If Blago was convicted of selling the seat, that would imply the person holding the seat purchased it. It takes two to tango.

Indeed it would. If that had been what he was convicted of. But as you stated above (and Liz reiterates) "trying to sell the seat" is not the same as "selling the seat."

Food for thought ??

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a
permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal
policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

>From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."

No mate, it was Athens in Greece. They had their Golden Age the same as most other civilisations, but it eventually collapsed from within. The Romans lasted longer, but they eventually fell to.
But yes, the reasons for that are quite accurately written in my previous post. ;)

Well blue old mate. Here's some facts.
The only country mentioned in my post was Greece. There was no mention at all about the USA or any other country for that matter. Perhaps our "Fly On The Wall" believes I am having a shot at the tiny little world she exists in.

Secondly, the post made no mention of republics, it was purely and simply a quote written about a democracy. Altho, if our fly on the wall knew anything else other than where Paul Revere bought his horse, then perhaps she would understand the truth in that post regarding rise and fall of nations.

Thirdly, no one knows WHO wrote that quote. Just because someone at Snopes says it wasn't Tytler means nothing to me. That's HIS opinion. My opinion is that Tytler did write it, and Tytler was VERY accurate. It's not the quote that was questioned by Snopes, it was who wrote the quote.

So if our fly on the wall believes Snopes, then so be it. But we will allow her to tell us WHO wrote the quote.... I mean....she knows everything...right ??? ;)

Um, did you follow the story at all? Folks at the paper he is shutting down went far beyond the tactics of most of the normal muckraking media outlets. They not only hacked into people's phones, repeatedly, regardless of the consequences, they even did so in the case of a missing child, and deleted messages on her cell phone, making her poor parents - and the investigators - believe she was alive somewhere and accessing her phone, when instead she has been murdered already.

Question. The NEA just met here in Chicago and announced that they're endorsing Obama for President in 2012. There are Republicans who are still entering the race, but the NEA has already endorsed Obama versus an unknown opponent. Are they saying that they believe Obama would be better than any possible Republican candidate? What if the Republicans identify someone who can out-Obama Obama? On the other hand it seems like labor unions go toward Democratic candidates in general. I'm not happy with everything Obama has done, but he's got problems everywhere he looks. The economy? Problems. Gang violence and drugs? Big problems. Iraq and Afghanistan and terrorism? Even bigger problems. Joblessness? Problems. Health care? Long-term problems as Medicare runs out of money and Boomers and Gen X'ers like me get older. But he's only a little more than halfway through his first term and big change takes time. I would not want to be President even for a minute, no way, no how.

Excuse me for being dumb, but can someone explain to me just what in the world the debt ceiling is? I'd never heard of it until this year.

How does raising it help us? Is it the amount we can borrow or the amount other countries will loan us or what?

You are not dumb. I don't think many people outside of Washington DC know
or understand what the debt ceiling is (including me). :)

This explains it a bit.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/jan-june11/debtceiling_05-16.html

It's the amount of money that the Government is allowed to borrow this
year or any year. The debt limit is set by Congress & can be raised by them.

Thanksgiving 2022

"Winston, come into the dining room, it's time to eat," Julia yelled to her husband. "In a minute, honey, it's a tie score," he answered. Actually Winston wasn't very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington.

Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its "unseemly violence" and the "bad example it sets for the rest of the world," Winston was far less of a football fan than he used to be. Two-hand touch wasn't nearly as exciting.

Yet it wasn't the game that Winston was uninterested in. It was more the thought of eating another Tofu Turkey. Even though it was the best type of Veggie Meat available after the government revised the American Anti-Obesity Act of 2018, adding fowl to the list of federally-forbidden foods, (which already included potatoes, cranberry sauce and mince-meat pie), it wasn't anything like real turkey. And ever since the government officially changed the name of "Thanksgiving Day" to "A National Day of Atonement" in 2020 to officially acknowledge the Pilgrims' historically brutal treatment of Native Americans, the holiday had lost a lot of its luster.

Eating in the dining room was also a bit daunting. The unearthly gleam of government-mandated fluorescent light bulbs made the Tofu Turkey look even weirder than it actually was, and the room was always cold. Ever since Congress passed the Power Conservation Act of 2016, mandating all thermostats-which were monitored and controlled by the electric company-be kept at 68 degrees, every room on the north side of the house was barely tolerable throughout the entire winter.

Still, it was good getting together with family; or at least most of the family. Winston missed his mother, who passed on in October, when she had used up her legal allotment of live-saving medical treatment. He had had many heated conversations with the Regional Health Consortium, spawned when the private insurance market finally went bankrupt, and everyone was forced into the government health care program. And though he demanded she be kept on her treatment, it was a futile effort. "The RHC's resources are limited," explained the government bureaucrat Winston spoke with on the phone. "Your mother received all the benefits to which she was entitled.
I'm sorry for your loss."

