Miss Hoppy has been sniffly this summer, and so we finally took her to the vet. It would seem to go away for a few days, then come back, so it was time for a hated vet visit. We got Regulan, and eye drops, and some blood pressure medicine.

Sadly, what the vet discovered is that my bunny, my beloved Hoppy, has a tumor in her chest, called a Thymoma. We have had an x-ray done, and the vet couldn't see any border between her heart and the tumor. It is certainly putting pressure on her heart, as she now has a heart murmur, which she never had before.

We will be going for an ultrasound next Tuesday to see how bad it is, and then see what might be done about it, if anything. The vet did keep saying "Remember, she IS ten years old," so she is an old bunny ...

Still, I don't want my bunny to be sick!

Oh no, poor Hoppy!:( I can't believe Miss Hoppy is sick. That is not good, I really wish I could help in some way, but I know that all I can do is Pray for Miss Hoppy to get better and live the rest of her life out in love and happiness.

Aw Karen, I'm so sorry to hear this. I know exactly how this feels with Tia going through her mammary tumour at this time, too. Watching the tumour sprout up from under her foreleg brings such sadness to my heart, but I am kept going in the knowlegde that she is brave, far braver than any human would be, and will get on with the remainder of her life as best she can. I know Miss Hoppy will do exactly the same, animals are so amazingly resiliant when it comes to sickness.

At ten years, Miss Hoppy has done very, very well in life. Whatever the outcome, Miss Hoppy has lived a long, fruitful life in the arms of loving humans and she couldn't have asked for more. I know that doesn't make things any easier, but I know if Miss Hoppy could talk to you, she'd tell you that herself.

((hugs)) to you and Miss Hoppy.

Luckily, we do live in the best area in the world for expert pet healthcare. We'll see what the ultrasound shows.

Miss Hoppy is slightly less active than before, but otherwise seems unbothered by this, except that her eyes are weepy, so I wipe the goo off her fur. She hated the eyedrops, and the vet let us stop those - as much would get on her fur as in her eyes anyway.

Prayers on the way for Miss Hoppy. Poor gal!

I hope her sniffles go away soon and she will get feeling better. I was once told by a very wise bunny (Julian) that Parsley is sure to cure all sicknesses in bunnies. He told me that 3 to 4 bunches a day keeps the vet away.

Maybe you should try that with Miss Hoppy ;)

Oh Karen, how many times you have consoled all of us when our pets were ill.

I just hate to even deal with the fact that it is your turn for us to pray for you, Paul and Miss Hoppy.

But, pray I will, that Miss Hoppy can be made comfortable and you will have her with you for a long time yet to come.

I know Miss Hoppy is YOUR bunny - but I am sure all would agree that we also feel she is OURS too.

Miss Hoppy gets her parsley every day! She's smaller than Julian, she couldn't eat 4 whole bunches in a day, but she always has some available! It is de rigeur as far as she's concerned. She didn't mind the blood pressure meds (Lasix) because each little piece got hidden in a raisin.

Thanks everyone, I will update you when we know something after the ultrasound.

Wow, I never realized that bunnies can live 10 years! You guys must be doing something right!!

More parsley and what ever else bunnies eat!!

Her favorites - the staples - are Parsley and Dandelion Greens, but she also gets other greens, including Lacinto Kale, Dill, Mustard greens, and others. She refuses bok choy, but likes junior baby bok choy, which I get in the good produce market one town over. She's usually got a carrot going, and an ear of corn, husks included, is tasty and fun for days at a time - she'll peel back and eat some of the husks, and some get left until they are crunchy before they are eaten, and she eats the kernels of corn off the cob just like a person does. And she always has plenty of timothy hay as well.

Thank you, everyone.

She has been less sneezy/sniffly, which was the only real 'symptom' she ever showed. Other than that, she is normal, she's just been a little less active over the summer, which may be related, but she never has liked hot weather, so her being less active isn't unusual.

She prefers NOTHING to touch her nose, thank you very much! Not the underside, anyway. Petting the nose from the tip back toward her ears is her favorite method of being petted, but one is NOT encouraged to touch the nostril area, not at all.

I will pass along the hug and kiss after she comes in from the porch - she likes to spend a few hours on the porch on not-hot days, so is leery of being approached out there, because she wants to decide herself when she'll come in! And I have been known to be really mean, and go out and pick her up to make her come in when we need to go somewhere, so I am immediately suspect. So her personality is at least not affected by the tumor ...

