Sugar is going in to the vet's office early Friday morning for a lumpectomy. Like many bichons, she has plenty of "old lady warts." But this lump, on her front just below the neck, blew up fast from nowhere. We had it aspirated last week, and under the microscope the cells are dividing rapidly.

It is in an awkward place, an e-collar won't work as it will sit right on the site. So they will use a loose bandage and I have to watch that she doesn't itch it. Dad has already said that will be MY job!

I think they will be using general anesthesia, not a local. That makes me nervous, she is 10 years. They will send it to the lab to get more info as to what it is.

I should know how she is doing by about 2 PM.

Sugar is home. The surgery went fine. We won't have the biopsy results until Tuesday or Wednesday.

The surgical site looks nasty. They had to cut all around to try and get everything. They couldn't go as deep as they wanted, turned out the lump was right on the jungular!

She has 2 levels of stitches, one level inside and one outside. They did not use dissolving stitches in either as those tend to produce irritation. And with this location, Sugar can't wear an ecollar so they wanted to minimize any irritation.

She has a cough which was not expected. Hoping that is from the intubation and should go away by tomorrow. She is not coming out of the anesthesia as fast as they would like; they are thinking this is the pain meds keeping her subdued.

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Ouch. Looks sore, poor baby. :( I hope she feels better soon.I think
the anesthesia is as hard on them as the surgery sometimes.

Awe... poor Sugar! Let's hope she stays relaxed and won't fuss with her stitches. Hope the biopsy comes back normal as well.

Big hugs and smooches for Sugar! You are a brave girl!

Oh the poor thing! :(

I can see why an e-collar wouldn't work.

Smoches to her and I wish her a speedy recovery!

Got the lab results for the lump this afternoon. It was a
trichoblastoma, which is considered a benign growth, and it appears there was a complete excision.

YIPPEE!

Now to get through the rest of the healing process. Sugar wants to SCRATCH, SCRATCH, SCRATCH those stitches UGH! She had it bleeding a few times. We wrapped a tshirt around and secured it with duct tape; the tape or the smell of it or something makes her drool.

It was hard waiting all this time for the lab results; I am SO relieved! Whew!

YAAY!

Is there some anti-itch stuff you can put on her incision? Bactine or something? Or some olive oil?

Don't scratch, sweetie, that will make it worse! :D

Great news!!!

Put a sock on her hind leg... It'll be really uncomfy for her, but it'll help stop the scratching, as her paw will feel too weird to scratch, or it'll atleast add some padding to those sharp claws.

I used a dog booty when Cadeau had some fatty lumps removed.. she hated the booty & her scratching went down by more then 50% as sge hated the feel of the boot.. + the boot is thich & her claws couldn't hurt her, so when she did scratch, it wasn't too much of a big deal
