Have spent the afternoon designing some small labels which I shall keep about my person to stick on any car I see where some idiot has left their dog unattended :mad:

Doesn't that just make you want to open the door and let them out?? Some people are so ignorant. I would like to put them in a car without AC for a bit and see how they like it. I have been in a restraurants before and seen cars in the parking lot with a dog closed in, panting and drooling like mad, makes me want to scream when I get inside "What IDIOT left their dog closed in the car?!?" :mad: :mad: :mad:

The label idea sound great...I think I may just do the same thing, especially living here in Florida where it is HOTTER than H&!! right now. Make sure they have EXTRA sticky on them. :D

How about a preview of your labels?. Might just have to translate some into Italian and do it here too. I am sure you know the heat and humidity in Italy and it is always the same...idiots leaving dogs in cars. It's the same the world over.

On a related subject, it has been hot and humid here. The vet I take the fosters to had 3 dogs in for heat stroke; one died. My vet, where I take my pets, also has had to deal with several and 2 died.

Even dogs who are used to regular exercise can't do it in this weather.

With the heat we had, especially last week, a note would have been too late for any animal left in a car. I think a call to the police is necessary in the summer heat.

Absolutely - call the police. By the time some idiot reads the sticker the dog could be dead.

I saw a dog in a car on my way into the grocery store a few weeks ago. Was going to have the owner paged inside, but she passed me as I was going in. I followed her and read her the riot act. She seemed to think it was fine because the window was open 2" and there was water in the car. I asked why she didn't leave her 2 kids in the car with the dog.

I think she then got the message.

Yesterday I almost had a fit when I saw a dog in a car in 90 degree heat. The car was in the shade and windows cracked but still and I had no idea how long the dog had been there! However upon walking over near the car there was a human in the passenger seat with the dog also. So I'm guessing that the human would be smart enough to turn on the A/C if it had been very long. I calmed down then.

Maybe pieces of stiff paper instead of sticky labels - that wouldn't be vandalism then.

Stick them in the driver's window, between the window and door frame.

Windshield wipers - they won't notice, or think it is advertising.

When I was at the Royal Welsh show, a message on the tamoy came across during a show...

"Could the owners of a white toyota registration xxxx xxx please attend to your dog which has been locked in your car. Passers by have noticed he is in considerable distress."

I've experienced this scene too many times to count. I always feel like checking if the doors are unlocked so I can at least tie the dogs to the door OUTSIDE. I'm sure this would be illegal also. Although we have a law against dogs riding in the back of trucks unless crated, we still have idiots doing this, I always hope some cop will be around to spot them.

I wouldn't vandalize your truck however you are taking a chance that what you are doing could jeopardize the health of your dog and is just a stupid thing to do. In heat it is best to take the dog home and then go out of the gallon of milk later. If you truly care about your pet this is what you would do.

In 2003, a police dog in Tx died after the AC in the patrol car shut down and began blowing hot air. The air system's compressor kicked off because the engine got too hot. Many cars, including modern models with computerized functions, are prone to the same problem. In August 2004, a NC couple lost 2 of their beloved dogs, and nearly lost their 3rd dog as a result of a similar failure. They had left bowls of water and ice in the car, and the AC on, during their shopping trip of less than 30 minutes.

I am going to court tomorrow afternoon here in State College as a witness because a woman left her dog in the car in order to eat dinner at Applebees. It was 80 degrees outside and the windows were only cracked about a 1/4 of an inch. There was water in the car but the schnauzer was in distress. I located her in the restaurant and explained to her why she had to go out and deal with her dog NOW. She refused so I called the police. They were there in 10 minutes and hauled her out of the restaurant to deal with the situation. They "arrested" her which is basically a summery offense or ticket. She pled (sp?)not guilty so I was subpeoned and I appear in court at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait. I hope she shows up since she had MD plates on the car.

So if you care about your pets at all you either leave them at home when it is over 65 degrees or have someone else with you to stay with the pet in the car while you get your milk. Or you risk the wrath of people who do care for your dog more than you do. Period. End of story. No if ands or buts about it.