We just got back from the vet's office. The ultrasound showed no heart disease, which is a good thing, but the thymoma was confirmed, which is not so good.

But as Miss Hoppy is ten years old, and the only current option is surgery, there's nothing medically to be done about the tumor. Dr. Hartman, (nice lady, she's been Miss Hoppy's vet for ten years!) who said, "Well, at her age, she's sorta past her expiration date anyway," said she wouldn't want to risk Miss Hoppy not even surviving the anesthesia. She will consult with other rabbit vets, and offered me the choice of having a consult with Angel Memorial or Tufts if we wanted to go ahead with the surgery. But the surgery is major, even if she survived the anesthesia, then they'd have to crack open her chest ...

The okay news is thymomas are not very active tumors, and it could stay the same size for years.

She said, "Because of her age, you might want to do nothing, but count every day your bunny is with you as a blessing anyway."

When I told her people were praying for Miss Hoppy all over the world, Dr. Hartman said "Awwwww!"

Thanks everyone for your prayers. Miss Hoppy is glad to be home, and is munching a treat in the kitchen.

The okay news is thymomas are not very active tumors, and it could stay the same size for years.

Fingers and paws crossed that this is exactly what will happen. Bunny pats to you, Miss Hoppy!

Dear Karen and Paul,

I'm sad the news isn't better for Miss Hoppy and wish her many more happy days with you. The fact that she has already reached a grand age for a little bun is encouraging; it only means she has had the best care. I pray that tumor stays intact. Please give her a gentle hug from me and a few bunnie kisses too :)

I'm sorry that she can't have the operation. Let's all hope that the tumor stays inactive. I hope you've got many years left with that sweet bunny. I'm sure she is very happy to be back home. When I was a kid I had a bunny. He loved to be held like a baby and petted between the ears. So, please give Miss Hoppy some gentle pets between her ears from me.

Well, if it took the thymoma this long to give Miss Hoppy any symptoms, I hope that means it ain't gonna grow no bigger! :)

No medical treatment, you said - so no prednisone to just make the tumour a bit smaller? Not a cure at all, but maybe more comfort.

I just wish Miss Hoppy many more treat-munching days. She is in the best hands anywhere!

Stay well, Miss Hoppy

No, the thymoma is a solid mass, prednisone wouldn't have any effect. I also asked about sucking some of it out with a needle biopsy, but the vet said that doesn't work with a solid tumor like it might with a more fluid-filled one.

But besides the heart murmur, she doesn't show much effects from it, and doesn't seem to be in pain, just is still my feisty little bunny.

Assuming Miss Hoppy is anything like my bunnies I'm sure she is a feisty, opinionated gal. All the feistness and zest for life they have makes every moment spent with them something truly special. I hope that Miss Hoppy will continue to live happy and healthy with you for many more years.

I will - she now has an appointment at Tufts Veterinary on Saturday. The other vet she sometimes sees at our vet's office called, and sometimes they can do radiation on a thymoma to shrink it so the pressue is less on the heart, and so the bunny can breathe better. We'll see, Saturday, what it involves, how uncomfortable it is, and if they even would reccomend it for a ten-year-old little bunny.

The intern at Tufts started a "chart" to make the appointment. Name, age - those we got down. Breed - well, "Maybe a Netherland Dwarf/Rex mix? We don't really know, but she's bigger than a ND, and has bigger ears, but smaller than a Rex, and has smaller ears than they do ..."

Thank you for sharing this slice of life with Miss Hoppy. How sweet to think of her enjoying all her different treats. I do hope that Tufts can offer you some plan for lessening any discomfort she may be experiencing.

Thanks everyone. We saw the specialist at Tufts today. Nice guy - and Miss Hoppy didn't even try to bite him, which is a first. We have several options for Paul and I to discuss, and Dr. Joerg Mayer was very helpful and carefully explained everything, and even has a boy bunny that looks a lot like Miss Hoppy. He knew just how to pet and handle a bunny, and even massaged her face with one hand while listening to her heart - so his fingers were in chomping range, but she didn't feel she needed to, I guess.

When we saw Dr. Mayer on Saturday, he presented us with several options. If we are going to proceed with any course of treatment, we first have to determine what the mass is. If it is a thymoma it would be treated differently than a thymic lymphoma, which can mean the cancer is more places in her body. So that was new information, we hadn't even known it could be anything other than a thymoma.

