Some "revisions" to the MapQuest Directions & Routings

Every year they like to "adjust" things ... shift the number ranges on a street ...
change a routing ... or just change stuff for the heck of it! Grrrrr!

I'll reprint the previous How To - and change a few things to try to catch up
with MapQuest's 2008 changes. Believe it or not, the Dog Park hasn't moved -
but MapQuest would certainly make you think it moved!

How to Get MapQuest Directions TO the Findlay Bark Park
OK - Here's how to get your MapQuest "Directions" with Turn-by-Turn Instructions ...

Use the Click-Link (below) to get to the From and To page for MapQuest.
**WAIT** till the page fully loads - or you'll goof up the pre-filled data!!

When the page finishes loading - you'll have TWO big data blocks -
the one on the LEFT asking for your STARTING Location;
the one on the RIGHT >> Already FILLED IN < with the Dog Park Address.

If you have it - do NOT use Microsoft's "AutoFill" - it will put your home address
in BOTH blocks - erasing http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif the pre-filled Dog Park Address! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/mad.gif

JUST fill in your Home or "Starting" address in the LEFT (STARTING Location) Blocks.

The Dog Park is INside the Hancock Park District's "Riverbend Recreation Area";
about a half mile south of Ohio Route 568;
and just north of the North-East Corner of the big Findlay Reservoir.
The Reservoir is on most maps - and stands out because it is drawn as a
Big SQUARE Blue Lake; south-east of downtown Findlay.
If ANYONE has trouble with the Route to the Dog Park - PM "Cinder & Smoke"
with your E-mail and Home/Starting Address.

OK - so what changed?

* The street number changed from 16000 to 16500 - to make the
MapQuest "star" sit closer to the actual Dog Park on THIS year's map.

* The new MapQuest *LINK* uses the new 16500 street number.

* BE PREPARED: No matter where you're coming from, Map Quest will probably
show a different route for the last 10 - 15 miles - different from last year's route.
Use whatever you're comfortable with or remember ... there aren't ANY roads or bridges
that are closed ... and I've driven ALL the various routes that MapQuest can suggest.
NO route is really much better than another --- miles are about the same
and drive time isn't drastically altered.

what they show should match what I told you.

If you think your mapping program or GPS is really sending you around Robinhood's Barn -
send me a copy of the route and I'll look it over.

Okay now - I have the map of the Dog Park.
We're coming down I-75 from the north.
Which exit do I take off I-75?

1: Heading SOUTHbound on I-75 ...

2: Take the OH-12 exit, EXIT 157, toward FINDLAY / COLUMBUS GROVE. go 0.2 mi

3: Turn LEFT onto W MAIN CROSS ST / OH-12. (Towards downtown Findlay) Go 1.2 mi

4: Turn RIGHT onto OH-568 / S MAIN ST / I-75-BL. (Heading SOUTH in town)
... GO 0.1 mi and merge into the LEFT lane.

5: Turn LEFT onto E SANDUSKY ST / OH-568. Continue to follow OH-568.
... You leave town and drive WEST out into the Country; drive about 2.7 miles ...

**WATCH** for a little Fire Station on the right, followed by a fancy
"Hancock Parks / Riverbend Area" sign on the right >>>

6: Turn RIGHT onto TOWNSHIP ROAD 241. Drive across the Rickity Bridge to
the STOP Sign

7: Turn LEFT onto TOWNSHIP HWY 208. (Note the Riverbend Area sign)
.. Drive past the Ranger Station on the left
.. Follow the road through a Sharp 90* right turn and SLOW DOWN

8: Immediately turn RIGHT into the parking lot marked for "The Lodge"
along with a tiny sign for the Dog Park.

Pavilion #7 (Ours) is the first one on the right as you enter the parking lot.

I just arranged for my rental car and trying to hit "Mapquest" for best directions. DIL Jenny won't be able to come :( she and son are hitting NASCAR Dover the following weekend, then Pocanos then Dover again (I think) so nuff is nuff for her travelling I guess. I may be able to bring an old "co-pilot" buddy but if not I will be dogless too... all the more time to spend with Bon and the others (if KlamJuz doesn't arm wrassle me over Bon) :D Mary (MRuffRuff) are your grand-guests still on? I think you and I are staying at the same motel so I hope to see you Saturday!!! YIPPEE!!!!

