View Full Version : Worried about Keva *Update post 64*

Since Sunday Keva has not wanted to eat. If you know Keva, you'd know that she lives for food...she has never refused a meal. I wouldn't be that concerned if it were Nebo, he did that often when he was younger, but Keva just has never been like this. She's never been even remotely picky. If she sees her food bowls she follows me around howling, she loves to eat.
I've bribed her into eating a little bit of dog food by mixing stuff in it...plain yogurt worked the first time, it didn't work this morning so I bought some baby food (ingredients were just ground chicken and apples) and mixed in, which worked. I took her to the vet yesterday and he couldn't find anything wrong with her, other than diarrhea, he gave me some pills to give her for that. She's had diarrhea several times, I seem to get the dogs with sensitive stomachs, and that has never stopped her from wanting to eat before. I think I've only been able to get her to eat 2-3 cups of dog food in 3 days (she normally eats 2 cups per day). She has even refused to eat treats. She has been drinking water fine and has not vomited.
She acts okay most of the time...she's still been playing and wants to go for walks, but other times she just lays around and you can tell she's not feeling that great. All of the other dogs act fine. Earlier she was running around the yard like crazy. Anyway, I hope that its nothing serious, just an upset stomach for some reason or another, I'd appreciate some good thoughts for her, thanks!

I'm wondering about stress also. When I brought RB Mandy home, Lacey got a mild case of diarrhea. I took her to the vet, she checked out fine. Chicken and rice a few days and she was fine. She also drooled like crazy, something she never did before or since. Hopefully that's all it is.

I thought the arrival of the puppy as my first thought, too.
Hang in there! As the vet couldn't find anything, I wouldn't force her to eat. Just be sureto offer her something now and then.
Sometimes our bodies DO know what is best. Keep an eye on her (as if you wouldn't!) and give her some time. If she drinks, pees, and has some energy, let her system settle itself out. Sending good thoughts to all of you!
Oh another thought: maybe the puppy brought in a 'bug,' you know like at schools where half the kids come down with something all at once? So it should clear up on its own.

Thanks everyone for your concern for Keva. She seems okay now...she ate her food last night with a little coaxing, and this morning she gobbled it down like she was starving. She's eating treats too. She's been running around and playing, I think she's fine now. I don't think it had anything to do with Skya because she had already been here a week before Keva started this and Skya acts fine...plus Keva doesn't seem upset by her being here, she likes her. We did go on a hike before the weekend and she may have eaten something that made her feel a little ill.

I['m glad Keva seems to be back to normal. It's really upsetting when you know something's wrong but can't pinpoint it. Star went through about a two-week stint of odd behavior, not feeling well, extremely clingy (which is NOT her MO), listless... then she just went back to normal. If only they could talk!

Never mind, all is not well. :/ I just found a growth on Keva. I wish I would have found it earlier and had the vet look at it when I was there. I found some blood on her harness a while ago, I looked where the harness would have rubbed and couldn't find anything. Darn thick husky hair hides everything! My mom just felt a scab there, I pulled the scabs off and there's a small gray growth of some sort, its kind of pointy at the top. I thought it was a scab too but after further inspection I'm quite sure its not. I was just at the vet today getting Skya her shots...looks like I'll be at the vet again soon, Monday is probably the soonest I'll be able to get there. So Keva could use some more well wishes! Thanks.

Oh Keva, I just read that you are eating, and in the same read, I see you got a bump!
Bichons are prone to all sorts of lumps and bumps as they age, these start to appear about 5 years old. 99% are nothing to be concerned about, although the harness does sometimes make one bleed. Warts and cysts and . . . there is a third type.
I hope this is a minor issue for Keva and for a worried momma!

Amy, I'm so sorry to hear this.:( Maybe she's going through a picky stage. Some of my cats have also done this.
How are her teeth and gums? The reason I ask is if she has a bad tooth or some gingivitis, maybe it hurts her to eat. My cat Storm went through this and he even needed to have 2 teeth extracted. I know she's still young so hopefully this isn't the case. Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent her way. Please take care. (((HUGS)))

Amy,
I wish I had some insight for you about Keva's situation and I would love to take your worry away. It's so hard not knowing what is bothering them and wanting to change the circumstances. Here's hoping that your upcoming vet visit with Keva gives you more information and a solution that will make both of you feel much better.
Thinking about you and your gorgeous girl and keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed that it's just something minor and can be mended quickly.

