New Puppy In The House

Well, I did it. I adopted a little guy from the Southside
Animal Shelter in Indy yesterday afternoon. He's 8 weeks
old, mixed breed (Rottie/Shepherd) they think. He's has the
most beautiful, soulful eyes, and typical Rottie like markings.
I'm sure Buddy would approve of this little guy. Haven't
quite settled on a name yet, but I'm thinking of Smokey or
maybe Duffy. Oh , there's nothing quite like walking around
the kitchen floor barefoot with a puppy chewing on your
toes. LOL. :D I'm getting film tomorrow and I'd like to post
a few pictures for you all to see this little one. He makes
me feel alive again.:D Liz.

Thanks Everyone. This little guy is very smart & I truly think
he's a "keeper" for sure. I will start with the pictures this
evening, just can't wait for you to see my sweetie pie.(Proud
Momma).

I believe I probably made a mistake starting this thread in
Dog Health, but I didn't realize which area I was in when I
started the post. I had just finished reading Trisha0503's
posting of "A Simple Message From Your Pet" posted for
Darin in the loss of Blanca. Something about that beautiful
poem

" You live in our hearts as we do in yours.
Companions such as you are very rare and unique.
Don't hold the love that you have within yourself.
Give it to another like me and then I will live forever.

Your pet in heaven.

That passage brought tears to my eyes, but really does
express exactly how I feel about Buddy and me. He will
never leave my heart, & I do feel his presence , his spirit
will always be with me. Bud would want me to be happy & to share my love with another pup. Love really never dies. How

many furkids, there's always a need for people to help out.

Oh Liz, I was watching the animal planets the Pet Psychic tonight and she had on there a lady who was contacting her dog that had crossed and she had a little grey poodle names Smokey Joe!!!
We have a local DJ on the radio named Smokin Joe.

Luv4dogs. I don't have a scanner or dig camera either, but I get my film developed at walmart and you can have them put on a cd or posted on www.walmart.com and then you can download them onto image station or webshots. Or if you get your film developed at K-mart they put on their website anyway. I am sure other places offer the same type of thing. What I have been using alot more often is www.yorkphoto.com . They are very reasonable and for an extra $1.25 you can put them on their website and download them also. It takes about a week to get their pics back which is what it usually takes for me to get my pics from anywhere else b/c I live about a half hour from Walmart or anywhere else.

Gosh I've been reading so many articles on puppy
training. Dealing with issues such as chewing,biting one's
ankles, etc., a real refresher course you might say. LOL.
Candy (Dixieland Dancer) has given me tips also to help
me in house training. Smokey's doing pretty well for just
one week. This little smokester is just so full of life , I think
he's aptly named. A BIG Thanks for Phred for helping me

Hi all,

Sorry for not posting more pictures as promised.I'm now
working on the 2nd roll. Gosh, Smokey is growing right
before my eyes. He's gained 3 lbs in 2 weeks. He got his
second puppy vacs. today so he can now go to doggie
kindergarten. I signed up for the 1st puppy class today
and it starts Oct 2 in the evening at PetsMart. I'm taking
him mostly for socializing him with other puppies. but I'm
open to learning new stuff myself. Smokey & the kitties are
getting along very well. Especialy my youngest kitty, Pumkin.
Can't wait for the classes to start because I think Smokey
is starting to think he's a kitty too.:D When we were in the
vet's office this morning, Smokey saw a kitty being checked
out and his tail started wagging a mile a minute.:D

Well, Here's my two very special furbabies. My Angel
boy Buddy, and new furkid Smokey Joe.

Moki went for his 3rd shots yesterday(weight 18 1/2 lbs)
and in the waiting room were a litter of five 3 mos old Boxer
pups. They all had a blast sniffing each other, and playing
around.:) It was fun to see him interacting with other pups
his age.

Liz what a great signature you have now, I love the photos of Buddy and Moki together. Moki is really growing in leaps and bounds, he is such a love. I can imagine how much fun he is to have around. This little one is the sweetest,smartest little buggers.
He didn't even whine his first night home with me.I had
to creep back into the dining room and peer into the
kitchen to see if he was alright :rolleyes: I really expected
to be kept awake all night with pitiful little crying noises,
but he was quiet as a mouse the whole night. Moki was
happy to see me in the morning, but I couldn't believe
how quiet he was.

Had a little scare this evening though. Came home from
lunch & a movie with my sister to find poop all over the
kitchen.Even the walls!!! He's never had "the runs" before
so I was very concerned.He acts normal, ate his supper
and has been playing like normal, so I guess I'll just see
what he's like in the morning:confused: . He acts fine.

