so to get back on point....looks who was irritated by hecklers at town hall meetings...in fact having someone thrown out!!
PHOENIX — Sen. John McCain met with an angry crowd at a town-hall meeting about health care reform Wednesday, sometimes having to fight to talk and telling one woman who wouldn't stop yelling that she had to leave.
The Arizona senator hadn't yet opened up the meeting at McCain's central Phoenix church to questions when one audience member continuously yelled over him.
"You're going to have to stop or you're going to have to leave," McCain told the woman. When security guards approached to escort her out, he told her "Goodbye, see ya" to a round of applause.
Now...I am going to sit back and wait for those who were so incensed by the treatment of people at town hall meetings to chime in. After all...this woman just wanted to be heard...right?

I may be mistaken but wasn't this month the worst for casualties in Afghanistan?
Richard, August is now tied with July for most casualties (deaths). And August goes on for 4 more days.

Fortunately the total is about half that number. 44 to date, to be exact. July had 45. However, the total for this year, to this point, is more than in all of 2008.
I think one was too many.

One person being removed, others getting beaten. Hm, McCain had someone removed peacefully. The Unions that support the Dems, beating those opposing HCR. I can see your comparison.

Just think, if nobody died in war, women would still be subjegated, slavery would be wide spread, and we would be living in the dark ages. Better living through superior firepower.

Anyway...my take on Afghanistan is that this is the only war we had any business fighting, because they harbored the criminals/terrorists responsible for murdering over 3000 citizens of the world. This war was IMO badly mismanaged, and only now is Obama making an effort to carry it out the way it should have been done 8 (!) years ago.

I agree with you about Afghanistan. However, those criminals have now moved into Pakistan - do we follow them? I don't think so.

Now you are correct. From NPR -
August Deadliest Month In Afghanistan For U.S. Troops
By Frank James
A U.S. soldier was killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan Friday, making it the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the eight years of the war.
The soldier was killed in eastern Afghanistan when the vehicle he was riding in struck a roadside bomb, according to the military.
All told, 45 U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan in August as the U.S. has surged its military forces into the country with the aim of driving back the Taliban and insurgents.
Roadside bombs have caused many of the casualties since improvised explosive devices are so easy to conceal in the Afghanistan's unpaved roads. Meanwhile, the Taliban learned from observing the Iraq War how effectively deadly IEDs are.
The increasing death toll comes at the same time as support in the U.S. for the war appears to be declining among a war-weary public; the growing casualties are no doubt causing some of that loss of public backing.
Complicating President Barack Obama's challenge is the U.S. military's request for more troops to be sent to Afghanistan which would likely increase the casualties there, further eroding public support.
This whole white text thing and photo-spying is pathetic. Grow up, man.

Do you think we should be helping to improve the living conditions of third world countries? Should we be helping to improve womens rights in countries where women are oppressed? When American civilian volunteers are killed for trying to improve conditions in other countries should we just shrug our shoulders?

Because you're a grown man, aren't you? Or does ES intimidate you so much that you aren't brave enough to say what you think without the little treasure trail? Eesh.
Anyway, on the topic of various Islamic laws...
It's all well and good that we've managed to provide a little more freedom of speech in countries like Iraq, but I worry how far we're willing to push Westernisation on such countries, exactly what the terrorists in these nations are against. We could, or rather, we shall, end up doing more harm than good if we're not careful.
Terrorism is difficult to oppose when the act of opposing gains support. For this reason, I myself am undecided about whether it was just, and sensible, to declare war on Iraq. We removed a dictator, granted, but our very presence stirred a hatred that is difficult to reverse. I'm not a world leader, so I have no alternatives to how it could have been handled. Yet, I do believe we have outstayed our welcome in many respects.

Do you trust Obama and .gov with the internet and private networks?
Bill would give president emergency control of Internet
by Declan McCullagh
Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.
They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.
The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.
"I think the redraft, while improved, remains troubling due to its vagueness," said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which counts representatives of Verizon, Verisign, Nortel, and Carnegie Mellon University on its board. "It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill."
Representatives of other large Internet and telecommunications companies expressed concerns about the bill in a teleconference with Rockefeller's aides this week, but were not immediately available for interviews on Thursday.
A spokesman for Rockefeller also declined to comment on the record Thursday, saying that many people were unavailable because of the summer recess. A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the president's power to take control of portions of the Internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept. 11, 2001. The source said that one primary concern was the electrical grid, and what would happen if it were attacked from a broadband connection.
When Rockefeller, the chairman of the Senate Commerce committee, and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced the original bill in April, they claimed it was vital to protect national cybersecurity. "We must protect our critical infrastructure at all costs--from our water to our electricity, to banking, traffic lights and electronic health records," Rockefeller said.
The Rockefeller proposal plays out against a broader concern in Washington, D.C., about the government's role in cybersecurity. In May, President Obama acknowledged that the government is "not as prepared" as it should be to respond to disruptions and announced that a new cybersecurity coordinator position would be created inside the White House staff. Three months later, that post remains empty, one top cybersecurity aide has quit, and some wags have begun to wonder why a government that receives failing marks on cybersecurity should be trusted to instruct the private sector what to do.
Rockefeller's revised legislation seeks to reshuffle the way the federal government addresses the topic. It requires a "cybersecurity workforce plan" from every federal agency, a "dashboard" pilot project, measurements of hiring effectiveness, and the implementation of a "comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy" in six months--even though its mandatory legal review will take a year to complete.
The privacy implications of sweeping changes implemented before the legal review is finished worry Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. "As soon as you're saying that the federal government is going to be exercising this kind of power over private networks, it's going to be a really big issue," he says.
Probably the most controversial language begins in Section 201, which permits the president to "direct the national response to the cyber threat" if necessary for "the national defense and security." The White House is supposed to engage in "periodic mapping" of private networks deemed to be critical, and those companies "shall share" requested information with the federal government. ("Cyber" is defined as anything having to do with the Internet, telecommunications, computers, or computer networks.)
"The language has changed but it doesn't contain any real additional limits," EFF's Tien says. "It simply switches the more direct and obvious language they had originally to the more ambiguous (version)...The designation of what is a critical infrastructure system or network as far as I can tell has no specific process. There's no provision for any administrative process or review. That's where the problems seem to start. And then you have the amorphous powers that go along with it."
Translation: If your company is deemed "critical," a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, and when the government would exercise control over your computers or network.
The Internet Security Alliance's Clinton adds that his group is "supportive of increased federal involvement to enhance cyber security, but we believe that the wrong approach, as embodied in this bill as introduced, will be counterproductive both from an national economic and national secuity perspective."
Update at 3:14 p.m. PDT: I just talked to Jena Longo, deputy communications director for the Senate Commerce committee, on the phone. She sent me e-mail with this statement:
The president of the United States has always had the constitutional authority, and duty, to protect the American people and direct the national response to any emergency that threatens the security and safety of the United States. The Rockefeller-Snowe Cybersecurity bill makes it clear that the president's authority includes securing our national cyber infrastructure from attack. The section of the bill that addresses this issue, applies specifically to the national response to a severe attack or natural disaster. This particular legislative language is based on longstanding statutory authorities for wartime use of communications networks. To be very clear, the Rockefeller-Snowe bill will not empower a "government shutdown or takeover of the Internet" and any suggestion otherwise is misleading and false. The purpose of this language is to clarify how the president directs the public-private response to a crisis, secure our economy and safeguard our financial networks, protect the American people, their privacy and civil liberties, and coordinate the government's response.
Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for an on-the-record answer to these four questions that I asked her colleague on Wednesday. I'll let you know if and when I get a response.

You didn't exactly expand on what you said before, but oh well.
In the latest Iraqi election, how many of those women, now with the liberation of exercising such equal rights, actually used them? What proportion chose to stay in their homes, lest they risked the violence they would face, the violence fueled by anger at a Western presence?

*puts on full plate...wades in*
There are LOADS of reprehensible things going on in the world. There are philanthropists (private citizens) doing their level best to address such issues. Doctors without Borders...Bill and Melinda Gates...the man who thought of the micro loan...Bono...many others.
Have you ever heard the twist on an old expression, "You can lead a man* to enlightment, but you can't make him* think?"
IMO, the most critical aspect of improvement of humans as individuals and a species is the development of a high level of enlightened self-interest. My own personal interpretation of this is not socialism, but the idea that what affects one member of the tribe, affects all members of the tribe. This does not preclude rewards for achievement, etc, as socialism as applied in today's world often does.
One way to foster enlightened self-interest is through education. Not necessarily the pap fed to folks in public school, but a combination of book learning, "apprenticeship" in the school of hard knocks, and good mentors.
If the only source of education is extremely polarized politics, religion, what have you, an individual cannot achieve anything approaching "enlightenment", and their "tribe" is a severely-restricted faction of narrow minded, like-minded individuals. The best of us will see more similarities than differences in peoples of the world, regardless of politics, culture or religion.