I took her to work today and gave her a bath (figuring it would be easier to spot any other "growths" or whatever it is while I was grooming her). I had a couple of my co-workers look at it and they both said it was a tick. I've worked at a grooming salon for almost 6 years now and in that time I have only seen one tick on a dog...and it was alive still, its legs were moving. I'll admit that the thought of a tick did cross my mind when I looked at it but it didn't look like one to me, but I haven't had a lot of experience seeing ticks on dogs either. If it is a tick she likely would have gotten it the last time we went hiking, which was the Thursday before last, so over a week ago. If it is a tick I feel like a bad dog mom :o because I didn't check them for ticks after hiking...but I've been hiking/camping with my dogs here all of my life, and they have never had a tick, so I really don't think to look.
Anyway, my mom and I were looking at it again tonight and my mom picked a scab away from it and a bunch of blood came out of it. It was hard before (I guess because of the scab around it) but now its soft and squishy. I took some photos to see what you guys thought....
She has a vet appointment on Monday so I guess I'll find out more then. Its still not looking like a tick to me (unless maybe its all the way under the skin?), I have no idea what it is. The first pics are before the scab came off, the others are after (I trimmed the fur away too to see it better).
Oh and her teeth/gums are fine, I think she just doesn't feel like eating much.

I've seen (and  removed) a few more than one tick, and I don't think I've
ever seen a tick, or a tick bite wound, that looked like that.
It might be best to not *fuss* with it till the WhiteCoat takes a look.
Whatever it is,you don't want to risk pushing it any deeper into her skin.

Yeah I wasn't going to mess with it anymore...I told my mom not to pick the scab but she did it anyway.
The two people who said it looked like a tick had seen them...one was from California and had seen ticks on her mom's dogs and the other had been to vet tech school. I really didn't think it looked like one but like I said, I have no idea what it is...it looks and feels more like a blood blister than anything. *shrugs*

Doesn't look like a tic to me either. I had to take one off Jack last year, really freaked me out. It had latched on behind his ear. I'm really careful about applying their tick & flea meds on time since then. (Unfortunately RI is infested with Lyme-bearing ticks)

My cockapoos have always been prone to warty growths and they each have their own little ugly structures, not exactly like the other ones. This could be one of those, but of course only a vet would know for sure. Frankly I'm more concerned about the *not eating* aspect. I hope you are able to get some answers at her appointment with the vet. Worry can wear on a fur mom.

they might have said tick because of the color... and looking real fast it could be mistaken by one.. (size/color wise)...

From the pictures it doesn't look like a tick to me, it looks more like a cyst. Any ticks I've seen on dogs at work you can see the legs and I don't see any in your pictures. I hope it's just a harmless cyst and not anything to worry about.

Well the growth is some sort cyst...I can't remember what he called it...he said it wasn't anything to worry about. He said it didn't need to be removed, its kind of bad where it is though because when I put a harness on her it rubs on it and makes it bleed.
He was concerned about the not wanting to eat. Once again the exam couldn't find anything wrong, no temp, etc. So we did a full blood panel, I'll get the results either tomorrow evening or Wednesday morning. So wish us luck that we'll get good blood test results.

Good to hear it's just a cyst. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with Keva. It's the strangest thing, my girls were very picky about eating, but once I got Jake, they haven't missed a meal. Could it still be new puppy related? It doesn't have to mean Keva isn't happy with Skya, but still maybe a bit stressed. Just wondering if it's a possibility.

No results, I called them wednesday afternoon wondering why I hadn't heard from them yet...they said the results weren't in yet. Then the actual vet calls me back and said they lost the blood sample. I was going to have to bring Keva back in for them to draw blood again. Then they called back again later that evening and said they "think" they found it. I guess it was sent to the Las Vegas lab instead of the California lab...I just hope its actually the right blood sample. She's still not eating that great, she won't touch her breakfast but she eats most of it in the evening.

Well the blood test results (hoping it was hers for sure, they said it was) came back and they were normal. The vet didn't think there was anything wrong with her. So basically I think I just paid $200 to find out my dog is picky. Nebo did stuff like this all the time when he was younger, Shiloh (my manager's husky) does it too...so I wouldn't have worried if it were one of them but its just not like Keva at all. Especially turning her nose up a treats and even people food (she's not doing that now, but she did before I took her to the vet the first time). Oh well, I'm just glad she's okay. I bought another kind of dog food and she is eating that better, though she's not crazy about food in general like she used to be. I wish she would have decided to be picky before I bought a ton of the other food, but Nebo still likes it so it will last a long time with just him eating it.
Oh and her teeth are fine...I brush them 2-3 times per week, I've checked them and they look normal. She still chews on her nylabones too.

She seems to be back to normal I think...well a couple of days ago she went back to not eating anything, she vomited and had diarhea with some blood...which freaked me out. But she was fine by the next day, I think she may have eaten some of Skya's food which made her sick. She's been eating her food since then, and even back to howling for it.
