Silly Question... Oust

I haven't really done any research on this myself, I did try to google it and search here but nothing really came up, but I was talking with some classmates and mentioned how we should get some air deodorizers in the cat and dog wards at school and that Oust works pretty well in my house with the litterbox (right next to my desk/bed, though you'd never know it), and a classmate looked appalled and said "Oh, I don't use that because its caustic to pets!!!". Now I don't remember ever reading anything that said it was harmful to pets, and a google search reveals absolutely nothing, so I was wondering if any of you had heard of Oust being caustic? The only information I could find was someone mentioned an active ingredient in Oust was in the same family as the toxin in antifreeze; however, having taken a Chemistry class a few terms back, just because it is in the same family does not mean it is the same element or has the same effects (it may be similar but is not identical). In either case, does anyone know any adverse reactions or health concerns I should be aware of? Thank you

:) I personally Do Not Spray anything around my babies litter boxs or any where else unless it says its for Cats.. I read everything & make sure it is animal approved.. I think your friend maybe right..

Thank you for the information/advice, the only problem is that I have not found any information whatsoever that supports what my friend says. I've read opinions but no supporting information, and that's what I'm looking for :(

I tried looking up info on it too but like you couldn't find anything really concrete for answers. Closest thing I could find (not overly helpful at all) was from the manufacturers website FAQ page.

The most it would say was follow directions on the can and do not spray ON pets.

I guess I don't want to rule out the fact that it COULD be harmful, but at the same time it doesn't seem so unsafe that I can't use it for normal use. I don't spray it liberally ON my pets or inside the litterbox, I just aim it in the air in the general direction of the litterbox or wherever and spray.

I remember when Febreeze came out, there was a big brouhaha on that. I asked my vet. He said that since Febreeze is sprayed on the furniture fabric, then the cat sits on it, then the cat self grooms, it is "possible" for the cat to ingest some and get sick. I decided not to use it.

But I have not heard a word about Oust. So I'm just wondering if the friend was mixing up Oust and Febreeze.

you know what... I just had one oust and was great... I had used other brand before.. but not while my bird were inside (now they are in an outside aviary) many if not all sprays, candles etc are harmful for their respiratory systems.. so I had no odor "destroyers" at all... now they are out and I bought one oust to try and was great but now reading your post made me read the label trhoughly....

:eek::eek: besides not leaving it near children or pets and not using in on pets (common sense to many of us).. it also says do not spray if you have domestic birds... and to ventilate really really well before letting them in again :eek: ... so it is harmful...

birds are so delicate I had to be very very careful even with pans.. only stainless steel as the ones with teflon released fumes (unsightly) but that are very dangerous to them.. so mainly things that were ok for toddlers to even chew on were safe for the birds... so if it ain´t safe for birds it probably ain´t safe for other pets.... but maybe other kind of pets are more resistant or tolerant to it... not sure... anyway back to bird safe products in my house ;)

Birds I know are a million times more sensitive to aerosols than other animals for obvious reasons, but I've just never heard of an adverse reaction to oust like my classmate claims.