Thank you for your excellent post smokey. I think "enlightened self intrest" is a perfect way to describe it. Many of the founding fathers described it that way in their writings.
Its the darn "enlightened" part that is so hard to come by today.... Especially when society is moving more away from certain standards of common decency. We could discuss opinions as to why this is, but I reckon it would get ugly. :)

You forgot "dude"!;)
I walked away from the machine and started to think....
Although philanthropy is a major way to deal with the "outside world", the people who do the dirty work-develop ideas and the means to help the common man- are generally overlooked.
I'll tout Dean Kamen again. He's behind some pretty nifty things - check out his generator/water purifier. You know what a Segway is, but how many people know about who developed a type of kidney dialysis machine and the stair climbing wheelchair?
I was watching a program, I want to say it was Glenn Beck- and he brought a group of people to some in and voice their opinions on the bailouts and economy.
He was taking questions from the audience when a young dude-;)- began to lament his not being able to find a job in his chosen field. He went on to say that he had just graduated from college and was upset that he was unemployed.
Um, I had to choke back a laugh and then stifle my ire afterwards. Going to school and having your nose stuck in a book for four years doesn't guarantee anything except the bills for the money they borrowed for school.
I am not trying to belittle any schooling or career development that anyone has undertaken to improve their standing in the work force-but I do have a problem with people that come into the work force with an attitude that their 'book lurnin'' makes them 'better' than me.
Yes, there is a critical balance of books, apprenticeship, mentors and Hard Knocks...But people are so wrapped up in the Fast Track Way to Success, they forget they really have to work to earn money.
I have worked with a few idiots with the 'Kilimanjaro School of Business and Plumbing" sheepskin on the wall-and I really wasn't impressed with their claim of having a diploma from an institute of higher learning in a frame..
Of course, there are the exceptions to that rule-I have worked with many people who did have a diploma and were willing to work their way up the ladder. It was the folks that came into the office and stated that "my" system wasn't the best, then told me that they were taught to think out of the box and reminded me that their degree made it impossible for them to present a business model that was without fault....
It was the disrespect that these moron show to their co-workers -that and the fact that some companies have put more emphasis on degrees, as opposed to common sense, loyalty and work ethic.
That's another reason for the sorry state of blue collar workers in the country today. Instead of asking for or promoting a good work/climb the ladder to success ethic?
We tell people that they should go to school, and skip the "get your fingers" dirty part of life that helps build good work habits, communication and interaction.

100 DAYS, 100 MISTAKES
April 25, 2009 --
100 PHOTOS OF OBAMA'S FIRST 100 DAYS
1. "Obama criticized pork barrel spending in the form of 'earmarks,' urging changes in the way that Congress adopts the spending proposals. Then he signed a spending bill that contains nearly 9,000 of them, some that members of his own staff shoved in last year when they were still members of Congress. 'Let there be no doubt, this piece of legislation must mark an end to the old way of doing business, and the beginning of a new era of responsibility and accountability,' Obama said." -- McClatchy, 3/11

7. In early February, the 2010 census was moved out of the Department of Commerce and into the White House, politicizing how federal aid is distributed and electoral districts are drawn.
8. Obama taps Nancy Killefer for a new administration job, First Chief Performance Officer -- to police government spending. But it surfaces that Killefer had performance issues of her own -- a tax lien was slapped on her DC home in 2005 for failure to pay unemployment compensation tax on household help. She withdrew.
9. Turkey tried to block the appointment of Anders Fogh Rasmussen as new NATO secretary general because he didn't properly punish the Danish cartoonist who caricatured Mohammed. France's Nicolas Sarkozy and Germany's Angela Merkel were outraged; Obama said he supported Turkey's induction into the European Union.
10. . . . and he never mentioned the Armenian genocide.
11. The picture of Obama and Hugo Chavez shaking hands.
12. Hugo Chavez gave him the anti-American screed "The Open Veins of Latin America." Obama didn't remark upon it. At least it wasn't DVDs.
13. Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega went on a 50-minute anti-American rant, calling Obama "president of an empire." Obama didn't leave the room. "I thought it was 50 minutes long. That's what I thought," he said.

15. "For months, the Obama administration and members of Congress have known that insurance giant AIG was getting ready to pay huge bonuses while living off government bailouts. It wasn't until the money was flowing and news was trickling out to the public that official Washington rose up in anger and vowed to yank the money back." -- Associated Press, 3/18
16. "After pushing Congress for weeks to hurry up and pass the massive $787 billion stimulus bill, President Obama promptly took off for a three-day holiday getaway." -- New York Post, 2/15
17. MEGHAN CLYNE ON: "I WON" AND THE DEATH OF BIPARTISANSHIP
"Obama soared to victory on the hopeful promise of a new era of bipartisanship. During his inaugural address he even promised an 'end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.'
"Too bad it took all of three days for the promise to ring hollow.
"Start with Obama's big meeting with top congressional leaders on his signature legislation -- the stimulus -- on the Friday after his inauguration. Listening to Republican concerns about overspending was a nice gesture -- until he shut down any hopes of real dialogue by crassly telling Republican leaders: 'I won.' Even the White House's leaking of the comment was a slap at the Republican leadership, who'd expected Obama to adhere to the custom of keeping private meetings with congressional leadership, well, private.
"It's only gone downhill from there. The stimulus included zero Republican recommendations, and failed to get a single House Republican vote.
"It's not just the tactic of using Republicans for bipartisan photo-ops, and then cutting them loose before partisan decisions, that irks Obama's opponents. The new president wasted no time rushing forward with policies and legislation guaranteed to drive Republicans nuts. The first bill he signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act -- a partisan hot-button that drew all of eight Republican supporters in the entire Congress. Then there was the swift reversal of Bush policies on abortion and embryonic-stem-cell research -- issues dear to the Republican base.
"And when Obama and the Democrats in Congress took up SCHIP -- the children's health-insurance bill that Republicans say vastly expands government's role in health care -- they had an easy chance for real bipartisanship. After all, the bill had been hashed out in the previous Congress, and a bipartisan accord was reached before President Bush responded with a veto. Did the Obama team push for the compromise version in the 111th Congress? Nope. They went back to the drawing board, ramming through the Democrats' dream version.
"Of course, the lack of bipartisanship isn't limited to Capitol Hill. Obama has taken gratuitous swipes at the Republicans who recently decamped Washington, blaming President Bush for everything from the economy and the war to the lack of sufficient puppies and rainbows. And who could forget the Rush Limbaugh flap -- in which Obama's top advisers, including chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, orchestrated a public relations campaign meant to undermine the Republican National Committee chairman, Michael Steele, by framing talk-radio personality Limbaugh as the real head of the Republican Party.
"For now, Obama's back-pedal on the bipartisanship promise just makes him look insincere. But the real consequences of the mistake will be felt soon enough. As Presidents Bush and Clinton could tell him, congressional majorities do change -- and at some point, Obama will need Republicans on his side. He'd be smart to spend his second 100 days making up for the serious snubs of his first."
-- Meghan Clyne is a DC-based writer.
18. "The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today." -- Department of Homeland Security intelligence report

20. "Yes, Canada is not Mexico, it doesn't have a drug war going on. There are real issues there." -- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The 9/11 hijackers did not come across the Canada border
21. "The Obama administration is signaling to Congress that the president could support taxing some employee health benefits, as several influential lawmakers and many economists favor, to help pay for overhauling the health care system. The proposal is politically problematic for President Obama, however, since it is similar to one he denounced in the presidential campaign as 'the largest middle-class tax increase in history.' " -- New York Times, 3/14
22. JOE SCARBOROUGH ON: PROMOTING FEAR
"During his historic inaugural speech, Barack Obama promised to usher in a transformational age where hope would replace fear, unity would overtake partisanship, and change would sweep aside the status quo. But early in President Obama's first 100 days it is obvious that the only thing that is changing is the Candidate of Change, himself.
"The same politician who proclaimed during his inauguration that 'on this day we have chosen hope over fear' soon warned Americans that the US economy would be forever destroyed if the stimulus bill was voted down.
"Why was it that same man who promised to put Americans' interests ahead of his own political ambitions chose instead to use the suffering of citizens to advance his agenda?
"Maybe he was following the guidance of Rahm Emanuel, who famously said, 'You never want to waste a good crisis.'
"They didn't.
"The White House's warnings were so over-the-top that Bill Clinton felt compelled to warn the new president against making such grim pronouncements. Americans would quickly warn that the White House would not channel FDR's eternal optimism but rather embrace the gloomy worldview of Edgar Allen Poe.
"The Candidate of Hope also quickly adopted the Nixonian worldview that Americans voted their fears rather than their hopes. Over Mr. Obama's first 100 days, that cynical calculation paid off politically for a White House that seemed most interested in appeasing the most liberal members of his Democratic Party.
"I expected more from Barack Obama. For the sake of my country, I hope I get it from the new president over the next 100 days."

