No.. my poor old 17-year old dog is not down with a disease of any kind but simply an enlarged heart (according to the vet who has done every test under the sun) and the vet did prescribe TUSSIGON... taken once in the morning and one in evening. THIS Actually works and cut out the coughing completely. The problem is that each pill is (costs) $2.72 each. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I can use?

I would ask your vet the same question you're asking us.

By the way, Welcome to Pet Talk! 17 years old is very impressive! :)

Tell the Vets about your concerns with the cost and ask if there is a
generic form of TUSSIGON available. Does your dog take the 5 mg pill?

Welcome to Pet Talk! I would suggest to ask your vet about another pill that is cheaper. Good luck and keep us updated!

As for the dosage of the tussigon.. the vet did not note on the bottle whether it was 5 mg or just what.

I will ask the vet if there is a generic that I could use. I do know that if I had a perscription, I could send away to a company that sells pet supplies, etc. their cost(with prescription) is $.70 a pill..

At any rate, I will ask the vet for a generic and/or a prescription that I could send away for the medicine....

Thanks for the comments, etc... SO.. I did go to the vet(in a letter/note) and asked her about generics and/or whether I could get a prescription for 2-3 months so I could order on line.. SHE, very kind for the mostly disgusting veterinarians here in Phoenix) did just that.. So..I have a three month supply prescription(180 pills) and I contacted a mail order catalog people that had sent me their catalogs in the past and they said YES, they could do it ONLY with a prescription so I sent it in with a money order for about $143 which would have otherwise cost me $500. The company that I ordered from is "Doctors Foster and Smith"..... If anyone is interested, I can give you their 800 number, etc etc. :)

Congrats on finding a Vet to work with you on this. A good Vet always
takes time to help out with our concerns about price, or any thing else.
Good for you for asking. Do you have a picture of your dog to share with
everyone?