Oh my gosh my golly... don't think so... I was under the wrong impression it seems (once again :rolleyes: ) I thunk I knew but have been corrected. Now I'm confuzzled as everyone else :eek: So what else is new? I thought KlamJuz was an extra dawg I could claim as mine at the motel but NO... drat. Glad to hear the weather appears to be improving. Let me ask something ~ I will probably know the dogs by sight but not all the two leggers ~ will we have name tags? Or is that too Kindergarden? :o Guess I'll figer it out by the end of the day :rolleyes:

I am sad to say we will not be able to come. Miss Hoppy has an upper respiratory infection that she has had for quite some time, and it is slowly getting better on two kinds of meds twice a day - which takes two of us, and we don't feel we could leave her alone for three days. She does not like car rides, so bringing her with us for a 13-hour ride would not be a good idea, we wouldn't want her to feel worse than she already does.

We were so looking forward to going, and especially meeting all the new people who will be coming, and seeing the friends we have met before once again, I was looking forward to baking the dog-safe and people-safe cookies and everything.

But Miss Hoppy will turn 11 years old sometime this week, and with her being sick, we just don't feel we could leave her alone.

(She hates the vet's office, and doesn't allow anyone but me to hold her without struggling, needs her meds twice a day, and her nose cleaned up - she doesn't use tissues like a human would - so boarding her with someone is not an option.)

Thanks guys. And if anyone doesn't know what to bring as far as food, and wants to, I could PM the recipe for the dog-safe but meant for people, too cookies I always bring! They are simple to make, I promise! I cannot PM you my dog-shaped or bunny-shaped cookie cutters, but they are tasty even as plain squares.

They keep really well, so you could make them a couple days ahead of time, and there'd be no difference in taste or texture. They do break easily, though, so a flat box is better than a ziplock for transport.

I'm sorry that I found this only a week or so before the date!!! Lol, but I'm so looking forward to seeing you all out there. I just started going to the dog park this year because of college and all. My dog's name is Honda, she's a dalmatian. I'm up for bringing anything you guys need! I tried joining earlier but I had to get activated and it took awhile, then I just didn't have time with school and everything. But I'm finally on!! Telling you guys that I will be there! LOL, as it is obvious, my name is Monica. I really hope it doesn't rain because then one side of the dog park turns into a LARGE puddle which the dogs cannot resist going into. Lol I'm so excited!!!

WELCOME, Monica and Honda, to both Pet Talk and the Sunday / Monday Gathurin! :)

Since we have Sooooo Much food already promised for Sunday ...
we can't possibly eat everything - even if we bring all the leftovers back for
Day 2 on Monday. ~~~ Should we maybe suggest that anyone who hasn't signed up
for a food item just SKIP IT (the food) and instead drop a couple bucks into the "Donation Can"
to pay for the Pavilion? Any "extra $$$" in the Can can go towards the
new Pet Talk Memorial Trees inside the Park.

Just a thought ... I hate to have folks *phuss* with nice food dishes and then be
upset because no one had room to try them all.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely love dalmatians. They're so sweet. Honda's a bit old, she's ten. And I have noticed her just recently not being able to move as well, but she's still got a little spunk in her. Lol :-D I'm excited to meet you all. All systems go for me and Mapquest to the Motel seems purty straightforward. Your prior directions (thanks Phred) seem A-OK as well from Motel to Pav #7. I'll just "listen for the BARKS". Use whatever you're comfortable with or remember ... there aren't ANY roads or bridges
that are closed ... and I've driven ALL the various routes that MapQuest can suggest.
NO route is really much better than another --- miles are about the same
and drive time isn't drastically altered.

what they show should match what I told you.

If you think your mapping program or GPS is really sending you around Robinhood's Barn -
send me a copy of the route and I'll look it over.

Phred - I brought up the new map in a new window, and compared it to the old one I had already printed out. They both get us to the end result, so we should be okay. And I have the directions that you gave me a few pages back. I also have cell phone numbers - yours and Staci's.

