View Full Version : The Verdict for Jack is In --- Post #84

spent the night in Toledo last night with my sister but got a phone call from Christy this morning that Jack was peeing blood. It was already almost 11 so I told her to call the vets and see if they would wait until I got home ( which would take about an hour) or if he needed to be seen sooner. Christy packed up the 2 kids and Jack and took him in. I called when I got about 15 minutes from the vet's office but Christy was checking out already and didn't sound like she could explain to me what Dr. James told her very well. So I asked her to ask Dr. James could call me in about 15 minutes.
They did some x-rays to rule out gall bladder stones. She feels that he has a kidney stone which is rare in a dog but like she said whose dog would come up with a rare thing than one of mine! So he needs an ultrasound. I'm like No, I don't want to take him to Columbus!!! And she said for this one of the vets here in town has an ultrasound machine and while it isn't the first choice scenario, she thinks that would be okay in this situation. The down side is they don't read their own ultrasounds but send them out so there would be a delay in finding out what it showed. He really needs to be on a 24 hour fast before the ultrasound because because it would also show feces and other things that might make seeing a kidney stone harder. So she will call that vet's office on Monday and set up an appointment as soon as possible. Meanwhile he goes back on pain pills because she says he has to be in pain (although we can't tell because he is so stoic) and an antiobiotic because he already has an infection going. We will have to watch him carefully through the weekend to make sure he drinks and pees. If he doesn't pee, it means he may have a blood clot that is obstructing his flow and more infection could result. Until they get the results of the ultrasound they don't know how they will treat it because they need to know size, location, etc. So Lot and Lots more prayers needed for my Jackie boy - hopefully it is small enough that he can pass it on his own
An then the vet told me a shocking thing. Someone in the past tried to kill Jack!!!! He is full of buck shot. At some time, someone tried to kill him by shooting him with a shotgun and then leaving him to die!!!!! Can you even imagine? He has the little pieces all up and down his legs, around his stomach - one is very close to his lung and one is just below his spine which would have paralzyed him had it cut the cord and he probably would have died because he wouldn't have been able to get food or water. She said it was a very old wound - we have had him for 5 years now and he is suppose to be about 10. We are just shocked that someone would do something to our poor guy. As those who have met him can testify, Jack is one of the quietest, sweetest, loving dogs there is. Who would have done something like this? How cruel could they be?

 That is truly shocking. My eyes are welling up thinking of someone doing that to poor Jack. He is such a sweetheart! Now its clear why he ruined his teeth gnawing on the chains that were keeping him there. Poor guy was desperate to get away!!! I am SO GLAD he's with your family. Please give him a petting & a smooch from me. We'll keep paws crossed this little stone episode is over quickly.
I just cannot believe that someone would do such a cruel thing to an innocent animal.
That is why I feel severe penalties should be metted out to anyone that is guilty of animal abuse.
I hope Jack can pass the stone and he will be well once again. Please give that sweet boy some extra pats and kiss on his head from me.

Cruelty and neglect abounds everywhere and, like Liz, I feel people who do such things to those without defence, be they animal or human, should receive the severest punishment. *Gets off soapbox*

Jack will be going in tomorrow to a different vet's office to have the ultrasound done. The person who does them does not read them so they will be sent away so I will probably not know until Wed. or Thurs what is wrong. Dr. James showed me the x-rays so I got to see the buck shot in Jack. It definitely is weird seeing these little bits of metal in your dog's legs and around his lungs. She also showed me the areas she is concerned with - the kidney has an enlarged area that she said is probably the stone but the other kidney looks to be enlarged too pushing the colon over to one side. Whatever is going on, I hope there is a quick, easy fix. Yeah, right, this is one of MY dogs.
I have to drop him off between 7:30 and 8:30 but they won't do the test til later - I don't know when I have to pick him up.
So keep on praying for my boy!

Jack had his ultrasound about 2:00 today. The vet called me and said they couldn't get Jack to lay on his side - would I mind if they gave him some medicine that would relax him more. Jack is pretty easy going as long as you don't try to force him into a position. I hadn't thought about their needing to lay him down to do an ultrasound. I of course, said yes and he was ready to be picked up shortly after 3. He is still pretty tired - all he has done is sleep - not even food will tempt him and he hasn't eaten anything in 27 hours. They send the ultrasound out to be read so I should hear back either tomorrow afternoon or Thursday morning. It's hard now knowing what this might be and what it might mean to his future health.
So more waiting and praying!

I hadn't thought about their needing to lay him down to do an ultrasound.
OMG! :p
I never gave that a thought, either, when they trotted off with ole Bowser
to do his kidney / bladder rock ultrasound!
Talk about STUBBORN  ... Dunno HOW they did it!
Lil Tiny Gal that brought him back to the exam room said he did GREAT.
Hard to believe they let him 'stand' - there wouldn't have been room
for the Transducer to fit under his tummy ... SHORT legs, ya'know!
And he was never one to Lay Down on command ...
And they sure didn't use any knock-out drops - he *Danced* back 15 minutes after he left.
How DID they do it??
Bowz *amazes me* every time I think of him!
Glad Jack got through his Ultrasound with nothing worse than a case of the Sleepies.
Prayers on the way for a Good Reading!