If I ever had a major brain fart and left my dogs in a hot car I'd appreciate that a human with a brain and a big heart for animals came along and got my dogs out of the car and saved their lives.

I think Brody's Mum is talking about people leaving their vehicles with their pet in them without A/C, just leaving the windows open a crack.

I am sure most of us have gone in a store when a dog was sitting in a parked car, no A/C and the dog still be sitting there when you come back out quite some time later.

I myself have left my dog in the car just to grab a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread....but my car is always left running and the A/C cranked up. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE in circumstances!!

EDIT: LET ME CLARIFY, NOT RUNNING IN A GROCIERY STORE, JUST PULLING UP IN FRONT OF THE GAS STATION AND RUNNING IN FOR MILK OR BREAD. THE ONLY REASON WAS BECAUSE HE WAS ALREADY WITH ME IN THE CAR ON THOSE TWO OCCASIONS. I AGREE LEAVING THEM IN THE CAR WITH A/C CAN BE JUST AS DANGEROUS SUCH AS ABOVE WITH THE K-9 DOGS. You're missing my point. I park my truck, and go into a store. You don't see me. All you see is a dog sitting in a truck. I go in, get XYZ in literally 3-4 minutes, and then come out (entirely possible).

In that time, you decide that the dog has been sitting in a hot truck in a parking lot for a long time, and decide to stick something on the windshield. I am going to be livid.

You have now created an obstruction on my windshield, which I legally cannot drive with. I now have to try to remove the sticker before driving anywhere. That isn't going to happen. I'm going to call the police, and have it investigated as vandalism.

See a dog in a hot car? Call animal control, the police, whoever handles such situations in your locale. Taking the law into your own hands (unless the animal is blatantly in distress, in which case I'm going to call the police and inform them what I'm doing and why I'm doing it) is foolish.

Over here vandalism would be the least of your worries. It's illegal to leave dogs in cars in the UK and you can get fined quite heftily. I think in many parts of the US, it's illegal too, but correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I agree completely. Anybody dumb enough to leave an animal alone in a
running car, deserves to have the cops come and talk to them about being
more responsible. (assuming the A/C is on)

I would definately call the police anytime I found a dog in a closed car

The Wal-Mart I shop most frequently has shoppers who will leave their dog in the car. Unfortunately it is a stone's throw from Kohl's in the same shopping center, so the person might be in either one. The Petsmart I go to has big signs that say, Please don't leave your pet in the car, leashed pets welcome. Once I was at the supermarket on a day like today and there was a dog in a car, so I just pulled my car up opposite that one and waited till the driver came out. I didn't say anything to the driver though.

True. But I just think that it would be a little OTT to create a huge hullabaloo over a window sticker. Unless this thing measures the size of a windscreen and has extra strong glue, then it's not really too much bother to peel it off.

Lots of people put flyers under the windscreen wipers of parked vehicles, perhaps it would be better to do that rather than make a sticker? I'm pretty sure that isn't illegal or businesses would be wary of doing it.

I was downtown ealier today and I parked in the garage. As I was walking back I noticed in the back of a jeep there were 4 chihuahuas in the back NO water NO food and the windows shut up tighter then tight. :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: So I called my local police and waited until they showed up they seized the dogs and then waited until the owner showed up slapped them witha 400 dollar fine (100 for each dog) . Needless to say people shouldn't JUST call in the summer I also report and call about it in the winter months espically here in NH it gets freezing. Like my local PD told me THERE IS NO CURE FOR STUPID :rolleyes:

For starters, most retail outlets have policies against leafleting in their parking lots. (Wal-Mart, Sears, etc. will not allow any type of solicitation on their properties) I'm sure they would feel no different about someone putting stickers on windshields.

The OP was talking specifically about finding a sticker which would be hard to remove. While a leaflet under my wiper arm would merely annoy me (and immediately get thrown in the trash), a sticker would irritate me to no end, as I would legally have to remove it before driving. Any obstruction to forward vision is a safety violation. This being the case, I would be forced to call the police and file a complaint.