Ed couldn't make it either. He had forgotten to plug in his electric car last night, the only kind available after the Anti-Fossil Fuel Bill of 2021 outlawed the use of the combustion engines-for everyone but government officials. The fifty mile round trip was about ten miles too far, and Ed didn't want to spend a frosty night on the road somewhere between here and there.

Thankfully, Winston's brother, John, and his wife were flying in. Winston made sure that the dining room chairs had extra cushions for the occasion.
No one complained more than John about the pain of sitting down so soon after the government-mandated cavity searches at airports, which severely aggravated his hemorrhoids. Ever since a terrorist successfully smuggled a cavity bomb onto a jetliner, the TSA told Americans the added "inconvenience" was an "absolute necessity" in order to stay "one step ahead of the terrorists." Winston's own body had grown accustomed to such probing ever since the government expanded their scope to just about anywhere a crowd gathered, via Anti-Profiling Act of 2022. That law made it a crime to single out any group or individual for "unequal scrutiny," even when probable cause was involved. Thus, cavity searches at malls, train stations, bus depots, etc., etc., had become almost routine. Almost.

The Supreme Court is reviewing the statute, but most Americans expect a Court composed of six progressives and three conservatives to leave the law intact. "A living Constitution is extremely flexible," said the Court's eldest member, Elena Kagan. " Europe has had laws like this one for years."
We should learn from their example," she added.

Winston's thoughts turned to his own children. He got along fairly well with his 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, mostly because she ignored him. Winston had long ago surrendered to the idea that she could text anyone at any time, even during Atonement Dinner. Their only real confrontation had occurred when he limited her to 50,000 texts a month, explaining that was all he could afford. She whined for a week, but got over it.

His 16-year-old son, Jason, was another matter altogether. Perhaps it was the constant bombarding he got in public school that global warming, the bird flu, terrorism or any of a number of other calamities were "just around the corner," but Jason had developed a kind of nihilistic attitude that ranged between simmering surliness and outright hostility. It didn't help that Jason had reported his father to the police for smoking a cigarette in the house, an act made criminal by the Smoking Control Statute of 2018, which outlawed smoking anywhere within 500 feet of another human being.

Winston paid the $5,000 fine, which might have been considered excessive before the American dollar became virtually worthless as a result of QE13. The latest round of quantitative easing the federal government initiated was, once again, to "spur economic growth." This time they promised to push unemployment below its years-long rate of 18%, but Winston was not particularly hopeful.

Yet the family had a lot for which to be thankful, Winston thought, before remembering it was a Day of Atonement. At least he had his memories. He felt a twinge of sadness when he realized his children would never know what life was like in the Good Old Days, long before government promises to make life "fair for everyone" realized their full potential. Winston, like so many of his fellow Americans, never realized how much things could change when they didn't happen all at once, but little by little, so people could get used to them.

He wondered what might have happened if the public had stood up while there was still time, maybe back around 2011, when all the real nonsense began.
"Maybe we wouldn't be where we are today if we'd just said 'enough is enough' when we had the chance," he thought.

Maybe so, Winston. Maybe so.

blue....she ain't got a source....hee hee.

Now for some real facts.
Australia has one of the best health systems in the world. We probably have one of the lowest unemployment figures in the world. Unionism rears it's ugly head every time a Labor party gets voted in, but they won't last long, and the unions will fall back on their butts where they belong.
Australia doesn't have a shot economy, almost falling into third world status like some. The Australian dollar is way stronger than the US dollar. And, believe it or not, we here have more freedom of speech than you all in US do.

Good God, who is she calling "Maties".....I could'nt imagine any Australian in their right mind who would even consider "mateship" with that one....I think that term would be well beyond her. ;)

What an interesting fact! Union membership in the US - in private industry is about 6.9% and 36% in the public sector continuing a downward trend.

Why such a disparity between the public sector and private industry, I wonder?

Why such a disparity between the public sector and private industry, I wonder?

There are a couple reasons for the difference. Unions are attractive to employees who do not feel any control over their worklife - employees who work for large, impersonal employers where the decisions makers are far away from them. That rather defines most public sector jobs - postal service, firefighters, police, teachers, etc. Hospital are becoming fertile ground for union organizers - large organizations - decision makers far away.

Smaller employers are more able to know what is going on in the organization and put out fires. Smaller organization can simply respond faster to problems.