So we should be good to go.

Check your "Preferences" on MapQuest!
You can pick "shortest time" or "shortest distance". as well as "avoid toll roads".
The I-71 South to OH-30W then north on OH-23 & OH-15 is about 30 miles MORE in distance,
but SAVES almost 15 minutes in driving TIME. Then you need to figure in GAS mileage. :eek:

That northern / Turnpike route goes through a LOTTA lil hick towns with
much lower speed limits than the southern / all expressway route.

I'll just stick to the directions I've used the past few times. :D

Will that also include the "Senic double-loop through Norwalk" this year?

I got the oil changed on Monday, printed the directions off today, have promised Jonah new movies to watch on the long trip up, will pick up fruit on Saturday, and move on out on Sunday.

Just fyi: if you use google maps, (http://maps.google.com/) you can "drag" the route line provided to a different road if you want & it will rewrite the directions.

I sure wish we could be there too, but there's no way for Memorial Day. Liz is right about gas prices - we just went to VA for a graduation & the round trip gas bill was a whopper!:eek:

Will be looking forward to lots & lots of pictures (and one of the new memorial trees, please?). Drive safely & have a great time, everyone! :D

Regarding Angie's "MapQuest Mystery" on why they tried to send her on
the "southern route" rather than the Turnpike >>>

When you enter the Start and End locations, MQ pops up
with the DEFAULT Route - which is the "Shortest TIME" route;
to see the "Shortest DISTANCE" route you have to scroll over
to the far RIGHT side of the page to find the "Routing Options" column -
it about the same vertical height as the turn-by-turn directions are ...
First, there's check boxes to AVOID on the route:
* Highways
* Toll Roads
* Seasonally closed roads

THEN there are the Options you need to check --
Show route by:
* Shortest TIME
* Shortest DISTANCE

The default of Shortest TIME results in the "southern route" ....
If you click the "Shortest DISTANCE" and the 'Update Route' clicker ...
MQ will revise the route and put you on the shorter Distance route.

I *KNEW* there had to be a reason for the "southern" routing ...
it's "faster" by 10 minutes because it's all Interstate quality highways;
the Turnpike route is shorter (by 30 miles) but runs through a lot of small towns
and has lots of directional changes & turns ... takes 10 minutes longer to drive.

The Dogmobile is broke and broke good...it needs a new motor. It spun the front of the crank off, even the mechanic said he'd never seen that happen:eek:
So I thought we could bring the truck instead. Well, we were at Lowe's last night and something happened to it...it wouldn't start and ended up having to be towed home:rolleyes: No idea yet what's wrong with it.
So there was no way we could all come in the car (4 dogs and 2 people DO NOT fit in a car...not our dogs anyway...lol!)
I've been very aggravated and upset all day long:mad::(

Then....

Sometimes people can surprise you with their kindness.

A girl I work with knew how upset I was that I was going to miss our PT picnic that she offered to let me borrow her van for the weekend!
I was in shock. It's not every day someone you work with offers to let you borrow their vehicle.
We have worked together for 10+ years but it's not like we're best friends or anything.
It's one of the nicest things that anyone has done for me in a very, very long time.

"The Meadows" is a large area within Riverbend Park ...
the better landmark is "The Lodge" - the new "fancy" Pavilion which has
a larger sign than the Dawg Park.

The Hancock Parks District signs farther out point towards "Riverbend Park";
which includes The Meadows, The Lodge, and the Dawg Park.

Well, I guess I am the first to post from the meeting. What a beautiful day we had - great sunshine and not too high of a temperature, lots of Pet talkers, great food, lots of talk, new friends, and lots and lots of dogs! When we arrived Phred and Cinder and Smoke were already there as were Gretchen (Grace) and her husband (Douglas), Johanna and Jonah, and well, I am not too sure who else - they were the ones up at the food pavilion - unloading 8 dogs (yes, we took them all!) and 2 kids, 3 adults, cooler, food, cameras, - well it was a little crazy for awhile. Thank goodness, Gretchen and Douglas took Tucker off our hands because he was right away trying to cause trouble by jumping up and biting any dog that came near - even his own siblings and cousins.

