View Full Version : awww... poor thing!
I was watching a television program about cats last night. It followed one feral female through her pregnancy and then showed her care for her litter (it was very interesting). Well, shortly after they showed the litter being born and all the little kittens squeaking my Lucy ran into the room. Now you need to know that she is not the
most social girl...she will rarely be in the same room as us. I have never seen anything like this. Poor thing ran over to the television set and literally tried to climb into it. She sat and stared at the screen, tried to walk around
searching - all in a sort of a panic. I know that she had a littler before she was fixed and we adopted her. Could she have recognized the kitten squeaks thinking they were her babies and her instinct kicked in? She's never been interested in the TV before! I felt so bad for her!
I started to think that maybe I should get a kitten for her as a companion and to care for???
This is my Lucy by the way:

She's gorgeous aguu!! What a lovely furkid. If it makes you feel any better - our furlady Bagel always comes charging into the room when there are any cats meowing on TV and she seems so upset just like Lucy. She goes behind the TV, paws at the screen and sits on the nearest vantage point watching the screen avidly. As soon as they go off screen -she loses interest.
She's never had a litter either. Perhaps they are just very kind hearted furladies and don't like other cats to be upset.

It's not just kitten noises either. Once there was a tv show that included the sounds of mating cats, and my neutered cat, Sidney, watched with great interest.;)
Then the commercial came, and he left the room and went on his merry way.

Awww...I feel so bad for her. Tubby & Peanut have never showed any interest in the TV whatsoever, even if there are kitties on it. They probably wonder why we watch that talking box so much, but then again, Tubby probably loves that talking box because then he gets to sit on/by me and be petted for hours on end. :)

Edwina has her own videotape   . It is a video for cats and shows birds, and mice and fish (the fish bore her! -- as do the really BIG birds.)
The first time I put it in the machine for her she was nuts...running behind the cabinet...looking everywhere for those durn critters. Now she doesn't get as excited but will sit in front of the TV and watch for a bit (or lay on a chair and watch ;) ) She'll reach up and touch the screen.
However...if the windows are open and she can look for/hear REAL critters it has NO amusement value.
Unfortunately it is not a continuous loop or I might leave it on more...

Emily has developed particular tastes when it comes to cats on TV. For some reason or another the one cat she CONSISTENTLY reacts to is on Start Trek: The New Generation. Other than that TV cats hold little interest for her. But let the local strays come ANYWHERE close to the window and she will come running from the opposite side of the house just to check them out and guard her property :D :D

LOL! Kitty porn?
Calvin loves Animal Planet. He'll watch just about anything except the alligators/crocks. I often wonder what he thinks of elephants and zebra's. Maybe he's a reincarnated lion?

Ritz doesn't pay much attention to TV but we have a sound file on one of the computers that makes a meow noise that makes her come running from anywhere in the house, followed by a worried look.
She also comes running if one of us is making sounds we don't normally make. I had a coughing fit one day, and was sitting in a chair in my upstairs office, she came charging up, jumped on the table and raised her face to mine (we call this act being "nosed" by the cat)....like "what's wrong mom?"
she does have a keen sense of anything that isn't the norm.

Sunny loves to watch all kinds of animals on the Animal Planet Channel. Storm will also occasionally watch. Pepper could care less. Sunny also likes to watch anything that has a lot of action to it. He is my wild kitty and he sure has a lot of energy. I think that cats react diffently to t.v. and the noises that come from it. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pic of your cat. :)

When I first moved into my house, I decided not to get cable TV. Then, I broke down, and had it installed. I would watch animal Planet for HOURS at a time, sometimes until really late! I would have at least three cats watching it with me! I also got one of those Cat Videos, and I place a dining room chair or two right in front of the tv..and my cats love it. Like Edwina's Secretary's...my cats were all over the tv looking for the animals!

Mostly our cats ignore TV, radio, speakerphone, etc.
Then one day I got a copy of the "Jingle Cats" Christmas album. Reaction city!
I had heard that cat meows might be some form of language. That CD, along with a book on cats and a special on PBS, gave me enough to peice together why Lamoni was walking around complaining and Fifi attacked the speakers, but only during certain spots of certain songs.
I don't play that CD around them (unless they have been bad).

oh she's is so cute. I bet she would like having a kitten to play with.
I also vote for a companion for Lucy! My daughter's cat, Gabe, although he loved being around humans was not particularly friendly to strangers in particular. He now lives with Pet Talk's very own Graemer and Miley (furkids of sasvermont) and he has had a total change of personality (perhaps we can give some credit to that fresh Vermont air!). I think Lucy would really enjoy a friend to play with. My cats are constantly interacting with each other and we adopted Andy 3 years after getting Trevor. Within a couple of weeks they had bonded to the point that you would think they were littermates.
Andy is my TV watcher. If animal planet is on, he is watching it. He also goes around to the back of the TV to try and see if they are in there, after pawing at the front of the screen. Sometimes he will actually sit right in front of the TV on the floor just looking up. It's the cutest thing. I always have the temptation to say to him "Andy you are sitting too close to the TV - don't you know it will ruin your eyes" hehe! (something my parents always said to me.) :D
