View Full Version : More Filou worries- 1/28 good update post 128

I came home from a fair two days ago and thought Filou was sleeping more than usual. Not having seen him for a week I also noticed that he had lost weight- he is now thin enough that you can see every ounce :( Siegmar reported he didn't had much appetite.
He went for his fluids and the vet was worried as well. He is now diagnosed with kidney failure for two and a half year- we just don't know how long he will make it :(
But he seemed ok- he ate a little, peed (and I should have noticed that it was not much) and cuddled on his own scarce terms.
I was even more worried yesterday because he didn't get up when Tigris got some treats before I went to bed- he usually doesn't miss that date. After some time he came upstairs, went straight to the laundry basket in the bathroom and peed blood on a pink cashmere cardigan. So the poor boy has an UTI. We got him to the vet again this morning and she and us are very relieved that it is an UTI only. He's getting antibiotic shots (she thinks his stomach will not be ook with pills) and something against the pain and I hope he's better soon. Regarding that it is an UTI I think he was incredible brave.
I love my boy so much.......

Dear little Filou, I hope that the medicine makes you feel better very soon so that you quickly regain your appetite. Get lots of rest, and cuddle your parents--it will make you all feel better!

Filou feels a little bit better but it is still difficult to get food in him. Yesterday evening he had half an egg yolk. He pees- but not the normal amount. I noticed that he limps a little on his left back paw- no idea where this comes from.
He's off with his dad to see vet Trude again- he needs another antibiotic shot.

Filou was better tonight. He ate some hamburger meat (you can see that he gets now whatever he loves) and he showed appetite. And what he peed was a bigger ball in the cat litter. Plus he jumped on my shoulder when I came home.
I am so relieved that the meds kick in. Trude the vet was also relieved. She was afraid the blood in the pee could mean his kidneys gave up alltogether :(
I am not taking that boy for granted from now on.......

Filou is fine in terms of behavior but he still doesn't eat enough. He's far to thin and he moves not as smooth as he used to. We have been to the vet today for the last antibiotic shot and she is just as worried as I am. She says his creatinine level is really high and that means that all the organs will be affected. He has anemia and too much acid in the stomach which makes him lose his appetite. His legs and hips seem ok- so he may have arthritic changes in his joints (just like me) and we have decided against medication because he hates being pilled and I can see that he doesn't like this going to the vet anyway.
The kidney failure is also the reason why his immune system is not what it used to be.
We all hope he'll come back and gets over this episode but there is no guarantee.
He may eat whatever he wants- he cannot lose more weight. So today it was an egg yolk and some minced beef. I sat close to him while he had the egg yolk and he seemed to enjoy it :)
If he doesn't gain weight it is a question of weeks or months.
He gives kitty kisses, purrs and behaves as his usual little self. He even climbed the cat tree to the top - and he does it mainly with the front paws.

So while I am sitting here in tears you who pray for him pray that he still has a happy period and no pain.
I am not looking into lots of medication. If I tried to pill him he would go into hide and certainly not be happy. I can only decide for him as I would decide for myself.

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear this. When my RB Puddy developed anemia, I started her on Epogen injections and she did improve, almost immediately. Have you talked to your vet about it? I gave her the injections myself, easy to do since they're under the skin, quick and painless. Also, B complex vitamins were injected right into the bag of Ringers that Puddy needed for her subQ's and that made a world of difference in her. Obviously, I don't know if you're already doing these things but, if not, perhaps have a discussion w/your vet. It couldn't hurt and in Puddy's case, it all definitely helped and improved her quality of life immensely. (((HUGS))) to you and praying that Filou will soon be back to his old self and that you'll have many good years yet w/him.

Barbara and Seigmar,

I am so sorry that I've just seen this news and send all my love and best wishes to you both and of course to dear little Filou. I hope he continues to eat and thrive as best as could be with your kindness and care. He is such a special boy and we all want so much for him to feel well.

In my heart all I can think of is that Filou gets over this bump and is well enough to stay with us for a long time to come. However, in reality I do know that it is up to him how things will go and that you will give him all that he needs to have a quality life. Enjoy and treasure all the moments - they are the most precious of all.

Hugs and healing thoughts are always with you.

Sending all our best wishes for Filou and yourselves. Take care.

