he didn't have another one last night, so maybe it won't be a bad weekend, i'm on duty all 3 days this weekend. thanks for the support and prayers. dear in love with animals, alex has had seizures since 1998, so it's been a long while. he can go as short as 3 weeks and the longest seizure free time was 6 months. this am, he's real interested in breakfast and going out for a backyard check

so happy boy made me a liar. :( he had one at 11:30pm, one at 2:30am and one at 8am. eileen had to be human parent on the scene for that one, i was at work. i called the vet and she knows, so off to the pharm for more meds. yuck!

a very stoned dog is sitting under the desk. he had another one around 11:30 last night. after each seizure to boost his blood sugar, per the vets' instructions he's to get a small meal; peanut has learned this means a middle of the night snack, she loves the scrambled egg or cottage cheese. alex inhales the food and looks for more, he's willing to eat anytime.

alex has had 2 more seizures since sunday am. i talked to the vet and we're gonna bump his phenobarb up to 164 mg, twice a day, blood work to test his levels in 3 weeks. this is a lot of meds for a 40-ish pound 11 year old dog. i do get upset over the number he has had and the amount of med he's on and i've worked myself into a migrane, so that monster is here too-GRRRR, ya think head issues can be passed tween dogs and humans? :p

aawww poor you and poor Alex! :(
well actually my holistic/empath vet told me the last time I broke my foot that that was the reason kept hurting her legs - was b/c she was so in tune with me. I said TELL HER TO QUIT IT! b/c it was easier for me to deal with a hurt leg - than watching her struggle to do it! Lots of hugs and prayers on the way!

Joyce, I am very, very bad at checking the Health section. I am so sorry that Alex is having trouble with seizures again. And I was most surprised too. Snoopy had his first seizure since Dec. 13 on the 11th. He was 4 minutes long grand mal - I began to wonder if he was ever going to come out of it - but doesn't always seem longer while they are going through it? I gave him his medicine and followed up with a couple days of valium but he seems to be doing okay. (knock on wood). I checked my calendar and found that 3 years ago on the 13th was Snoopy's first seizure. So what was in the air?

Sure makes you think ,doesn't it? Another scary thing about this disease
would be that it can strike with no warning. :(

my vet can't find anything wrong, she said alex is neurologically competent ( and i wish i was :D ). the circling thing might have been a complex partial seizure, might have an episode of old dog vestibular disease, or maybe something else. but, for today, he's home, is annoying the cats and is happy as a well loved dog. life is good, and i'm still wanting some one to tell me i'm neurologically competent :p

alex had 1 more episode of spinning. in consulation w/ the vet, i'm splitting his evening phenobarb dose 2/3 at regular pill time(6:30), last 1/3 at 3 1/2 to 4 hours after that. the idea is to keep his blood levels at a theraputic level, all night. he and princess peanut are thrilled with the extra food at bedtime. thanks so much for the concern and the assertion of competence. i need that

alex has had a series of seizures this weekend, some grand mal and some petite mal, in the PMs- he's "gone" for a few seconds, then he's back. he was on my lap a few minutes ago, we were napping and i felt the seizure start in his body, then i could see his eyes change, it's as though he left for 90 seconds, then he comes back from seizure land. he's pacing in the kitchen right now, recovering. i reread the poem autumn a few days ago, it speaks about our human awareness of our beloved dogs too brief days with us, and i wept. it won't be today that he goes. it's autumn and i'm sad

AUTUMN
by Christy Caballero

What do we do when our loving pets face the last leg of the race? We do all we can to help them finish well, of course. We take time to read the unspoken needs of the friends we've come to know so well. We give the simple reassurance of a loving touch when the old boy seems confused for no reason.
We groom them faithfully, but more gently, as age brings muscle wasting, and the arthritic bones aren't so well padded. We learn to slow down for their sake, as they enjoy the scent of the wind, or track a visitors trail across their yard. We expect to be inconvenienced, and aren't angry when it happens.

We watch for pain and treat it, watch for changes in vision and hearing and do what we can to help preserve those precious senses for as long as possible.

We take care of their teeth, and make sure their food is a manageable texture for them. We remind them of the need for a potty walk when they seem to forget.

We remember the little rewards. We scratch the graying ears and tummy, and go for car rides together. When the pet we love has an unexplained need for comfort, we give it freely. When infirmities bring a sense of vulnerability, we become our old guardian's protector.

We watch their deepest slumbers, when dreams take them running across long-forgotten fields, and we remember those fields too. When they cannot stand alone, we lift them. When their steps are uncertain, we steady them. And if their health fails, it falls to us to make the choice that will gently put them to rest. But until that is absolutely necessary, we pause to let the autumn sun warm our old friend's bones. And we realize, autumn is not a bad time of year at all. Old age is not a disease or a reason to give up. It is a stage of life that brings its own changes. Autumn can be a beautiful time of harvest.

And, sometimes, the harvest is love

a quiet day so far, he had some petite mals and circle walking at 4 am, during the early am potty break. an extra 16 mgs of phenobarb for him, to lessen the chance of a full blown grand mal. we're celebrating his 12th birthday the first weekend in feb, with ziggy cakes and a long park walk. thanks for the support, it helps more then you can know

I'm sorry I wasn't able to come down but I was also afraid the excitement of meeting a new person would be a lot for him to handle. And sometimes after something that traumatic you just need "MOM TIME"....

there's an awful lot to be said for having a 40# lappuppy. :D. since i've been off work, the dogs, and 2 cats, have learned to get to the recliner when i pick up my fleece throw. this afternoon, i loaded the cd player, put the remote on the table next to the mug of sweet tea and opened a new book. mojo, squirty and alex were there within 2 minutes, peanut was just a few minutes later, but she gamely leapt up on the footrest, scattering the cats. it was nice

That is great to hear. Staci e-mailed me too so you and Alex have been in my thoughts and prayers. Seizures are so scary! Snoopy hasn't had one in awhile but is a pancreatic episode right now. We go to the vet today to see if there is something more we can do for the poor guy. Right now he is so unstable (I guess from the meds) that he falls and stumbles around like he is drunk. I will continue to keep you and Alex in my thoughts and prayers. Diana

diana, wanna talk about pancreatitis? yahoo has a group for dogs w/ that, i'm a lurker, cuz it's been several years since the last bout for the wonder dog *knocks wood HARD* and the ataxia(wobbliness) from the meds is always a balancing act. seizures dogs have such interesting things huh?

Yeah, this seizure stuff is so much fun. I am going to start a thread for prayers for Snoopy. Took him to the vet today and things are not so good. We are going to have to run a bunch of tests as pancreatitis is not Snoopy's only problem right now.

As for the yahoo sight, sure send me the address. If you want to send me your phone (pm) number, I wouldn't mind talking but I am on babysitting duty tonight so I am not sure when I will be able to.
