Hello,
We're despartely trying to find a home for a part collie/chow 12 year old male dog (Orin). He has a wonderful disposition. Can sit, heel, stay and give paw. No medical conditions.
Orin is located in Palm Desert, CA. Transportation to your location is possible. There is little time left to find him a home. I'll will post a picture ASAP. He's beautiful, gentle and loving.
If anyone would like a wonderful companion, please call Robyn at 760-674-2483.
Thank you..

Is he yours? Is he at a shelter? What's the situation? What's Palm Desert near? (California is a lonnnng state ...)

No Orin is not mine, but rather belongs to a friend name Robyn (see phone above). Orin is living with Robyn, his owner. A situation has arose where Robyn is no longer is a poistion to keep him.
Rather than put him down, I wanted to see if anyone in the Palm Desert area of California would possibly take him in.
Palm Desert is near Palm Springs and two hours from San Diego and Los Angeles.
Orin is such a sweet dog that it breaks my heart to have him taken to a shelter where he'll almost certainly be put to sleep because of his age. I'd take him myslef but I'm already at my limit with 2 goldens and a cat.
He would make a great companion. He's full of love.
Please reply to this post or call Robyn if you know of anyone who can help.
Thank you! - Below is a picture

Thank you so much for trying to help this precious pup. Orin sounds so sweet; the seniors really get to me. I am on the East Coast and don't know of any no kill shelters by you. Have you tried www.srdogs.com It's the "Senior Dogs Project." They take in, foster and adopt out seniors. You might give them a try; they might also have some suggetions. They have great links to help you find a shelter or foster home. I will be praying for Orin.

Just posted on your other thread. What a beautiful dog!! And he looks like a teenager:) His pic. brought tears to my eyes. His expression is heartbreaking. Keep us updated! And if you see him, give Orin a huge hug and kiss. Sandra
P.S...The weekend can be a little slow on Pet Talk. By later tonight and tomorrow you should get lots more replies.

Your quick responses mean a lot. I've sent emails to many Collie and Chow rescue site to see if they could help as well.
There is something about "dog" people that always restores my hope in humanity. Dog people are themselves, a special breed.
Thanks again for all your help!

Amen to that John! Please, don't give up hope. We have a Paw Prayer list here, and Orin is on the top of my list tonight:) It's late on the East Coast, so make sure you check in tomorrow. What a special friend Robyn, and Orin have in you.

I hope that you can find a home for Orin. He deserves that. He looks like such a loving boy. My heart is breaking for him. Why do some of the seniors suffer so? After all those years of love, is that what they get? I pray that he gets saved.

Oh Orin, I hope you find a forever home soon! What a sweet, beautiful pupster you are!
If Orin is unable to find a home, please consider sending him to Best Friends Sanctuary (Utah). I'm certain we (members of Pet Talk and/or members from other boards) could arrange a transport for this beautiful boy.
I'll be praying that this sweet face finds a wonderful loving home to live out the rest of his years. Bless you dear Orin.

Orin currently lives with a smaller dog (sissy) and they get along just fine. I don't think he does well cats. Orin says he's trying to keep to tradition :)
Robyn came across Orin when he was 2 years old. He was found tied up at an old towing company in the Midwest. He had been beaten regularly with a chain around his muzzle, and even has the small scares on his nose to prove it.
After witnessing the cruelty, Robyn and her little boys literally took Orin from the property. My understanding is that tow truck company could have cared less and probably wouldn't have even noticed. Orin however had grown up with his brother. When they brought Orin home he was very distrustful and howled constantly for his brother.
A week later they went back and found his brother and took him as well. Both dogs had been severely beaten and malnourished. It took a while but soon Orin began to trust Robyn and has been a lover ever since. Keep in mind this happened 10 years ago.
About 2 years ago Orin lost his brother due to a medical problem.
At 12, he's still got a lot of love still in him. He's been through a lot and if there is one dog who deserves to live out his entire life -he's it. He's a shy, gentle ole man who could really use a break.
All of you have been very thoughtful and caring. I thank you. I'll keep doing what I can to get the word out and hopefully I'll be able to find him a home. If nothing else, perhaps one that is temporary so that we can at least buy more time. Someone out there would probably snatch him up in a second. The only problem is connecting with that person. At times like these it's good know that higher powers have mysterious ways of making small miracles come true. I'm doing what I can and keeping the faith.
Beside, if the tables were turned... I'd hope someone would do the same for me.
Thanks again for all your support - you folks are wownderful.

What a beautiful dog! It's so sad hearing his story. :( He really deserves a loving home! If you don't mind me asking, why does Robyn need to find him a new home?
Yeah I was thinking that Best Friends would be a good idea if you can't find somewhere else! I live in Utah...but nowhere near Kanab, and I have a really cruddy car and an even worse sense of direction...but I'll help with what i can....

