I OFTEN SAY THAT I HAVE NEVER MET A DOG THAT I DIDN'T LIKE-BUT I THINK CATS HAVE IT ALL OVER DOGS. IF THERE IS SOMETHING WORTH DOING AT ALL AND IF THE CAT IS INTERESTED-HE OR SHE WILL DO IT!CATS TRAIN US- ANY HOPES FOR ANYTHING ELSE IS FOOLISH/USELESS.DOGS HAVE OWNERS-BUT DEAR FRIENDS OUT THERE IN INTERNET LAND-A CAT HAS A STAFF OF INDIVIDUALS SMART ENOUGH TO REALIZE THE FELINE IS IN CHARGE OF THE HOUSE/APARTMENT!HEY-STUDIES CAN'T BE WRONG-HA HA. Dogs and cats can make nice with each other, suggests a new study -- so long as the cat is in the home first and introductions are made at a young age.
Well. Perhaps that is the easiest way for them to make nice. But anyone who has seen photos of my bed knows cats and dogs can make nice even when the dog arrives as a senior (age 7 or older).
Around here the cats RULE! Oh, a dog may chase a cat now and again, but it is playful chase. If the cat just stops and turns, the dog stops and cowers! All my 4 dogs have been swatted on the nose often enough to know to leave the cats alone.
Food dish on the floor, dog eating, cat walks over: dog backs away and sits whining for mom to come help, as the cat eats all the meaty bits.
I will also say I wouldn't trust any of my dogs with a cat outdoors -- including my own cats. Once the cat starts running, instinct kicks in and the chase is predator and prey.

 Yup Freedom all your babies are so cute & cuddly together.. However at my house the Bigg Dogs are outside only.. And the Cats are indoors only.. Now they like to watch each other at the back door & in the window seats..

In my house, the dogs were there first.
Then the cats started arriving. One by one, until there were twelve.
No nose swats by the cats, but a few loud "No!"s from mom and everyone gets along fine. Of course there are a couple of low gates so the cats can escape if needed.
No cuddling, by cats or dogs. But respect all around.
I don't think it matters who came first as long as they are introduced properly.