Wages are rarely the reason most union campaigns get started. And most campaigns begin when employees contact the union rather than the other way around. When I was working in labor relations I was involved in a few campaigns - and every time it was the same thing - favoritism - the boss.

For example, in San Diego County the average number of employee is 12. Most people in the US public sector work for small/medium sized employers where the perceived need for a union is less.

You mention favoritism - the boss. What do you mean by that? Like ignoring someones seniority in the company, breaking company rules, as an example. The boss would be non-union working for the company as the employee would be union working for the company type of thing? Do the bosses get reprimanded by the company like firing or transferred someplace else? I know of a company three faults by the employee even if they are protected by the union & out the door they go.

The most common complaint leading employees to try and bring a union into the workplace is favoritism by the boss. Not being treated "fairly" by the boss. Some people always getting the dirty jobs - that sort of thing. This is before a union is elected so there is no non-union boss - union employees - yet. Yes, I have seen managers and supervisors who are disciplined - including termination - for not doing their job well. In the campaigns I have been involved in - the first thing is to make sure the supv/mgr understands his/her role. Often having a meeting with the supv/mgr present to ask employees what are the complaints and expecting the the supv/mgr to accept responsibility and talk through the issues.

Interesting to note, the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that you cannot fire the supv/mgr until after the vote. Or at least made it very dangerous to do so.

Ohhhh.....look what I found..........

There seems to be a lot of debate around the water cooler and the dinner table as to which President is most responsible for the increase in the National Debt.
(Note: This debate also includes future paupers like ES)

In this article, I’d like to take a look at the growth in the National Debt by President using an unbiased approach. This analysis uses National Debt figures from the U.S. Treasury Department and the White House Office of Management and Budget.

To be sure, there is plenty of blame to go around for the uncontrolled growth in the National Debt. For this analysis, I’ve begun with Ronald Reagan’s first term and followed it through the first year of Barack Obama’s administration. No effort has been made to cast any particular President in a favorable or unfavorable light.

The numbers below do NOT reflect the actual National Debt. Instead, they reflect the amount of the INCREASE in the National Debt during each presidential term.

> Ronald Reagan’s First Term – $656 billion increase

> Ronald Reagan’s Second Term – $1.036 trillion increase

> George H.W. Bush’s Term – $1.587 trillion increase

> Bill Clinton’s First Term – $1.122 trillion increase

> Bill Clinton’s Second Term – $418 billion increase

> George W. Bush’s First Term – $1.885 trillion increase

> George W. Bush’s Second Term – $3.014 trillion increase

> Barack Obama’s First “Year” – $1.573 trillion increase

To summarize, the National Debt increased by huge amounts under each of these presidents. The largest increase for a complete term occured during George W. Bush’s second term. The largest increse during a single year occurred during Barack Obama’s first year.

Current Obama administration projections indicate that the National Debt will increase by approximately $6.5 trillion during President Obama’s first term. If that happens, then he will obviously overtake President Bush’s record increase in the National Debt.

It is clear that the National Debt has been growing uncontrollably in recent years, regardless of which political party has been in power. To reverse this trend, we need to hold our elected officials accountable and demand that they balance the budget and reduce the National Debt.

Wow ES.....yer really are living beyond your means.....eh ??? :D:D:D:D:D

Here ya go............

In 1984 a comprehensive health care system, Medicare, was introduced. Medicare facilitates access by all eligible Australian residents to free or low-cost medical, optometric and public hospital care, while leaving them free to choose private health services.

Individuals’ financial contributions to the public health care system are based on their income and are made through a taxation levy known as the Medicare levy.

Australia’s public hospital system is jointly funded by the Australian Government and state and territory governments and is administered by state and territory health departments.

People admitted to public hospitals as public (Medicare) patients receive treatment by doctors and specialists nominated by the hospital. They are not charged for care and treatment or after-care by the treating doctor.

Private patients in public or private hospitals can choose the doctor who treats them. Medicare pays 75 per cent of the Medicare schedule fee for services and procedures provided by the treating doctor. For patients who have private health insurance, some or all of the outstanding balance may be covered. Private patients are charged for hospital accommodation and items such as theatre fees and medicine. These costs may also be covered by private health insurance but are not covered by Medicare.

Medicare Australia is the agency within the Department of Human Services responsible for processing and paying Medicare benefits for approved services. Medicare Australia also pays pharmaceutical benefits under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, which subsidises an agreed list of prescription drugs.

For both medical and pharmaceutical services, safety net arrangements exist to make sure patients who need a high level of treatment or medication during a financial year do not incur significant out-of-pocket expenses. Out-of-pocket costs are the difference between the Medicare benefit and what the patient is actually charged.

