National nail clipping night, tonight!

I have one front set completed. Its going to be a LONG night. I have the first aid kit opened in the bathroom, just in case! I am really trying to get Chloe's one front claw that is too thick and growns downward into her pad. I noticed that today, it is nearly penetrating the pad. Rather than spend $345 at the vet, I have decided to catch the little worm and clip that nail myself. I have padding on my lap and have a heavy long sleved sweather on too. Right now she's under the comfortor, keeping warm. She seems calm right nowl She let me look at the claw and touch it earlier today, so it must not hurt her at this point. I had compleley forgotten she has that one thick, bum nail.......and I was shocked to see how much it had grown and down into her poor little pad. Bad mom. I hope my clipping skills are up to par so that I don't freak her out too much. I should have had the claw completely removed when she was a kitten, as it was deformed then. The malformed claw made her a free kitty to me.....and was asked to NOT breed her since the entire litter had deformed claws.......The breeders will never match those two parents again. Chloe is one sweet girl though. One can hardly tell she has a nail issue on one paw. Don't we all have issues with our stupid toenails.

Here goes, I am going to catch her now.......wait....Right,,,,I just looked at her and she ran off the bed. Smart. Well, when I say I am going to do it, I am ......so this may be an all night affair.

I'm "doing" Max tonight as well but the best time is on a full stomach - his, that is. I'm waiting until he gets his full ration of food and settles down. Then he won't fight so much when I put him in his burrito wrap.

Good luck SAS and I do have the same problem with Max's "dew claws". The nails are so very thick and do tend to grow downward into his pad. He has an appt at the groomers next weekend but I'm not sure if they are equipped enough to handle that so I'm in the same boat you are tonight. Let's gather here later on and swap stories.

I hope that everything goes well.:) I just trimmed all 6 of my cats nails this afternoon and Sky was horrible. He's the sweetest cat but he doesn't like his paws touched so he'll hiss, growl, and even try to bite me. I have to put all of my cats in a cat sack and a home made cat muzzle also goes on Sky, Storm, and Starr to protect me from potential biting. I've also always had a hard time with trimming the dew claws.

Gosh, sorry for all the horrible spellings. I must have been tired. I even stated that the breeder asked me to breed her when I meant to say NOT breed her. Geesssseeeee.

So, here's what happened. I clipped 4 nails on the front part of Lucy, as she was fairly easy. I didn't want to have the other two see me struggling with Lucy, and then they would get goofy and run....so I stopped when Lucy started to fuss. Next was Chloe, the one with the bad toe. She is an easy catch, as she loves to be touched. So I grabbed her skinny little self, grabbed my sharpest sissors (regular clippers will not cut the nail because it is so wide and also thick) and went for it. It didn't hurt her, but I did manage to watch a wide section leave her toe. There is no blood anywhere so I can only assume she is fine. I will find her later today when the sun comes out and she is perched on one of the sunny spots...then check out her toe. I have many more toes to go one more time with the sissors with Chole. She is such a little love bug.....but never the less, hates to be held against her will!

All my pets are great at the vet, so the option is always taking them there to have their nails cut. I usually have it done when they do their annual visits.

I still have JuniRose (all nails) Lucy (back and dewclaws in front) and all the other nails for Chole. Gosh. :rolleyes: I hate it as much as they do! :eek: :p

Well done, Sallyanne! :) I can hardly remember what' it's like, not to be able to clip Fister's nails, although I still only can get 2-3 at a time. I lean over him from behind and cuddle for a bit, then have the scissors ready next to us, stroke him on the nose with it (he likes that) and start clipping.

I have got into the habit of holding his paws in my hand and give him a little toe massage when we're reading in bed, so he's used to me touching his paws.

The scissors I use, is one I bought at the vet, it was not expensive.

Good luck getting the rest of them shortened, and good luck to you too, Slick! :) Try to lean over him and stroke his chest for a bit, THEN grab the scissors and get on with it. :D

Oh Sallyanne I feel your pain.
Filou and Tigris never had their claws clipped and I cannot imagine how to survive such an action. Especially with Tigris' tempered steel knifes ;)
I had no idea little Chloe has a bad claw- the little girl seems so purrfect. Siegmar sends kisses to his favorite cat girlfriend ;)

Shortie Girl has one of "THOSE" claws that is really thick and difficult to clip. I use regular toe nail clippers and I clip it sideways because of it's thickness.

If your cat's nail is in the pad, you're gonna need to sets of hands to deal with it. Have one person totally hold her still then clip it. If it's imbedded into her pad, take a cottonball with hydrogen peroxide and dab it to stop the bleeding. If it's too bad, you may have to take her to the vet. Wish I was there, girl. I'd help ya out.
