Today at work a very snoody lady came in. She asked if we could put her three dogs to sleep. We told her we could. She filled out her paperwork and brought the dogs in. We weighed them and turned to ask her if she wanted to be present when they passed. She said "No. I just want their collars. I would rather never see them again." I was so shocked. She didn't care about these dogs. I asked her why she was having the dogs put to sleep. If they were agressive. She said "No, they are nice dogs. I just don't want them anymore."
The first dog was a sweet little 8 month old Pittie boy. He was sweet as pie and didn't quite understand why he was there. We put a muzzel on him and slid the needle in his leg. A few seconds later he was gone.
The next were two 75lb Black Lab mixes. About 5 yrs old. Sweetest dogs I've ever met. Loved to give kisses. Their ears were fly bitten to the point they were bleeding. We put muzzels on each of them and the vet put the first one down. I think the second dog knew his buddy was dead. He looked at his friend, tucked his tail and started crying. About a minute later he too was dead.
As I was bagging up these dogs I started to tear up. I've helped put a lot of dogs down, but these dogs touched me. They were good dogs. They had no reason to die. The puppy had years of life ahead of him, but thanks to an uncareing and unreponsible owner who just didn't want the dogs anymore they are now in a trash bag in a freezer.

Sometimes some vets ask the owner if they can try and find a home for them, but some owners insist it's "My pet" and they want it "Put down."
I wish that sort of thing was reportable to a Humane Society or something.
It's tempting to want to leave the corpses on her doorstep! But she would figure out who...
I don't think there are words to properly describe that heartless person (I cannot call her a woman).
:(
I hope you feel better, Lute.

How heartless!!!!
I'm so sorry you had to do this, it must have just torn you up.
This really upsets me. She walks in and "disposes" of these wonderful, healthy, loving dogs, without a second thought.
We would have given ANYTHING to save our Sherman, and we couldn't. It just isn't fair. :(

That's soo odd. Here in our state unless the dog's are terminally ill or have an illness that wont improve or if the dog is in pain is the only way an onwer cna put them to sleep. Other wise the vet tell them to go to the local shelter and give them away or the vet's will take them into their pratice and try to adopt them out. Same thing with cats..thats actaully how I inquried my 3 cats. Anyway that is soo sad i am sorry you had to deal with that today

That just brought tears to my eyes. I would have taken the three into the back.. removed their collars, but the dogs in my car and took them home. Then I'd have come back and handed the lady the three collars..
Thats just awful. I cant believe that's allowed.

May she rot in hell! If I had to do what you do every day, I'd be scarred forever. I don't know how you do it. And it should be considered a crime for things like this to happen. This just hurts my heart so much. I hope those sweet dogs have a special place at the RB. I'd love to be able be the one to care for them when we all meet up again. This just stuns me. I'm so angry at that hateful, uncaring ***** How much you want to bet she gets more dogs, too? I could rant about this for a while.

I'm stuck at work, too. I want to do the same thing. And I was picturing Dasher because because of the Lab mixes. That woman must not have an ounce of feeling in her. The title made me curious. Never in my wildest imagination did I expect to read this. I should have stopped after the first paragraph but I was so stunned I couldn't stop reading. I thought it was a joke.
I'm going to vomit. Seriously. I guess I'm stupid and naive. I didn't know vets do convenience euthanasia.

First, the fact that a vet did this, without the dogs even being in poor health, is a major concern. What kind of vet does that?! I could never ever work with a vet that did things like that for the convenience of the owner.
Secondly... the woman needs to get some serious help. You just don't do that to your pets.
Did the vet or any other techs say anything about saving the dogs?! What kids of practice is this?!
mr.chiwawa
08-08-2007, 10:29 PM
That was my exact thought!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I don't know which makes me feel sicker the fact that the owner requested such a serivce instead of bringing them to her local spca OR the fact that the vet did it NO questions asked. I certainly would steer clear of them and their practice. If not to go further and report them to the state

Well, here's the mission statement from www.invma.org:
Mission of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association
The Indiana Veterinary Medical Association promotes animal health, animal well-being and public health, advances the veterinary medical profession, and is dedicated to the highest standards for professionalism and ethics.(updated 3/2007)
Sure doesn't sound like this vet is following that.
I should have pointed this out in the origonal post. The vet did ask the techs if any of us could take the dogs home. If I didn't bring the puppy home the other day I would have scooped the Pittie pup right up. The vet was not happy about doing this. He works for another vet. He had to. He complained about it the whole time. He wanted to save the dogs, but we simply couldn't.