Well, last night's bm was runny also, but a
very small amount. This mornings after eating
his "output" was just fine.:D

I had someone over to cut my grass yesterday
while I was away and I think the sounds of the
mower & weed wacker so close the house & kitchen
area might have made upset him.I didn't notice
until later that he had chewed away one whole
section of a rug runner that he used to lay on.
Hopefully he'll still be normal when I get
home from work. If not, I'mm taking him over to
the vet's to get checked out.I'm thinking it was
eating that section of carpeting that triggered
this. He's never done this before, and the only
thing different was the loud noises of the
mower, etc. We'll see tonight.

LOL:D Seems he's growing at odd angles. Maybe he's
just started at the ends & is working his way toward the
middle. Moki still has a cute litte puppy face, but his body
is getting bigger.
Oh, the white kitty in the pictures is my
outdoor cat Sugar. A L/H male cat that I found last Dec.
He didn't get along with my 4 (male) indoor cats, so he lives
in my garage with the other 2 outdoor cats(females).

Moki never gives up trying to get Sugar to play with him.:D

Well, the time has come for Smokey to have his surgery.
I've made an appointment for neutering this Friday. The
Vet's office asked me if I wanted them to use the Laser
surgery technique or the regular (under the knife type).
After thinking about it & reading what I could find about
laser surgery, I've decided to go with the laser.They said
there will be no stitches, less bleeding & faster healing.
Only down side is it will cost a little more. Does anyone
here have any experience with laser surgery for spay/
neutering?

p.s. Karen,
Smokey absolutely loves kitties. He even lets them
eat from his dish without a problem. I have to shoo the
kitties away from the "large breed puppy chow":D Liz.

I've heard about the lazer surgery from a woman I go to obedience school with and she said it is so much better. I bet Moki will be much happier with your decision too:)

I dropped off Moki at the vets this morning for his
neuter surgery. :eek: I know, nothing to worry about
they do it every day, right? Well, can't wait to bring him
back home this afternoon.I had the vet tech weigh Moki
before they led him back to the waiting area. Moki is
36 lbs. btw, the kitties are having a party in my living
room.They're playing with all Moki's toys undisturbed:D

Smokey's back home now and seems just fine, just
sleepy. He took a long nap after we got home. Ate his
crunchies at supper & is now sleeping soundly on his
back with both hind feet up in the air. :D He's had a

Moki was back to his old rowdy self by Saturday.They
only made one small incision with the laser just behind
the scrotum.No stitches to worry about. He seems to be
taking this all in stride.He's as active as ever:) He sends
you all kisses:D

Smokey got to experience his very first snowfall (7 1/2 in)
just in time for Christmas.He was a little cautious a first,
some of the drifts were pretty deep. After awhile he just
loved it and played around till he was pooped.:D I got a
chance to get some new pictures & will post some later.

I'm having a new fence put up for the backyard & I'm really
dreading the time between when they take down the old
one & finish putting up the new one.I can't leave him off leash
to run & do his "laps" around the yard anymore and there
are a lot of loose dogs roaming through the neighborhood
lately. I ran into two of them the other day when I had Moki
out front for "walking on leash" training. It was pretty scary
for me, as the one male zeroed right in on Moki & growled.
Moke, bless his heart, has never had a bad experience with
a person or another animal, so he was like, Oh Good, dogs to
play with:rolleyes: I was talking in a gruff voice to the other
dogs and all the while pulling Smokey up the hill & onto my
porch. I don't know if it's mateing season or what, but I've
never seen so many dogs running loose before. I'll be glad
when the fence is finished , but really dread the in-between
time. Has anyone gone through something similar? Ideas are
welcome. Thanks, Liz & Moki.

Liz, I am so looking forward to seeing the pictures of Smokeys` first snow experience, I bet he looks so cute! :)

About the other thing, you do have my sympathy because although I have had similar experiences of non-secure yard and fences and lots of other dogs about, I didn`t find any real answers to the problem, so, sorry, I do not have any for you either! Just the obvious I guess, taking him out on a long leash to do his laps around the yard, and playing with him in the house, a lot!! I so hope the re-fencing is done in record time so it less of a worry for you.

That would be my advice too, Liz. Hopefully it won't be for too long a time. We had one fence taken down and another put up; I think it was 1 1/2 days. Can't wait to see the Mokster romping in the snow!!:D And isn't he the well mannered boy! Good going, Moki!!

I love the pictures of him in the snow, Perry loves the snow, but Daisy does not like getting her feet cold. When we feed her we have to put the food on the rug, she won't eat on the tile, too cold. LOL
