I found this on craigslist.

I adopted your pet today...
The one you left at the pound;
The one you had for ten years
And no longer wanted around.

I adopted your pet today...
Did you know that he's lost weight?
Did you know he's scared and depressed
And seems to have lost all faith?

I adopted your pet today...
He had fleas and a little cold;
Guess you don't care what shape he's in
— You abandoned him I am told.

I adopted your pet today...
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies,
Or was there NO reason he couldn't stay?

I adopted your pet today...
He doesn't play or even eat much;
I guess he's very sad inside and
It'll take time for him to trust.

I adopted your pet today...
And here he is going to stay;
He's found his FOREVER home
And a warm bed in which to lay.

I adopted your pet today...
And shall give him all that he will need
— Patience, love, and security,
So he can forget your selfish deed.

Everyone who has ever given up a pet for any reason, other than one they had no control over, should be made to read this poem daily! They also need the ten commandments for a responsible pet owner. I'll see if I can find them, and post.

The Trouble Is That A Lot Of People Have No Sense Of The Word Responsibility. They Only Want Whats Fun And Dont Care If They Do A Good Job At Work, They Buy Things That They Can Afford And Worst Of All Do Not Care For Thier Pets.
The Angels Tell Me That They Are Getting So Many Pets Angels Now Who Were Abandoned And Abandoned.
These Idiots Will One Day Have To Face The Music For Thier Thoughtlessness Towrads Gods Creations.
One Fine Day.

I sent this to Cochrane Humane, as well as the 10 Commandments. They may have something similar already, but hopefully they will hand out the "10" in adoption kits.

If the poem will make people stop and think and prevent them from abandoning their pets, then it's served its purpose. But it won't make a difference to the ones who already did the deed; they have no conscience.

Such a great poem, it is bittersweet.

If my financial situation gets any worse, I might have to give up my kitties. Will I get hit with that poem? Hey, at least the pet was left at a shelter, where he/she would be cared for and found a new home.

:(

Aw Liz, the poem wouldn't APPLY to you. No where does it say "couldn't afford the pet." It says "And no longer wanted around. " New baby, what ever.

Everyone here on PT knows darn well you WANT your pets! It just isn't always possible. Please don't take this poem as aimed at you or anyone in your situation. WANTED pets are a different matter entirely.

There are some reasons beyond our control, finances, nursing homes, or your health doesn't allow you to properly care for a pet. This poem is aimed at people who abandon their animals. I for one, will be praying that your finances allow you to keep your kitties. I know how much their sweet little faces mean to us! Good Luck!