25. Only 28% think the Obama administration should do any further investigating of how the Bush administration treated terrorism suspects.
26. "Obama thanked CIA employees for their work and said they're invaluable to national security. He explained his decision to release the memos, then told everyone not to feel bad because he was now acknowledging potential mistakes. Theirs, not his. 'That's how we learn,' Obama said, as though soothing a room full of fourth-graders." -- The Oklahoman, 4/23
27. By releasing the torture memos, Obama opened American citizens up to international tribunals. A UN lawyer said the US is obliged to prosecute lawyers who drafted the memos or else violate the Geneva Conventions.
28. In their first meeting, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave Obama a carved ornamental penholder from the timbers of the anti-slavery ship HMS Gannet. Obama gave him 25 DVDs that don't work in Europe.
29. TIM CARNEY ON: PICKING BILL RICHARDSON AS SECRETARY OF COMMERCE
"Richardson's value in Obama's Cabinet had everything to do with appearances. First, he was the Hispanic pick. Second, because Richardson had run against Obama for President, tapping him for the Cabinet helped the media write the Obama-Lincoln comparisons by burnishing the 'Team of Rivals' image.
"But Richardson withdrew before Obama was even inaugurated when news came out about a criminal investigation involving David Rubin, president of a firm named Chambers, Dunhill, Rubin & Co. (although there was no Chambers or Dunhill), who had donated at least $110,000 to Richardson's campaign committees and had also profited from $1.5 million in contracts from the state government.
"This was an early warning sign about Obama's vetting process (various tax problems and the Daschle problem would reveal this as a theme), but picking Richardson to run Commerce also highlighted that Obama and Richardson's promise of 'public-private partnerships' -- such as Detroit bailouts, Wall Street bailouts, and green energy--was an open door for corruption and was at odds with Obama's promise to diminish the influence of lobbyists.
"The Richardson mistake was one of Obama's first, and it was emblematic. Richardson embodied Obama's attention to self-image and the problems inherent in his vision of an intimate business-government connection."

36. "We have begun to modernize 75% of all federal building space, which has the potential to reduce long-term energy costs by billions of dollars on behalf of taxpayers. We are providing grants to states to help weatherize hundreds of thousands of homes, which will save the families that benefit about $350 each year. That's like a $350 tax cut." -- Obama, describing something that doesn't cut taxes.

38. Backtracking on a campaign promise he made to black farmers, Obama significantly lowered the amount of money they could claim in a discrimination settlement against the Agricultural Department. "I can't figure out for the life of me why the president wouldn't want to implement a bill that he fought for as a US senator," said John Boyd, head of the National Black Farmers Association.

"Europe should not simply expect the United States to shoulder that burden alone," he said. "This is a joint problem it requires a joint effort." Only the UK offered substantial help, most others refused.
48. "While the online question portion of the White House town hall was open to any member of the public with an Internet connection, the five fully identified questioners called on randomly by the president in the East Room were anything but a diverse lot. 51. DANA PERINO ON: REMAINING IN CAMPAIGN MODE
"Has it really only been 100 days? In many ways it feels like a lot longer.
"That's partly because the new administration remains in campaign mode most of the time. Now that's not in itself a bad thing if you can do that and accomplish your agenda. But what's happened is that a popular new president has laid out a very bold agenda in the midst of an economic crisis, and I don't think Congress is going to get a lot of work done on those big ticket items this year. They'll eke out a couple of small wins on issues like healthcare and maybe energy, but the Democrats will hail them as big victories. The Republicans have been working like a cohesive and loyal opposition party, and they need to continue to outline positive new ideas like the recent one to help grow American's savings.
"The early stumbles on the administration's high profile nominations -- Daschle and Richardson for just to examples -- acted like weights around their ankles. In addition, the partisan shots from the White House were unbecoming and I don't think we'll see more of that. Our allies and our enemies -- heck, even we ourselves -- are trying to understand the new foreign policy direction, which in some ways seems to be change just for the sake of change. The next moves by the leaders of other countries -- like Iran, North Korea and Venezuela -- probably will prove that really not much will change just because America has a new president.
"In many ways, it's the next 100 days that will tell us more about our new president and what he'll be able to accomplish than we can forecast based on the first 100 days."

67. Obama quietly announced that he would not press for new labor and environmental regulations in the North American Free Trade Agreement, going back on a campaign promise.
68. NICOLE GELINAS ON: MISSPENT STIMULUS
"One of Obama's most poignant missed opportunities was in not using the historic $787 million stimulus package to reorder state and local government's spending priorities. As states and cities continue to spend ceaselessly and without results on education and healthcare, they're crowding out investments in the physical infrastructure that the private sector needs to rebuild the economy.
"In the stimulus, of the more than $200 billion that went directly to states and cities, nearly 70% went to education and healthcare spending. Only 24% went to infrastructure spending.
"But the states and cities in the most trouble already spend way too much on education and healthcare, pushing taxes up and sending private industry away. They don't spend nearly enough on infrastructure, which attracts the private sector and builds the real economy.
"As David Walker, former comptroller general of the US, said at the Regional Plan Association's annual meeting a week ago, nationwide, we are the 'highest in the world' on education. We are 'the highest in the world' on healthcare. 'Nobody comes even close.' On infrastructure, by contrast, we are 'below average' in both critical new investments and in much-needed maintenance spending.
"And, as Democratic governor of Pennsylvania Ed Rendell said at the same conference, when President Dwight Eisenhower left office, infrastructure spending was about 12.5% of non-military domestic spending. Today, it's about 2.5%.
"This shortfall is obvious to anyone who's ridden on an "express train" to the outer boroughs or driven on the Cross Bronx Expressway recently. But in New York, as elsewhere, the stimulus money has just allowed the state to ramp up spending on its wasteful, inhumane Medicaid program and its nosebleed public-school spending.
"Meanwhile, the subways are about to crumble into oblivion -- taking the economy with them. The same is true of decaying infrastructure in California and in aging states across the nation.
"The stimulus was a once-in-a-generation chance to change this. Instead, it made the situation worse."
-- Nicole Gelinas is a contributing editor to City Journal

Jackson, the 1986 Supreme Court decision that held that if police may not interrogate a defendant after the right to counsel has attached, if the defendant has a lawyer or has requested a lawyer. 75. RALPH PETERS ON: FUMBLING IN AFGHANISTAN, FAKING IT IN PAKISTAN
"We're squandering blood and treasure in Afghanistan. Instead of concentrating fiercely on the vital task of destroying al Qaeda and its friends, the Obama administration's determined to erect a modern nation where no nation exists. Afghanistan isn't a country. It's a dysfunctional reservation inhabited by tribes that hate each other. There's no 'Afghan' identity. And even if our blind-to-reality efforts succeeded perfectly, the result would be meaningless.
"Except as a target range where we can gun down terrorists, Afghanistan doesn't matter. Next door, Pakistan matters immensely. But we don't know what to do about it. With 170 million anti-American Muslims descending into chaos as Pashtuns, Baluchis, Punjabis, Sindhis and others claw each other over the country's shabby remains, Pakistan's corrupt president shrugs, its military cowers, its loathsome intelligence services collude with Islamist extremists, and the safety of its nuclear weapons grows doubtful.
"Pakistan may be this generation's chamber of horrors.
"The Obama administration's response? Drill more wells in the Afghan countryside. Dramatically reinforce our troops in Afghanistan, sticking them with an impossible mission of modernizing a pre-medieval landscape while exposing them at the end of an insecure 1,500-mile supply line through, of all places, Pakistan.
"As for Pakistan itself, the Obama administration wants to send billions of dollars to a thieving government that makes Nigeria's look like a Quaker meeting and to hand Pakistan's military more arms -- weapons that might soon be used against us.
"Pakistan was a bad idea when it was created in 1947. It's a worse one now. Afghanistan wasn't even an idea, just an accident of where other borders ended. We can't 'save' either one -- because neither wants to be saved on our terms.
"Obama said the right things -- that Afghanistan isn't Iraq and that our goal should be the destruction of al Qaeda. But his policies just regurgitate our Iraq strategy (one he opposed) in a profoundly different context, while ambitious generals echo Vietnam-era calls for more forces.
"Our troops will do whatever we ask, to the best of their magnificent abilities. But we should ask them to do things that make sense. We need creative strategic thought, but we're succumbing to sheer inertia. And the presidet's supporters who howled that we should abandon Iraq to concentrate on their candidate's 'good war' don't seem to be volunteering to do any fighting. Menwhle, our presient's trpped himself inside his own campaign promiseing, Vietnam!"
-- Ralph Peters is the author of "Looking for Trouble: Adventures in a BeW" 77. "President Obama failed to consult Congress, as promised, before carving out exceptions to the omnibus spending bill he signed into law -- breaking his own signing-statement rules two days after issuing them -- and raised questions among lawmakers and committees who say the president's objections are unclear at best and a power grab at worst." -- Washington Times, 3/24
78. Adolfo Carrion was confirmed as Director of White House Office of Urban Affairs, but is serving under a cloud after allegations that he accepted thousands of dollars in cash from developers whose projects he approved.
79. KYLE SMITH ON: GOING AFTER RUSH LIMBAUGH
"Every so often an unfocused athlete forgets about the field of play and climbs into the stands. Ty Cobb did it. Ron Artest did it. Maybe no one did it with more sick flir than the greasy, furious Hanson Brothers who, in 'Slap Shot,' climbed into the stands to give a beatdown to a fan.
"In March, Barack Obama sent his own personal Hanson Brothers, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and spokesman Robert Gibbs, out to attack a non-politician -- Rush Limbaugh -- who was sitting innocently in the stands jeering the action. Limbaugh didn't even throw a cup of beer.
"Senior White House staffers, who have already fallen into the classic trap of paying more attention to polls than fixing the country's problems, had become obsessed with surveys showing that Limbaugh was an unpopular figure with swing voters. Pretty soon Emanuel and Gibbs developed Limbaugh Tourette's. To paraphrase Joe Biden's witty putdown of Rudy Giuliani, for a few days every sentence they uttered contained three things: a subject, a verb and Rush Limbaugh.
"El Rushbo, chuckling over his cigar as his ratings skyrocketed, could not have been more pleased if a picture had emerged of Obama wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt and burning the American flag on Harvard Square. Even that portion of the public that doesn't like Rush squirmed at the embarrassing spectacle of the president's men going all Mean Girls on an entertainer. George W. Bush's spokesmen maintained a dignified silence about Michael Moore. Picture them fanning out over the Sunday talk shows to denounce, and drive up the box-office receipts of, 'Fahrenheit 9/11.' Wouldn't you have loved that, Michael?"