John,
Orin is such a handsome pup! His picture and story have brought tears to my eyes. It breaks my heart to think of him being abused, but so happy to hear that he has had a great 10 years since. How wonderful of your friend to save him and his brother from such a cruel situation.
Have you tried posting on Pet Finder (http://www.petfinder.org/post/classifiedhop.html). They have a section where you can post classifieds to help dogs find home. And you can also search for people who are looking for pets as well.
Please let update us on what is going on with Orin. He will be in my thoughts.

John, have you tried 'Best Friends Sanctuary' it is not too far from you and they are in Kanab, Utah. They take animals from all over the country who need help and there is a good possiblity they would take Orin in. He is just beautiful, and it breaks my heart to see him in this situation. Good Luck

Orin.. One dog actually has found a home since but the older dog - well, lets just say i will have to make a tough decision in seven days:eek: :( . the sanctuaries are full.....yes, i've tried everyone i know of. pray hard that both orin and shortnen find homes quickly. (i'm just jealous that orin gets attention and shortnen gets pts! she's a love dog too ;) ) but if i hear of someone who wants a male large dog....he's got my vote!! and i'll make sure to spread the word.

As usual, if we can get Orin to Fort Wayne, I'm sure Mike would be willing to take him. Poor guy. We can't afford the airfare, but if push comes to shove, we will take him as long as the current owner will pay to have him shipped or can arrange transport.

THANK YOU ALL SOOO MUCH FOR YOUR LOVING CONSERN This Sweetie Orin and I, have a 10 year history, but due to some unfortunate events within this last year, we were forced to relocate. The home we are leasing has a 1-pet clause which I was aware of when I moved here. I thought I could "Fudge" a little and slip my Beloved Ole'Man Orin in,unnoticed.....I was WRONG..!!! Now I've been given an ultimatum....Get rid of my "Orrie" or move. I've been crying for a week straight.!!! My heart is being ripped from my chest.!!! Moving at this time is not an option....So I'm left with no other choices than to find another home for Orin or put him to rest with his brother who past on in Feb. He has some minuses, but many more pluses.....He's not nutuered and is 12 years old. But he's a Sweet, loving soul, that loves nothing better than to lay his face or paw in your lap for a love. One seems to forget his advancing age when your around him for a while, he's got a very young spirit... Very well manered and so full of love... very low maintenance....No bad habits except he's not keen on cats....I'm not sure why, but since I didn't get him until he was 2, I'm sure it was formed early on. I must make a decision by Saturday, but please know that what ever is done, it will be done with much sorrow. Thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers. John, U R the BEST...!!!!!

I hope it would work out.. You're such an angel Mugsy!!!
Robyn/John - there are members who are willing to chip in for the expenses in transporting Orin . I know that it's a little bit expensive to transport a big dog like Orin, but we're willing to take a share... I'm really worried on Orin and Shortnen..... I only live in a 1 bedroom apt. and we are also limited to 1 pet per household and I already have my baby Missy with me....
I'll keep on praying that Orin and Shortnen will have a happy ending....
God bless everyone!

doghelper,
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply back, I was trying to get ahold of my friend and finally did yesterday.
I am very sad to say that they can't take another dog. They do have 1 already and they went to get permission from their landlord. They were told no they couldn't have a BIG DOG!!
That just bites..I can't stand it when stupid landlords tell you that you can have a dog....as long as its a small dog.
A dog is a dog what ever the size!
Sorry but I do hope Orin finds a home before he has to go to puppy heaven!!! It is such a sad story and if I could take him, I would in a heartbeat!
I am also willing to pitch in for the expense to get him to a home!
:( :(
SilkysoftRobyn
08-29-2002, 01:26 AM
I agree about the size thing. If the dog-owner is willing to pay a larger deposit that should also be a factor. But I can't change her mind, so I really am running out of options.
I do appreciate so many of you being so supportive....Thanks again...:p

I wish some one knew of a lonely senior citizen out there that needed lots of love...Cuz this is the guy...He's got his face on my leg as I type this with one hand...He gives me paw if I take my hand away from his face to long...:p What a sweet guy this is.!!!

