I couldn't bring myself to post this sooner, as it's been such a shock. Katie and Cricket both collapsed suddenly on Friday and died of liver failure on Saturday. Kym and Jas rushed them to the vet and did everything possible, but the girls slipped away. The vet just doesn't know what happened. None of the other cats--mine or the Goodnows'--seem to be affected. It's a heartbreaking mystery.

Katie

My beautiful Katie was about nine years old. She adopted me when she was about a year old. She tore a hole in the screen door to the back porch and moved right in. And she brought the family. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a pretty longhaired tuxie and five kittens curled up in a chair!

Katie's meow sounded more like a quack--something like "Mwat." She loved to cuddle with me or with one of the other cats, usually Hagrid or Lily. I'll miss her sprawling on top of me to sleep, and I'll miss her licking my face in the mornings. I'll miss her graceful presence in my life.

Cricket

I found Cricket when she was a kitten. She was playing in my yard and didn't want much to do with me until I brought out some food. That was all it took to win her over.

Cricket had feline hyperesthesia, which caused her to attack her tail. She chewed it so badly that it finally had to be amputated. The vet hoped that giving her antidepressants would cause her to leave the tail alone, but they didn't work--and she gained a lot of weight while she was taking them.

She was my pudgy little enforcer, who prowled the house slapping anyone who annoyed her (Hagrid was a frequent target). But she was so very affectionate with me. She loved her chin scritchies. I adored her sweet little face, her pink-and-black nose, her mitten paws (she and Katie were both polydactyls). Cricket was eight years old.

I will miss you always, my darling girls. I hope both of you know how much I loved you. Please look for a brown tabby named Keke at the RB--she's been waiting for more than 13 years, so she'll show you around.

Thank you, everyone.

The girls were special. Katie was so clever. Who knows how long she'd been living outside (I don't think she was feral because she warmed up to me immediately), but once she moved herself indoors she never showed the slightest interest in going out. She was so lovely and gentle.

And Cricket loved nothing better than a good snuggle. She hated sharing me with the other cats. I wish now that I'd been able to give her all the undivided attention that she wanted.

What a shock it is to read this sudden news. :( I am terribly sorry that you have lost Katie and Cricket. I especially loved your story about how Katie broke in with her kittens. She knew a good thing when she saw it. :)

Rest in peace sweet beautiful babies. Look after meowmie for us. She is having a hard time right now.

I am glad to say that Penny came by today, she brought Gatsby home with her, I felt so honored that after nearly 3 months he allowed me to be sweet to him. He adores his mom. Most times the adoration is on the owners side, and cats seem to feel that as long as we are serving them in their Regal manner they adapt well. Gatsby however is one that is reciprocal...............I have never seen any animal make such a turn around from simply hearing his mommies voice. I have to admit I cried, that reunion was better than anything I could have imagined. He like Katie and Cricket had Catitude! he is not fond of any other other cat, and truly was my challenging boy. To see him with his Mom was nothing short of amazing. I know Katie and Cricket are laughing at me, and I am glad they are!

Penny thank you so much for donating what what you did in the Girls honor, and I will make sure that a plaque goes up with the girls names. They were honored guests here and now are Honored Angels. Thank you

Oh wow, that is just awful, to lose two precious ones at once. I couldn't imagine what I would do if I'd lost two of my babies - losing one recently was bad enough. You have my deepest sympathy. Your two beautiful girls are lucky in that they got to cross over to the bridge together ...