The vet who did the ultrasound called this morning with some not so good news about Jack. I then talked to my vet to see what her feelings were on the information and it wasn't any better. In fact, she brought words into it that I did not want to hear
Jack has multiple cysts on his left kidney. His right kidney doesn't even look like a kidney - they don't know if a tumor has encased the kidney or what is going on for sure. His prostrate is also swollen although there is no signs of anything going on to the architecture of it (that's her words) so it might not be cancer. The right kidney could very well be cancerous.
SO Jack is going back to the ultrasound people next Tuesday to have an ultrasound looking down from above so he would be standing up to see if they can find anything that resembles a kidney on the right side. It could be a tumor on the adrenal gland pushing the kidney out of the way. They way they spoke if it is of the adrenal glad and it's that big it is most likely cancer.
Depending on how much interfering the cysts on the left kidney is doing to it's job will depend on whether they can remove the right kidney. If they remove a kidney my vets can do it. If it is the adrenal gland a specialist needs to do it and that means another trip to Columbus. The ultrasound doctor will also be doing more x-rays on his chest to see if there is any signs of growths in his lungs.
None of this information is good. There is no really easy way out with this one.
Please, please pray from Jack. And us. I don't know if I can handle losing another dog so soon after Snoopy.

Well, I just picked Jack up. The tech who brought him out to me said that they didn't see any mastises (spelling) in the x-rays so that is good if there is any cancer any where it hasn't spread to his lungs. The ultrasound will come back tomorrow and we should know tomorrow night or Thursday morning what it showed. I am beginning to wonder if we are going to find out anything and we won't have to have more testing of some kind - which of course, I am not Looking forward to.

The vet who is doing the ultrasounds and testing called later last night to say she was having trouble sending the ultrasound out to the person who reads it and the tec support was already closed. So she won't be sending the ultrasound out until today. She felt she got a better reading on the kidneys - there are two but something is either attached to it or to the adrenal gland. That she felt that probably exploratory surgery in Columbus might be our next thing but of course, we still need to wait until we get the ultrasound person's report and then discuss with my vet. There is also the problem of the cysts on his other kidney which means if the took the kidney with the growth on it, he may be left with another probelm with the remaining kidney. And then of course there is the enlarged prostrate. And that although she did not see any other growths, it does not mean there are not any - there could be microscopic "seed" already out there.
I am not sure what we will decide to do. It concerns us how Jack has been having trouble coming out of the anesthesia. Our vet too said he seems to be having more trouble than most dogs do. She said she cut it in half this time and he still slept all evening and didn't eat last night or this morning. The life span of an Airedale is between 10 and 12 and that is if they have had good care their entire life which we know he has not had. I would rather have him whatever time he has left than have him die on the table or not be able to have any quality of life after surgery. He doesn't seem to be in pain, there is no more blood in his urine so I guess we will just have to wait and see what more we are told and what advice we are given.
So keep those prayers coming!!!!

The news is in and it is not good! :( :(:( I called my vets today - and surprise Dr. Freeman answered the phone - and to top that off, he said he had not seen anything come in but then fax machine started and here comes the report from the doctor who read the ultrasound - he said it is 3 pages long so he and Dr. James and Dr. Jones will talk but this is what he sees as to what is going to happen.
The mass is a tumor outside the kidney - most likely adenocarcinoma. With his age and the other things going against him (cysts on the other kidney), englarged prostate, we have only two options, do a treat-the-symptoms-as-they-come-up approach or remove the kidney & growth (after making sure the other kidney will support him). In this case he would also have to have chemo and/or radiation. There is a good chance he would even die on the table. So the vets will get together and let me know more of what to expect. It looks like even a biopsy will be ruled out unless we want to risk losing Jack as there are many things that could go wrong with were it is positioned and Jack's intolorance for sedation.
As of now I don't know if they will give me a time frame or not. But it looks like you all still get to keep praying.

Even though I knew this was a good possibility it is still hard to accept. It just isn't fair, with all you and he have been through.
He certainly has a great life the past 5 years, after a rough start. Even you hadn't come into his lives, he wouldn't have had that time, or known such a sweet life. And I'm sure he will have more great times too.
Give him big hugs. We're still praying for him!!

Sweetie....it ain't over yet.
I don't know how they decide if the one kidney will support him or not. But perhaps getting the mass out and keeping him comfy on prednisone for a while might be an answer.
When you are able to catch your breath a bit, have a look at these pages - they are from the same site, but I am trying to keep it simple...I understand how overwhelmed you can be. In addition to the links - is there a homeopathic vet you can consult?
The animal info on these links is sometimes in the bottom half or so of the page. This is not medical advice....just look things over and see what you think...don't act in haste.

