Late one afternoon about a week ago my 6 year old daughter ran to me and said that Luna, our 9 month old lynx point siamese, was choking. When I got to the cat she seemed fine. My daughter said that she thought that the cat had swallowed a fishing pole from one of her toys (the little plastic fish are in a circle, their mouths open and close, you try to drop the tip of the pole in their mouth and pull them out.....). Well, frankly I didn't believe her story. At about 9 that night, Luna gave a piteous meow and then made this awful resonant horking noise and brought up some bile. uh-oh.

Fast forward about 11 hours later. Luna has been horking up bile all over the place, maybe 8 to 12 times total. I assume that this is what my daughter had witnessed the day before. Hairball? I take her into the vet ASAP. The vet is rightfully sceptical of the fishing pole story, but keeps Luna overnight for observation, antibiotics, and pepcid.

Fast forward 24 hours later. The vet calls- Luna hasn't vomited at all, we can come pick her up. She seems perfectly normal- eating, playing, etc.

Fast forward 7 days. LUNA POOPS OUT THE FISHING POLE!!!!!!
Its a good thing that cats have 9 lives, because she certainly just used one of hers. Lesson for the day- listen to your kids! (Lesson #2- put all small toys where the cat can't find them!)

Yes, this is a picture of the fishing pole. The pen is there for size comparison. Also a picture of the lovely Luna, getting her beauty sleep.

Wow how scary!!! I'm so glad that she was able to get it out of her body like that and I'm glad that she's doing well now. She sure is a cutie pie.

My Pearl ate part of a red elastic string from a toy that my mom gave to me. I didn't even notice it until she pooped it out and I thought that she was bleeding at first. This could've wrapped around her intestines and killed her. I'm so lucky and so is she. I threw the whole toy away after that. You can never be too careful with animals.

A long time ago there was a PT'er who posted a story about her cat eating her bra strap. She even had a picture of it after it was taken out of the cat. The cat had to have an operation to remove the bra strap and it was quite long.

You would think felines would have more discriminating tastes according to pet food commercials showing how finicky they are. Years ago when my son was a radio DJ, he wore a penis earring w/a condom on it to promote Safe Sex Day. (I stayed indoors and didn't answer the phone. LOL) He took it off at the end of the day, later discovered that it was missing. Turns out my RB Peeka swallowed it. I immediately called my vet and he said "Don't worry. Your cat will pass the penis." Words you hear every day, right? Honestly, it's like having kids sometimes! Glad to hear Luna is ok. :)
