I went to the Shiloh Shepherd web site and there were pictures of dogs with plush and smooth coats. Whats the difference? Some of the dogs had tufts of hair on their ears and some looked like they had a thicker coat but I can't tell which is which. Does anyone out there own a Shiloh Shepherd? Are they like German Shepherds but just bigger? They sound like geat dogs!

I've been following the development of the Shiloh Shepherd breed since their early beginnings in the 70's. Lately, I haven't keep up with them. I finally saw some at that Rare Breed dog show I attended a few years ago. They are beautiful. They started off as large German Shepherd Dogs selectively bred for great size. In the 80's, they added some Malamute blood in their line to increase the size. Their originator is Tina Barber.
The plush coat has a lion mane and the smooth coat is like the German Shepherd Dog. The website www.shilohshepherds.net (http://www.shilohshepherds.net) will give you a lot of info with it's links.

I think they are a different breed, not positive. Difference between the plush and smooth coats, just like a Rough and Smooth Collie. Same dog, different coat.

The website was helpfull. I live in Maryland.
It sounds like there are two different Shiloh Shepherd clubs and registries and they are against each other and don't get along. Is there a website with a scedule of rare breed shows or dogs shows? I'd like to see if there are any in my area.