The Australian Government also provides medical, pharmaceutical and hospital services for veterans, war widows and their eligible dependants under legislation administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

The Australian Government provides about two-thirds (67 per cent) of public sector expenditure on health, and state, territory and local governments provide the rest.

Note: I have what they call a "Gold Card" Pat. They are issued automatically to war veterans over 70 years of age, and to those like myself who have a war caused disability. The card is given to us regardless of assets. Joe Blow living on the street, or as rich as Rupert Murdoch.....meeting the age and disability criteria automatically gets you issued one. The benefit of the Gold Card ??? Everything is free. Doctors, Specialists, Hospitals, Treatment, Medicines, Dental, Physiotherapy, Optometrical....every single thing related to our health is free.

As for down sides, well no system is perfect, so we do get the hiccup now and again, but overall it works very well for everyone, and almost everyone is happy with it. Oh, you always get the people who don't agree with the system, but some people don't agree with anything....right??

As to why this system is so contentious in the US, then I'd have to agree with LH on that. We have a very strong economy here, and the government does keep the system going by injecting funds from revenues into it. So I suppose when your economy gets back on it's feet, then there will be less against and more FOR that kind of system.

We have a Medicare levy. The rate of the Medicare levy is 1.5% of taxable income. In some cases, you may be exempt from the medicare levy or eligible for a reduction based on family income.
Low income earners who make less than a certain amount are exempt.
High income earners pay a surcharge in addition to the 1.5% of their taxable income (this is so that the wealthy can't take advantage of the public system, they have a choice, pay the surcharge or get private health insurance.)

Not really Pat. I think 99.9% of Australians would probably tell you that "Congress" means a beer and shrimp BBQ. And there's never much on the media here about American politics.
I email a lot of US artillery veterans who were with me in Nam, and when they are unhappy about something, I get bombarded with all kinds of political stuff from over there. :D
Plus I had a lot of brothers and sisters in law who were Americans (connected to my first wife, who is now ancient history), and they used to talk about their politics to me when they came here or I went there.

For those who are unfamiliar with Mr. Begala, keep in mind that he is a long serving Democratic campaign strategist and adviser.

The article is far from the truth. It makes good partisan rhetoric, but as a factual piece it fails miserably.

Wall street deregulation (which Begala states is the cause of the crisis) started in 1999 when Pres. Clinton signed the financial modernization act, which removed the walls between securities firms, insurers, and banks. Had Pres. Clinton vetoed it, the veto likely would have stood, as Congress was too tightly contested to override a Presidential veto.

Despite the constant cries stating that the tax cuts signed into law by Pres. Bush are the cause of the current fiscal crisis, Federal tax revenue rose steadily from 2002 to 2007. Prior to 2002, the economy was in a state of flux driven by the collapse of the the tech stock bubble with the equally economically disastrous 9/11 attack. In 2008 federal revenue fell as the housing bubble burst.

To pin the current debt crisis on one party is foolish. Both are to blame, and both are to blame equally.

Anyone who has worked in a business knows you cannot be successful by just cutting costs. You must also increase revenue. Anyone who has ever been responsible for a family budget knows the same thing. And you certainly cannot increase costs and cut revenue and not expect a disaster.

Starting two wars and cutting taxes at the same time was the most idiotic decision.

Whether partisan, bi-partisan or non-partisan it doesn't change that truth.

IMO, this had a greater impact. Fannie/Freddie. Follow the money. You do not even have to take any pundit's word. Just do your own digging, its easy enough to find the truth.

Demolicans.... Republicrats. Different sides of the same coin.

To pin the current debt crisis on one party is foolish. Both are to blame, and both are to blame equally.

LH for the win! (And the note about tax rates go down, revenue increases. Again, not a 'partisan' thing, facts. Easy enough to find and prove on one's own.)

Just watch the idiots we send to DC fight over this.... And people STILL want to play 'partisan'. As if one 'side' is better than the other. LOL

Question of the day. Why do certain people want to INcrease tax rates on the "rich"? We realize that its an INCOME tax, right? Where are the people screaming for a Capital Gains Tax increase if they want to sock it to the rich? The evil, super rich have little, if any, 'income' that gets taxed in the traditional way. This is something important to note as we allow them to engage us in class warfare.

A curse that we now here rehearse in Philadelphia
A second flood, a simple famine
Plagues of locusts everywhere
Or a cataclysmic earthquake

But, no, you sent us Congress.
Good God, sir, was that fair?

