I have two German Shepherd's. MY male Blaze is 13 years old, and my female Cyndee is 5 years old. Both really shed quite a bit despite my brushing them at least once a week. Does anyone have any solutions as to what I can use on their coats to keep the fur from flying.

I live in Michigan, not sure if that bit of information is beneficial in solving this .

Thank you

Hello Deann, and welcome to PT!
I had short haired pups in the past, and they seemed to drop fur year round. Just MORE of it in Springtime. So I don't have any answers, but just wanted to welcome you.

In some dog show homes, people use an attachment to vacuum their dogs. Of course you don't want to shampoo too much but shampoo and massage can help loosen hair faster.

Low thyroid levels can also result in extra loss of hair. If you get your dogs tested, turn out to be low, and if they are put on thyroid meds -- they may hang onto their hair better.

Sometimes a different food may help improve the coat.

I find that dogs of shedding breeds which are primarily indoor dogs, may have confused hair dormancy cycles and may tend to shed more, year around, due to the unnatural length of daylight in the house. Chickens for example, can be kept laying late into the fall if the chicken coop has a night light in it.

Just some ideas.