Robyn ~
Before you consider putting Dear Ole' Man Orin to sleep...
Load him up in the car and take a drive out in the Country and Visit some FARMS.
Pick some nice ones - maybe with SkinKids out front... Drive in and introduce yourself and Orin.
Explain your problem and ask them for one of two favors ~
* A. Ask if they'll Adopt Orin and give him a Good Home -or-
* B. Allow him to stay/live in a barn for a few days
... Just long enough for you to make permanent arrangements for him.
You should probably offer to supply his food if it will only be a temporary stay.
Might take several Farm Visits to find a willing one ~
And Orin just might NOT like *ruffin it* in a drafty ole Barn...
But it would sure beat the  alternative ~
An early trip to the Rainbow Bridge :(.
Desperate Times call for Desperate Measures...
Door-to-Door may not be your cup of tea - but it might save your FurKid... ;)

08-30-2002, 11:28 PM
I like Phred's idea, but if you don't know any farm areas ... Call a local church or two - they may know a senior citizen who needs a friend named Orin! I wish nursing homes all had a dog or cat for the residents to befriend ... If Orin wasn't on the whole other side of the country, I have friends I might persuade, but they wouldn't have the money to fly him from there to here, and even Mugsy is closer geographically than we are ...
Hang in there Orin ... and Robyn ... don't give up!

Those are good ideas and would work as a last resort, but we don't have many farms here and out-buildings in the desert can get VERY HOT here.!!! At Orrie's age, I'm afraid to create too much trauma for him. Also, I'm not sure that he could adjust to a life that is very different to the one he has lived until now...Thanks so much for careing about my old buddy..!!! :p
SilkysoftRobyn
08-31-2002, 05:32 AM
So many of U have offered money, and I do appreciate the generousity, but right now, money is not the problem....It's more about maintaining a comfortable quality of life for Orin that is comfortable for him. Adjusting at his age will be difficult, I know that. But wearhousing him would cause more harm than good at this point.

Is there no one, no one at all to take that sweet old boy Orin?
I do hope he finds a home soon. It is Saturday in Calgary and I had to get up and see if Orin has found a home.
There just has to be some young bucks around there that would be willing to give him a good home and care for him.
Please God find a home for Orin before its too late! He deserves to live out his life and not be cut short!!

Had another idea!
Do you have "Foster homes" where you live? I know someone for a foster home would take great care of Orin!
We have foster homes here and they are advertised in the paper.
The dog is placed in a "foster home" and everything is paid for..the food, vet visits, toys.
Don't know if that would maybe be hard on Orin since he is such an old pup but wouldn't hurt to give it a try!
Karen
08-31-2002, 10:35 AM
What about calling churches, Senior centers, etc, to see if they know someone. Many older folks don't want to get a pet for fear of outliving it, but a "senior boy" like Orin would be perfect!

I heard about Orin from a friend who saw his post on Petfinder, and then I was directed here. If you could get Orin transported to us we currently have room to take him in. All dogs stay in foster homes until they are adopted. If he came up here he'd be staying with me. Please e-mail me as soon as you can, because as I heard he doesn't have much time!!!! I really, really, really hate to say this, but I have a sickening feeling that something is amiss with this thread, with Robyn, with the whole saga. Orin has a foster home to go to, Robyn has been on this thread reading twice now in the past hour or two, but no response!!! We here at Pet Talk are very loving, compassionate and caring people who, when the call goes out, will do everything possible to help an animal, a guardian in need. So many people jumped in to come to your aid Robyn. Last night when I read Chrissay's response, I nearly jumped out of my seat with happiness. I cannot, for the life of me, understand WHY, if you are so desperate to re-home Orin, if you have read the most recent responses here, you have not responded with some kind of answer as to Orin's fate. And John....what happened to John??? I emailed and PM'd "you" (same person??) both last night and early this morning with the good news. No response. John declared his reaffirmation in the goodness of humans and especially dog people, when so many jumped to your aid so quickly. Please, could you kindly PLEASE, just drop us a line and tell us whatever became of the beautiful Orin??? Dare I ask you if we should also inquire as to the well being and whereabouts of Shortnen? How peculiar that Bugmom, Shortnen's guardian has somehow also dropped off the radar. Chrissay was hoping for a response from her as well. Because of our pleadings, Chrissay was doing her best to help Shortnen as well as Orin. Like I did with you, I also PM'd and emailed Bugmom; no response. Very coincidental. Also just a coincidence that both needed rehoming due to "moves", that the "DEAD-lines" for Orin and Shortnen were BOTH Sept. 3rd?? Both dogs from S. Calif.?? I am usuallly a very positive person, not prone to paranoia, and do wish to believe in the sincerity and goodness of all people, especially animal people. Please reaffirm that belief and post a response. Most of all, I pray that Orin is safe and well. Honestly, ALL that I am really concerned about is the well being of these innocent dogs. Respecfully, Sandra

I haven't been on during the holidays, and perhaps that is the case with John and Bugmom. Sandra, I too, have a very weird feeling about this. I thought Robyn said she would give Orin a few more days till she let him go. Perhaps she has been away from the holidays.

