View Full Version : Drinking and peeing a lot: Update - Chipper has a UTI

The past couple of days Chipper has been drinking a lot of water. It's been warming back up a little lately, but even back in June when we had 90 degree days, he wasn't consuming this much water.

I can't keep the bowl full fast enough. He'll drink a whole bowl in one sitting and then immediately want to go outside and will pee. He'll come back in and not 10 minutes later he'll want to go out again.

We've been staying at my parents house the past three days and he constantly drank and sat by the door wanting to go out.

He peed twice in the house. :(

I went out with him one time and I could see the pee was clear. Barely a hint of yellow.

His appetite is great and he plays with me and Kia but at times seems a bit down/mopey.

I'm not sure if he's just hot/really thirsty or if this is indicative of something wrong.

What illnesses are associated with excessive drinking?

I just found this hope itīs nothing at all and just being hot and thirsty....

when you drink a lot you pee a lot, letīs hope for that, and being the pee clear indicates heīs "cleaning himself" oppossed as if it were bright/dark yellow which would mean some disease...

Two thoughts:

Diabetes

Kidney issues

A pee sample and blood test at the vet's wouldn't be out of order. Just to rule out these nasties.

If I remember correctly, hypothyroidism can also have those symptoms. I think maybe a UTI could also. Dogs DO get urinary tract infections.

Trip to the doc, preferably with a urine sample, is in order. Hope it is nothing serious.

Screams kidneys to me, Kimmy...

I like the idea of a urine sample to the vet, hopefully it's nothing. Glad he still has an appetite, but I'm worried about the mopey part as well.

Good vibes to my favorite boy!

Screams kidneys to me, Kimmy...

Me as well.

I'd take a sample to the vet to start with.

Hugs to your little boy.

kidneys, liver, uti, whatever it is, it doesn't sound normal for him. I would take a sample to his vet, if he doesn't have an elevated temp, they may want to do blood tests too. Big hug & kiss to your sweet boy :)

Andy said he was a bit lethargic last night but he ate his dinner and breakfast.

He drank a little water today but not nearly the amount he was the past couple of days. He's been mopey and following me around. He's peed twice and I got a sample during our first trip out.

He's crashed out and dreaming right now (his paw is twitching).

Kia's refused all food today. :( So both go in at 3:15.

Oh no Kimmy! :(. I am so sorry to hear Chipper and Kia don't seem to be feeling as well. You all will be in my thoughts, I hope the vet is able to find out what's going on and get them feeling better soon. Is it really hot there? Sometimes my collies used to lose interest in food more when it was really warm. Tash does too sometimes but Tommy and Raven are chowhounds :o

Besides kidney or UTI infection, add in possibly the beginning of Cushings. To the Vet you go for a diagnosis.

Hi gang!

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. :)

Chipper's temp, kidney and liver functions are normal, but he does have a UTI. Poor boy. He's on pills for the next 10 days. His hot spot on his neck turned out to be a fungal infection so I have some medicated shampoo to put on it as well.

Kia's temp is normal and she appears well. We suspect she's not caring for the heat or she's just feeling picky. Dr. Kuschel gave me a couple of cans of ID to give her to see if it boosts her appetite. (She gobbled some up at the vets so it appears she's being picky ;) )

They got their nails trimmed as well. Kia was a trooper but Chipper had to be muzzled.  He's not a fan of the nail trim. :o

:) Whew, I'm glad it's nothing worse. Miss Kia's just being a diva, because she can. ;) And poor Chip, but he'll be feeling better in no time. Belly rubs to both!

Phew! So glad to hear it's only a UTI! But they're no fun either :( Giant hugs to the kissy boy!! Hope his neck clears up too!

And Miss Kia, are you taking after Jack these days? He's been extremely finicky when it comes to food time too the last couple days.

Oh good, glad to see this update Kimmy! My collie Willie used to get UTIs off and on. He seemed to get them worse on some foods than others, I had to switch a few times. Easy to treat, though the prescription food/meds can be expensive! Glad to hear Kia checked out too. Tash used to become disinterested in her food now and then, especially in the summer. She never leaves her raw though, I guess that's yummy enough to keep her interested :p

Oh Jess, I hope I don't have to change foods. With Chipper's sensitive tum tum, it'd be a pain to find something he could stomach.

Yep, nothing like that expensive grub. :D

My goodness Phred! Glad my two don't turn the apartment into a speedway after a nail trim. :D

Sorry I missed this thread Kimmy but I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing good now. I hope the meds and shampoo make Chipper feel better and tell Kia it's ok to be picky every once in a while (Roxey's like that sometimes too:o)

Kisses to them both!

Chipper's getting better. Not nearly drinking as much or going out as often like he was. He did have two accidents in the house though. Once last night before I got home and once today. No warning on that one. I was in the bathroom, he swung his head in, turned around and peed in the hallway.

Kia is still being really picky. She'll eat the wet food but won't touch the dry (much to Chipper's delight  ). Andy's going to give her tuna and rice tonight.

Sorry to have missed this too, Kimmy, but I'm glad I got to the best part. I'm sure glad The Chippster is feeling better! Has "Mz Thang" (funny, Stace...) gone back to her regular grub?

Thanks guys. :)

Chipper had an accident on Friday, but overall, he's drinking and peeing normal.

Kia is well....Kia. *laughs* She doesn't eat with the same gusto as before when it comes to her regular food and regular treats. Sometimes there is food left over in the bowl.

However she went ape over a venison bone treat and I picked up some all natural treats at the Pet Expo that she is ga ga over. And she definitely didn't say no to the frozen yogurt treat she got at the expo. ;)

Andy suspects she's just bored with her food. So we're trying to figure out how to jazz it up. :)

A T-Bone Steak smothered in Krunchies might hit da spot! :p

For Chip ~

Consider a Dawgie Diaper - available at Petsmart ...
They hold a sanitary pad and fit around his rear end, covering his "thingy" -
If he has an accident, the pad sops it up.

Bowser wore one at night for a while when his bladder stone was causing problems.

He didn't like it till I started telling him he was wearing his Jammies at night.
Then he didn't seem to mind so much! ;)

One CAUTION ---
Ya GOTTA remember to take the Jammies **OFF** before you pop the door open
and send 'em out for a morning outie!
He'll be able to lift a leg a lot quicker than you can notice the problem and try
to scamper after him hollerin "WAIT a minute - WAIT A ... Awwww ... NUTZ!" :(

My past experience with both a CAT and a DOG... suddenly urinating a lot... drinking a lot.... etc was that of diabetes... I finally had to get the BOX(s) of SMALL(not large) diabetes needles and inject them twice a day with a small amount of Insulin(which I purchased at Sam's Club).....

NOW...the dog urinating in the house all of a sudden.. That could be caused by either(or both): a) the onslaught of diabetes and/or b) if you recently left your doggie in a kennel. Leaving a dog in a kennel forces them to urinate and doo-doo IN their kennel so when they go HOME, they carry that temporary trait with them so they have to be re-trained to go outside when they want to do their business.

Diabetes is not the end of the world but the problem is giving them injections twice a day...whatever you do (if you have to start giving injections) is to buy the big box of SMALL NEEDLES....