Arrival and not in order were Angie and Sierra, Robin and Tori and Zack, Monica and Honda, Anna, Mark, Bon, Roxey and Huny, Mary, her two grandaughters, and her dogs, Scruff and ?, Kimmy, Andy, Chipper and Kia, Kimmy's sister and her husband and Sasha, Ashley and Jack, Laurie Baker and her friend, Gini, Staci and Keegan, Joyce and Peanut, Amy, Ralph and Sadie, Cincy, and Spot, Carrie and Gabby, and of course Christy, Jasmine, Dominic, Dakota, Destiny and Sierra, and of course, Clamjuice also known as ..................................are your ready........................... are you sure you want to know..............................Slick!!!! from Canada - what a surprise and nice one at that! Just wanted to check in and say that I made it home. I'm wore out, Tori and Zack are wore out and Miss Katie is ready to play. Poor girl was home alone all day and is happy to see us.

I had a great time and was happy to see my old friends and thrilled to meet new friends in person. What a wonderful surprise to see Slick and Gini there.

well I'm home and showered and ready to fall over - I told ZIPPIE I wasn't going to get online but needed to email Joyce so I did.
what a WONDERFUL day -
I knew that Clamjuz was Slick - I flat out asked her awhile ago and she couldn't lie to me but that didn't stop me from telling a few white lies along the way - and then a few weeks ago while I was on the phone with my WEST COAST PET TALK MOM - she couldn't stand it anymore (like a kid in a candy store ;)) she says I'M COMING! I can't begin to tell you how friggin excited I was. I didn't know if I would get to see Gini again for years! But I was sworn to secrecy so I of course only told one person - who I CAN NOT keep secrets from!!! *ZIPPIE* ;) :D
Slick, Gini and I were able to go out to dinner last nite in Findlay and surprise Laurie and Mary at dinner :)
EVERYONE were very shocked to see GINI and SLICK BOTH there. And surprised I was able to keep the secret as well!!!

I finally left the park @ 10:10pm :)
it was a LONG TIRING DAY.

Oh man what a day! And how exciting...Slick, our first international Pet Talker at Findlay! I have to say I did know it was her, but didn't know the second half of the surprise...our very own California Gini was there:D

I must say I had a WONDERFUL time and was so glad that we had a loaner dogmobile so we could ALL enjoy the day.
Even Bon got lots and lots of love and doggie treats (mostly coming from Gini and Slick:p) I want to personally thank them both for showing Bon so much attention and taking him for walks. He really enjoyed himself.

The group photo was pretty hard to get with so many people, so here's the best one I got along with a cute picture of Slick spending some one on one time with Bon and one of the surprise girls!

I didn't get many pictures but I'll post the ones I did get later after some much needed rest.

Great pictures. Thanks for posting pictures last night, Diana. I did check it out before I went to bed, and was happy to have gotten a glimpse into the fun of the day. You know, I thought it was Slick, but then she posted somewhere (maybe Miss Hoppy's thread?) after she left so I decided it wasn't her. :o And when you said Gini, I didn't know you meant our Gini.

Anna, thank you sooo much for getting a group shot. It sure looks like a great group of people. I cannot wait to see everyone else's pictures as they get home, up and uploaded. We will be able to enjoy this meeting all week as more and more pictures and stories are posted. :D

Sigh, I really want to go some year, but driving 550 miles on unfamiliar roads on a holiday weekend has stopped me every year. :o Some day I will do it.

i'm sitting next to johanna and jonah, i'm wearing the dark sunglasses and holding peanut, (she was behind the standing katie, i think ); peanut had been rolling in the watery mud near the dogs swimming pool, and was very damp. she was ecstatically happy! we were sitting next to mary(lovely lady) with white hair, in front of carl the grillmaster (and we ate well!).
peanut is still sleeping. she ran and ran and ran, chasing and tumbling and doing a little coyote face with sierra (and i'm sorry for her bad manners angie).and staci, my glasses were on the kitchen counter when i got home, so i can see today! thanks for checking

