:( Boof has been acting weird the paste couple of days. he cant blink his left eye, he drools and just yesterday he has started having trouble eating. we have to put eye drops in his eye every couple of hours so he doesnt do any damage to the cornea. he has an appointment with the vet today in about 3 hours. i am worried for him. i looked it up on the net and i think he has a problem with his molars. that can also cause the eye problems. he will probably need an x ray today and then get his teeth filed down. he would have to go under a general anesthetic. hopefully we have caught it early, otherwise there could be an infection caused by the problem teeth and that brings a who lot more problems!!!

Boof (and I) could use your thoughts and prayers during this time.

thanks.

oh, and if you dont know boof, here are a couple of pics.

well i just came back from the vet. they shoved a thermometer up his butt  . poor little guy. his temp was good so no infection. he put this dye in his eye that changes from orange to green if something is wrong, but that was fine, it also drained out his nose, so his tear ducts are not blocked. he doesn't think it is the teeth cause he didn't seem to be in pain. boof has a fat lump next to his ear that may be pushing on the nerve that controls blinking. he referred us to a rabbit specialist. he also stuck a needle in the fat lump to see if it was an abcess or something, but no fluid came out. anywayz it doesn't seem to serious just yet, hopefully the other vet will be able to give us some answers. i will keep you updated.

Well we found a rabbit specialist place that we are taking Boof to on Saturday. They said to just watch him for the next week, and if anything major happens we can bring him in earlier. Boof is still in good spirits though. Thanks everyone for your concern. i am really touched.

Hi Sarah and dear Boof,
Boof I have been thinking about you all day. I sat upstairs and held Benny in my arms and told him all about you Boof.
When Snowy died Benny wouldn't eat, not even parsley and dandilions. I took him to the vet and got two meds. One to increase his eating and the second to force feed him with. Luckly after two and a half weeks he decided to eat again. He missed his Snowy so much.
I went to the store and bought Benny all his favorties and had to hand feed him. It was worth it to see him well. Be patient and do watch that his poops are round, and plump not dried and tiny. He should also be eating his hay. Good luck, keep us posted. Hugs and kisses on that sweet nose Buff. My prayers are with you.

thanks again everyone. boof is pooping alright, but he is starting to have a little trouble eating. he cant pick things up in his mouth properly. like his fa choc drops. if we put them on the floor he cant pick them up. we have to hold them for him while he eats them. he is still acting chirpy though, which is good.

I thought you might like an update even though he hasn't seen the specialist yet. Boof is having a bit of trouble eating, but it doesn't stop him trying. Last night my mum was panicing. She came to get me, she had fed boof a cherry from our christmas food, but didn't expect boof to eat the seed, which he did. It must have got stuck in his back molars, cause we could hear it crunching, but he couldn't get it out. mum had been giving him choc drops, he ate them, but the pip was still in there. i had the idea to give him grass, because the only foods that use the back molars to eat is hay and grass, for any other foods rabbits mainly use there front teeth. anyway, it worked, about 5 minutes later it came out, and i grabbed it quickly and threw it out. phew.. that was a scary christmas night.

Anywayz..... when we were having christmas dinner, we started looking for boof, and this is where we found him. so cute.

OK this is the last update for about 2 weeks. I am going camping.

We took Boof to the rabbit specialist and she was great! She really knew her stuff. It took an hour to drive there, but it was worth it. Our usual vet said Boof looked fine to him, but if we thought he was acting strange to go to this lady. I am so glad we did.

Apparentely the supposed fat lump it actually an abscess!!! :O The lady said when rabbits have abscesses, the pus is so thick that nothing comes out when you try suck out anything with an injection. That is why the other vet thought it was a fat lump.

Even though the other vet checked Boof's ears, this lady did, and then shoved her finger down his left ear and pulled out a massive long hard cone of wax. poor little boof. it was about the size of birthday cake candles. It was from the abscess.

Apparentely the drooling and weird eating is because the abscess is pressing against his facial nerves and the left side of his tongue, eye and mouth are numb. The rabbit specialist said the abscess will hopefully go down. If it doesn't he might have to get it cut out. The feeling in the left side of boof's face may or may not come back. If it doesn't, he will have to get his teeth constantly filed down because he will mainly chew with the right side. So can you guys please pray for the feeling to come back.

The abscess has caused a middle ear infection and that is why he gets so dizzy and falls over when scratching or begging.

Anyway, boof has to talk an antibiotic (that smells like coconut) and an anti-inflammatory.

Also, the dry skin boof has between the shoulder blades that the other vet said was a skin condition is actually caused by some kind of mites in the hay. The other vet had given us quartazone for. This lady said never give rabbits quartazone as it lowers their immune system. She gave us revolution for him.

My mum also mentioned before gets diarrhea every now and then, and she said Boof was a little overweight, and gets too much pellets. She said pellets cause diarrhea in rabbits. we have to wean him off it and replace it with plain hay. Boof is not gonna like it, he loves the pellets.

We also bought a slicker brush for boof's fur because it gets a little matted near his butt. The vet said he needs to be brushed everyday, especially when he is shedding. We used to have a problem with the other brushes we used, but this slicker brush is great.

In summary, boof should start to perk up in about 3 days. We will have to deal with any complications after that. He is going back to the rabbit specialist in 2 weeks.

Thanks for your continued support. If you have a similar problem, and would like to know the names of the antibiotic and anti inflammatory, just message me.

Poor Boof has been through so much these past couple of weeks. Oh and Monica, Boof want to say hello to you and Benny. I told him that Benny was going through a tough time too. lol.