Leaving an animal in a car is not against the law in New York, but animal cruelty is. I prefer laws remain that way. Why? If you need to pick up a quick item on the way home from the vet's office, or another instance where an animal would be in the car with you, no problem. No harm is going to come to Lady in the 2-3 minutes it takes me to go into the supermarket and grab a gallon of milk. If, however, an animal is left in a car long enough to cause distress, it would be animal cruelty or neglect.

I have many issues with precision targeted laws in general, but that's another discussion.

I agree, there is no cure for stupid. Leaving the a/c on is not an excuse to leave a dog in a car...anything could happen, like was posted, or you could be detained for some reason. What if you had a heart attack and were hauled away in an ambulance? What would happen to the dogs when no one showed up for hours? The a/c could stop workin, the car could run out of gas, etc. I would thank anyone who did something to remind me of my stupidity if ever I pulled a stunt as stupid as that....I surely wouldn't prosecute.

I agree with Karen. nobody brings their dogs in the heat anywhere here unattended. we usually don't let the dogs go for car rides until it's way cooler in the evening and they usually don't get to go out and play until the evening, they just get potty breaks.

and with all the smoke we've been having from fires, it's too risky to have the dogs out in the heat, let alone the smoke. I would definately call the police because it IS animal cruelty and unacceptable. :mad:

While I'm clarifying things here, it is NOT a 5 minute trip to anywhere from here. To go up into town to get the aforementioned gallon of milk takes 20-25 minutes. That being the case, if we need something quick, and Lady is with me as we went wherever, even just on a ride for the heck of it, it's getting picked up on the way home. The chances of my getting detained/delayed inside a store are slim to none.

If I had a heart attack, and no one else was with me, would it REALLY matter where I was with the dog? You can come up with what if scenarios for damned near anything. If you're that worried about what if, it must be tough to leave the house in the morning.

I feel it would be better to leave a leaflet or a note under their windshield wiper and then call the local authorities. I see Lady's Human's point and do agree to an extent.

I agree 100% about your notion, but maybe just not about the stickers. I think it's a good idea, just maybe not the best way to go about doing it. While they may be breaking the law, you never know that one person could pin you for vandalism, and unfortunately that would probably get more attention and you'd get in a lot of trouble. Just leaving a sticker and going about your business will annoy the person, but chances are they won't learn anything from the experience. Calling the cops is a much better way of handling it, I think, because even if they don't think it's a "big deal" to leave their pets in an unattended car in the heat, I'm sure most people don't want to get into any legal trouble and will probably learn some sort of lesson, if not think twice before doing it the next time. And also, there's no way that you can be legally in trouble for anything (vandalism, etc).

I know here if I were to do something like that, even if the dogs were suffering, if the cops were called and both parties were present (myself and the owners of the dogs) I know that they would get a slap on the wrist and I would get a fine for vandalism. It's sad, but unfortunately that's just how it would happen here.

That having been said, yes, I have left my dogs in the cars with windows cracked while I ran inside a store or did whatever. I would never do it in a heat wave, even for a minuite, and I would be smart about it. But I don't think when I do it it would be considered "animal cruelty" or "neglect". So yes, I do it, have done it, and will continue to do so, but at the same time if I know I'm going to be making a couple of stops along the way and it's super hot out then I won't bring my dogs. Period.

However on kind of the same note, I have a word document saved on my comp for when we have visitors staying in our apartment complex that don't know how to park... Every time I come home to work to find there aren't any available parking spots because some IDIOTS don't know how to park properly, I run upstairs, print a few off, and slap them under their wipers... :mad:

While I am a cat owner not a dog owner, I do have some cats that like to travel with me. I go with the theory that I don't leave my animals in a car any longer than I'D like to be left in a car.