The first step, then, is to do a fine needle biopsy, guided by ultrasound, and determine which of the two it is. He said he's pretty sure it is a thymoma, but wants to know for sure.

If it is a thymoma, there are several different treatments for it, not just "surgery or nothing."

Surgery is one option, but it is invasive and traumatic - they'd have to crack her chest open. We were already shying away from even considering that, considering Miss Hoppy's age. Then Dr. Mayer said that doing the surgery isn't necessarily a cure. He had one bunny that had the surgery done, and in a matter of weeks, the tumor was back, and just as big. So there's no way we'd go that route - we want to make her MORE comfortable, not less. As my Dad said "She's just a widdle bunny!"

There are two kinds of radiation treatments to consider. There's the "curative" kind, which is more intensive, every day for up to a month. It uncomfortable, and can result in burns on the bunny's skin. It's supposed to "cure" the cancer, but there's no guarantee. There are other side effects. And it is several times more expensive than the next option.

The "palliative" radiation is more focussed, and Miss Hoppy would likely not feel a thing. Its goal is to shrink the size of the tumor considerably, so it isn't pressing on her heart, and so she can breathe better and more freely, her eyes won't be bulgy, and she won't be sniffly/sneezy. He has had good results with other rabbits with this treatment, had one that lived for three years afterwards - it just died recently, he doesn't yet know what from, maybe old age. While there are no guarantees with this either, he thinks she could live a couple more years. And one good thing is, if in a year or so she begins to have breathing trouble again, confirming the tumor has regrown, it could be done again, if we chose to. It would be maybe three or four treatments, a week or so apart.

The last option is just treating the tumor with steroids. This is the least expensive option, but, while it may temporarily shrink the tumor, it will get to a point, maybe in six months, maybe in two months, where it no longer works. Then the cancer becomes resistant, and more virulent, and is not treatable. The bunny doesn't last long after the prednisone stops being effective.

The good thing is that Dr. Mayer answered all our questions thoroughly and carefully. We asked "Is it even okay to give a ten-year-old bunny anesthesia?" And he said, "Some people would say "No, you cannot anesthetize a rabbit, they die." But that attitude is outdated by 15 years, and the science of anesthesia has changed a lot in the intervening time." He described what they would do, both for the biopsy/ultrasound, and for the radiation, is put a little bitty "oxygen mask" on her, and give her an inhaled anesthetic, so she'd just breathe it in, and remain still for the procedure. As soon as they stop the gas and remove the mask, she'd be right back to normal. Paul asked if, because the tumor is pressing on the heart, the radiation would damage the heart. Dr. Mayer explained very carefully what how the radiation effects the cells, and why there would be very little damage to her heart at all, small parts of her heart would be damaged, but that her heart would still function.

There are no guarantees with any of the procedures, but he has had very good results with the palliative radiation treatment, and said that's what he'd do if it were his bunny. (By the way, he has a little boy bunny that looks very much like Miss Hoppy!)

I have called, and we will schedule the biopsy, and will keep you all updated as to how that goes, and what's next.

I am trying to be as thorough as possible, because I know we have many bunnies and bunny owners on Pet Talk. Remember, this all started because she had a case of the sniffles that wouldn't go away.

Dr. Mayer did listen to her heart, (after telling her "now, stop grunting so I can hear this!") and said it wasn't just a simple murmur, her heart is working so hard it sounds like a machine more than a heart. My poor bunny.

The Foster Veterinary Hospital at Tufts' Cummings School for Veterinary Medicine does seem like a world-class facility, and we are fortune that it is less than an hour's drive away.

Sometimes rabbits make little grunting noises when they are playing (she makes that noise when we are playing "toreador") or when they are angry. But even though I am sure she wasn't playing, that was the most polite she's ever been with a vet - usually she skips the grunt and goes straight to "bite first, ask questions later" mode.

He did say, except for the tumor, she is very healthy, very good lungs, her eyes are nice and clear, even though they are a bit bulgy right now, she's still "bright, alert and responsive" with just a little sign of aging along her vertebrae visible in the x-ray, teeth are good, nothing bad at all ...

Miss Hoppy and I just got home from her ultrasound/biopsy. She's still a little woozy, as they gave her a wee bit of Vallium so she wouldn't be scared of the oxygen mask. She's got a shaved patch on her side, which makes us realize how much of her size is fur!

