... and I'm worried about the anethesia. He will be 12 soon. If any of you have advice about this, I'll appreciate it. I know I will have to starve him from bedtime.
Recently, when Fister went for his vacciantion and blood work, the vet said that Fister had a slightly lose tooth in the front and one other looked as if it should be pulled soon.
I'm starting a job on tuesday, so I went by the vets today to see if they have time tomorrow - they do. I'll call the vet early in the morning and arrange the time. A friend of mine who has a car, will come and help get him over there. :)
Please send lots of good thoughts that it will go well!

I've never had an experience with Groucho being put under and I do understand your concern. While I can't offer any advice or insight, I do offer my support to you and many prayers for sweet Fister. Please let us know how things go? Thinking of both of you!

Good idea to get him in before you start work, Randi. Our girls have all had their teeth cleaned under anaesthetic and always have been find after it. The girls will be keeping all their paws crossed for Fister having a trouble-free time at the vet. :)
You should leave water down. No food after midnight. That is the advice we are always given.

Poor Fister! :(
And poor, worried Mom! :(
We've got God onna case now; and with the earlier Blood Tests, Doc should be
able to determine that there won't be any anethesia problems.

Aww, thank you!!
Phred, in any case, Tubby and Peanut have their ID's. ;)
KK, I normally ask the vet to give him as little as possible, and will this time too. I'm glad he's a decent guy and very skilled in what he does. :) He had an orange boy himself, and he knows how much I love Fister and how close John was to Fister too, so I'm sure he'll do his best.
Yes, I will have to ring him before 9.00 and arrange the visit. It's a strange feeling... I have never made a vet appointment this late, but then - I don't have so much time to worry.
I have to admit, I had an extra glass of wine with my dinner to calm my nerves. Fister doesn't have a clue of course. I will certainly spend a lot of time to cuddle with Fister tonight. :)
Now, unless I get any qualified replies to whether Fister is allowed to drink or not, I think I'll leave half a glass of water for him in the bedroom, and empty the Pet Mate. I know humans are allowed to drink a bit.

My Pidge is 18 now and she had her teeth cleaned just a few months ago, was put under anesthesia and had no problems whatsoever, so don't worry. Fister will be fine but we'll say a prayer for good measure.....

Filou has to get his teeth cleaned- and with his kidney situation he can only have the slightest possible anesthesia- he is only gone like an hour or so.
I hope they can make it that easily with Fister.
We keep the paws crossed for him!

Medusa, it's comforting to know that Pidge handled it so well. :) I wonder if there are different kinds of anesthesia.
Barbara, thank you, and I hope so too! Filou is about the same age as Fister, as far as I remember.
Should I let him drink during the night?

;) I dont think they are too drink water after midnight.. Thats what my Vet said with each of my babies getting fixed thru surgery..
Randi
05-15-2008, 03:11 PM
Thanks for your reply, lvpets2002. :) I'm going to bed very soon, although it's only just after 22.00. I'll leave the glass of water for now, as I know he likes a sip after reading in bed. Then I'll remove it when I go to the bathroom later.
He's just had a bit of dry food - and then I removed it.
Fingers and paws crossed for our pal Fister. Please check in when it is all over. My Ripley just had some teeth removed at his last dental as well. He did fine and I am sure Fister will too. Ripley had to take an antibiotic afterward as a precaution.
I'll leave the glass of water for now, as I know he likes a sip after reading in bed.
I am so impressed that Fister reads in bed! LOL! (haha! I know what you meant, but it just struck my silly bone! ) :D

Can my cat eat the morning before the surgery?
Your cat will need to be fasting after midnight the night before the surgery. It is okay to leave water available.
That is a quote from this website: http://www.catsexclusive.com/q&aupcomingsurgery.php
This is the title of the article:
Q & A About Your Cat's Upcoming Surgery
Hope Fister does well. Will be waiting to hear an update.

