View Full Version : Taffy can't breathe!

I'm crossposting about Taffy in hopes that funds can be raised towards the surgery she needs to remove a mass that is obstructing her airway. You can go to https://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2008-06-05.7999854591/groupaction_view to read more about her and donate. Please send this link to anyone you think might donate.
Taffy's Mom has already raised a lot of money for treatments and medicine that did not work. A mass was found that needs to be removed. They know it's not cancer (Thank God), so with the surgery Taffy could live for many years. I just can't imagine the agony Taffy must be in gasping for every breath. :(
From the fundable site:
The $3,800 is the low end of the estimate. It could go as far as $5,300. She has a mass behind her soft palet that needs to be removed. If that doesn't help, she will need a permanent Tracheostomy to breath. She has had a Soft Palet disection that did not help and has been on Steriods that aren't working. She can only be on them for another 4 weeks at most, without harming her other organs. She is only 7 1/2. She is all I have. She has not slept since Feb. She gets little 15 seconds to a few mins. at a time because she can't breath with her mouth closed. She was such a happy little dog. Won't you please help her be that way again? She is also on IMOM.org. You can read about her under "Happy Endings"-Taffy Geary. Thank you, Donna

The owner says iMom halted funding. If that is the case, what is Taffy's thread doing under "Happy Endings?"
Maybe I missed part of the story....
On the blog June 4:
Well, IMOM won't re-open Taffy's case. So, I'll have to do what I don't want to pretty soon.
Thanks to all who tried to save her.

IMOM won't reopen Taffy's case. They didn't halt fundraising.
As I understand it, IMOM raised all the funds for the original surgery, after care and medication. The recommended surgery may or may not have really been necessary -- it did not fix the problem. Now a mass has been found and tested and found to not be cancerous. IMOM won't raise funds more than once for a pet/applicant. So, her Mom is looking elsewhere to raise funds for this surgery.

Taffy has $980 towards her life-saving surgery. Thank you so much! Please cross-post Taffy's story with the fundraising link. If the whole amount is not raised, all donations will be returned. From Fundable's website:
NO MONEY will be taken until this collection reaches $3800

Her Mom (Donna) has posted that Taffy is not doing well. We're all praying that she can make it until the funds are raised.
Please cross-post Taffy's story or e-mail the link to anyone you know that might have $10.00 to spare right now.
Thank you.

I tried to make a donation and received an error. I don't have alot to contribute, but I tried to send a small amount. I'm trying to donate to Sydney in the Cat Health (http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?p=2023335#post2023335) too. How do you choose who to help when there are so many sad stories and people that need help, especially with the cost of everything rising? :( Can anyone tell if my contribution was added? If not I can resubmit, but I can't donate double. :(:(

If you don't get one from Donna soon, please let me know and I'll contact her on your behalf. Taffy's total is now at $1050.
Thank you!

I have tried a couple of times to donate, I even registered thinking that would work. I can't find a single clue as to how to actually make a donation! Like, "donate here" or something...

Taffy's case is "closed" there, though I couldn't find a way to donate either.
HOWEVER - they mentioned Taffy's vet as receiving any further donations:
Added Benefits for Contributors:
If all funds are collected, they will go straight to the Vet's office. California Vet Specialists Murrieta, Ca. (951)600-9803

I've asked Donna (Taffy's Mom) to post on Taffy's fundable page an update on what's going on with her.
In case that takes a while, I'll share an e-mail I received from her.
I had to stop the funding early at $1,500.00, as Taffy will not make it to June 30th. The Vet wants to do Radiation Treatment on her ASAP. I have to call him tomorrow.
I hope no one is upset about this. Thank you to all who contributed.

Radiation? On a non-cancerous mass? I hope it helps...she has some funds to do that, at least....
I am stupidly broke this month, but am sending prayers...many of them.

I believe the vet hopes that radiation will shrink the tumor. They don't believe Taffy can wait until funds are raised for surgery.
I'm very worried that her little body won't be able to hold out much longer.
Please keep those prayers coming.

This is great news...but I still don't see where to donate.
I even registered on the Fundables page and logged in...but I still don't see a "donate" button or anything.
I can't donate for a while yet...but would sure like to know how to do so when I can!
Thanks for any help.

Catty ~ Donna had to stop fundraising so that she could get the radiation treatment. If the vet recommends surgery as the only solution, she will probably try to raise the funds again. I'm sure she'll post it on her blog if/when that happens.
She couldn't wait until the $3800 was raised for surgery. The vet said that Taffy would not make it that long. So, she stopped the fund, so that she could get the $1500, and start radiation.

I posted a comment saying I was glad Taffy was eating better, and hoped she was sleeping better. I also wondered if there was some reason she couldn't take Metacam.
However, even though I have a Google ID, the blog didn't take my comment...so not sure how I can reach her. ETA: The post worked today. :-)

I called the makers of the Synflex today, on her Arthritis, to see how long I could keep Taffy on the double dose, after the initial 10 days. She told me I could keep her on it for as long as I wanted, but it wouldn't change anything and I'd just be wasting my money. And that it could take as long as 30 days to work. Well, as least she was honest and didn't tell me to keep it doubled, so I'd have to buy more sooner. She did tell me it might be a good idea to split the dose, some in the morning and some in the evening when I feed. So I will try that. Not much more to say today. The drainage is still low, for now. I looked at the plastic Kiddie pools today, but they are too shallow for her to swim in. She's almost 12" at the shoulder, so she needs at least 16 to swim. I'd sneak her into the pool here in the park, but I'd probably get caught! Besides, that water is a little too cold. Even though they heat it. Well, time for a mouth rinse. So I'll be back tomorrow.

From Taffy's blog today ~ :(
Sad day. Taffy died this morning, little before 9am. I knew it was coming when I got up today. I was getting ready to take her in, when she died. She was in her favorite spot by the door. She's free from trouble now. I think it was just too much for too long. Maybe if I'd had the money for the surgery in the beginning, it would have been different. She fought, but lost. This will be my last post. Anyone who wants to get in touch with me can email me. Thanks to all who helped, cared and donated. I will always remember her for the happy little dog she was.

How sad...terribly sad...:(
Taffy had surgery earlier which did nothing...and Donna trying to get more money for the right surgery - and Taffy ran out of time....tragic and maddening...
Taffy seemed to be getting there, little by little, breathing better...but, like Donna said, maybe it was all too much for her little body.
Play happy at the Bridge, dear Taffy. Please let your mom know you are ok - she loves you very very much.