I say it with humility in Philadelphia
We're your responsibility in Philadephia
If you don't want to see us hanging
From some far-off British hill
If you don't want the voice of independency
Forever still
Then God, sir, get thee to it
For Congress never will

You see, we piddle, twiddle, and resolve
Not one damn thing do we solve
Piddle, twiddle, and resolve
Nothing's ever solved in
Foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy
Philadephia!

They may sit here for years and years in Philadelphia.
These indecisive grenadiers of Philadelphia.
They can't agree on what is right and wrong
Or what is good or bad; I'm convinced
The only purpose this Congress ever had
Was to gather here specifically
To drive John Adams mad!

You see, we piddle, twiddle, and resolve
Not one damn thing do we solve
Piddle, twiddle, and resolve
Nothing's ever solved in
Foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy

MOFF - you need to send your bill to the House of Representatives. Or better yet - directly to the Tea Partiers. The ones who think, instead of Medicare - you should be given a voucher to shop for your medical insurance. Make those choices such - capitated or not? As my 87 year old mother says - on a good day she can shop for groceries - how can she be expected to understand and make all the decisions in selecting insurance? I am sure there are scam artist - in addition to the Tea Partiers - just waiting for that! Think of how they can fleece the elderly!

I was one of those who had my taxes reduced by the Bush Cuts. I remember looking at my paycheck and thinking - this will not make one iota of difference in my life. We already had two cars, a motorcycle, a house, two cats and lots of toys. What were we to buy to "create jobs"? (And to save time for the flying monkeys - no I did not give it back. That is more difficult than you think.)

Thankfully we saved it - knowing that those "raining days" would not be far behind such ridiculous fiscal actions as reducing revenue and increasing expenses.

Oh my, miracles do happen -

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., returned to Congress tonight for the first time since being shot in the head in January, casting a vote on the compromise debt ceiling bill.

She entered the chamber to loud, sustained applause and a standing ovation by her House colleagues, who huddled around her to give hugs, kisses and handshakes.

Vice President Joe Biden, with a big smile on his face, walked to the House floor and said, "I came to see Gabby, that's why I'm here."

Her spokesman C.J. Karamargin told Tucson Weekly: “The vote taking place today is the single most important vote taken this year by the House of Representatives. The congresswoman insisted on participating,” she said.

“Congresswoman Giffords has been following this debate closely over the past two weeks. Like the vast majority of Americans, she is extremely disappointed at Washington’s inability to confront the debt ceiling issue in a timely and thoughtful manner.”

Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs, who heads a breakaway Mormon sect, was found guilty on Thursday of child sexual assault for his so-called "spiritual marriages" to two underage girls.

A west Texas jury convicted the 55-year-old Jeffs of child sexual assault and aggravated child sexual assault over his relationships with the girls, ages 12 and 14, at his sect's Texas ranch. He faces up to 119 years in prison.

That's all well and good, but Buffet would be relatively immune from those taxes. He makes relatively little in "income", only $100,000 per year, which doesn't even put him in the top bracket.

You could raise income taxes to 50% and it wouldn't affect him one bit.

If Buffet thinks his taxes are too low, why doesn't he write a check to the IRS?

I think Mr. Buffet is missing the point....

There is plenty of liquidity out there. The big evil bankers are sitting on a lot of cash, most of it from the "stimulus". The question that should be asked, in relation to job creation is WHY are companies not willing to spend that cash on hiring new employees. Or perhaps ask why the banks are they not willing to loan that money to companies to spend? What happens when those trillions of dolllars actually get put into circulation, when there is already a lack of faith in the value of the dollar?

Taxing all the millionaries at 100% would barely put a dent in the debt, which, IMO, is what they are afraid of.

Quote: "The philanthropist said that his 2010 federal tax bill, including income and payroll taxes, was $6,938,744.

"That sounds like a lot of money," wrote the Omaha, Neb.-based billionaire. "But what I paid was only 17.4% of my taxable income - and that's actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office."

He added that some investment managers were taxed only 15% on billions of dollars in income. He compared that to the middle class, with its income tax bracket of up to 25%."

To put it in a nutshell, the reason CEOs take $1 salaries and other stunts is because their salaries affect their capital gains tax rate.

If your ordinary income tax (prior to capital gains and other income) is 10%, (as in you took a $1 salary for running Apple) your short term cap gains rate would be 10%, and your long term cap gains tax would be 0%.

It's rather disingenuous for Mr. Buffet to pay the taxes he does, in part based on his "meager" $100,000 salary, which is structured to take advantage of a loophole in the tax code, and then claim he isn't paying enough in taxes.

Again, if he doesn't think he pays enough in taxes, write a check to D.C..

It's all P.R. stunts, and people are taking the bait, hook, line and sinker.

Just to add a little to what LH said....

