out for pathology. Gross examination he felt it was a neuroma (nerve tumor) which from what I am reading can be either benign or malignant. We should hear something by the end of the week, so please keep the prayers up!

You tell Cincy I had a neuroma - acoustic neuroma in my case - and they removed it and I am fine. Deaf in that ear, and wobbly when tired, but otherwise fine!

That was very sweet of Sadie! Your dogs are very close- I am sure they know when one isn't feeling well and needs the extra sympathy.

I did find the collar. She was really too out of it to bother it too much last evening so we didn't put it on until close to bed time. She was more alert this morning, she had not bothered it at all overnight. Last night before bed it was looking a little swollen, just from her walking around and trauma in general, but this morning, after her being off it all night, it was looking really good. Ralph didn't mentioned anything when I talked to him a few hours ago, so I assume she is being good....

She is suppoed to stay calm for 3 days. Yesterday of course was not a proble, but I bet by tomorrow night she will be begging to play ball and wrestle with Spot (if she isn't already!)

Cincy is still doing well...she isn't thrilled about the E-collar while we are gonet o work, but doesn't seem to mind the no-bite in the evenings. She is wanting to play, but they said she couldn't return to "normal" activity levels for 3 days...I guess that means tonight I can let her loose!

I did feel like a bad mommy this morning when I realized I had not given her any pain meds...but she certainly has not acted at all like she has needed them, jumping on and off the bed and couch, and trying to chase Spot! She is a tough little thing!

Still waiting to hear results of the biopsy...

Good thing Heidi didn't trade notes with Cincy at the last Gathurin about
"How to Get Around an E-Collar" - or you might be havin a *ruffer tyme* of this!

While wearing a "regular sized" E-Collar, Heidi learned how to lay down, curl up,
and then *kick* her bandaged foot INTO the collar (and her MOUTH)!
I can't remember how many times we returned to the Clinic for re-wraps of a naked foot!

The "fix" was the Techs moved her up one size in E-collars ...
It was *HUGE* compared to the size of the Mutt!

Hang in there, Cincy!
And try not to *lick* when the Hoomins are *watchin*!

We got the results from the vet today...although we have not spoken with him we had a message, and the news was not as good as we hoped. Cincy does have cancer, a Grade II Hemangiopericytoma. The good news it is locialized (does not often dpread) and genreally slow growing. The bad news is they did not get it all, and it does have a high rate of reoccurance.

So, the message he left is that he is recommending we wait about a month, let the area heal, then go back in and try to get the rest. We have an appointment to get her staples out a week from tomorrow, so if not before I am sure we will talk to him in much more detail then.

From what I am reading online, a Grade I or Grade II is a managable long term. I don't know what degree of treatment she may need (and I am sure it depends on how succesful the next surgery is), but radiation, chemo or amputation may be eventual options or consideratons. Another thing we have to factor in with her is an enlarged heart, and while she has shown no signs of issues with anethesia so far, I don't honestly know if radiation, which requires daily treaments for 2-3 weeks will be a viable option for her.

Whatever the case, we will do what we can to keep her as happy and healthy as we can! So please keep up those prayers a more succeful operation next go round!

Here are a few sites I have been reading, if anyone is interseted in more details

Oh boy, I wish the news was better. Poor Cincy. But, she'll endure this and may be just fine after the second surgery:

My Oreo had a similar kind of non-metastasizing (local), slow-growth cancer in her front leg in 2004. And like Cincy, the first surgery didn't get clear margins. We did the exact same thing--wait 30 days, and then have another surgery to take a wider sample to get any remaining bad cells and very clear margins. This worked--it hasn't grown back in 4 years.

I hope that this is what happens for your Cincy as well. I'll be thinking of you and her over the next month. It seems like a long time to wait, doesn't it? :)Hang in there, and give Cincy a big hug.

Thanks everybody! And thanks K&O's mom for sharing about Oreo...I hope we are as lucky!

Right now I do have a very positive outlook about this. Last December, we were told Cincy had Dialated Cardiomyopathy, and when I started reading online about it, I thought maybe she'd have 6 months to a year. Maybe the diagnosis was wrong, and she has always had an enlarged heart, or maybe we just caught it so early she has truly developed the ture heart issues yet, but whatever the case, she is the happiest, toughest dog and a year later shows no sings of slowing down.

I can't imagine this tough little pup is going to get a little thing like cancer get her down either. She certainly doesn't know what she could be facing and she goes hard after everything...she sleeps hard (snoring like a fiend!), and plays hard (and never wants to quit!) and she definatly throws herself all in at dinner time too! She lives in the moment and just enjoys it. How can we not learn from her?

Stitches come out on Friday and we will talk more to the vet then and maybe get the next surgery scheduled.

Cincy had her staples out this morning, and the vet said the area is healing well. He feels that although this is an aggressive cancer, since it does have a low chance of spreading, attcking it with surgery is the best approach. He gave us the option of doing another surgery in about 5-6 weeks to go in, remove any un-neccesary tissue in the area and try to completly knock it out that way, or wait until it grows back and then go back in. Rough estimate was that it would be 3-4 months when something may reappear.

We have decided to go after this aggressively and not wait to see if it comes back. So, January 9 Cincy will be going in for another surgery. I'm not sure I completely understand, but it sounds like he will remove the skin and all the tissue he can in the lower part of her leg (think your ankle area). He will leave enough to not effect the blood supply and this should not interfere with mobility. Excess skin from the upper leg will be folded down to cover the area.

His thought is becuase it does not have a high liklihood to spread, even if we had to go through a few more surgeries that was the best approach. He uses lasers, and can section the tissue down to the bone if needed. He can be more precise then radiation and there is less risk to damaging the bone that way.

So that is where we are. No surgeries for Christmas, and early January should get things all healed up well before Spring Dog Park parties!

Cincy is home and relaxing. Surgery went well. They took a section about 4 cm wide and 6 cm long, down to bone/tendon depth. They used skin form around the area to suture the area and you would never know! It sealed up great and looks like it will heal up nice.

There was one small area of concern, but the vet was able to take enough tissue in all directions around it, he did not feel the need to send it out for biopsy.

She is stuck wearing a cone for at least two weeks and is supposed to take it easy for 1-2 days, but otherwise good to go. The area is double sutured and that comes out on Janurary 24th.

Thank you again for all the thoughts and prayers. They sure do work!
