View Full Version : Good-bye, Beau

Beau wasn't with me long. His first Gotcha Day was just last week. We had a mere 53 weeks together. He had at least 15 years in this world, although I have no idea where he spent most of them. Beau arrived here already elderly and battling renal failure and hyperthyroidism. I suspect he was an outdoor cat and his first family assumed he had gone off to die. Beau was pulled from the local high kill pound by a kind shelter worker who risked her job to save that cranky old cat. She hid him in the back of the shelter and called me as she knew I have a weakness for senior kitties. Beau came home later that day.
Beau was always a grouchy cat. When he first arrived, he didn't accept affection well. He would yowl and swat petting hands away. He did enjoy laying on a warm lap and over the year he was here, he grew to enjoy more and more attention. Last night he even spent some time snuggling on the bed with us. He was a man's cat and adored my hubby. They spent many evenings watching television together.
I took Beau to the vet this morning as he hadn't been eating very well and was lethargic. When the vet tried to start an IV, Beau had a massive seizure. They were unable to do anything to save him. Beau passed very quickly. I had a feeling when I dropped him off this morning that he would not be coming home tonight. I wish he had waited for me to hold his paw while he crossed, but he was an independant soul and took this journey alone.
I will miss his big voice and his demands for Fancy Feast at all hours. I did my best to make his last year a happy, content one. I hope he knows how much I enjoyed and loved him. I didn't know him long, but I will love and miss him forever.

For you and Beau to have found each other at this point in his cranky old life was a true blessing to both of you. You allowed him to know kindness and warmth, good food in his belly and affection from you and his dad. He went out the way he lived his life and methinks that's the way he wanted it. RIP, Beau boy.

Such a sweet tribute for a dear old boy -- Beau, may you rest in peace. The saying about "good things come to good people (and pets)" rings true! I'm thankful that Beau was able to live a happy (however, brief) life with you and Stuart - he was a good cat, just misunderstood :) until you found him!
Hugs, Betty

Regardless of what his previous 14 years were like, his last was the best that a cat can get.

I always said that Beau was such a distinguished gentleman. His eyes told a story of a hard life, but his last year was a very happy year and he passed knowing that he was loved.

Thanks everyone. It's awfully quiet in the house without him yelling at me for food all the time or for petting him too much, or for moving when I should be sitting still ect....he was rather opinionated!
I am having him cremated. I bought an urn on ebay today. The local place only has plain wooden boxes. They are very nice and I have several already, but they didn't feel right for Beau. This feels like the right urn for him:

I laughed out loud when I read the inscription. That was my Beau!

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Beau. I remember well his arrival in your home, and I knew he would be loved dearly for the rest of his days, however long that might be.
He knew he was loved and he knew you did all you could for him. He is now a young tabby again, carousing the RB and adding his opinions to how things are run up there.
{{{hugs}}} to you and Stuart at this difficult time.
RIP Beau, your grumpiness will be missed. :(
This may not be appropriate, but.......I can't help but wonder what wonderful senior kitty is going to be so lucky to fill the vacancy left by Beau..... ;)

Just saw this now... poor Beau. At least he knew love for the last year+ of his life. He may have been grumpy, but he was grateful for your love and security. The seniors tug at the heart strings... thank you for giving him a 2nd chance to know love.
