My brother-in-law's dog recently developed a number of allergies(including to grass!) and to try and help he was put on a meat-free diet. The food the vet has been selling them is $60 a bag! I know I have seen variuos alternative or home food diet websites post here before, i just don't remember where. If anyone could help me find them, or knows of a site where receipes are, it would be much appreciated. I can't imagine speing $60/bag on food...
Thanks!

When we first got Killian, he was put on Fish and Potato (F/P)Prescription dog food. We got it through the vet. It was expensive, but not $60!!

Cincy'smom,
Don't know if this will help but here are two links that
I know of;
http://www.bestfrisbeedogs.com/diets.html
and
http://leerburg.com/feedingqa.htm
both offer alternatives to traditional "dog foods".

Do you have the name of the dog food brand? We had a dog who had allergies (he finally outgrew them) and was on a duck and potato only diet but not $60! It was expensive though.

Get a second opinion. Not so much for the allergies, but for the dog food. Explain the financial aspect and see if there is a suitable substitute.

I really don't have alot of information becuase Ralph's brother lives in Oregon and I heard about this throught the grapevine (Ralph's mom told his sister, who told us) I just thtought if I could make an alternative suggestion it could save them some $$$. I rally don't know what kind of options they have out there, butIi would think Eugene is a big enough town they could work around it. I'll email this weekend and see if i can get some more info.
Thanks for your ideas so far!

How much does the dog weigh? That will determine how big of a bag he will need. My aunt has an food allergy stricken dog and the food was outrageously priced. She talked with her vet about another method. The vet suggested that she make her own dog food and keep it in the fridge. It is made up of chicken and vegetables and other stuff. Maybe your vet will have an idea of an exact recipe or I am sure that you can find on on the internet somewhere. The cost is cheaper and the dog eats very healthy and loves the food. Just a thought.

IVD makes a few brands for allergies, it stands for inovative vetrerinary diets:
-fish & potato
-duck & potato
-venison & something?
*I used to live in Eugene and they are available there but through vets only, some vets might not carry that brand but have him check with other vets as his vet might be able to write him a prescription for it and he could get it elsewhere! But like mentioned above have him speek with his vet & try to find a cheaper diet or one he can make at home!
