View Full Version : *Another encouraging update on the injured kitty!*

I got a call while driving this evening from someone who has a cat and a dog who does not like the cat. And the dog attacked the cat, injured it and the cat had to have surgery; part of its tail was removed. He wants to find a home for the cat as soon as possible. I had to bite my tongue to say "get rid of the dog, let the cat stay". No, I'm not anti-dog by any stretch, as you all know from the Bailey fiasco. But this is the second time this has happened, he told me. I asked him what he was going to do to protect the cat in the meantime and he said that he'd have to figure something out, so I fear for this cat's life. Admittedly, I don't know him well. He installed my countertops a couple of months ago and he saw that I had 7 cats and that led to a conversation about rescue. Since I was in my car, I couldn't help him much other than to tell him about PT and to post his story. That was several hours ago and I see that he hasn't posted. I will call him tomorrow and get as many details as I can and, hopefully, a picture. I'm maxed out w/cats but I'm scared that this dog is going to attack it again. I asked the cat's name and he said "Kiara". I asked if that's how he spelled it and he said "I don't know how to spell her name." So you can see how this cat rates in the family. Soooo....if you know of anyone who would be interested in at least fostering this kitty until a forever home can be found, I'd be so grateful. And I will talk to him tomorrow and get more info. But I'm moving more things into my new office tomorrow, so it'll be a while before I can post. :( Poor sweet kitty.

*APRIL 9* I waited all weekend to see if this guy would call me back. Nothing. So bright and early this morning, I called and got his wife. Get this: she drilled ME on whether or not this would be a permanent home for Kiara or a foster home because they don't want her to be UNHAPPY!!!!! I swear, an angel put a zipper on my lips because the things that I was thinking at that moment were not printable! Right now, Kiara is home, locked in a bathroom, with her tail amputated down to a stub, knowing that the dog is on the other side of the door. She said "I sure hope everyone remembers to close the door." I asked about Kiara's condition, prognosis, etc. and she said "Oh my vet agrees that we need to find a home for her right away but my daughter is a teenager and she doesn't want to part w/her unless she has a permanent home." So. I told her "This is a foster arrangement but if we can't find a home for her, I will take her myself." (Great time for that angel to unzip my lips. I heard myself say the words and out they came!)

I asked her if Kiara was caught up on all her shots, etc. and she said 'yes'. I asked her vet's name and SHE DIDN'T KNOW. I said "New vet?" She said "Oh no, we've gone to him for years. He's taken care of all of our dogs and cats." And she doesn't know his name???? I asked for the name of his practice and she at least knew that. Anyhow....I quickly put a call in to the foster lady and now I can't get ahold of HER! I've called her home and cell number. I don't want a lot of time to pass to give this doink time to think. I want Kiara out of that house ASAP. But we need to talk to the vet to find out when she can be transferred. She said that Kiara has never been outdoors, is scared to death and hides all the time. She's a black and white long hair who "used to have such a beautiful tail before this "accident". (her words) (This is why I don't carry a gun.)

I don't know what's happened to me in my old age. I used to be able to handle situations like this w/only a fair amount of stress. Now I find that I begin to tremble almost immediately and my vision becomes blurred because I get so angry at how people treat their animals! This woman said Kiara won't even let you hold her. To adopt her out is going to be one big feat, I can tell ya. She said "Well, how is she going to be protected from the other cats?" I assured her that Kiara would be isolated and well taken care of. If ever I wanted to b*tch slap someone, this woman was a candidate!

I apologize for all the exclamation points in this post. It means I'm shouting and I have to get it out somehow. But trust me, one way or another, Kiara is going to be out of that house!

*Things are looking better. My rescue friend finally returned my call and after talking, she assured me that she would contact these people and see to it that Kiara is removed from their home. She's waiting for a call from the rescue agency but she said that there should be no problem. And even if there is, she has already made up her mind to take Kiara anyhow and she'll work on adopting her out herself. But I haven't heard back from her and that was several hours ago. So I don't know if the family is giving her problems or what's going on. I don't know why I'm stressing so much over this. I've been through far worse w/cat rescue, etc. But I seem to be taking this one to heart more than usual.