Income tax = What working stiffs understand. :) A tax paid on money you earn in the traditional way, generally a salary paid by an employer to an employee.

Capital Gains tax = You buy something (stocks, buildings, companies, etc....) and sell it for a profit. You invested capital and made a gain on that investment by selling it for a higher price than you paid.

Capital gains are taxed, but the capital gains tax rate is determined in large part by your non-capital gains income tax rate.

Depending on your "regular" income tax bracket, you could wind up paying 0% on those long term shares of Apple stock you got as compensation in lieu of salary last year, as you have to hold stock shares for one year to get the much lower "long term" capital gains rate.

I read an article that explained that before now, they would spend lots of money reoutfitting busses each month to be bullet-proof, etc. For once, this seems like a smart investment, a purpose-built vehicle, rather than slapping armor on something else. It would be cooler if it had solar panels on the top to help power it, though!

Even with the surface area of the bus, the solar panels might be useful to power the interior accassories, but would do bubkus to help power the monsters.

I disagree with one major point of the article, however, They give Standard and Poor's a pass on the bond rating downgrade, when S+P is as much a part of the political soup that's causing this mess as anyone else.

The entitlement issues needs to be dealt with, and the tax code as it exists needs to be scrapped. Completely. Clean sheet rewrite. Either a flat tax with a hard basic deduction raised annually by the CPI (as in anything under $30K isn't touched, adjusted for inflation) or a national sales tax.

Good luck there hoss. What politician is going to vote to repeal the 16th Amendment? You have to do that if you want a flat/sales tax. If you don't, we end up like Canada. Taxes on the money that was taxed already.

But I don't blame the politicians. I blame a lazy and ignorant electorate. Who actually has read and understands the Constitution anymore? Who has read the Federalist papers?

Every President has to deal with name calling and opposition from both the fringes of their own party and the entire opposition party.

Pres. Reagan was derided as senile, a lightweight, an Actor with no background, ad nauseum. He still accomplished much of the agenda he ran on despite his detractors and taking office during a massive recession.

Pres. Clinton was derided as a hick from Arkansas, his presidency was rife with scandal, and he still accomplished much (love it or hate it) on the legislative side.

The first President Bush never got out of the shadow of Reagan, and was an appeaser, never showed a backbone on domestic policy, and didn't communicate well.(read my lips.......)

The second President Bush ran as a conservative initially, had a strong foreign policy (love it or hate it, you knew where he stood) but domestically he tried to be everything to everyone, from No Child Left Behind to the medicare prescription drug benefit disaster. We will pay dearly for both of those.

When Presidents LEAD, they do well. When they appease or go to childish bullying, they do poorly.

IN MY BRIEF RESEARCH INTO THIS SUBJECT . I AM HAPPY TOO SHARE MY FINDINGS. I DO THIS AS A PUBLIC SERVICE.
THANK YOU.

Now we know the complete story!

The English language has some wonderfully collective nouns for the various groups of animals.

We are all familiar with a Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens, a School of fish and a Gaggle of geese.

However, less widely known is a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as well as their cousins the rooks and ravens), an Exaltation of doves and, presumably because they look so wise, a Parliament of owls.

Now consider a group of Baboons. They are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates.
And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons?

Believe it or not ....... a Congress! :D

Last election we had a rock singer, and a popular news reader who won seats.
Since then, nobody has heard a peep from the news reader, but the rock singer gave everyone in the country free ceiling installation, which backfired into his own face....haven't heard much from him since either.
Nobody should be voted in on popularity, but more so on policy. The sad fact is that a lot of people wouldn't know a good policy from a bad one, so rather than have someone who is experienced and knows what they are doing, the seat is usually filled by....
1) A Marlon Brando lookalike if the majority of voters have purple dyed hair.
2) BO, if a great deal of the voters depend on welfare because they don't like work, and the rest of his votes by those who feel sorry for the plight of BO's coloured folk because they feel sorry for them.
Not much to build a country on.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT

THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY WELL PUT AND I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT'S BY A YOUNG PERSON, A STUDENT!!!
WHATEVER HE RUNS FOR, I'LL VOTE FOR HIM.
Yep....I'll be on his side of the fence. ;)

Dear Australian Laborites, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists, Ms Gillard, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950's for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realise that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.

Our two ideological sides of Australia cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way

Here is a model separation agreement:
Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the ACTU, the Fabian Society and every member of Emilys List. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops and the military. We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and biodiesel. You can keep the ABC left wingers (particularly Kerry O'Brien) and Bob Brown. You are, however, responsible for finding an electric vehicle big enough to move all of them.