Woo-hoo, looks like a GREAT pic-nic! Gosh, a lot of new PT faces there this time. Hey, bringing that tent-shade was a a good idea. The little kids are all adorable, definitely the way to get the "next generation" of PTers into the pic- nic tradition. Nice to see many of our old friends there too- we miss all of you. I think the only one we have left to identify is Kimmie's sister - the one between Kimmie and Andy in a striped shirt. My mind is failing me (but when does it not?) as to her sister's name. She has a dog named Sasha. Grace and Gretchen (Grace) are from Michigan and have all cats (I'm thinking 6) and were a big help to me right away when I had the leashes of Tucker, and 3 others I think. At one point they had me so wrapped up, I couldn't move without falling over. Being the sweetheart he is, Tucker was jumping up and biting every dog's neck within reach - mine are used to it but were gettting a little irritated but I think Douglas rescued Tucker from getting sat on by Keegan who was a little more than annoyed at Tucker. I was very glad to meet such a nice couple and really hope they do come more often to our meetings.

Johanna and Jonah were a real gift to us because they entertained the grandchildren who would have never lasted as long as they did without Jonah to interest them. Also Johanna thought further than we did by bringing things for them to do in the shelter. But then again we never get to spend much time in the shelter with 8 dogs there.

Today was a much smaller group. Phred with Cinder and Smoke, Staci with Keegan, Ashley with Jack, Kimmie, Andy, Kimmie's sister and husband, Kia, Chipper and Sasha, Slick, Gini, Laura and Wally Baker, Carl, me, Tucker, Dazzi, Taggert and Pippi. We still had enough food left so again no one went hungry. The dogs again had a great time and of course, so did we all. I took some pictures but didn't get them uploaded. Came home and took a nap. Boy am I tired!

I am finally getting on for the first time since getting home last evening. We got to the park around 12:30 and stayed until 6:30. We came home, changed clothes and were off to another party, which we got home from about 1:30am. Unfortunately, while we were gone the neighborhood kids must have been setting off fireworks, and someone (we are guessing Spot), tried to chew his way out of the kitchen. So it is back to kennels it is...Then we had a power surge yesterday, and knocked the computer out, which reset the modem and wouldn't let is connect. ....but anyway!

Yesterday was a great day!! The weather was gorgous and it was so nice to se so many old friends and meet many new friends!! I was shocked when we first got there and Gini came up to say hi! It tok me a minute to register, even though I met her a few years ago becuase I wasn't expecting her to be there! Then I saw Slick coming out the dog area and thought...that can't be Slick! I was wrong!! What great surprises!!!

We had hope to make it back today, but so much to do here.
I have not uploaded pictures yet, but will try to get them up yet tonight although I also need to get packing, as I'm headed to Boston tomorrow morning.

Sierra and I had a good 3 hour ride home, she kept fighting falling asleep for some reason and as soon as I turned down our street the Howling and crying started and didn't stop till she was with her Buddy again! :rolleyes:

We made it back to Williamston around 9:30 tonight. Ashley is on her way to her parents and then heading back up to school. She'll call me when she gets in and I'll post that she's safe. :D

Well, here I am in Dayton, OH.

I just saw the shuttle pull away and on the way to the airport....carrying Gini. If all goes well, she should be home by dinnertime.

My shuttle to the airport leaves in about an hour. I'm sad and I'm happy. It's been a wonderful trip....one that I'll never regret.

Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome and it was so nice to meet all of you. I did get some pictures but I'm sure they aren't as nice as the ones already posted.

I won't get home until late so will post more tomorrow.

Boy, what a fantastic Picnic:D

We arrived home at 8PM last night, all of us totally tuckered out. No one had trouble sleeping!

The cats were glad to see us--seems the sitter forgot to give them water!!!

I really appreciate the efforts of the people who arranged the picnic. A special "Thank you" goes to Phred and Staci. We all are grateful to Paul and Karen who started this site.

It was great to meet so many more Pet Talkers. I hope I can remember who's who:rolleyes:

Gini and Slick were a wonderful surprise. I hope their trips home are uneventful. Maybe they will come back again next year.