I'm sorry about not logging in more but I have to have access to my phone for my business and I don't have DSL. I've contacted everyone who was interested in taking Orin and until about 10 min ago, no one had returned my calls or Emails. Until 11pm last night I still thought that John was going to be able to foster Orin until the exact right home came along. That has changed and he is dealing with severe family problems. I finally spoke with Chrissay and it looks as if that's where he will go. Please believe me when I tell you this WAS NOT A HOAX...!!!! I do appreciate the fact that so many have taken an interest in this LOVEY GUY..!!!! As far as the time frame goes....all I can say is I was given until the 31st. But since my landlord was gong away until Tues. I figured I could stretch a little more time out for Orin's sake. But this is definitely the last day..!! I do hope Shortnen is as lucky as Orrie....Bless you all for your hard work in helping out this special old guy....

Hi Phred!
I have been able to touch base with Robyn, and we have transport arranged from a wonderful man who lives in Escondido. He, I believe, will be bringing Orin down tonight. Unfortunately I can't take Orin until tomorrow, due to currently having NO ROOM, but tonight or tomorrow morning three dogs are going to their forever homes. So a very good friend of mine and fellow rescuer will be taking Orin for 24 hours (tonight and part of tomorrow) until I get everything arranged. So as of now everything looks good!! I'll keep you updated. Right now I just need to get a hold of John and give him the directions. :)

Hi everyone!!! Oh gosh you people are wonderful!! So concerned and soo helpful. I really want to apologize to all of you for not posting here and all. I'm really new to this site (haha as you all know!) and I'm still trying to figure it all out! So I'm doing my best hehe...
Well this is how it goes, Orin is coming in early tomorrow morning. John's bringing him up to me. Right now I'm just trying to get a hold of John to see what time will work! I believe he's staying the night in Palm Desert and then driving up to me tomorrow morning.. Tried callin his cell but didn't get through. BUT he left a message saying he was leaving. So I'm sure everything will work out fine.
When I get Mr. Orin I'll post right away and let you all know how everything is going! I'll even post a picture or two =). I'll keep you all updated during Orin's whole stay with us from start to finish. You all are so wonderful to care and help out so much!!!
Thank you..... I'm glad I'm able to help!
Take care and I'll be posting soon!!

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for not posting sooner. As you know Orin is ok. I dropped Orin off to Chrissay early this week. I cannot express in words how impressed I am with Chrissay.
When I got to Chrissay's home I was greeeted by the most beautiful, blue eyed girl. When I first met Chrissay I almost asked for mom. I was blown away at how young she is. Chrissay is only 16 years old!!!!
This is one teenager that all other teenagers should look up to. While most other teenagers are concerned with who's going to take them to the mall, this teenager has established her own non-profit organization, does what she loves to do and provide a service that is invaluable.
I cannot express in words how impressed I am with this young lady. This is one girl who is definately going places in life.
If everyone reading this, who has kept up on Orin's adventure could take a quick moment to write the editor of the LA Times and let them know what Chrissay is doing, I would greatly appreciate it. The email address for the editor or the Los Angeles Times is
[email protected]
This young lady needs to be rewarded for what she is doing. Which reminds me, Chrissay is not alone in her cause. If possible, please dontate $5, $10, $20 or as much as you can to Chrissay or your local dog rescue. Chrissay and others like her work with minimal budgets. If there is anything you can do to help, I'm sure that it will go to a good cause.
I'd like to personaly thank Chrissay for taking Orin and for the incredible work she's done and continues to do. To Robyn for not giving up and allowing me to help find Orin a home. You could only imagine how hard this must have been for Robyn to see her baby boy go. And to all of you who have posted your heartfelt concerns. All of you have restored my faith in humanity!
Before I dropped Orin off I asked Chrissay if I could take a picture for all of you to see.
Again, thanks for being the best group of people I've had the honor of knowing.
Sincerely,
John

Hi Everyone!
Orin is doing GREAT. He's finally adjusted. He was really shy at first, but he's doing GREAT now. He's such a sweet heart. I was sitting outside with him a little earlier. Here's a couple more pictures of the doll.
John, oh what you wrote was just so sweet. I can't express how nice that was. Thank you so much for all the kind things you said.
Orin's a great dog. If it wasn't for all of you he wouldn't have been saved.
He does great with the other dogs.. ha we have 13 here right now!! He only comes into contact with three of the other dogs, and he gets along great with them. He's a darling boy. Such a sweet heart. A real lovey guy.
Thank you again... Orin goes to the Vet on Monday to be checked over. I'll let you all know how everything goes for the sweetie.
Take care