We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Woolworths and the Stock Exchange. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, dole bludgers, homeless, homeboys, hippies, druggies and boat people. We'll keep the budgie smuggling, bike riding, volunteer firemen and lifesavers, greedy CEOs and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and the churches and give you SBS and the Greens.

You can make peace with Iran, Palestine and the Taliban and we'll retain the right to stand up and fight when threatened. You can have the greenies and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judaeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness and Penny Wong.. You can also have the U.N. But we will no longer be paying the bill..

We'll keep the 4WDs, utes and V8s. You can take every hybrid hatchback you can find.

We'll keep "Waltzing Matilda" and our National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to keep in tune with Peter Garrett as he sings "Imagine", "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "Kum Ba Ya", "We Are The World" and his recent big solo hit Beds and Batts are Burning.

We'll practice trickle down economics and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it so often offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like-minded conservative Australians and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you answer which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

Sincerely,
John Wall
Australian Law Student

P.S. Also, please take Lindsey Tanner, Wayne Swan, Alan Griffin, John Faulkner, Kevin Rudd and Jenny Macklin with you.

P. S. S. And you won't have to press 1 for English when you call our country.

No, it's not just you. I didn't like the attacks on the Democrats, but it does show a lack of respect and lack of class on the part of the White House or Congressional staff that organized the medal ceremony.

There is too much politics in this country these days and not just with the politicians. Sometimes I really fear for my country.

Perhaps you need a new pair of glasses, wom. FYI, all the recent MOH ceremonies have been live on TV here in the States - for anyone interested to view.

I've seen them all, live and in HD. Very impressive with the other MOH recipients, and family members, present.

I saw the whole ceremony & felt that the focus was strictly on SSgt. Giunta & what he had done. He was very modest about the whole thing & would of rather saw his friends alive then receiving the medal. Pulling his friend out of there was for good reason as you saw on the U Tube the taliban mutilate their captures. SSgt. Giunta's buddies were also on camera, along with his family. The camera panned everyone involved.

Please explain to me how Congress can possibly justify another break? Here we are, on the verge of another gov shutdown because the bozos can't get a budget together. They were gone the entire month of August. Now they are on another break with the gov to shut down on the 31st.

What is it going to take to make them do their jobs? I don't understand how they can stand to look at themselves in the mirrors every day. Even if I had plenty to live on, I couldn't have peace with my self if I caused others undue hardships.

I think first thing on the budget should be to eliminate all of Congresses paid 'breaks', and no pay raises for them until they can prove they earned them. And only then after there is a balanced budget. sheesh:love:

MSNBC Is better than the Comedy Channel.

I try to watch everyone for a few minutes and have to laugh at the comments, the moderators and content.

What a bunch of rude clowns-they interrupt each other, talk so quickly that they do not make sense and generally play the same clips over and over again.

FOX is no better, but MSNBC is the best at smearing anyone they thing deserves it.

The twits on Morning Joe need lessons in etiquette, Chuck Todd needs to either do a political show or do a food channel show -WTF do I care about the 'soup of the day' in the cafeteria? Andrea Mitchell is a stuttering moron and I get tired of laughing at the rest of the 'moderators' on the channel.

Why is Rachel Madcow on the air? I love her commercials about the economy and little bits of why the U.S. sucks.

I stopped watching FOX for the same reasons....MSNBC is more entertaining because the THINK they are making a difference.

A lantrine @ a Boy Scout Jamboree makes more sense than most of the 'on air' news/political channels...

"Who sent him (to the protest)?"

She would have them been bleeped because she would have had some choice words about me and my stupidity.

The mom of this kid was just as stupid as he is.

She made a comment about telling her kids something like, 'get out there and live life...'

Seems like the kid got punched and roughed up while he was in the Egyptian clink.

I hope he remembers his civil rights and asks for a Miranda the next time he gets picked up in a foreign country.

Your party of choice is lucky to have you on their side. Yes, Rick Perry is a moron. Sorry, he ain't the guy who will destroy "President" Obama. Pick on the low hanging fruit, it rather suits you. LOL

Seriously... You want anyone with a brain cell to take you seriously and THIS is what you share? LOL

P.S. I can't wait for 2012. I can't wait to see how our Dear Leader runs his campaign. He has ZERO to run on. Lets hear how its all "the other guys" fault.

But Canada is like a foreign country today. You need a passport to enter into it. It use to be your driver license was enough.

As far as history goes do you all believe everything they taught you in school? I don't!

Just like you should not believe what comes out of the mouth of ANY politician. They all make promises they can't keep. It would be better if they promised nothing. The most important question I would have is can you balance your own check book?

The world is changing so fast my world map from National Geographic 2011 is already outdated. I have never heard of some of the countries that are now on the map.