Oh, I hope this kitty can get a home where it doesn't have to live in fear of getting attacked. :(
Thank you Mary, for doing everything you can for this kitty. :)

SIGH!!! Just gotta love people who could give a crap less about their pets, or value one more than the other.

How about we put him somewhere that he gets part of his leg bitten off, and then tell the ER doc, oh, we don't really know who he is, and he isn't all that important, just make it as cheaply done as possible.

Think he'd appreciate that?!

This sounds much like Bailey and Mike again. God bless you, Mary, for looking out for these beautiful creatures when their supposed "caretakers" can't be bothered.

In A Lot Of Homes The Dog Will Get Priority As They Are Considered To Be Friendlier Pets.
Thats Actually Thier Pack Instinct While Cats Are More Loners In The Wild.
I Pray That You Can Help That Cat.
Its Not The Dogs Fault As No One Has Trained Him That The Cat Is Not Prey.

I did find someone who said she would definitely foster Kiara. She was my neighbor and I got her involved in cat rescue and then stopped doing it myself. :o She told me that she just found a home for a foster and that she has an opening, so I jumped on it and said "Please, please, please hold that spot for this cat." and she said she would, plus her husband loves cats as much as she does and he said "That cat needs to get here now." Well. I've put in 3 calls to the family. Do you think anyone has returned my call? Aaaaaaaaaaargh! He apparently had called me from his business and he isn't checking voice mail. I hope he doesn't do something stupid, especially since this cat has a chance at a good life. So keep those prayers coming, friends. Kiara is healing after having part of her tail amputated and she's back in that home w/that mean dog! I could just cry.

PRAYERS for Kiara!

Is she an indoor kitty - or could you make her go 'poof'?

Yes, she's an indoor cat. I'm not sure I understand what you mean about going "poof".

When someone "poofs" a cat, they just take it - "poof", it disappears! This is in cases of neglect or cruelty.

Several PTrs have done that, including Catmandu.

If you know which vet they go to, I wonder if it would be ok to tell the vet your concerns and what you know...and say that there is an open foster spot for the cat.

I hope you get Kiara soon!

Unfortunately, I know nothing of this man other than he does beautiful countertop installation. He installed my countertops right after the holidays and he remembered that all of my cats are rescues. I called the number he called me from but no luck. And his home phone is unpublished. So I wait. If he doesn't call me on Monday, I'm going to do a search of vets in his town. It's about 45 minutes to an hour from me. And if I can locate the vet and give him details, hopefully the vet will pass the info on to him. I'm so mad I could spit!

Oh, I hope you're able to get hold of Kiara soon! You're doing a wonderful thing, rescuing her from such uncaring people.

Let's hope it's as simple as him being away for Easter, and not responding to any calls on his business number til after the holiday...

I hope you find her soon and get her to her foster home! I just cringe at the thought of that poor injured cat being put back into a house with a dog that already tried to kill her. Poor thing needs to go somewhere where she's loved properly.

Thank you for trying to help her.

The day he called me the cat was in surgery as we spoke. He said that his wife was going to pick her up at the vet's soon. I sure hope they didn't go away for the holiday and leave that cat in the house, recuperating alone from surgery, especially if that dog is there. I can't imagine that anyone would do such a thing but on the other hand, I can't imagine why someone would allow this poor cat to go through this trauma again and have surgery again because of this dog and their lack of love. The thing is, I've never been able to find a foster home that fast. On the first try? C'mon! And even though she promised me that she'd hold the spot, if another injured or abandoned cat comes along, I know she'll fill that spot and rightly so. Every cat deserves a chance. So please keep up the prayers and I'll definitely let you know what's happening as soon as I know.