We will not get the biopsy results until tomorrow. Dr. Mayer is afraid it might be the lymphoma, as when they were shaving her side, they found a lump, and he's worried it might be a lymph gland that's also affected. Hopefully it's not, as the thymic lymphoma is more difficult to treat than a simple thymoma. But we are not jumping to conclusions, and will see what he says when he calls tomorrow. There's a chance the labs won't be done tomorrow, but he did rush the slides to them, hoping for an answer sooner rather than later.

Thanks everyone for your prayers, when we know more, I will let you know, I promise.

The doc called already! And the good news is that it is NOT the thymic lymphoma, it's just a thymoma, which means it is just that one tumor, not systemic, and is easier to treat. So that's a relief.

Thanks, Dr. Mayer! He said he was going to rush it to the lab, methinks maybe he also told them this was no ordinary bunny? ;)

He said there was a possibility that the lump on her side was just a harmless fatty tumor, but that's why HE - the vet - was anxious to get the test results back. I have told everyone at Tufts that people all over the world are praying for my bunny, so that might have hinted at how special she is, but I think Dr. Mayer is just a bunny person - and he has a little boy bunny that looks a lot like Miss Hoppy, too!

I delived the bunny treat on your behalf. She actually LIKES Dr. Mayer, her Tufts vet, but he is mindful that her little heart is working overhard right now anyway because of the tumor pressing on it. I cannot vouch for the safety of anyone else's fingers, though, and I know there were others involved in the process. She was perky for the treat, and seems back to "normal" except for the shaved patch on her side - and no, no pictures of that, she's embarrassed enough, thank you!

Karen, I'm so glad to hear it's "just" the thymoma miss Hoppy has, and that she's feeling perkier again. :) The palliative radiation treatment seems to be the right choice for her.

You have been very thorough, and it's good the vet is so skilled, and a bunny lover as well.

So she is definitely having radiation? I must have missed that part somewhere. When will they do this?

Miss Hoppy, GOOD GIRL for taking your medicine for mommy!!! :)

We decided that that is the best course - the palliative radiation. She will start tomorrow at 10 a.m! And we will let everyone know how it goes, how often it will be, etc. I am excited at the chance to make her feel better. I know she won't live forever, even if I want her to, but at least we can hopefully shrink the tumor considerably, so it isn't affecting her little heart so much, and she'll be able to breathe better as well.

Thanks everyone. We are home now after the first radiation treatment. The oncology vet said she thought Miss Hoppy was in remarkably good shape for her age, except for the thymoma, of course. Miss Hoppy is still somewhat woozy from the anesthesia, and so is relaxing in the living room. When she was first coming out of the anesthesia, the vet put some hay down for her, and she immediately started bunnying it down, so quick the vet said "Hey, slow down, girl!" and Miss Hoppy just kept munching away.

The oncology vet said Miss Hoppy's breathing should improve markedly by the end of this week at the latest. We will be going next Tuesday for her second treatment, and they will take new x-rays then to see how much it has shrunk, and then we get to wait two more weeks for the third-and-final treatment.

They were impressed by how bright and responsive my girl is. I told her, as I told Dr. Mayer, that people all over the world were praying for my bunny, and that she is much loved by many.

And if Miss Hoppy doesn't groom the marker off her skin, it won't take as long next time.

Miss Hoppy, the marker is SUPPOSED to be there for the time being. Be a good bun and leave it alone. (Of course, I'm telling this to a bunny who is AFAIK still convinced that computer cables are meant to be bunny food)

Karen
09-25-2007, 04:35 PM
So far so good, but I think she's still tired from the big procedure earlier in the day ... But the wobbliness from the anesthesia has worn off, so that's a good thing. I will go deliver some nose=pats for all of you.

And no, Lady's Human, computer cables aren't exactly food - they simply MUST be cut and moved away from the wall. Now.

The rubber/plastic covering on tool handles? Now THAT's food - ick - Paul thinks maybe it's like chewing gum or something, but I can't taste GOOD, can it? The tool box is kept shut and where she cannot get at it.

Best of luck that this works, and in future treatments. What a lucky girl getting all these prayers! :D

As for chewing on things you shouldn't, and their flavor... *blush*... I used to be rather addicted to the soft plastic caps from high quality mechanical pencils. I think that's why i don't have any clickies besides the basic Pentel refillables. ...So who am i to judge bunnies with a penchant for tool handles? Still... Naughty bunnies!!! No swallowing plastic bits!