Gosh, such a dilemma you have there. I suppose all you can do is what you think he would enjoy having done to him. It is such a difficult call to make.

Personally, I think Abys are not the sturdiest of cats. They spend soooo much time and energy being athletes and I think they fall short of immune system stability.

I wish my Miley girl had had a better immune system and intestine system, but she didn't. It surely broke my heart to see her go, but I just knew that the quality of her life was diminishing rapidly.

Barbara & Sigmar, I hope things turn around for you and Filou. You have tried so hard to keep him happy. I wish you only good things for the outcome.

Love and many, many get well wishes for little Filou,

Sas, Chloe, JuniRose, Lucy and Cinnamon

Barbara, I'm sad to read in your latest update that Filou is still not eating much. But, it is good that he seems to be behaving normally and is in good spirits—giving kitty kisses and purring are very good signs.

It sounds like you have made a good decision about the medication. I know that our kitties hate to take pills, and I remember that it makes everyone (the people and the cat) miserable to have to do that too much.

I will continue to pray for Filou's health and comfort, and for you and Siegmar. Filou is a lucky boy to have such loving parents.

I hope that Filou will begin to eat more and get his appetite back. I can imagine that the UTI must have been so uncomfortable. Maybe as that goes away, his hunger might return? Prayers that this happen. :)

p.s. I think Candace's idea of transdermal gel is a good one. Maybe there is an appetite stimulant in the cream that you could put in his ear.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
Right now the news are a little bit better. Filou was fine in terms of (bad) behavior on the weekend. He also started to eat - about 20 portions per day, some of them as few as three kibbles but also including one egg yolk per day and some minced beef. So he has gained an ounce or so which makes me happy as at least the weight has stopped to go down.
The vet considers again homeopathic meds. They are a little bit easier to administer as they are very small pills or drops so I think we'll give it a try. He had them at several times during his disease but we'll stop it if he gets annoyed with it and stops eating.

Ok, Filou went for his fluids today and there are some good news after he had a fallback 10 days ago :(. He gained 100 g of weight (approx. 1/4 lb) in the last week. He gets this by eating Royal Canin Renal dry food (good for him) and all kind of delicacies: egg yolk, ground beef, liver pate.
He is happy, friendly and very active- but he still has to be watched carefully or he will try to pee in the laundry basket. Maybe this basket needs a major cleaning orgy but I cannot do that before the weeekend. I don't smell anything but that doesn't mean he won't.
Don't stop your thoughts- it feels like a frail balance to me but it sure makes me happier.

Tuesday fluids and an injection of appetite boosting glucose- not much result.
Wednesday the same: first no result. We went to a concert in the evening and came home late- tried to entice the boy with everything. He was around and interested, licked a little bit egg yolk (less than a tea spoon), didn't want his beloved Gimpet paste and not even the Temptations auntie Vio brought.
I was desperate but his behavior was still as if he wanted something and we just didn't know what (mouse liver pate I guess).
Then I opened a sample package of organic chicken and pumpkin which had been around for a while and of which we had checked a second sample when we first got it- nobody had wanted it (as usual with the special healthy food). This time he licked it from the tin but didn't eat much. We put him some on a small plate and on the table (to give him the suggestion he could eat like a human) - and there we go- he came back and ate it. And a second plate.
So Thursday was vet break and when I came home Siegmar told me he had eaten really well. Two little bowls of ground beef. And some goose fat- you can get it here around Christmas time and we bought some. And some liver sausage. And then -oh miracle- even a bit of his own renal food. No I won't spell "spoiled" here.
He goes for another appetite booster today as we want Trude the vet to have the weekend off. She is fantastic and the day we wanted to go to the concert she even had offered to pick him up and keep him at home until we are home. She is not ready to give Filou up and this is a good sign for me.

The appetite booster must have helped, and I hope sweet Filou will keep eating and put on some weight.

Kisses to Filou - and also to Tigris!

Barbara, you do what you have to do. I'm sure if it were really the mouse liver pate that he needed, you would have gotten that for him.

It's good to hear that the little boy is eating. And if it takes to let him eat from the table, then so be it.

Are you kidding, Barbara? We all do whatever it takes for our little ones.
You want the Waterford? You got it! You want this on the good china?
You got it! You would like a placemat and napkin? You got that too!

