View Full Version : Emily is REALLY sick, she is gone

Hi Everyone,

Well my namesake (Emily) is REALLY sick with a URI. We went to the vet on Friday and I had them give her an antibiotic injection and I got some pills to give her at home. But I also found out that she had lost 1.5 lbs (she was only 6.1 lbs to begin with). I have been force feeding her Max Cal mixed with a little water and the antibiotic pills. She has now had 3 pills and the injection and seems to be getting worse. When I fed her this morning she was walking with a wobble and she is not fighting me at all. Emily usually hates to be wrapped in a towel, but now she isn't even complaining. :(

She is in the master bedroom and I just ran a hot shower to steam up the room (and hopefully help her breathing). I also have a humdifier in there for her. Does anyone else have any other suggestions??? I am really worried about her :( :( :(

Can you take her back to the vet? Sounds like she needs to be admitted for inpatient care at this point. :(

Unfortunately my vet is closed on Sunday and the only emergency vets in this area will not keep her over night because they close when the other vet offices are open.

I agree, a vet visit is imperative.

Your cat needs to be hospitalized RIGHT NOW!!! URI's are nothing to play around with! Can you get her to the emergency vet and pick up her and take her to your vet on Monday???

I live very close to an emergency veterinary service that is open 24x7 every day of the year but when I asked them to keep a kitten with a severe URI they said he was still better off at home and they refused to take such infectious cats unless their lives were in immediate danger. So, your vets may refuse. My regular vet keeps infectious cats in their restroom (heated and large) to protect their other sick clients. From what I have been told over and over as I've dealt with URI's in many cats, there is nothing they would do beyond what you are doing now. She's actually better off in your home, frightening as it is for you, and I do empathise with you.

Did the vet take blood to find out why Emily has lost weight? My thought is that Emily has an underlying illness, such as early renal failure or hyperthyroidism, that has caused the weight loss and made her more vulnerable to infections.

Keep doing what you are doing, especially the force feeding even though it's very distressing and scary when they are mouth breathing. I've always used AD, is what you are using from the vet?

Have you tried baby food(chicken/turkey)they can smell that OR tuna fish, that really smells! How old is your cat?

I know for human, crumbling eucalyptus leaves into hot water makes a steam that helps them breathe ... eucalyptus is usully available in the florist department of supemarkets. She'll be in our prayers.

Well right now she is staying at the emergency vet's office for the night. Their recommendation was that I let her go to the RB. Unfortunately I couldn't do that without giving her a chance, so she is with them tonight. They will warm her up, re-hydrate her, and give her antibiotics. She does have early kidney failure, so when they did the blood work the levels came back very poorly.

Please say a prayer or two for her...

HUGS and PT Prayers for poor Emily!

Rehydration has worked miracles before on cats...and with EARLY renal trouble, I hope it will do the trick!

She can't be that old...I hope her usual good health will stand her in good stead.

Emily, come back and stay with your Meowmie...come back to love and health.
Creator, power of life, God, all that is right and whole, please embrace and heal one of your beautiful creatures, Emily.

i am soooo sorry for your poor baby being so sick.Do you think she'll be ok for an operation?Usually that's what they do when the URI is this bad...and usually as fast as possible.I'm saying when nothing else works.
Prayers are on the way for dear emily.

Oh no! You must be frantically worried and upset. It's amazing how much sub-q fluids can help cats; I have them on hand at home all the time and not just for the one CRF foster cat I have. If they can just pull her through the URI, the renal failure can be dealt with. I have a seriously ill CRF cat right now and just put her on Epogen injections which have obviously helped her already. Those, plus twice daily fluids and forced AD feedings have brought her back from near collapse.

I will be thinking positive thoughts for Emily.

Prayers for Emily. I am glad that she is staying at the emergency vets. At least you know they will monitor her all night and do what they can. You can have the peace of mind that she is being helped to the best of your ability.

In the morning, maybe your regular vet will have more suggestions. Maybe a different antibiotic.

Emily is only 7yo, so she is very young to have kidney failure and it was only diagnosed about a month a half ago so we are only in the early stages of things.

Right now she is on an IV drip with a heated solution and IV antibiotics, and she is in a heated cage.

I hope that the re-hydration will help and if she needs to continue it at home I can do that. She just needs to make it through the night... :(

But thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, I actually just got off the phone with the vet clinic. They said that she is resting comfortably. Her body temperature has started to increase (it was really low). Unfortunately her electrolytes are still really high, but they will check them again at 2AM.

Please keep her in your prayers this evening...

Well she made it through the night :D but she is not out the woods yet. I picked her up from the emergency vet this morning and brought her over to my regular vet.

She is still having great difficulty maintaining her body temperature but at least her kidney levels have dropped significantly. When the BUN was first measured yesterday afternoon, the machine could not do a reading that high (>130) but now she is down to 45 (the high normal is 34).

She is being kept in an incubator and on warmed IV fluids and antibiotics. They will re-test her later this afternoon to see how she is doing.

Your thoughts and prayers are working, but could I bother you to say another one for her today...

Emily - dear, dear Emily. The URI must have been very serious to cause this much sickness - her body couldn't even stay warm.

If there was bad news...at least it came from your regular vet, who knows Emily.

Everything possible was done for her; she was loved and knew it. And you were with her at the end - I pray it was peaceful.

And Mom Emily - you are loved here, and we are here for you.
