View Full Version : Miss Honey has been sick :(

I thought I'd best check in and let you know what is going on. I think I frightened quite a few people this morning when I went to post at For the Love of Dogs to just say good morning.

Helen called me to come quick because Honey had white foam all around her mouth. Then we saw that she had thrown up pile after pile of white foam all over the kitchen, den and out on the deck. :( And she went and laid in the corner with her head facing the wall. My Honey doesn't do that.

You know me well enough by now to know that any sign of sickness with my animals sends me reeling. I went ahead and called Patsy on her cell phone right after I had made that post and she told me to bring her right over. We feared that she had gotten into something toxic.

Honey did not get sick anymore while we were riding or when we got to Dr. Robinson's office.

Her temperature is normal. Her heart rate is normal. And Patsy said her lungs sound clear and her heart sounds good, too. But, she looked in her throat and it is raw and phlegmy (sp?). There is no way to know if the throwing up caused that or if she threw up because of that. I think I counted 9 piles of that white foam in the house and outside. Dr. Robinson wasn't there yet, but I trust Patsy, completely, since she is his right hand lady.

Patsy asked me to leave her with them so that Dr. Robinson can check her over and they can watch her this morning, and they put her up at the front desk area so she didn't have to go in a cage. She did look at me very sadly when I walked out the door, not liking the fact that I was leaving at all. Poor little girl was confused, but I'll feel better knowing that they are watching her while I work, instead of leaving her at home. Her guardian angels, Lilly and Zipper , are watching over her from their spots of honor on the wall behind that desk, where both of them spent so much time when they were sick.

They are supposed to call me after a while, so I'll check in as soon as I can.

I was already on edge this morning because Helen and I couldn't find Butter anywhere. I knew he came inside last night, but there was no sign of him anywhere. Usually he is in our faces, first thing in the morning, wanting to eat and go outside. I was about to freak out about that when we realized that Honey was so sick. I started calling him inside and outside as soon as I came in from the vet, all the while just knowing I was going to find him dead somewhere in the yard, a victim of a coyote attack. I know, I'm paranoid. When I came back in the house, not finding him, I heard his little bell and he was strolling down the stairs looking at me like I was crazy and wondering why in the world I disturbed his slumber. :p We have had a long talk about scaring Mama unnecessarily.

I think I need to go back to bed and start this day over!

I am not as scared as I was earlier, but I will be on edge until they call me. I'll let you guys know when I know what is going on.

I edited my title because it wasn't her tummy after all!

Prayers to Honey! Hopefully she just ate a wee something that disagreed with her!

And Butter - don't scare Meowmy like that when your canine sister is ill, ok? :)

Looking forward to a good update!

I just spoke with Patsy and she says Honey is doing great. Has not been sick again at all. They have given her a couple of injections, but I don't know what. Dr. Robinson is going to finish surgery and examine her carefully. I will go by there mid afternoon to talk with him and pick her up.

I think we've probably dodged a bullet and I couldn't be happier.

Thank you again for your prayers. I'll check in later once I have talked with him.

  Little piles of foam sent me reeling! Whitney, my black standard poodle, passed away from bloat and all that was in evidence when I returned from work that evening were several piles of foam. This is a very common finding with bloat. They try to throw up and can't. Thank God you were able to get her to your vet where she could be observed. I left a healthy dog in the morning and came home to a dead one. It makes me want to cry just remembering it again and it was 11 years ago. Please keep us posted. Honey feel better!!! Logan you surely don't need this!! Butter boy, I am sure you had quite a smug look on your *puss* today as you walked down those stairs. :D

Our darling little girl is HOME!!! :) Dr. Robinson said, "she is perfect" and I told him I already knew that! He checked her thoroughly and said that her throat is very irritated and the "foamy" stuff she threw up was due to that. He described it as whipped egg whites and that is exactly what it looked like. He believes it is allergies and excessive drainage, just like we get during allergy season. She will take a course of antibiotics (Amoxicillin) and one other medication that will help to dry up some of that drainage. She is exhausted, but just fine. They said she was so sweet all day. That didn't surprise me, either. After all, she is my special Golden girl. :)

Thanks again for all your prayers. Sorry I worried you so much.

Oh Pam, :( They would be so terrible. :(

I am hoping it's just an upset tummy & Honey will feel much better soon. :)

Logan there is great happiness around here just reading this post! I am so glad that Honey is just fine. Of course we all knew she was perfect already. Honey, take your medicine like a good girl. Us humans often take Amoxicillin and it fixes us right up. :) This is just great news Logan!

Thanks again, everyone. :) Miss Honey is back to normal now with the exception of sounding a little hoarse when she barks. She's taking her medicine and is also very happy, like her mom, for some gentle rain, which is helping to wash away pollen and dust in the air.