How about we heat it up for you?

I think when they don't eat it is the most upsetting thing for us because they lose weight so easily.

You continue to do whatever it takes and the "spoiled" word shouldn't be mentioned.

I sure hope Filou continues to eat for you.

That's for sure. When my Puddy was so sick and battling senility, I had an iron skillet on the bedroom floor for her, a bowl of ice cubes in the bathtub, steps leading up to the bathroom sink countertop, I stocked my freezer w/fudgesicles because that's practically all she would eat. Anything and everything to keep her tongue from burning, to keep her hydrated and happy. And I'd do it all again in a nano-second. If anyone who didn't know me walked into my home, they would've called me the crazy cat lady for sure! We do what we have to for our little furkids. Prayers continuing that Filou keeps on eating.

Filou has been eating all the time but he's still not gaining weight. One of the reasons is he has diarrhea once in a while. Unfortunately yesterday he had it badly and we took him right to vet Trude this morning. We call her early and we can anytime come before she opens :)
Ok, so he got some fluids and some pred to keep his bowels calm and she took some blood without any anesthesia (and he didn't like that) to check the urea and creatinine levels. We had done that last time in October and then the crea was even a little higher than today so she was sure he has a bowel infection and it's not a late stage in kidney failure.
He has to fast for 24 hours and that will be a problem because he didn't believe us one word when we told him. Plus we have to get some food in Tigris without Filou noticing. We always fed whenever they were hungry but in moments like this you would be happier with a strict routine. When I took some laundry up to my bedroom, Tigris followed me and Filou not, so I gave Tigris some dry food up there behind closed doors.
The really dangerous thing is: we got 10 ml of electrolytes in water in a syringe and should spray some just into his mouth (not under the skin, there is no needle on it) 5 times.
So we had that comedy show: Two academics try to administer 2 ml of mainly water to a 6 lb kitty. I tried to wrap him in a towel. Ok, when you wrap the front he'll back out at the end. He will wriggle one of his tiny little paws out of the towel and give his dad a long scratch on the hand ( we have our tetanus up to date ;)). He will just turn in the towel so that he looks to you and the other person cannot get to his mouth. I had to laugh so hard that I couldn't keep him. Well after about 10 minutes we managed to get some into him- when he got it he started to lick (it tastes like lightly lightly salted water- Trude gave us some to try) and noticed it was not bad. And he didn't even run and hide under the bed - I think he just considered it a wriggle game- and he will always win there.
Tomorrow it's back to Trude again for fluids- the bad thing with the diarrhea is the dehydration and if he is ok by then he will get this food that consists of 75% chicken breast fillet, 24% chicken broth and 1% rice. It is an organic brand and Trude said he cannot start with anything that has fiber in it (except rice).
BTW- he is naughty and active and even chased his big brother down the stairs yesterday

Oh Filou, you sound like a slippery little monkey - silly boy! ;)

I’m sorry Filou has a bowel infection, but glad you have a good vet who can do something about it, and that it’s not the final stage of kidney failure. Phew!!

You need to “catch” Filou at the right time, and I know that’s easier said than done. Have you tried leaning over him from behind with your legs crossed? That way, he won’t be able to go backwards and you only have to keep his paws in line. ;)

I find that whatever I have to do to Fister, it’s best not to force it. If I do, he'll win. I can clip Fister’s nails without any bloodshed now, if only I’m patient and do it when he’s relaxed.

I hope the vet visit will go well tomorrow and that he won’t keep you awake all night whining for food.

Kisses to Filou, and also to Tigris!

Filou it's good to know you are still a little wiggle monster :) You sure know how to keep mommy and daddy on their toes and amused at the same time. Now if you'll just remember to take the fluids so you can back to eating good stuff - chicken and rice YUM!! It's also good to know you are in such good hands - a very lucky boy

Barbara - an amusing story ... when August (our RB Kitty) had a slight infection in his toe, we had to soak his paw in epsom salts for 5 minutes twice a day. You can imagine how fun that was  I had to wrap him in a big beach towel (just like a burrito) and only have one paw exposed:p Then I had to keep that paw in epsom salt water - you should have heard:rolleyes: the protests and seen the expression on his face  whenever this happened. It really was funny (for us) but not so much for poor August - he was not amused.

