Just had to gush about one of my new favorite breeds! :D :D :D
After just completing our 6-week obedience class, where one of our regular classmates was a black female Standard Poodle, I have to say that I am completely smitten with this breed! 'Gigi' had such grace and poise, was happy and freindly, and so smart. You could just see the intelligence in this dog's eyes! I love all dogs, but WOW, Standard Poodles seem to have just about every good quality I can think of!!!! ... And they're so soft and fluffy! ;) :D
You forgot one thing... they look great next to greyhounds :D *hint hint*
I know you have your hands full right now but when the time comes, I'd seriously consider getting a poo baby because of all the reasons you already stated! :)
Poodles are such a joy. I can't wait until Terri tells us more about her new baby toy poodle, Mocha.
THE POODLE IS A WONDERFUL BREED! I HAVE A NEIGHBOR WHO HAS THREE POODLES! THEY CAN DO THESE CUTE TRICKS THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY A POODLE. BUT, MY DAISY AND MY POLLY WOULDN'T APPROVE OF THAT!
Well those of you who know me probably figured I would have to get in here. :D Yes, standard poodles are terrific (I have a cream colored female right now) as are miniature poodles and toy poodles and I've had them all! There is a poodle size for every taste! :D My last standard poodle was black and her name was Whitney. She has been at the Rainbow Bridge since 1996 and had all of the qualities that you describe. She lived to please her humans and was almost human in her understanding. She came in second place in obedience school and it was because of a "handler error" and her handler was my hubby. :) My present poodle, Bella, is a sweetie and very smart also but is also the most apt to get in trouble of all of the poodles that I have had. :D She is 9 months old now and can be very much like a human toddler during "the terrible twos!"
I am so glad you got to meet a standard poodle and form your own opinion about the breed. There was a thread a while back and it dealt with the way poodles are often viewed by some people, and they often can't get beyond the fancy clips that some of them have. Thank you for your nice note!

I really love the standards! I also would love to get a mini if it was a carbon copy of Reece. I have seen some mini's that would not be a good match for me, but I would love a dog just like Reece in both looks (love that little Reece) and personality. I would strongly consider getting a standard one day but my hubby is not sold on the breed yet...but he has so much more respect of standards since we saw pictures of some of the S&R dogs at ground zero in NYC working all those long, devistating hours. It brought alot more respect towards the breed. Here they were getting covered in soot and working tirelessly and bravely, finding only body parts, in extremely horrendous conditions. That's a far fetch from the foo foo dogs you see in the shows! These were real heros and hard workers and they were obviously well trained, otherwise they would not be there. Also, when I was in the training class for Delta Society Pet Partners (to be a therapy dog team with Graham) there were 2 standard poodles who were owned by the trainer and evaluator. They were both certified therapy dogs and they had exceptional temperments.
My hubby has alot more respect for standards now, but I would never want a dog breed that was not fully loved and appreciated for all that it is by every member of the family. I will not ever have a poodle unless my hubby were to change his mind. Thanks to the S&R dogs in NYC, and the therapy dogs in my class, he is far more enlightened about the wonderful breed.
