Hi, Starr had his annual exam today and he now weighs a whopping 12.5lbs. Now I think that this is way too much for his small frame. I think he should only weigh between 9-10lbs. Pearl's a little longer than him and she only weighs a little over 9lbs. Storm is so much larger than him and he only weighs 14.5lbs and Sky is also a large cat and he weighs 13.5lbs. Last year Sunny weighed in at only 12.4lbs and a very long lean but muscular cat.

He's still on 2.5mg of pred every other day until around March 15th or so and then I'll start giving him 2.5mg of pred every 3 days for a while and then if all goes well I'll just give him 2.5mg of pred 1 day a week. Hopefully he'll be able to weaned off of this medicine completely. The vet said that he shouldn't gain any more weight but that he most likely won't loose it either. I don't free feed him and he receives 4 small portions of food a day.

My regular vet saw him today and she thinks he's doing very well. Since I'm very concerned about his weight gain she ran a blood glucose test and I should receive the results tomorrow. The test is called fructosamine #245 idexx and his accucheck glucose was 149 which the vet tech said is good. If his levels are high then I need to wean him off of the pred much sooner.

He's also been having problems cleaning his bottom due to his weight gain so the vet tech shaved his bottom area. Now hopefully this will help keep him clean. When Ziggy goes in for her annual in June, I'll have to remember to have this done for her too because she keeps getting cling ons stuck in her fluffy pantalooms.;)

I know he's doing much better now and this morning he was the most active cat of the bunch.:) That's all for now. Thanks for reading this.:)

Pred tends to make animals (and some people) eat and drink alot more sometimes causing a great deal of weight gain. Once Starr is off the pred the weight should stabalize a bit then gradually go back down. Just excercise him as much as possible for the time being.

Oh yes, those cling-ons on the fluffy pantaloons can be a problem, can't they.

I'm happy to hear that handsome Starr is doing well and hope that when he is off of the pred, that he will be able to loose the pounds, to be at a healthy weight.

You're such a good meowmie to your babies Tracey. :D

Hi, I finally received Starr's test results yesterday and his glucosamine is in the normal range so even though he's overweight he's fine.:) I have been trying to feed him a little less food and soon he'll be only taking his pred (1 2.5mg tablet) every 3 days which is basically 2 times a week.

Tracey, I'm glad to hear Starr's check-up was fine, although he's a little over weight. He'll probably lose it once he's off the Prednisone. :)

Give him a kiss from me!

I hope Starr comes off his medication soon and can start to get to a sexy svelte body shape again soon! :) Think yourself thin Starr, you can do it!

Thanks for all of your nice comments everyone.:) Starr has become much more active now than he used to be so hopefully he'll be able to shed a few pounds soon. I'm lucky in that most of my cats are very active and they love to play together so this will help him.:)