81. "More than 90% of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States," Obama said in Mexico, yet factcheck.org says, "The figure represents only the percentage of crime guns that have been submitted by Mexican officials and traced by U.S. officials. We can find no hard data on the total number of guns actually 'recovered in Mexico,' but US and Mexican officials both say that Mexico recovers more guns that it submits for tracing. Therefore, the percentage of guns 'recovered' and traced to US sources necessarily is less than 90%."
82. Obama: "[Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc.], said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off." Jim Owens: "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again."
83. "In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive." -- Obama in Strasbourg, France

87. "There are more than 6.5 million trucks in the United States. The program Congress terminated allowed 97 Mexican trucks to roam among them. Ninety-seven! Shutting them out not only undermines NAFTA. It caused Mexico to retaliate with tariffs on 90 goods affecting $2.4 billion in U.S. trade coming out of 40 states." -- Charles Krauthammer, 3/20
88. DAVID M. DRUCKER ON: BOWING TO CONGRESS
"Although the president possesses enormous political capital -- both because of high approval ratings and because his administration is still in its infancy -- he has generally declined to exercise it with Democratic leaders in the House and Senate, including when it comes to crafting legislation key to moving his agenda forward.
"Rather he has allowed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) to craft legislation as they see fit -- even though the very bills in question were proposed by the president and involve key planks in his agenda. Among them were Obama's signature $787 billion economic stimulus bill, his first major piece of legislation that was signed into law in February; and now health care reform, currently being negotiated on Capitol Hill with minimal input from the White House.
"This soft-pedal style of leadership runs the risk of forcing Obama to embrace legislation constructed for narrow partisan interests rather than in a manner capable of garnering broad bipartisan support. Over time, the public might come to see Obama's deference to Pelosi and Reid as a weakness of leadership not befitting a president in tough times."
-- David M. Drucker is a staff writer for Roll Call
89. "It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census, there are irresolvable conflicts for me." -- Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), who became the second failed Commerce Secretary nominee

96. The Obama Administration is trying to scuttle a lawsuit filed in federal court against Iran by former US embassy hostages. The lawsuit alleges that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was one of the hostage-takers who interrogated the captives.
97. GLENN BECK ON: BAD ECONOMIC PREDICTIONS
"Ten days before his inauguration, the President's chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, Christina Rohmer, released a report describing what to expect economically during the first 100 days and beyond. It presented two starkly different scenarios: one good (if the stimulus were to be passed), and one terrifyingly bad (if we did nothing). Amazingly, the report estimated that if the stimulus package were to pass, the unemployment rate would not go above 8% at any time until at least 2014.
"It's already at 8.5%.
"In fact, while there is an acknowledged level of uncertainty, the projections estimated that the unemployment rate would be lower today if we had done nothing at all. This suggests one of two things: either the administration misjudged the seriousness of our economic problems, or the stimulus plan is actually making things worse. I suspect it's a little of both.
"Remember, when the President's budget was released, he was roundly criticized for his never ending deficits, even under his own optimistic scenarios for growth. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected deficits that were even uglier. But, if the President and his economic planners were this far off, this soon, how much worse does the future look now?
"The election was supposed to bring 'change,' but I was hoping for more than the letter after the President's name, the positivity of the media coverage, and the hypoallergenic qualities of the White House puppy. President Obama didn't get us into this situation, but so far he's doubling down on the same spending philosophy that did. Common sense tells us that new debt is not the cure for old debt. No matter what the slogans say, that won't change in 100 days or 100 years."

Puckstop, Yes, almost all politicians are human beings who care about the society in which they live and chose to work, making that society better. They represent the people who elect them!

Reading that quote reminded me of a politician (I think he was a conservative MP) that I saw in a television interview some time ago. He said nearly the exact same thing.... some weeks later the country was outraged when we learnt that a good proportion of Parliament was squandering the tax-payer's money on mortgages, moats and floating duck houses (!) for their second homes. :p
I have been lucky enough to sit on on lectures with a few politicians, and don't get me wrong, I respect them, but each one, perhaps bar one, has made horrendous errors of judgement in their history that did nothing for the community or the greater good of anybody.
I think I might be agreeing with Puckstop on this one! :p

As someone pointed out to me when I was complaining about some politicians once...have you ever run for office?
So those who are carping...calling all or almost all politicians evil or morons or thieves...
Have you run for office? Have you worked on the campaign of someone you think would be better?
Or is it easier to curse the darkness than to light a candle?
I don't believe all are anything. Just as people who go into the military do it to make the world a safer place, I think most politicians run for office because they want to make the government better.
As we all know those Founding Fathers were also politicians!
Do some politicians go bad? Sure. Do some in the military go bad? Sure. Heck, so do some teachers, lawyers, doctors, business people, athletes, etc. etc, etc.
I just have never like labeling ALL of anything good or evil.

Have you run for office?
No.
Have you worked on the campaign of someone you think would be better?
Yes. And it was the first of a series of experiences that taught me what our modern politician is all about.
I might begin believing in the people who serve in government again.... When that "service" becomes a sacrifice again. The founders understood that SERVICE was a sacrifice, and a noble one. Today, it seems a way to live a fat life and spend OPM. (Other Peoples Money, to coin the 'fine' State Senator from PA, Vince Fumo, who is currently incarcerated.)
As we all know those Founding Fathers were also politicians!
Indeed. But those men had something that very, very few today do. A sense of honor and integrity. They understood that they served something MUCH bigger than themselves. That they were part of a necessary evil, not the solution to all our woes.
They pledged their LIVES, their FORTUNES and their SACRED HONOR. What does our modern version risk?

Lifetime political "service" may be part of the problem. The lifers realize how cushy of a job they have. They don't need to work for a living, so there is no incentive. IMO, there should be term limits all the way from dog catcher to POTUS. NYC imposed term limits, now Bloomberg wants to beat the system. Say what you want to about Giuliani; folks wanted him to run for a third term after 9/11 but he said it wasn't allowed by law and declined.
I didn't intend any slight to small acts of kindness by mentioning philanthropy; large scale philanthropy just has much more global reach. However, the man that got the Peace Prize for creating the concept of micro-loans also started small. (These have a repayment rate the envy of any big bank: well north of 90%.) There is another person who is arranging with Kenya, that if a village/town will plant 100 trees they will get a new laptop for their school. These types of activities are definitely quid pro quo; as they should be. No one should get something for nothing.
I think more emphasis is being put on "locals" who do good deeds, and that can be an incentive to others. This is also mandated in many faiths.

Gotcha,
One of the 'peeves' that DK has with his Stirling Engined purifiers and generators? It's great tech and he wants to make it available to the poorer areas of Africa. He wants the gov't. of countries to buy the units for their people, but, as in all AH backward 'governments' they want if for free. As with the monies that GWB pledged for the AIDs programs, isn't it easier to grab cash that's given away?;)
I don't know enough about B and M Gates philanthropy other that it's got a lot of zeroes behind a prime number?;) It's good to see money pledged to good causes.
I love to see the inventions/medicine and tech breakthroughs that help the masses. Having 'seen' the some of the advances in surgeries for years, it's exciting to know that someone is working on the problems in HC.
-------------------
Here's a tidbit that effing floored me when I heard it yesterday.
Howard Dean, when asked about the HCR bill did not include tort reform answered,
"We didn't want to take on the laywers."
That should answer the question we all have been asking about why are med care prices so high?
So,
The base root of why we are totally screwed with the costs of HC in the country will be left to their own devices....
And the Dems have the effing nerve to claim that the Repubs walked away from the table?
There was nothing being served that was worth waiting for. The pomposity and inability of everyone to get a grip on what is really happening in HC is downright scary.
Heaven forbid any politico's loved one gets ill and needs any treatment. Only then can we expect any kind of movement on that particular front.
I wonder if there is an outbreak of hemorrhoids in the congress and senate-seems like we are being forced to endure loads of BS from most of the people in those offices.

