Driver hit, killed after freeing himself from wreck

Updated: March 10, 2008 01:53 PM EDT

Madison County - Police are investigating an early morning accident that led to a man's death and closed down State Road 9.

Police say the victim's pickup truck drove up a guardrail and then flipped upside down in a creek south of Pendleton.

The driver, identified as 52-year-old Glenn Barker of south Madison County, freed himself and started walking along SR 9. That's when police say he was hit by a car driven by 34-year-old Clarence Fanning of Anderson. Before Fanning could reach Barker to help, Barker was struck a second time, this time by a van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither Fanning or the driver of the van, John Herman of Greenfield, were injured, but were both visibly shaken. State Road 9 was closed for four hours while the accident was investigated.

Sounds like we're missing a chunk out of this story. The driver drove up a guardrail and then decided to walk along the freeway? Sounds like he was drunk, or at least not very smart.

It could also have been inclement weather, maybe he hit a patch of ice? In either case I'm curious as to how he had the accident in the first place. But darn the luck, someone above must have REALLY wanted him to join him :)
