This just sickens me. I think the sentence was way to light for the crime they did to the poor cat.

"Two Alberta teens who admitted to killing a cat in a microwave oven were sentenced Thursday to one year probation and 100 hours of community service."

I hope their community service is in pet shelters.
And they are banned from owning pets for two years. Well...if they are still living at home and the family has to rehome their pets, that might be a bit of a slap.
Unfortunately, this was the maximum sentence that the law allowed the judge to give.
I gather that one family has had to move because of the harrassment. In a way, I am glad that these persons got BADLY harrassed by other people - the consequences were 'in their face' every day.
I can't read the story - there is one sentence that hurts too much to read.
I hope these boys are neutered!

Such a sad story. I would be so sad & ashamed if those were my kids. To think this happened at Christmas time.
RIP sweet kitty. Not all humans are scum.

WHAT?
The BROKE into someone's house and DESTROYED it... occupied it for two days, tortured and killed their cat and then wrote those cryptic messages on the wall? and they are banned from playing violent video games?
WTF?
Sorry... "it's in the microwave" and "you had a nice cat" are not the words of just two bored teenagers who made a mistake. They apparently ENJOYED what they did to that poor cat. I don't see ANY remorse in those words. anyone can say "I'm sorry".
That is bull.
I really hate that whole Youth criminal justice act. it's such bull****.
Probation for breaking and entering, vandalism and abuse, torture and murder of an animal.
Sickening. there is obviously a problem with the system when the max sentence for ALL of that is 100 hours community service and PROBATION.

OMG!!! That sickens me that they would let them get off with a slap on the wrist. Write to your State Representatives and demand that the laws need to change NOW. No misdemeanor...MAKE IT A FELONYHow many more murders will it take before this effing State choses to pull their heads outta the sand.

All Albertans should write to their provincial officials and local officials - the laws need to change.

I didn't read the article (I'm getting squeamish in my old age) but I gleaned what I needed to know from previous comments. This is typical, I'm afraid, of the penalty that is meted out to people who abuse and torture animals. Judging from what they wrote on the walls, these kids are practicing at what they probably will do to humans one day. If I was a parent to any of the kids, I'd never sleep w/both eyes closed again.

I was appalled at the sentence. In Ontario those two would have been landing in youth detention if not in jail. I don't understand the judge having her hands tied, those two are over the age limit for that, she should have sentenced them.
Nothing surprises me anymore, a few years ago a mother cooked her baby in the microwave, sure she was found guilty of murder but the baby is still dead.
Where the heck were the parents not to notice that their kids were turning into monsters and needed help before this happened to that poor cat...next time, they'll be torturing a human.

Unfortunately in Canada the youth protection act REALLY protects minors who commit crimes. it's ridiculous. It pretty much takes an act of God for the justice system to actually punish a minor... no matter what the crime. sad isn't it.
I remember back about 7 years ago there was a "gang" in my neighborhood. They were a group of 16 year olds... and they ran around beating other kids... BADLY. One time they grabbed a kid that just came off the bus... I can't remember his age but he was much younger. they tied a rope around his neck, beat the crap out of him and then dragged him around by the rope and then left him for dead. the kid died. do you know what happened to the kids who killed him? Basically the same thing that you see above. Probation and community service. sickening

The system sucks, plain and simple.