I think term limits is an interesting concept but there are downsides. From a human capital management perspective - does this go for all position paid with tax dollars? How long is the learning curve? If the "term" ends just as the incumbent has fully mastered the job - what's the benefit? What is the ability of the organization to attract the quality they need with term limits?

The MSM showed a large portion of women voters in Iraq. Its possible alot were stoned after the elections. What about the decades of violence the Iraqi people lived under during Sadam's rule?

Almost ALL politicians are the same.
The Kennedy Dynasty=good. The Bush Dynasty=bad. If Hillary ever gets to be POTUS, Clinton Dynasty=good.
So you have to run for office to complain? You cant carp when the loonies are running the loony bin? Flamethrowers do tend to fix alot of problems.
I don't believe all are anything. Just as people who go into the military do it to make the world a safer place, I think most politicians run for office because they want to make the government better.
Making the world a better place is far different and a nobler ideal then making the government better.
As we all know those Founding Fathers were also politicians!
The Founding Fathers actually went out and fought for what they believed in, they didnt go out and spend years raising money to get ellected.
Do some politicians go bad? Sure. Do some in the military go bad? Sure. Heck, so do some teachers, lawyers, doctors, business people, athletes, etc. etc, etc.

Term limits would simplify the political process. Bills wouldnt languish in committees for years, things might actually get done for the actual good of the people, and not for the greater good, of the greater good of the greater good.
The longer politicians are in office the greater they complicate things. T Kennedy and whether or not his seat should be filled by appointment or by special ellection is a good example of complicating the political process.

God is perfect. Mankind is far from it. Thus, due to our sinful nature, we rarely adhere to His Commandments. That does not mean we should not try.
Now, I know what you might want to say.... But I also believe God wants us to adhere to his Commandments by free choice.
I am ashamed for and embarrassed by people who think that a message to stay in school, work hard, take responsibility for your education espouses socialism.
Oh, if it that was the only message... But, as usual, you seem to omit the necessary context. Recall the original version of his idea, per the letter Arne Duncan had sent to schools, had in part a request to "write papers where the students could come up with ideas on how to help the President."
THAT is typical "progressive" indoctrination.
I guess by that measure, when Bush II read a book about a goat to school children he was espousing beastiality.:rolleyes:

There's a difference between asking for people to be "social" and forcing people to do it.
As PS alluded to in his posts.
We are not all perfect, we do what we can, the best as we can while living. The sin is in believing that someone is perfect and never having the huevos to look 'into' the person who tells you they are perfect.
I wonder how the prez would do if he had to confront all the lies and other BS that surrounds him??
Like going to church and being unconcious for 15-20 years?
Like dodging questions about sumbag friends?
Or lying to the public by promising all kinds of good crap then backing down.
(here you can pretty much blame all politicians-but uneasy is the head that wears the crown?)

What about the FW Chucky Rangel, and the Green Job Czar- both those FAs talk their racist BS - when they feel the heat of people figuring out what sumbags, liars and DBs they are, they fall back on the favorite lines that blame everything on people who are lighter in skin than they are.
A fave talk show host used to say, We are all black on the inside.
Possibly the worst sin that people have committed is to fall under the spell of the false prophet they elected to office.

Ok, now I really don't understand. If there are people whose opinion doesn't matter to you, how can you be embarrassed then? For ex.: if my child behaved badly in public, I couldn't be embarrassed for him, that's impossible and he's obviously not embarrassed or he'd discontinue the behavior. I could only be embarrassed for myself in the presence of others because of my apparent lack of disciplinary skills. If no one was there to observe my child's obnoxious behavior, I couldn't be embarrassed. So when you say that you're embarrassed, who is it exactly that is embarrassing you? You say that you don't like name calling; I don't like it either. You say that you're disgusted by it; so am I. However, I'm not embarrassed because I don't name call. Disgusted, absolutely. Embarrassed, impossible. And to whom are you apologizing?

This is what I posted in another thread:
People should be able to disagree w/Obama and to protest and/or keep their kids home from school that day w/out being villified. He should address school kids if he so desires as other presidents before him have done. However, "Teachers are also given guidance to tell students to "build background knowledge about the president of the United States by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama."" This is unnecessary. If he wants to do a PSA, sure, why not? To "give teachers guidance" is out of his realm and he should stay out.

Yes, it does help but I guess I should be more succinct. In this case the people who are criticizing Obama's speaking to the classrooms believe that their conduct is none other than just and right. They aren't behaving badly but are merely exercising their right of free speech and are taking responsibility for their children's education. Yes, it does help but I guess I should be more succinct. In this case the people who are criticizing Obama's speaking to the classrooms believe that their conduct is none other than just and right. They aren't behaving badly but are merely exercising their right of free speech and are taking responsibility for their children's education. They are doing nothing for which to be embarrassed and you cannot be embarrassed for someone else. In whose eyes are you embarrassed and to whom are you apologizing, please?
Medusa - feel free to twist my words and meaning around all you want. That does seem to be a sport of some people on PetTalk. You know and I know that we disagree on this subject.
You see just and right - I see petty and mean spirited.
I see calling the president of the United States a socialist to be narrow minded and uneducated.
And please, do not tell me what I am allowed to feel and what I am not.
For the last time...I am embarrassed by the conduct of some of my fellow countrymen and I do not need your permission to feel that way.

It isn't the name calling of politicians that I object to as much as I object to people on PT and those who disagree w/them and/or politicians that get called fools, morons, etc. We can disagree w/out being villified, can't we? This constant back and forth picking at each other's grammar, spelling, etc. is childish and tedious and it makes visiting the DH an unpleasant experience when it could be one of mutual learning and an exchange of ideas.

So where is this thread going and what purpose does it serve anymore? All I see happening, is barbs being tossed, people getting pissed off, some valued members leaving the forum - and for what????
Frankly, and for what my opinion is worth, I would like to see political "debates and discussions", banned from PT. It seems no matter how civil these threads start out to be, they just go down the drain in no time at all. It's a shame that as adults, we can't set a better example for the younger members - and non members also - who are free to read all the mean-spirited things that transpire here. Quite the message that is going out for all the world to see, isn't it? :(
Last night before I logged off, I emailed a friend, and said I had my fill of PT nonsense for the day, and I was going to watch something soothing and relaxing on t.v. - like wild animals tearing each other apart on Animal Planet. It seems yesterday (and today) have been extra vicious here - those Animal Planet shows seem calm in comparision.

LOL, speaking as a younger member, it seems I must have been affected by threads like these, and look what's become of me. :p
Where there's politics, there's arguement. It's no surprise. Sometimes I take parts of this thread with a pinch of salt, but I do appreciate it's existence for the purpose of comparing different political systems, and I would be quite disappointed if threads like this were to become banned. Obama's 'green jobs' adviser Van Jones resigns amid controversy over past statements
By WILL LESTER
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's adviser Van Jones has resigned amid controversy over past inflammatory statements, the White House said early Sunday.
Jones, an administration official specializing in environmentally friendly "green jobs" with the White House Council on Environmental Quality was linked to efforts suggesting a government role in the 2001 terror attacks and to derogatory comments about Republicans.
The resignation comes as Obama is working to regain his footing in the contentious health care debate.
Jones issued an apology on Thursday for his past statements. When asked the next day whether Obama still had confidence in him, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said only that Jones "continues to work in the administration."
The matter surfaced after news reports of a derogatory comment Jones made in the past about Republicans, and separately, of Jones' name appearing on a petition connected to the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. That 2004 petition had asked for congressional hearings and other investigations into whether high-level government officials had allowed the attacks to occur.
"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in his resignation statement. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."
Jones said he has been "inundated with calls from across the political spectrum urging me to stay and fight."
But he said he cannot in good conscience ask his colleagues to spend time and energy defending or explaining his past.
Jones flatly said in an earlier statement that he did not agree with the petition's stand on the 9/11 attacks and that "it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever."
As for his other comments he made before joining Obama's team, Jones said, "If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize."
Despite his apologies, Republicans demanded Jones quit.
Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana said in a statement, "His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate." Missouri Sen. Christopher Bonds said Congress should investigate Jones's fitness the job.
Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck repeatedly denounced Jones after a group the adviser co-founded, ColorofChange.org, led an advertising boycott against Beck's show to protest his claim that Obama is a racist.
James Rucker, the organization's executive director, has said Jones had nothing to do with ColorofChange.org now and didn't even know about the campaign before it started.
Jones, well-known in the environmental movement, was a civil-rights activist in California before shifting his attention to environmental and energy issues. He is known for laying out a broad vision of a green economy.
Nancy Sutley chair of the council, said in a statement released early Sunday that she accepts Jones resignation and thanked him for his service.
"Over the last six months, he had been a strong voice for creating jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources," she said. "We appreciate his hard work and wish him the best moving forward."