I have taken Pooky and Dusty before with me and have had to stop for a very short stop (usually a very quick potty break) on the way in the summertime (2-5 minutes max, parked in the shade). I only crack the windows a very tiny bit (so not to let the cool air out) and I run my A/C on MAX up until I have to make my stop (to the point I'm almost freezing) so the car is good and cold and never take long enough at a stop that I'D be uncomfortable with staying in the vehicle myself.

If it's too hot for me to sit in the car without A/C for a few minutes, it's too hot for my pets!

The few stops I've had to make with the cats the car was not even stuffy when I got back in and I was perfectly comfortable checking on the cats and getting my things together before starting the car and getting the A/C going again without sweating.

While it's not possible for a common passerby to know that if they were to have walked by and saw my cats, it would be obvious from looking at them that they were not in any kind of distress or panting in any way. Even if they pried my doors open (which they wouldn't have time to do before I got back) they would find a comfortably cool car, cool fur and cool foot/nose pads.

I would never subject my cats to anything I wouldn't tolerate myself.

A teeny sticker is hardly vandalism is it - and compared to the suffering of an innocent dog I think you are over reacting a bit.

I'm not stupid enough to think that a sticker will save the dog - the main aim of those is to inconvenience the dumb owner. My first priority would be to either trace that particular cretin or call the RSPCA.

I am sending a letter to the local newspaper to highlight the issue too

No no, don't give up -- just go about it in a different manner :) I think the flyers are a GREAT idea... and writing a letter to the local paper is a great start too! I think your notion is GREAT, I just wouldn't use stickers, I'd use flyers under the wipers and a call to the police. Because, like I said, a sticker can be peeled off (annoying as it may be), a flyer can be thrown away... but you can't ignore the cops!

I was watching a programme the other day with this subject in it. RSPCA officers at a show were going round the cars looking for dogs left shut in. Somebody reported a dog that had been left in the car from morning until afternoon and it was dead when the police and RSPCA got to it. The people who reported it left a note for the owners saying:

We watched your dog die at 3:30pm you IDIOTS...and we have informed the police.

The dogs in cars subject is so well put about that I can't understand how any dog owner could not know and leave their dogs in cars, especially on hot days. Some people are too thick to own pets. :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

I have left Keegan in the car many times with all the windows down all if not part way - a bowl/cooler full of ice. And busted my A$$ to get in get what I have to get. Another time - you bet I left the windows up -
why?
b/c she was in there with the AC on FULL BLAST - and the car was locked and running. And again I busted my A$$ to get what I needed to get.
It's been hotter than you know what here too -
and in that respect - I just don't take her. She pants a lot anyway - and unless I'm taking her to my parents house - and have to run an errand on the way - that is the only time she rides in the car in the summer.
Would I charge them with vandalism? -

If someone watched me leave her there - and just as I walked to the store- I hear a smashing sound and they are busting my window- and she hasn't even been in there a minute. Ummm yea I'd press charges.
I don't agree with people to run into a sit down restaurant to eat and leave them in the car. That's ridiculous. That's someone that doesn't give a S--t about their animal and needs them taken away anyway. That is why they made drive-thrus. That and so you can share with the dog.... ;)

that's not entirely true - leaving children in cars is also now becoming an epidemic - don't assume that its just animals people don't care about.
I think we both have reason to defend the fact that we enjoy traveling with our dog.
And I'm sorry - I'm going to be a &itch here and do it - but does anyone remember our own PT member that traveled from one coast to another with a dozen cats and a dog in car? And LH chops are getting busted for running in and getting a gallon of milk - HYPOTHETICALLY. :eek:

They schmooze over cats at the drive through too, actually they gather a whole group at the window because they rarely see a cat trying to peek in their drive thru window. ROFL And the people at the bank keep appologizing because they only have a bowl with doggie treats to send back out instead of cat treats! LOL

Kloe's never been thru the bank but I did take her thru an ice-cream type place once when she was a kitten - and that caused quite the stir. I don't take her anywhere now b/c she gets car sick! :( She only goes to the vet in the carrier so I can keep the vomit contained!