Poor Loki, Nate, and Kappy :(
I wish your vet would have contacted a rescue. A lot of times that's what vets up here will do despite it being against the law. (If the dogs truly have nothing wrong with them.)
At least the woman didn't just take them to the pound where they probably would have suffered before dieing.
p.s. Her just dropping the dogs off like that, but asking for the collars puts up little red flags. (Was this a domestic issue? If she did care enough to want something to remember them by, why didn't she try to find them homes first? Does she plan on just getting other dogs to throw away?) Also thinking... Does your clinic scan healthy dogs for microchips to see if these dogs actually do belong to these people before euth'ing? I'm sure a rescue would want to know if someone was doing this to one of their dogs... or it could prove the person that brought them in was just a vindictive neighbor or something.

That is just horrible. I get pretty peeved when people bring animals to the shelter along with the excuse 'I don't want them anymore', but I suppose at least they're giving them a shot at a better life. How harrowing for you to have to witness irresponsible ownership in full swing. :( I found euthanasia surprisingly easy to bear witness to whilst I was working at a vets, but I know that if I'd have seen it performed on perfectly healthy animals, then I too would have felt horribly guilty.

He didn't HAVE TO he could have refused and made the other vet do it. He could have called the local shelters and seen if they could take them. What a lame excuse
Now I'm not condoning putting healthy animals down, but...
He may have had to, as lute said, he works for another vet. Turning clients away is bad for business, and I know that it's wrong, but that can be a difference between being in a well payed profession or out hunting to get it back. Making another vet do it makes no difference. The dogs are still PTS.
Yes, he could have called the shelters, but what if he could only get them into a kill shelter? Then they'd have just suffered in cages, and 99 times out of one hundred it would result in the same outcome - euthanasia. Even in a no-kill, shelters are not pleasant places for animals to be. Sure, the workers do their best, we are always slaving away at the shelter I volunteer at to make things as best as possible for our animals, but the result is no where near perfection. Dogs can stew in their kennels for months, even years. My heart is torn another inch every time I walk down the corridors of my shelter and see all the sad faces behind bars.
Plus, if he had refused, what's to say this woman (who sounds an absolute headcase anyway) would have just abandoned the dogs onto the streets that evening? Or worse still, 'disposed' of them herself?
It is tragic that these animals lost their lives prematurely and it shouldn't have happened. But their blood is on the hands of the woman, NOT the vet. At least these dogs are now free from any further suffering they might have had at the hands of the woman.
OK, off the soapbox now. I just don't see why people are so quick to blame the vet when far worse things happen in veterinary surgeries all the time. Quite frankly, if most pet owners knew what goes on in the practice outside the consult rooms, quite a few people would be a little surprised.

Our dogs are considered "property" under the law & Vets sometimes have
no good options available. Yes, there are some Vets who refuse to put down
a healthy animal, it won't stop stupid people who want to end their lives.
There are others Vets who will do it.
In a perfect world, every pet would have a loving home & a place to grow
old gracefully. Maybe someday.

OH MY GOD!!! This is just horrible, what a friggin witch!!!!! I just can not wrap my brain around people like that, I wish they would make more things a crime to be punishable by jail, etc against animals then what they do. So many people have no clue how loving and sensitive they are. Lute I can not imagine how you do the job you do sometimes. God Bless You.
My vet would never do what your's did, he even told me of a situation once where he had a couple that brought a 1yr old cocker spaniel that was very aggressive, and they wanted the dog put to sleep because of this. The aggressiveness was not something that with the proper training and the right person could not be taken care of. So he made an offer to them to buy the dog instead of putting it to sleep, he actually kept the cocker himself and he had that dog for 15yrs. When i first started going to him, she would run around the office, she was red and just the best dog, she is what made me fall inlove with cockers.

At least I have some peace of mind knowing these were her dogs and that more than likely this is one of the kinder fates they were likely to have.
Lute, don't ever be too hard on yourself. This job will get emotionally draining very quickly. Look at all the positive things you will be able to do and all of the animals you can help.
The longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more "credibility" you'll get. Hopefully the main vet will give you a good review and a letter of referral.
When you get to that point maybe you can offer a few suggestions on how to better the practice.
If you do really good there and "pass" with flying colors YOU can start interviewing other clinics and finding out their policies and how they handle certain situations. Maybe you can find a few that you like and see if they need anyone else on their team with similar views.
Or maybe you'll be the thread of moral support that others like you are the current clinic need to stand up and make changes happen at the current clinic.
For now though just get a feel for how things work around there. Stay strong and keep your chin up. If you need to come to PT and vent about your worse days (of course we'd love to hear about your great ones too! ...while still respecting patient confidentiality of course.)
I'm sorry for the lame excuse. I've only worked at this vets for a little over a week. This is just what I was told. I don't agree with it either.