How nasty has the political discourse in Washington gotten? During his speech to Congress tonight, President Obama defended his health care plan, saying that he had never proposed providing coverage to illegal immigrants. “You lie!” shouted Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, prompting Obama to briefly pause in the delivery of his speech and eye his heckler. No doubt emotions are often heated during these joint sessions with the president and members of Congress, but decorum typically rules—except for tonight, apparently. In an interview with CNN afterwards, Sen. John McCain trashed Wilson’s heckling and urged him to apologize. “Totally disrespectful,” McCain said. So far, no comment from Wilson or his congressional office.
One thing is for sure: Wilson’s outburst didn’t do the GOP any favors tonight, particularly against a backdrop of a speech in which Obama went after his critics to either put up or shut up on health care reform. It completely overshadowed the official Republican response to Obama’s speech. Rep. Charles Boustany, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Louisiana, urged Obama to scrap the current bill and start anew with true bipartisan negotiations. “We agree much needs to be done to lower the cost of health care for all Americans. On that goal, Republicans are ready — and we've been ready — to work with the President for common-sense reforms that our nation can afford,” he said.
more -
By 10:30 p.m., Wilson had apologized.
"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," Wilson said. "While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."
I bet Rep. Joe Wilson gets re-elected by a large margin, he shouldnt have apologized.
THe look of shock on Nutzies face was priceless!

I won't let my 4 or 8 year old children behave in that manner.
For a supposed adult to act like that in a joint session of congress is beyond the pale.
Rep. Wilson wasn't the only member acting like a buffoon, the Rep. from Tx with a sign around his neck, various reps. waving papers around....
It's Congress, not a damned circus.
If the Republicans continue to behave like children, then they deserve ridicule and scorn, not respect. While the leadership of the House has been less than desireable, it doesn't justify their actions.

About the "illegals won't get HC" comment?
My opinion does not matter-here is the reality.
The Dems do not want to have to be I.D'ed for anything.....What will their stand be when they have to produce a insurance card or ID to gte care?
THAT would be the only way to insure the care goes to legal citizens in the country. (we could do microchips or forearm tattoos, that's still to be seen.)
If HC is pulled from the IAs, does BO take the chance of alienating the "Young Hispanic Voting Bloc" who have family members here illegally and have been given HC for years?
What about the people, knowing that they will be turned away from ERs/Med Centers because the are IA's? They then will only go to be seen when their condition is critical and we will have no choice but to treat them. We'll assume the cost of their care at a higher rate because they waited until they were almost dead?
What are the issues that will come up when the legal sys begins to take on clients whose loved ones died/or became sicker because the were denied/afraid/waited too long to get medical health?

Find me video of a speech to Congress where the party leaders of the POTUS's party don't do that.
Ild find it abhorrent for any POTUS or House of Congress to pull this kind circus act.
When you go to a play and the the curtain is suposed to go up at 8:00, wouldnt you be irked if the curtain didnt go up until 8:10? Before the curtain went up wouldnt you be irked if the stage hands came out and announced they were escorting the prima donna into the theater?

So....
It's okay to exercise your First amendment rights by shouting over someone who is exercising theirs? Yep, great way to debate and solve problems.
Responsibility goes hand in hand with the rights enumerated in the Constitution.
The Representatives have handed the Democrats perfect examples of Republican behavior which they'd be foolish not to use in a campaign. It's always a bad concept to hand the opposition ammunition.
Note to the Republicans.....when you find yourself in a hole, put down the shovel.
The Representatives have the House floor open to them to speak as they wish daily for one minute speeches. Should the Representative wish to do so, he could use that time to speak his peace.
Interrupting a speech is petty and childish.
You complain about the President arriving 10 minutes late, but it's okay for someone to cause further delay and attempt to turn the speech into a circus?
Nice double standard.
Note to the Dems, dont bother with the shovel just get some union goons to do the heavy lifting for you. Heck beat people up while your at it.
Francis, the Dems have been shouting people down for decades, somehow its now in bad taste?

Nice broad brush. As a union officer, I guess I'm a "union goon".
Shouting people down is never in good taste. It's churlish behavior which has no place in a debate about an issue that's this important to the people of the US.
Bad behavior doesn't justify bad behavior. So the POTUS was late. Not the first time it has happened, not the first President who has committed the faux pas, and I doubt it will be the last.

I'll give him those 10 minutes. Mr President spent 3 hrs in NY that morning, attending a memorial for Walter Cronkite.
I wonder how many other big wigs would have even made an appearance there, let alone stay for the duration, if faced with the prep and rehearsal that was needed for last night's address??

I'm not Democrat or Republican, but I was truly shocked at the behavior of some of the Republicans last night - waving petitions (or whatever they were holding), being verbally rude, texting on their Blackberry or cell). I frankly don't recall the Dem's booing Bush, but I'm sure they did, and I find that just as appalling.

I read that Wilson's son (Alan) had announced his intention to run for SC, AJ
before his father's tantrum last night. Now folks are wondering if the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. He sure didn't do his son any favors.
Ive seen and heard alot of support for Mr Wilson today, online and while driving around today. The MSM isnt going to put anything positive about him on the air, if it had been Bush speaking, we would have had a glowing biography about Mr Wilson today.
As I see it somebody had to say it. If Mr Wilson had held his tongue, and waited to hold a press conference, nobody would have even cared and the press would have buried it if they even covered it.
As for the POTUS being 10 minutes late. Werent we promised a streamlined .gov? IIRC the movements of the POTUS are typically well planned out and schedualed to the minute. I missed his speech to the nations students but I am assuming he was on time for that? The grandstanding last night, or any night regardless of who it is, was abhorrent. THey work for us and at our leisure.
I know there are those who will swing from Obama's jangly bits no matter what he says or does, but how much did that 10 minute delay or the 10 minutes before 2000 when I tuned into the online stream cost us taxpayers? That was about the cleanest and fastest live streaming video I have seen.

How could it have cost anything? The airtime is at the discretion of the networks, it's not paid for by the government.

Main Entry: sous
Pronunciation: \ˈsü\
Function: adjective
Etymology: French, preposition, literally, under, from Old French suz, from Latin subtus, adverb, below, under; akin to Latin sub under — more at up
Date: 1687
: being an assistant —used chiefly in titles <a sous-chef>

whitehouse.gov costs the salaries of the people who run it. (fixed cost, doesn't matter what they put there)
The bandwidth is purchased on an annual contract basis.
My humble apologies for putting an extra 's' on the word sou.....
It is an old french coin, which was essentially worthless.
OK so whitehouse .gov does cost tax payers money.
The live .gov stream for 09/09/09 speech was one of the best Ive seen, little lag, good quality A/V, and allmost no buffering. So if .gov has allready paid for a contract for that type of bandwidth, with tax payer money, I feel we should see alot more bang for our buck from whitehouse.gov. Maybe a 24/7 feeds from both the POTUS and the Congressional branch. Heck lets have a live feed from the SCOTUS when they are in session. If its under contract we shouldnt be wasting money by not using the bandwidth.

Democrats say South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress is turning into a financial boon for his opponent, Rob Miller.
Miller is a former Marine and Iraq war veteran who resigned his commission to run for Congress. His campaign last year presented Wilson with the most serious challenge he’d had since winning a special election in 2001. Miller got 46 percent of the vote.
Contributions to Rob Miller's campaign fund since Baby Wilson temper tantrum.....$751,562 from 20,494 American Citizens!!

Interesting article but rather...one sided in his view.
I am not sure that Robert E. Lee was once a national hero or Stonewall Jackson? They were both confederate generals. Fighting to destroy the United States! National heros???
He sees newer heros (and really...the only ones he can think of after 1865 are Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez) as replacing instead of in addition to earlier heros.
To him Christmas and Easter may have been holidays that united the country but I feel that really reinforces his "European Christian core" as he calls it.
I agree with the loss of civility in our lives but I think Mr. Buchanan is mourning the loss of his world. His experience of this country may not be the same as everyone else.
He doesn't even include rock as music that defined us!:D;)
But I find most offensive of all this statement...
One part of America loves her history, another reviles it as racist, imperialist and genocidal
I love American history - but not the fake "George Washington chopped down the cherry tree" type. I love the real American history - warts - genocide, racism and all. Fairy tales are for kids. I enjoy learning how this country has survived and prospered because of ordinary men and women who sometimes do extraordinary things.