Filou sounds like my Lily: Impossible to give her any kind of medication! I actually had to bring her to the vet for getting some oil (as a treatment of her constipation) into her mouth, it's impossible to do it myself here at home.

Headscritchies to Filou and Tigris. I hope Tigris won't tell Filou that he was allowed to eat. LOL

Hope the diarrhea will stop!

Wish us luck for the night. I managed to get tow times food into Tigris behind a closed door.

That is the way Juni is - as well as Chloe. Miley was easy - and Lucy is easy as pie, but Juni and Chloe, forget it. They are fine at the vet, just not here at the house. You might think that I was trying to kill them. Just getting them in to a carrier is impossible. Lucy, no problem again, with the carrier.

I wish you good luck with the fasting and then the repair of his bowel problem. I know how fragile our Abys are and gosh, such a dilemma most times.

Get well soon Filou and hey, give your purrents a break and keep still!

Edwina had her teeth cleaned this week and the vet gave us antibiotics to give her.

Right....

Don put it on her tuna. Then he threw the tuna away.

We have tagged teamed her. The antibiotic is a pink liquid which does not look that good on Don's clothes or Edwina's head.

We have decided she is too mean to get an infection. It annoys me as the bill had $60 on it for the antibiotics...

So Barbara and Siegmar...I have absolutely no advice to offer...

I know some people don't feel right scruffing their cat, but it can really be a helpful technique in such situations. Of course, I am sure there are times it won't work, some cats get super tense when you try to scruff, but if all else fails, give it a try (in combination with the team effort AND a towel, if necessary)

Praying for the best for Filou.

I so feel your pain ... Eve is like a little panther whenever we have to medicate her. It takes at least 2 people and sometimes, that's just not enough:eek:

bowlkat

I definitely feel your pain...... first off, cats are lousy about telling you-- check that: In LETTING YOU FIGURE OUT AT ALL-- that they don't feel well; then they make it a full-tilt rodeo to medicate or treat them.

We have a small, lightweight, female tuxedo with a problematic coat that mats up and needs to be combed out- our vet can haul huge clumps off her with a stainless flea-comb, and she's good as gold; doesn't say a word. But if we come near her with any kind of comb or rake, she screams bloody murder, then tries to PERFORM said bloody murder on us. Total rodeo with maximal opportunity for serious damage to humans.

As to medication-- I have to agree, with two people and the use of scruffing, you should be able to get somewhere, MAYBE even without major damage to anyone. But it's far easier if you can somehow convince the patient that the meds (like the saline) aren't so Godawful...... but, good luck doing that with that pink antibiotic! No cat in our whole pride will go within two yards of that stuff, no matter HOW it might be disguised or concealed...... you're far better off with a pill you can either hide in a bite of chicken or crush and mix with some baby-type chicken or turkey food (Gerber, etc.)- that often works- but not so with that bitter liquid antibiotic......

Good luck-- I hope your kit gets through the bowel probs, that is UTTERLY not fun at all....

Poor Filou.:( I hope that you feel better soon. I use pill pockets for most pills and my cats love them. I'm also able to crush Starr's pred in baby food but he usually won't eat it all so I still have to put it on my finger, open up his mouth, and put it on the roof of his mouth. I also have a Klaw Kontrol Bag which can be also be used to help medicate a cat. Once the cat is in the bag, they can't go any where. Good luck with Filou the monkey cat.:)

Barbara

@jenn: We tried to scruff him. To no avail. He takes advantage of being so thin- the slightest unsecurity on your side (as in "I might hurt him") will be taken advantage of

Ok: there was no diarrhea today- actually nothing at all, only pee. He went to the vet, got his fluids and had breakfast :D
He's MUCH happier now.
We are going to buy more of that chicken stuff and hope he likes it well enough to have more of it- you never know ;)

Thanks for all your get-well wishes- Filou the monkey cat sends a little purr to everyone.

It's good to hear that Trude figured it out. Hopefully, this will help in him gaining a little bit of weight.

We tried with our cats all of the above mentioned ways of feeding them medicine, and for our cats only one works, I crush the tablet and mix it, or the liquid medicine, in some canned food juice and it works :)
