Luke has not been feeling well for a while now and has been in and out of the vet's for the past month. He was doing better but not great. They checked him again today and said he is in the beginning stages of cronic renal failure.
They gave him a med called Azodyl to take and we get to start the dreaded sub q fluids Sunday. Well, they gave him some at the vet today but I am to give it to him every other day then take him in for a recheck on Friday. Hopefully, then it will only be needed once a week or so. One of the vet techs will come and help me the first time.
Plus, they gave us some of the k/d food which he hates. I am allowed to mix it with people tuna if needed.
Luke is 15 years and 5 mo old.
He would appreciate your prayers and so will I.
Please pray for us both.

My thoughts are with Luke. Barbara's Filou has lived with chronic renal problems (and the weekly sub-q) for a number of years. I saw him last month and you would never guess there is anything amiss.
So...keep the faith!

I will definitely keep Luke in my thoughts. My Taz is on the k/d food as well. He eats it pretty good, which was suprising to me. Although, he didn't like it with tuna mixed in it.

My Puddy was in CRF for approximately 6 years or so. In the beginning, she was on subQ's every day, then every other day, etc. and she had only one kidney and did great for years. Luke is 15 and just now developing CRF, so I think that once you get the subQ's started, he'll do great, too. They may be dreaded, as you say, right now, but that will change. It'll become routine to you and Luke and you won't even think twice about it. It'll just be part of your day. And, believe it or not, Puddy liked the canned KD, even the dry, too, though not as much. We'll keep the prayers going for all our PT kitties and Luke is right there on the list. Keep the faythe. :)

I sent Luke to the hospital for the weekend this morning.
The fluids from yesterday didn't do a thing for him and he's not eating at all now. His vet said he may need fluids more often for a few days. I decided it would be best for him if he was there where someone who knew what they were doing could keep an eye on him.
She said he won't be alone since they have other kitties there too. Plus she and her husband will be there even on Sunday because they are putting in more shelves and stuff. So, luke will have plenty of co.
I can tell he is suffering so he needs to be there right now. I sure miss him though. He said tell everyone thanks for the prayers and positive thoughts and please keep them coming.
I thank you too!

Moff, I'm so sorry to hear this - I'm sending lots of positive thoughts to Luke and to you. I hope the sub q fluids and the diet will help him feel better in a few days. You will soon get used to giving it to him, but I do understand if you're worried about it.
Give Luke some scritchies and kisses from me - Fister sends headbumpies.

Just talked to the vet and she is puzzled! She checked luke's kidney functions again and, while they are elevated, they aren't really "that high".
He still won't eat but is resting comfortably and is alert. She is wondering if he may be having a hair ball problem because there was quite a bit when he went to the bathroom. Thing is, if she treats that, he will probably get diarrhea again which started this entire thing.
But I told her to do what she needs to do to get him eating. We can work on the diarrhea again later.
He only needed fluids once over the weekend so that's good too.
So we are still in a wait and see pattern. I'll check back with her tomorrow and let you all know.
Again, thanks for the prayers and keep them coming. Luke says "thanks" for them too.

I also have a cat in CRF, just diagnosed three months ago, my Ash the grey kitty in my siggy is around 13 but could be nearer 15, he was a stray, so the vets are only guessing, the time he was diagnosed was during his dental, his levels also were not that high either.
I also found getting him to eat was terrible, infact he would have slowly starved to death, my vet has prescribed Anaplex, which is a steroid, you may well ask your vets opinion about this, since then he is indeed eating much better, still has on and off days, but has gained a 100grms, so that is excellent, of course they are not without side effects, but in an older cat i think the benefits out weigh the side effects ,especially when you are dealing with CRF,my Ash also has a heart murmur, he is on Fortekor as well, which lowers the blood pressure and helps the kidneys, like i said he has ups and downs, and medicating him is no fun, but it is worth it,he is doing ok so far, and i really think it is what is keeping him alive and comfortable, he can still run up the trees and he is looking well considering, although he has lost a lot of weight, that is to be expected, the other benefit for Ash is he has arthritis and it helps with the pain of that too, anyhow something worth considering maybe.

My sweet Luke is now at the Rainbow Bridge with his pal Leroy.
Turned out he had congestive heart failure and both lungs were filled with fluid. When they tryed to start an iv he went into respitory distress. The vet said they could still try the iv but it would most likely kill him.
I decided to let him go to the bridge in peace.
We both thank you for all the prayers and well wishes. I'm sure they kept him going way longer than if there weren't any.

My jaw dropped when I saw the update on this thread.
HANDSOMEST boy in the world! I am SO SORRY.
Laura mentioned this before - what is it with our PT babies lately? Puddy, Sades, Luke with the filled lungs and congestive heart failure...and Pidge just made it in the nick of time! :(
Did you have a chance to say goodbye? It sounds like it was an emergency situation. But Luke knows how loved he was and what a wonderful home he had for so long...and I know he returned, and returns, that love a hundredfold.

I could have gone to see him one more time but I couldn't stand to see him thinking I'd come to bring him home only to let him down once again.
I sort of had a feeling Saturday that he may not come home and told him about the bridge just in case. I gave him lots of kisses and luvies then.
The vet said there was really no hope for him but I still feel so awful. At least he is at peace now. :( But how I want my boy back!!!

Hope lies over the Bridge where Luke is now, safe and secure and waiting for the day when he'll be w/you again. Don't despair; you miss him and want him back, of course, but time will ease your pain. Until then, lean on your PT friends. We can really be a comfort to one another.

Phred, thanks so much for letting me know my sweet boy is with his pal, Leroy and enjoying himself.
I had to go to the vets and pick up the pet carrier this morning. Everyone hugged me and had tears in their eyes, even his vet. They loved my boy too. Knowing that is a comfort too.
I did find out one more thing; the poor guy had pneumonia on top of everything else. His vet and I are both amazed he was so sick but didn't show it until right at the end.
Many thanks and love to you all!!!:love::love:

Luke was certainly a master at hiding his symptons. He did it so well even his vet couldn't find out everything that was wrong until it was too late. :(

It's worth noting that there are two kinds of canned k/d food. One is the "regular" kind and one has minced chicken. Cats that dislike the regular kind will often eat the one with minced chicken. Also, if neither of these options work, there is k/d kibble, which most cats seem like like.