Yes, I did notice the slant to the right; but much of what he said concerns me. The sheer nastiness prevalent these days. Maybe it's because of my age - growing up in a kinder, simpler world where politeness was a virtue
As for Robert E. Lee - he was a national hero. He was asked to command the Northern troops, but could not betray his home state of Virginia. His father was a hero of the Revolutionary War, and Robert stood out during the Mexican War. He commanded West Point for a few years during the 1850s.

But at the end, Lee was a traitor.
I agree with you on the nastiness. I see some connection to another thread - the one about reality shows. I find the very tone of American Idol and that ilk rather nasty and the peeping tom shows invasive. Pam posted perhaps it is a generational thing. In thinking about that I think of Facebook, Tweetering, and sending nude photos of yourself over the cell phone - whatever the name for that is...
My grandparents had neighbors all their lives. The Murdocks. They had an only child the same as my mother - also an only child. The two families were like one. And until the day she died my grandmother never called her anything but Mrs. Murdock.
People are more open now and I think the quote "familiarity breeds contempt" might be at play in the increased nastiness.
Although I do think Buchanan might want to do a bit of self-reflection. I remember when his sister married a man who was not a Catholic. He refused to speak to her or acknowledge her. Until she divorced.
This might explain his bias in his choice of heros...
Buchanan has English, German, Scots Irish, and Irish ancestry. He had a great-grandfather who fought in the American Civil War on the Confederate side. He is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and admires Robert E. Lee.

Representative Pelosi did not want to sanction Wilson - she publically stated her preference to focus on healthcare. But she was encouraged by other representatives to do so. And a leader - something you might not understand - sometimes takes the counsel of those they lead.
Honestly, some people are so full of hate they can't even be bothered to read what has been all over the news. Why deal in the truth when you can be disgusting instead?

Heaven forbid someone get a wild hair & attempt to assassinate thePresident because they though they were saving this country somehow.
I agree with this 1,000,000 percent. ANY kind of violent action against the government would bring about the worst kind of tryanny you can imagine. If some crazy fool did something, they would get exactly what they don't want.
Please dear God I pray... Please do not let it come to violence.
Just see how fast these loons back away from responsibilty for actions they cause with their hate speeches. Talk about a rebellion.
.
Can you please clarify who the "loons" are? Some of the people at large or the talking heads?
Hate speeches? Can you be a little more specific? HATE is a pretty powerful word. I have not heard any "mainstream" pundit on any side call for HATEful action.

That said, I think it is a bit of a stretch to link him to Tiller's murder. Scott Roeder was ALREADY crazy. 99% of those fools in the "militas" are NUTS already. If I go and say "I think abortion is wrong" and a crazy person hears it, snaps and kills a person.... Am I culpable?

I liked the article on Pelosi. Thanks. I understand where she is coming
from. Her statement saying .....
"Our country is great because people can say what they think and they believe," she added. "But I also think that they have to take responsibility for any incitement that they may cause."
Heaven forbid someone get a wild hair & attempt to assassinate the

So, she's asking every one to be kinder, gentle when we talk about the prez, yet she had nothing to say about people throwing shoes, Bush hater comments and sites like the huffington post?
I seem to remember the stink about Tony Snow's revelation of cancer and the moron who posted about him dying a painful death because he was the press sect for GWB?
She really should get a grip on reality because she really has no grasp of the concept.
----------------------------------
The building I worked in had a gift shop and the woman who ran it-it was a volunteer operation and non profit to boot-ran the place with these delusions that it was HER private business. She was a tool and treated the women, mostly retirees, with very little respect or dignity.
NP reminds me of that woman.
Her 'shop' does not belong to her, the bullying and talk really has no bearing on the BIG picture and she is just a figure head in her position.
She has shown that she is a puffoon ;) and her equation of a 'workplace murder' that happened 30 years ago to signs and placards shown at a march is a stretch under any circumstances.
She must be either delusional, stupid, delusional and stupid, a moron or on the verge of stupidity, clearly show by her inability to own up to her own spoken words.
Again,
She told us that the CIA lies to Congress, when called on the carpet to explain how she came to that conclusion she acts like my dad did during the onslaught of his Alzheimer's.
My dad would never talk ill of the government anyway.;)
-----------------------------
She's clearly an embarassment to either side of the aisle and can't seem to quite her facts straight about the murders of Milk and Moscone.
It had nothing to do with gay rights or 'rhetoric'- It was some poor jackass who lost his job and went on a killing spree. I am sure if Dan White had paraded in front of his old job with a anti whatever sign, the connection might have some valor.
She can talk all about people being responsible for their words and actions.
Until she shows me that? She's just another dottering, foolish woman who is on the down hill side of skiing Bandini Mountain.
-----------------------------------
Bandini was a company that made fertilizer. They had an actor dressed up in winter clothes and skis try to make it down the side of a mountain made of poop-It was a great commercial and people still use the line, Skiing Bandini Mountain to this day.
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Ads+can+be+cute%2c+even+heartwarming%2c+but+it+mat ters+little+if+they+...-a08908510
No man has greater love for his job than Ball. He once skied down a man-made mountain of Bandini fertilizer for a commercial when the actor assigned to the task balked. "I had to join the Screen Actors Guild and I still get minor residuals," he comments.
Keep your mouth and eyes closed, Nancy.
It's a long way down.:eek::(

Glen Beck is truly frightening. When I was in Nursing School, back in the dark ages, my psych training was in one of those huge state hospitals. He says the SAME thing. I cannot listen to him regularly anymore I just don't have the time. Only when I happen to be in the car the same time he is on.
He says all the time that people who only listen to tidbits or what the media has to say about him will think the way you do. And for the 2nd part.... You have obviously never heard him talk about his family.
And for the paranoid schizophrenic part... Perhaps 3 years ago. LOL But he now has a staff of something like 12 people who vet, throughly, anything he says for sometimes weeks before he airs it. FWIW, it is very important to him that what he says is true and in context.
His style is certainly not timid and I can see why certain people would be afraid of it. But his content is dead on. Why do you think the media goes after him with the same rubbish all the time? ('racism', 'fearmongering', etc...) Because he is real and I believe has nothing to hide. Thus they cannot find anything to stick.
So, you can listen to/read him and possibly understand him.... Or you can belive Media Matters/Huff Po/Keith Olbermann/The moron on 'hardball'... etc...
Most importantly though... He has a right, like we all do, to 'offensive' political speech. While I pray for no violence first and foremost... Perhaps the one thing that would set off the powder keg is to shut down people like Beck, like Hannity (I really despise that guy), Keith Olbermann, Huff Po, etc.... Which sadly is the basic idea of Cass Sunstein, the new "Regulatory Czar".
Maybe Beck is scary because we live in scary times?

Well, first, he does the "GET OFF MY PHONE" thing all the time. Callers and his staff make fun of him when he gets so excited that his voice cracks like that. But, that is simply style.
What matters to me is content. And the caller really was just making assumptions about him, especially at the end. Also, the caller clearly never listens to the show and knows what Glenn is really all about.

The shooter had personal grudges against all three. I doubt very much that anyone inspired him - other than his own personal demons. With the protester, he didn't like the graphics on the signs - thought kids shouldn't be exposed to them.

I wasn't implying, assuming, comparing or curtailing.
If a person - pundit or idiot - uses words to encourage another to kill, steal, cheat, lie or start forest fires - I think they should bear some responsibility if the person carries out the suggestion.
<<golf clap>> for your impression of Glenn Beck though! Or were you doing Hannity?
I said none of the crap you are trying to suggest and you know it.
So we had eight years of left wing, sorry progressive, pundits hoping for Shrub and Cheney to meet their maker. Riots from the hard lefties, sorry protests from the progresives, that trashed the protest areas, destroyed private property and squated on private property. We have had decades of the hard left in the MSM, sorry the progressives in the MSM, slanting the news in their favor. Heck the lefties, sorry again I meant the progressives, even trashed the National Mall during the Annointed One's inauguration that took 2 days to clean up.
How many czars are we up to now, 32? How many personal attendants does the First lady have, 27, 28, and what are they being paid, and who is paying them?
ACORN, a big supporter of the Long Legged Mack Daddy, is now disgraced, lost their federal funding, and left out to dry by the man they help get the most powerfull office in the world. Now who in the WH is going to do the 2010 census now that ACORN is out?

This does not surprise me coming from you. It follows your ideas on guns.
I think it is a insanely slippery slope to go anywhere near the idea of legally punishing people for speech. Quite Orwellian, no? Now this does not mean that people cannot exercise THEIR free speech rights when some clown says something stupid. Like the Dixie Chicks for example. They used their free speech rights and their audience used theirs.
I guess my question is would you support LAW making a person culpable for something they say inspiring another person to do something stupid? Better yet, how in the heck do you PROVE it?
It was not Hannity for sure. That guy is a grade 1 moron and nothing but a hack for the GOP. But how would you know who I am impersonating? Do you listen, read or watch either of them regularly?