Thanks you so much Moesha, it looks like good info we all can use, so I'll post the text here. :) Fister had his bloodwork done recently, and there was no problems. :)
"Q & A About Your Cat's Upcoming Surgery
Many people have questions about various aspects of their cat’s surgery, and we hope this information will help. It also explains the decisions you will need to make before your cat’s upcoming surgery.
http://www.catsexclusive.com/images/upcomingsurgery.jpg
Is the anesthetic safe?
Here at Cats Exclusive Veterinary Center we take several precautions to ensure the safety of your cat while under anesthesia. We do a thorough physical exam on your cat before administering anesthetics to ensure that there are no underlying illnesses. We use a pulse oximeter monitor during the anesthetic procedure which monitors your cat’s heart rate and respiratory rate. We also adjust the type of anesthetic used based on the health of your cat.
Pre-anesthetic blood testing is important in reducing the risk of anesthesia. Every cat needs bloods testing before surgery to ensure that the liver and the kidneys are functioning normally. Even apparently healthy cats can have serious organ system problems that cannot be detected without blood testing. If there is a problem, it is much better to find it before it causes anesthetic or surgical complications. If serious problems are detected, surgery can be postponed until the problem is corrected. Your doctor will tell you what blood panel is advised for your cat.
Can my cat eat the morning before the surgery?
Your cat will need to be fasting after midnight the night before the surgery. It is okay to leave water available.
Will my cat have stitches?
For many surgeries, we use absorbable sutures underneath the skin. These will dissolve on their own, and do not need to be removed later. Some surgeries do require skin stitches. With either type of suture, you will need to keep an eye on the incision for swelling or discharge. Most cats do not lick excessively or chew at the incision, but this is an occasional problem you will also need to watch for. If there are skin sutures, these will usually be removed 10-14 days after surgery. You will also need to limit your cat’s activity level for the first 5-10 days after surgery.
Will my cat be in pain?
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in cats. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.
Cats cannot tolerate pain medications (aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen) commonly used in people. Recent advances in pain medications have allowed for better pain control in cats than ever before. We administer pain medication before and after surgery. Any cat that appears to be in pain will receive additional pain medication. Providing pain relief is appropriate and is a humane and caring thing to do for your cat.
What other decisions do I need to make?
While your cat is under anesthesia, it is the ideal time to perform other minor procedures, such as dentistry, ear cleaning, or implanting an identification microchip. If you would like an estimate for these extra services, please call ahead of time. This is especially important if the person admitting the cat for surgery is not the primary decision maker for the cat’s care.
What appointments are needed?
When you bring your cat in for surgery, we ask that you allow 15 minutes of time to fill out paperwork and to meet with a nurse. We will schedule a discharge appointment so that we can go over your cat’s home care needs after the surgery.
We will call you the night before your scheduled surgery appointment, to confirm the time you will be admitting your cat and to answer any questions you might have. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to call us with any questions about your cat’s health or surgery.

MORE THAN A FEW FOUND CATS HAVE GONE THROUGH DENTAL SUGERY SADLY.
JOSEPH, JOHN HANCOCK AND MY PRINCESS ARE BASICALLY TOOTHLESS
AND MICHAEL ONLY HAS A FEW LEFT.
I TAKE UP ALL THE FOOD SO THE CAT WHOS GOING TO THE VET CANT EAT ANYTHING. IN JOSEPHS CASE I DONT PUT OUT CANNED FOOD AS HIS GUMS ARE TOO SORE TO EAT THE DRY.
I THINK FISTER WILL BE ALL RIGHT AS THE VETS HAVE THIS PROCEDURE DOWN PAT, AND FISTER WILL FEEL MUCH BETTER WHEN THE SORE TEETH ARE ALL GONE.

Don't worry, Randi. My nephew's cat lost ALL his teeth last year; 2 days after surgery, he was already eating dry food, as if he still had his teeth.

The last time Ripley had his teeth cleaned he was 11 years old. They told me no food or water after midnight. On first attempt they wouldn't do it because his kidney levels were too high (the first sign we had of his kidney failure) but we tried again a month later and that time they told me to let him drink water if he wanted so when they ran the blood work to check his kidney's his levels were better even though still elevated. They went ahead with the cleaning but made it quick so he wouldn't be under long and all went well.
Good luck Fister!!!

Randi,
I'm not sure you'll see this post because I'm rather late responding:rolleyes: however, Eve too had anesthesia for her dental procedure and she was fine:) I can't see that leaving water for Fister would be a problem as hydration is very important to the process.
Your concerns are valid and I don't blame you a bit for fretting - in fact I'm fretting with you:love: Fister is a doll baby and we all want him to be good as new when he comes home:D
We'll be thinking of you and your little man and sending lots of healing thoughts for a successful day tomorrow.

I recently had Ozzy's teeth cleaned, and he is 15 yo. There was no problem with putting him under and he did just fine. He also drank water the night before the surgery.
My biggest problem was that everyone was also "deprived" of food the night before the surgery, so I had some very unhappy campers
Fister will do just fine with this and he will be ready for some shrimp tomorrow night for his treat!