Two to three times a day we keep getting poll calls. We will be glad when everyone packs up & moves on to the next state.

It is true when the president was here his speech consisted of putting the blame on everyone else. He has had plenty of time to take a hold of the reins.

Don't you have to have a passport to get into a foreign country? Passport is the key word here for me.

We never had to have a passport to drive into Canada & the same went for the Canadians when they would come down here. All you had to do is show your driver license.

If you are talking about the money exchange then that is a different story. Then I guess you would have to call them a foreign country?

What she meant, I am sure, is that border crossing is more involved and difficult than it used to be, making it more obvious you are crossing into a whole 'nother country.

Karen, They have a huge swath of land cut along the borders between Canada & the U.S. Only the wild critters can run or swim back & forth across the border. :D

I remember entry was your driver license, are you carrying any fire arms & ammo, how long will you be staying here? If they were suspicious of anything they would have you get out of your vehicle & proceed to pretty much take things apart looking for guns, drugs, etc., coming & going.

There's a library in a small town in Derby, Vermont. You go in the front door from the Vermont - and you are in Quebec when checking out books.

DERBY LINE, VT -- The world-famous Haskell Free Library and Opera House on Caswell Avenue here is probably the only cultural institution on this planet with a split personality. That's because the U.S./Canadian border slices right through the Kenneth Baldwin International Reading Room.

You enter the lovely turn-of-the-century building in Vermont, but you check out the books -- your choice of English or French -- in Quebec. And, the librarian who assists you may be either a citizen of the United States or Canada, or both and, probably bilingual.

In this part of Vermont, many residents of Quebec's border communities were born in Newport, thus also qualifying for U.S. citizenship. When the 400-seat Opera House reopens later this year following extensive safety and handicapped-accessibility renovations, patrons of the performing arts will again sit in the United States and applaud performances upon a Canadian stage.
The building and its facilities are governed by a seven-member board of trustees -- four Americans and three Canadians -- who serve without pay. The library lives up to the "free" part in its name: there are no membership fees, and no loan charges are made for book, tapes, or videos. All art exhibits, discussion groups, and other library programs are also free. However, you must usually pay to attend Opera House performances.

Border crossing between Canada and the U.S. tightened up after 9/11.. at least for crossing into the U.S. from Canada (I don't know if Canada has also tightened up on letting us in there). It was just too easy for anyone to cross over before.

Here's information on this topic from Transport Canada: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZfbTlYpKYo :D

I have an "enhanced" driver's license which supposedly (I haven't tried it out yet) enables me to cross the border without a passport. There are a few other documents available that will also authorize Americans to do that.

Oh, that's really neat! I'd love to see that some day. Have you been there, Gretchen?

I read about something similar recently, maybe in the New York Times, that said there is a lake or river between Washington State and British Columbia with an island in the middle of it. Half the island is in the U.S. and half in Canada, and on the island you can wander from one country to the other and back without passing through any checkpoints. However, to GET to or from the island you have to go through the customs check at whichever side you're coming from or going to.

And then there is the State of Virginia -

The Republican Party of Virginia will require all citizens of the state voting in the Republican primary on March 6, 2012 to sign a loyalty oath before being permitted to cast their votes.
Put plainly, anyone who shows up at the polling place must sign a form wherein he or she swears to support the Republican candidate who wins the nomination. Refusal to sign the pledge results in revocation of the right to vote in the Republican primary election.

Ron Paul.....well........frankly, your foreign policy concepts scare the hell out of me.

We need an additional choice on every ballot: None of the above.

If none of the above wins, then the pool gets flushed and you start over.

Really? Sure doesn't feel like it to me. I've seen my property value almost double and then return to exactly where it was when I bought it. Everything costs more, gasoline, milk, my health insurance. And I'm getting less. I'm paying the same price for ice cream and getting 1 1/2 quarts instead of half a gallon. Lots of people are still unemployed. Lots of people can't get the health care they need. America will be back when people are working and the economy is robust again.

Also -- I don't think it is right that in an election year the current President uses the State of the Union address as a campaign speech. That is not the purpose of the address.

OK, I admit I don't know much about US politics, but my impression of B. Obama is very positive - the American people who live here also seem to prefer him. :) It seems a lot of you don't like him. Do you think another president would have done better? In the light of the financial crisis (which is not B. Obama's fault, and that is an entirely different discussion), I think the outcome could have been far worse. At least B. Obama is trying to do something for the less wealthy people and he withdrew the troops from Iraq.

Can you imagine what would have happened if any of these other ignorant candidates had made it into politics! I think you got a good deal with B. Obama. :) If only we were so lucky here! :p
