It is now close to two years that Filou has chronic kidney failure. However he did well with the weekly sub-q fluids and diet food.
Since before Christmas however he has been losing weight- it's close to a pound now and he only had seven of them. Of course we bought the most delicious food. The vet says he can have everything- even if it should not be diet as he is using his own protein which is just as bad for the kidneys :(.
Filou always needed his teeth cleaned as he builds a lot of tartar. The vet was reluctant to do it again as the anesthetics that are needed leave his body also via kidneys and put some further strain on them. But today on his weekly visit she says she cannot any longer postpone it as she thinks he might be even in pain. And of course if that should be the case he will not like his food as much.
He has been very active and playful over Christmas- so this is a good sign. They both liked that we have been home more and Filou gives lots of kitty kisses and headbumpies.
But for tomorrow my little boy is scheduled for a tooth cleaning under anesthetics and of course the vet will take the opportunity and take blood for some more tests.
Let's hope this will lead to things improving for a while. Think of us tomorrow.

I'm so sorry to hear Filou has lost weight, and also that a teeth cleaning is neccesary. :( Is it possible to give him a tranquilizer instead - or if not, a lower dose of anesthetics?
Oh, I so hope it goes smoothly and he'll be back feeling good and eating more!
It's good to hear he's been active and playing. :)
Will be sending lots of positive vibes for him tomorrow. Give him some kisses and scritches from us.

Barbara, my thoughts will be with you and Filou. Your little boy needs to hang on to those pounds and I wish him all the best with his teeth cleaning.
The girls will have all their paws crossed too.

My Puddy has been in CRF for years now and has had subQ fluids up to twice a day at one point and she had to have a teeth cleaning not too long ago and, of course, like you, I was really concerned. Pud is only 5 lbs. soaking wet and she lost 1 1/2 lbs. when she was really sick. She came through the teeth cleaning like a champ and we're going to pray that Filou (and you :) ) will, too. I really turned it over and over in my mind about having it done; the last time she ended up having 6 teeth pulled. (But that was before I met my current vet. He does everything he can to save the teeth.) A special candle is being lit for Filou and we'll wait to hear the good news. :)

OK- good news and strange news:
Filou is back, has eaten, sleeps and has clean toofies.
The strange thing: his kidney levels - the urea and the creatinine have improved substantially!
But- he is anaemic now.
Before X-mas we have tried some homeopathic meds- but we had the impression they made him eat less so we stopped it. But they may have been done something for the kidneys.
But the anaemia is worrying.
More bloodwork is to be done and I keep you updated.
Thank you so much for your support and comfort- it means so much to all of us.

Oh, I'm so happy to hear Filou is back home with clean teeth, and that his kidney levels, urea and creatinine is better. :) However, I'm sorry to hear about his anaemia. Did your vet suggest a special diet for this?
I suppose you'll have to wait for further tests - and I hope they will be good! Sending positive thoughts.
Filou, you are a brave boy - now get some rest and hopefully, you'll be eating lots tomorrow. :)
Kisses and scritchies from us.

Well that's odd! Is it possible that Filou could be anaemic because he has not been eating much?
Anyway, sending good wishes for our cute boy. Hope the further bloodwork gives good results.

Well, I would say mostly GREAT news. Hopefully the anemia can be explained, or if not, just regulated.
Glad the dental went well.....I was not really worried. ;)

Good news, bad news scenario but mostly good news. I'm glad he's doing well after the teeth cleaning. I knew he would. We'll keep the prayers going that Filou improves each and every day and that the anemia is just a blip on the radar screen.

Filou will feel much better with the clean teeth, I am glad it went OK. Hopefully the vets will find out why he has anaemia. Please Filou, eat well all the good food meowmie gives you, it will help ;)
Barbara

The vet called this morning: the big bloodwork showed that it is not exactly anemia- his levels are at the lower end of normal.
She will think about medication. (Hopefully no pills because this frail 6 lb bundle of energy is ab-so-lute-ly unpillable - you are always afraid you could hurt him and he takes advantage of that.)
Now it's all about gaining weight- Filou is allowed to have as much cream and even carbs (which usually are too high in most industry brands of cat food) as he wants. Only the protein should be controlled. Just opposite to what I should eat
After all a much better outcome than I expected.
Thanks for your help :)

I'm glad to hear that he doesn't have anemia and I hope that you'll be able to get him to gain some weight back. If the medicine does come in a pill, have you ever tried pill pockets? They sure work for my Storm. Good luck.:)