In any event....to answer your question....what did I mean. I meant "don't shout fire in a crowded theater." If you do you will be responsible for the results.
Quick question, how many people has Obama killed? Did he kill them or by his actions or inactions cause people to be killed?.
The difference between Beck and the rest of talk radio and Hittler is, Beck hasnt, nor can he order people to rise up with violence. Beck is not shouting fire on his radio or TV show.
When the Lefties, sorry moderates, hear people saying they "hope it doesnt come to a rise to arms", or "a second revolution", they hear the opposite.

I fail to understand how one can judge actions and/or words and not be judging the person... Isn't that what defines a person? Does not how we express ourselves show others what we think and thus what kind of person we are?
It matters to me because context and tone are important, IMO. I am a student of history. Looking back at events from the different sides of things shows that context is very important. But I also realize that quite often those things are difficult to express properly in this medium. Perhaps that was the case here. I reckon in the grand scheme of things, it does not matter much.

I can see the brain trust in the WH thinking, then sending BO's daughter out to show what a family man he is.

Daddy,
Let me give you a hug, since you have 'dropped the ball' playing games instead of playing prez!!!
Awww Richard - that wasn't nice. :( From what I've seen, he appears to be a good family man. At least he should get good marks for that...;)

Ick.
And some people wonder why racism is still suspected.
I have no idea who the baseball player is who hugged his daughter. Not everyone has the time or inclination to watch games.
But to suggest anyone else who then hugs his daughter does it for political reasons.

I would like to see ONE TIME anyone suggested Bush loved his daughters to score political points.
Not funny in any way shape or form.
If you think that is funny....you were NOT...NOT born with a sense of humor. Something else - but not humor.
Did you think it funny when Limbaugh insulted Chelsea Clinton?
Do you think it is funny to stick firecrackers in frogs? Same "humor."

Not sure where racism comes in from this...
But it is hard to fake ones love for their children. I think our President is a ego-maniac, extremely Marxist in his politics and dangerous for our country. But I also believe that he truly loves and cares for his children. Short of mental illness, it is practically impossible NOT to love your children with every fiber of your soul.
As for possibly hamming it up for the cameras??? He IS a politican after all. Its what they do.

A MINORITY VIEW

Lying Propaganda
Michael Moore's new film, "Capitalism: A Love Story" will be released next month. I've neither seen nor read reviews of the film, except for a short piece in the London Telegraph (9/6/09) titled "Michael Moore film calls capitalism evil." Aware of Michael Moore's previous films, I know that it will be at best a misleading story about capitalism. So let's do some defensive mental preparation, not about the film but what is and what is not capitalism.
Capitalism is an economic system characterized by private ownership and control over the means of production. The distribution of goods and services and their prices are mainly determined by competition in a free market. Under such a system the primary job of government is to protect private property, enforce contracts and ensure rule of law.
There has never been a pure free market capitalistic system just as there has never been a pure communist or socialist system, where there is government ownership of the means of production and each individual has equal access to society's resources. However, we can rank economies as to whether they are closer to capitalism or closer to communism or socialism. If one ranked countries according to whether they were closer to the capitalistic end of the spectrum or the socialistic or communistic end, then ranked countries according to per capita GDP and finally rank countries according to Freedom House's "Map of Freedom in the World," he would find a pattern that is by no means a coincidence. The people in those countries closer to the capitalist end of the economic spectrum have far greater income and enjoy greater human rights protections than those toward the socialist and communist end.
According to the London Telegraph article, Moore's film features priests who say capitalism is anti-Christian by failing to protect the poor. This is pure nonsense and revealed as such by asking, "If you're an unborn spirit, condemned by God to a life of poverty but allowed to choose the country in which to be poor, would you choose a country near the communist end of the economic spectrum or the capitalist end?" If you chose the United States, you'd find that according to the government surveys, the typical "poor" American has cable or satellite TV, two color TVs, and a DVD player or VCR. He has air conditioning, a car, a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, and a clothes washer and dryer, and whether he has health insurance or not, he is able to obtain medical care when needed. Try to find that in Cuba, Russia, China or North Korea. If we buy into the nonsense of Moore's priests, the world's poor people are incredibly stupid. Whether fleeing legally or illegally, their destination country is likely to be closer to capitalism than their departure country.
Most of our country's serious problems can be laid at the feet of Congress and the White House and not at capitalism. Take the financial crisis. One-third of the $15 trillion of mortgages in existence in 2008 are owned, or securitized by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae, the Federal Housing and the Veterans Administration. Banks didn't mind making risky loans and Wall Street buyers didn't mind buying these repackaged loans because they assumed that they would be guaranteed by the federal government: read bailout by taxpayers. Under a capitalist system, financial institutions would not have been intimidated or encouraged into making risky loans and neither would they have been bailed out if they did so.
Social Security, Medicare and its coverage of prescription drugs have an unfunded liability that exceeds $100 trillion. When those roosters come home to roost, they will make the financial meltdown we've been though look like child's play.
Not withstanding all of the demagoguery, it is capitalism not socialism is that made us a great country and its socialism that will be our undoing.

Again,
WHO brought racism into the conversation?
IF you want to paint me with the color of a racist, prove it by quoting or give me a link to my so called 'sin'.
Call me stupid, disrespectful or a smart arse. You'll get away with that.
Now you have to defend your allegation that I brought race into thread.
LOL, I have had my run-ins with 'whitey' during my time on earth and that doesn't bother me. As a matter of fact, you could go back and edit your post and save yourself the hassle of getting called out about your posting....
I will not bother to even ask for an apology, because some people think that I am being uber sensitive about the whole deal and I know that you cannot get blood from a turnip or common sense from someone who doesn't like baseball.....
Here's a little hint about playing the race card game.
Fold your hand before you get to the point of yelling RACISM.
You make yourself look like a piker and you end up losing a little credibility in the process.
----------------------------
Barack Hussein Obama-
He wants everyone to forget racism
Including the people who suspect it in every thing they read.
MMMM MMMM MMMMM!
-------------------------
Just finished watching the Ben Netanyahu speech to the UN.
Boy,
We should really pay attention to the people we put into office.
This was a perfect admonition to the rest of the world. He challenged every world leader-something that cannot be done because when your leader is always apologizing for 'mistakes'
we made.
BN just put on tape his wishes for peace in the Mid East. He wants to be met halfway. Let's see how the eff ups react.
It gets very taxing to hear politicians not want to dip their hands into the dish becaue we are afraid of being 'misread' as far as our military actions.
Let's do it this way.
Pick any topic that two governments disagree on.
Let them take 20,000 men and their equipment and we'll do the same. (we can adjust the numbers for the countries who have small armies.)
We'll map out a nice hundred square mile box and see who kicks the most
arse. Who ever wins, gets THEIR way.
Pu it on pay-per-view and let R Lee Ermey be the divine Head of TV War Games.
Carry On!

Come on ES. You are smarter than this. You MUST know the difference between being in a position of authority and giving an order and political opinion speech?
....
But anyway... No answer to my question? Would you support LAW making opinion pundits somehow legally culpable for actions of their listeners?
I thought this topic would make for interesting cocktail party conversation. And so I brought it up at a party.
I was asked this question....if people are not responsible for the actions their words incite people to...why is Charles Manson in prison? He did not kill anyone - he incited and encouraged others to do so.
I think most of us would agree that prison is the place Manson belongs - at best. He was not a "person in a position of authority" (of course, neither was Hilter for most of his hideous career. And still people followed his words and engaged in heinous acts.)
So the next question became...if a "pundit" is not responsible for the actions of their listeners by virtue of being a "pundit"...can you call yourself a "pundit" and therefore escape responsibility?
So I remain convinced - people should be responsible for the words they speak as much as for the actions they do.
Doesn't mean they can't speak -- just means they have to be responsible.

Weak as always ES.
I would not offer a real answer if I were you either....
Anti Americans at home and around the world rejoiced, danced in the streets and laughed at our misery 8 years ago. Granted some, like my brother who believed it was an inside job, grieved with the rest of us.
Is Obama our Nero? Will he and his supporters laugh as we go down in flames?

How does one answer irrational statements?
Barak Obama is my president as I am a citizen of the United States of America. He is your president as well. You think he is a marxist because he talks about redistribution of weath. I did not hear him advocate it.
But then - that is what people like you do. If you repeat things enough some people will begin to believe. I see no evidence of "marxist" so how can I refute something that isn't there.
Insult me all you want PS...after all - it is what you do best! And far easier than...say thinking...

Glad I make you happy.
What was I thinking - you might want to stretch your mind. So sorry!
You continue to channel Sean Hannity - seems to be the best you can do. Show me where I suggested Glenn Beck and Charles Manson were the same? Or that Glenn Beck has committed a crime.
I am talking about personal responsiblity. And people accepting responsibility.
Obviously you do not believe that people should be responsible for what they say and do.
Got it.