Get well soon. I am sure you will be fine. And if you are having tooth problems, it should be a bit of a relief to have them out.
Juni is going back to the vet in a few weeks, to have one extraction and the rest scaled...cleaned......We still haven't figured out how to pill her..... Since Juni is such a sleek and tiny girl, the vet wants her fluids up before she comes home.....
Let us know how you do Fister boy. You will be in our thoughts!:love::love::love::love::love:

Randi, please try not to worry. My Storm just had his teeth cleaned and 2 of his upper tiny teeth were loose so they were removed. He's almost 12 1/2 years old and he did fine. There are different kinds of anesthesia and it said that Storm did well with induction with propofol, maintenance with isoflurane, and buprenex injection for pain control in the hospital. I'm sure that Fister will do fine and I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers.:)

Thank you for your good thoughts, I'm sure they helped.
Fister has been back for an hour, but is still not out of the anethesia, but it went well. :) He had two teeth pulled.
I was sure he wouldn't/couldn't jump out of the box when we got home, but he did! The poor boy was trying to get to the bedroom. He could hardly walk. So I carried him and put him on my bed and I've been laying there next to him since. Just now, while I was out here, he had crawled to the edge of the bed, so I put him on the floor, so he won't fall down. He's now under the bed.
The vet gave me some pills to give him, they're called Antirobe Vet. I'm to give him one in the morning and one in the evening, for 8 days.
When he got out of the box, I had my camera ready, so maybe later I'll post a video.
I'm so relieved it went well! :)
Good to hear this! Fister will probably be walking around for a while looking like he has had "one too many." LOL! Looking forward to the video! ;)

Y'know, I'm not sure about that but what I like about my vet is that he has an anesthesiologist so that he can focus on just performing the surgery. So maybe the anesthesiologist can adjust the anesthesia as necessary. Just an assumption on my part.

Thank you all! :)
He crawled from the under the bed to under the cupboard a few hours ago, but when I came with some yummy Gourmet wet food I had bought in England, he wiggled himself out and ate it all - OK, it was just half a small can, but I bet he must be hungry.
An hour later, I put a few dry treats for him, very small ones, and I stayed to watch him eat them. It's now 8.30 PM and he still hasn't been drinking. A little while ago, he managed to walk a little bit, in a fairly straight line. He stopped every two meters to rest. One time I carried him to his litterbox, but he was not interested, he walked away. When I did the dishes, he came wandering into the kitchen and miawed for the first time - he even looked at the door! I have now lifted him onto my bed again, so I'll go back and shower him with more kisses.
I feel pretty exhausted, so the pics or video will have to wait untl tomorrow. ;)

After anesthesia Evie walked around like a little drunk:D she was so tipsy but of course, we tried not to laugh:rolleyes: too hard, that is:p
Once she got her appetite back she actually ate more than she should have in the first day but all was well:)
I'm so glad the Fister man is home with his mommy and getting lots of cuddles:D By tommorrow he will be feeling so much better and so will you:love:
Randi
05-16-2008, 02:42 PM
After he finished his Gourmet food, I did put some water in the bowl, but at that time, he was not interested. Then, an hour ago, I sat by him on the bed with a glass of water and practically dipped his nose in it - and he drank some. :p He is also able to shift position now, wihout falling over. He can even lay in a tortellini position now! :D So in a few hours, he'll probably wander out to his litterbox - and then start miawing all night.

So, I have transferred the pictures....
I’ll start with a sweet picture of him from the evening before, sitting next to the keyboard - having no clue what hell he had to go through yesterday.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fister/Fister%20vet%20visit/Eveningbefore.jpg
Then, this is an hour before the dreaded box - he does look slightly suspicious, and he did run under the bed before I got him, so I had to chase him out in the kitchen, where my friend was ready to close the door.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fister/Fister%20vet%20visit/Beforethevet.jpg
Now, this is my poor boy after he came back, he looks so patetic. :( He was trying to get his spot on my bed and I put him there right after these pictures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Fister/Fister%20vet%20visit/Fnotquiteawake.jpg
I felt so bad seeing him like this. :( The vet had given him an extra shot to wake up quicker, but I don’t think it helped much.
Around 8.00 PM I gave him a little plate of some yummy food, that was after I had put him on the floor - I was afraid he would try to jump down while I was in the kitchen.
So here’s Fister eating - he had quite an appetite and managed very well. :)

Had I not seen him like that before, I would have freaked out, but a few hours after this, he could walk fairly straight. :) And he certainly had an appetite! :)
I did ask the vet to give him as little as possible, and I asked if he could give him something that wore off quicker - he said he would. But this time I came to take him home quicker, so that's why he was still so affected.
Today, it's like he's forgotten all about it and he seems quite happy and is demanding as usual. :D