The three vets have talked and the conclusion is what I have already posted - to do anything else may cut down on whatever time he has left - and there is no saying how long this thing has been growing so he may live longer than we think. There is no way they can tell me what symptoms we might see since there are many that could show up. They do feel it is attached to the kidney and for him to even survive kidney surgery is a big if. He is by no means showing any signs of pain or illness as Kimmy can verify from the dog park visit. He seems to sleep a little more but don't we all when we get older.
I am content with this decision - I really feel he would not make it through any more aggressive treatments. He is such a sweet, quiet boy that I just want him to spend the rest of his time that way. He still likes to take walks, he still is eating and drinking well, he loves going to the dog park. Thanks again for all the prayers and assuredly we still need them. I am grateful to be a part of this board so I can get input and empathy when it is needed. PT rocks!

During the week I have "snuck a peek" here but didn't have the time to type a proper response.
First off, I'm so very sorry to hear the latest news. It so unfair that this should happen to such a sweet boy and to such a loving family. These decisions are never easy to make but I just have to say that I would do the same thing if I were in your shoes. If his quality is life is good, keep it that way. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease and it definitely shows in this case.
Bless his little heart and bless you guys for loving him so much and doing everything that caring "parents" would do.
Please give him a kiss from me. I will continue my prayers.

I definitely support your position. I truly understand your situation.
My Carly has terminal cancer. She is doing well, but we know it's a matter of time. When she was diagnosed, they talked about doing surgery and a lot of chemo. The surgery sounded almost like gutting her and then they explained the side effects of the drugs. Dick and I talked at length about it and after reviewing what the doctors had told us, we believe that we will give her the best "rest of her life" that is possible. She's had a few set backs, but so far I'm pleased with our decision. In November, they gave her 4-6 months to live. This last week, she celebrated 7 months. Even the doctors are amazed.
Every day you have with your Jack is an absolute blessing. My thoughts and prayers are with Jack, you, and all of your family

I read you last couple posts and I think I have absorbed the situation as best I can. If Hannah or Tucker had the same diagnosis that Jack has, I do believe my course of action would be the same. Life is so short, yet he just may surprise us all with more left than we suspect. The real challenge will be not to melt into sobs when you look at him.
Enjoy every day, Good Boy Jack.

Jack continues to do fiine - he is showing no symptoms of anything bothering him. Which we are all glad of. He is just so sweet and loving. For some reason he seems to be getting more attached to me. Now he is the one to follow me around more. I went in the bedroom and locked the door to get away from the grandkids for a little while and who comes barking at my door - but Jack. He came in, came over for some ear rubs and then went to his bed and laid down. He is just a sweetie!

Ashley, thanks for asking about Jack and continuing to pray for him. He is doing very well. His appetite is good, he still sleeps alot but he also lets Tucker know when he is being a pest. We took him to the dog park last Sunday about noon and although we were there only about an hour, he got overheated and had a hard time with his breathing when we got home. So I think hot day dog park trips are going to be a thing of the past for him. He didn't do any running - just his usual slow walk around the park sniffing everything along the way. The gasping for air was very scary. I should have called the vet to find out what they think but haven't.
I hope you are doing well up at the cabin. Is Jack back with you? I think it would be lonely and scary to be up there all by yourself.

Jack is doing great! He is still eating well, sleeping well and for the most part acting well. He does have a lot more trouble with the heat than he ever has before so we have to be careful how long he is outside but that is not really hard since he barks when he wants back in - it's just that sometimes my husband has selective hearing and if it isn't coming out of the TV or he has to move to take care of it, he doesn't hear anything.
It does seem sometimes even in the house, he is breathing harder - the vet says it is hard to know why - he could be feeling a little uncomfortable and that unless he is showing that he is pain there is little we can do. And it doesn't usually last for very long so who knows.
Since he has been eating better and since he had lost so much weight my husband has been feeding him a 3rd bowl of food at night. I have to wonder if this is a good idea because right now although the tumor seems to be pushing the colon over a little everything else seems okay. I am afraid if he puts on too much weight, it will make him uncomfortable and maybe more in pain. I hate it when dogs and kids are sick - they can't tell us what the matter is and it is hard to not know where it hurts!
Thanks for asking.
On a side note, Jack has always been a digger - he loves to dig a hole and then no matter how big or small he tries to lie in the cooler ground. Although sometimes I think he just digs to dig. He hasn't shown much interest in it this summer. I am working on a new "rock" garden and was moving some dirt around so I filled in one of his and his siblings bigger hole. Last night he was out by himself - meaning no other dogs - and I found him sniffing into the hole and starting to dig. He must be feeling a little better!:o
