View Full Version : Well, Duh! Headlines Recently

Lately there seems to have been a spate of headlines that state the completely and utterly obvious. Today there's a story on CNN, and the head you click to get to it is "Valentines Day Isn't Always Happy." - Duh!
And earlier this week was a headline "Alzheimer's Hard on Spouses, too."
What gives? Do we need news articles to tell us the patently obvious? Or should the editors writing the headlines be given a week of to recharge their collective brains?

Jay Leno has a segment on the Tonight Show called Headlines. Some of them are hilarious. I love the ones that he shows that have misspellings which, at times, can be really really funny!

I used to write headlines for the school newspaper.
A few things that you have to keep in mind to WRITE a good headline.
Space, type and story.
You have to know what the story is about, what the size of the type used in the headline and how much space that allows you.
Here's one from the recent NIU cmpus shootings.
CAMPUS KILLER POLITE.

Ha ha some of those are pretty funny. Maybe the writers are bored or just being ironic?

Yeah, the ones I posted about are just plain obvious- not even funny. It's like making a headline for "snow is cold." Well, yeah - by definition ... and it isn;t like it is a slow news period!