I didn't take any pictures, but I certainly am enjoying all of yours.

Unfortunately I actually have to do some work today, but I'll surely find time to look at all the pictures I can.

It was a truly unforgetable week end.

Incredibly wonderful time. Best cuppala days in ages! Wally & I (he's a buddy, not a hubby or sig other) made it back to Maryland HOURS after leaving the Park about 2 pm on Monday, it took about 9 hours but encounted some bad storms along the way. Looooong day but wouldn't have missed a second of it. My 4 dawgs were fasinated by the way we smelled walking in the door... bratwurst, burgers, a special mixed stew type thing Mary concocted (wow Mary... please send the recipe) and smells of DAWGS, DAWGS, DAWG DROOL (mostly thanks to Bon :D) and assorted others. Punk, Rascal, Mary, Lucy and Poon want to give special thanks to Auntie Slick for the care package of home made treats. Milky bones will never be the same :D :rolleyes: Thanks to all and especially to our Dawg Godfather Phred for all his efforts :)

I'm an old *Shrimper* frum way back! (At least 5 years or so. :p )

I'd starved myself for the annual Fire Dept Christmas Dinner ...
tummy was *rumblin* for hours ...

Snowed like it was the Last Blizard befoe the End ...
Dinner was LATE arriving.

And the ONLY thing in the Station was the early arriving Shrimp Plates!
< Deep Breath > and LOTS of "Cocktail Sauce" helped 'em go down;
a beer chaser kept 'em there ...

Only took me about a half a dozen to notice everyone ELSE had lil TAILS left onna plate ...
My Plate had no TAILS ... was I doing sumpin wrong? :confused:

I suddenly discovered the Lil Dead Phish didn't taste nearly so vile iffin ya didn't eat the TAILS!
Trial & Error (and some careful observing) taught me where the dividing line was between
the edible part and the Tail ... another Beer and I was ready to go for another plateful.

So YES, I can do "Shrimp" if hungry enough or have a need to be "polite" ...
I just thought I'd sharpen my Shrimpin Skills on Sunday.
(Thank Heaven for KetchUp! I was gonna try BBQ Sauce, too; but ran outa room.)

Severe storms in Dallas delayed the flight out of Dayton - and when I finally got to Dallas it was another long (and many gate changes later)

I was five hours late getting home - but I am here and very tired -

JoJoe & I want to especially thank Phred, for all the work he did to arrange for the PT Memorial trees. We sponsored one of them, to honor the memory of our Sherman. I noticed Phred's description is that it is the most northerly of the trees, which seems appropriate for our husky boy. So, with a little help from Photoshop... almost like he was there-

Mark and I really did have a great time and so did the dogs. They were still wore out yesterday...lol!

I've loved looking at all the pictures, but I've noticed there are a considerable less amount of pictures than usual. I think we all just had so much to do and to talk about to take any pictures:D

Well ...

We have "tried" to hold a Findlay 4th Gathurin in years gone by ...

And for the most part they turned into a *bust* with poor attendance,
mostly due to "Family Commitments" that couldn't be avoided.
We've had to last-minute Cancel the Pavilion more than once. :(

As for the Canadian Neighbors ... they have a hard time getting to Findlay -
there aren't too many of them living a "comfortable drive" away from Findlay.

Is anyone interested in a July Gathurin at Findlay ???

Is anyone interested in a July Gathurin at Findlay ???
I'll check with the family and in-laws to see if anything is going on. As of right now, our calendar is free.

Kia's birthday is June 29th, but I think I'm going to have to work the weekend of her special day. Don't think she'd mind if we celebrated it later. ;) :D

i am very interested. i came back and raved about how much fun we had. we'd be there on friday the 4th or saturday the 5th, possibly early(leaving by 3pm) on the 6th. can you sense i'm a bit...eager:D

Well, I've been struggling for days to get my pictures posted. I've battled with Shutterfly and Photobucket. I think I just figured out what I was doing wrong. Photobucket is definitely better than Shutterfly. I'll have to figure out how to get my albums moved over, if it's at all possible.