Well thank goodness you went to the specialist! Boof will be in our prayers for a quick recovery. Nasty abscess! Icky, icky! Hey, Miss Hoppy recommends fresh parsley in addition to the hay ... it is much yummier, and a healthy alternative to pellets.

Dear Sarah,

How wonderful that you were able to take sweet Boof to such a informed and caring specilist. The news about the wax in his ears is so amazing. Poor Boof not able to say anything. I am glad Boof is on the mend and my prayers are with you sweet Boofy Boy for a full recovery. Benny too enjoys his pellets but he only gets about 1/8 of a cup a day. He has fresh hay in four different places in his room. Benny does not pee in his hay. He uses the litter box always. I go to the store and buy Benny fresh greens every other day. I am very fortunte that I have a wonderful store 5 minutes from my home that has fresh parsley, carrots with tops, dandilions, baby lettuce and many other bunny foods available year round. I know not everyone does.
Boof you look so cute under the tree, I just want to pick you up and kiss that sweet face several million times. Much love to you Boof, Benny & Monica

Blue Dragonfly
01-11-2008, 01:14 AM
i dont know if you would want to kiss is face at the moment. lol. he is drooling and some of the infection is coming out of his nose. Anyway, Boof is going to the specialist again tomorrow, so we will find out how he is doing then. My mum pulled out a big clump of dried puss stuf from his ear today, hopefully it means the abcess is draining. What i am really worried about at the moment is his teeth. because he only chews on one side of his mouth now, his teeth are going weird. The front ones can be filed, but i have a feeling he may need the back teeth pulled out from that one side because to file the back teeth, you have to put the rabbit under, and doing that on a regular basis would be really dangerous, not to mention stressful for poor little boofy. Again, i just have to see what the vet says tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

i was just cleaning a bit of puss out of boof's ear about 5 minutes ago and my hand touched the abcess spot. More puss started coming out of his ear, so i pressed harder and got as much as i could out. now the big lump is gone!!! it is only tiny though, but i dont wanna push it too hard cause it might hurt him. i think the fact that his abcess just drained is a good thing. it has been there for over a year cause our other vet said it was just a fat lump. the stuff that came out was disgusting, and smelt really bad, but hopefully now boof will feel a bit better.

ok well the specialist said even though the abcess is draining, it will just keep coming back. boof is having an operation to remove it on tuesday. Scary! :( While he is under he is gonna have his teeth filed as well as the vet checking his jaw. he is also getting 5 xrays and just had a blood test yesterday. rabbit veins are very fine, so it is difficult to find one to take blood from. They had to shave around one of the back legs, then the other cause they couldn't get a vein from the first one. he had to wear banages on his legs until night time. Poor boofy is so miserable.

Boof is ok for the moment. he is still on antibiotics, we are just trying to decide whether to get an operation for him to remove his middle ear, or to just keep him on permanent antibiotics. it depends on how he goes in the next couple of weeks. We are also worried cause the operation can be quite dangerous. we are just weighing out the pros and cons. Any suggestion you can give me would be great. i am just so torn with this question. Argh! i need advice!

Good News! Boof may not have to have the operation. He has been improving a little on the antibiotics, and in two weeks we have to take him back to the specialist and learn how to give him penicillin injections. He will have to have one injection a week for the rest of his life. The injections are so much cheaper than what he is on now. it is $30-$40 for a bottle, and that lasts 12- 16 monthes. Thanks again everyone, the specialist thought he would really need the operation, but when we brought him in yesterday, she was really surprised by his improvement. Your prayers must be helping. :D Boof has even learnt how to use his half numb tongue so that he doesn't chew on it any more. The vet wasn't expecting that. I am so happy!!!

well a bit of good news. boof's teeth are wearing down evenly again, and he is starting to be able to blink the bad eye. I think the numb side of his face is getting feeling again. This was not supposed to happen because his infection was so severe. I can't wait until the rabbit specialist sees him. She will be so amazed! there is no other way to explain it, it is really a miracle. thanks to everyone here for your thoughts and prayers. boof is not completely out of the woods, but he is slowly getting there. he is a fighter.

Poor Boof was getting better, and then a couple of days ago his numb eye started puffing up and pus stuff started coming out of it. We kept cleaning it up, but every few hours the pus would seal the whole eye shut. We brought him to the rabbit specialist today. She said his tear duct was blocked. she put some anesthetic in his eye, and flushed out his tear duct. A whole bunch of pus came out his nose. lol. She gave as some eye drops to give him, and we have to ring her on tuesday to tell her how he is going. Poor Boofy boy.

Well Boof's attitude has gotten better since he got his eye flushed. He is hopping around a bit more instead of hiding in the corner. His eye is still a bit weepy though. Hopefully the eye drops will clear that up, otherwise the rabbit specialist may have to teach us how to flush boof's tear ducts himself.

Blue Dragonfly
03-22-2008, 06:55 AM
Well Boof's eye is completely better now, but we are still supposed to give him the eye drops until the vet says to stop.

Yesterday we had another problem with Boof. He was running around the backyard with us, and when we brought him back inside, we noticed he had a limp. His right back leg seemed to be bothering him, because he had tucked it under his body and kept falling over when he walked. I checked his leg for ages, but couldn't find anything obvious that was wrong with it.

This morning his foot seemed a lot better. he still has a slight limp though. i am going to keep an eye on it. Maybe he pulled a muscle or something.

Poor boof has been running into a lot of medical problems lately. The way he is going, the vet will think we are bahing him up or something. lol. Argh! Boofy, i wish he would just stay healthy. I feel like i should wrap him in bubble wrap so he doesn't get hurt any more. My poor baby.
