I'm getting Ziggy spayed tomorrow

Do cats (well, ziggy is a kitten, 6 months) need to be supervised after being spayed? I will be at work for a couple hours, and a family member will pick her up, but I'm thinking of asking them if they can take care of her until I get back. Will she get a cone after her surgery?

Is she staying overnight at the vets after the surgery?Supervision would not be a bad idea,she needs to be restricted in her jumping activity. She probaly will not get a cone if she is not chewing or licking her incision.Keep us posted on how she does.katslady

Typically supervision is not needed unless there is some type of complication. Usually it is comforting for the kitty to be with someone familiar that they trust. Spaying is more invasive than neutering, so it is more taxing on the kitty. She should be fine and just keep an eye on when you are at home. :love::love::love:

It's not uncommon for spays to spend the night, however there are some vets that send them home same day.

Either way it would probably be a good idea to have someone stay with your kitty until you get home. In case there are any problems with your kitty staying calmed down once home it would be best to have someone there until you know how your kitty will settle in.

Some vets use a cone, some don't because they believe the cone is more stressful to them unless there's a problem requiring one. Depends on the vet.

Good luck tomorrow and I'm sure your kitty will be fine and back to normal in no time.

My Paizly Poo was just spayed one week ago today, on 9/11. She went in at 7:30 and came home around 5pm. My boyfriend was with her for a few hours and all she really did was sleep most of that time. She was wobbly on her feet, like she was drunk. She'd fall over while walking. I got home around 10pm that night and she had been alone for a couple of hours. She was still a teeny bit groggy and fell over when she shook her head. But IMO someone should be there with her for at least a few hours right after she comes home. Just to keep an eye on her. And she did not get a cone. Do they even make them that small? :eek:

Also, I'm sure the vet will give you instructions on this, keep a close eye on the incision. If you look in Cat General you'll see Paizly got the begining of an infection. I caught it early enough that the infection was only on the surface. What made me question it was a slight redness around it and then the next morning I could see a clear discharge coming from the incision. I made the appointment for that night and by the time she got to the vet there was white pus in the incision. They put her on Clavamox which, unfortunately, has given her diarrhea.

Wow, I hope I'm not scaring you with all this. But it's just good to know. It might sound horrible, but honestly she is still the same wild, fun, playful kitty that she was before the surgery.

As most others here on Pet Talk will tell you, she will be fine. :) I just like to make things a little more adventurous here in my household. :rolleyes:

update:

so they let me take ziggy home. she was very very out of it (still kinda is). she slept most of the day. i feel so bad for her because she wants to follow me everywhere! :(
i just caught her licking herself! oh no...i don't have one of those collars for her...

If you have some stiff paper and tape you can improvise one ... until morning when you can pick up a real one, anyway! It is soooo hard trying to keep an animal inactive when they don't wanna be! You have my sympathy.

i totally just improvise. i used a paper plate. she wasn't so into it, but now she's getting tired and kinda ok with it i suppose.
