In regards of the Hugito scare made me think what are Pters allergic to...

some may be very "common" allergies, but as Karen stated sheīs allergic to several things many would think you canīt be allergic to.....

in my case Iīm allergic to egg..... yes, egg...... I canīt eat it..... of course I eat things that are made with eggs as cakes, hotcakes, I use eggs to make hamburgers and to season chicken..... sometimes it will give me a "mosquito bite" allergic reaction...... but egg on itīs own no way jose......

so, what are you allergic to?

Pennicilan is hte only thing I'm officially allergic to.

But the following foods give me instant migraines - the doctor says its like an allergy, only defined as an intolerance.:
raisins
pickles
yoghurt
alcohol
certain cheeses
certain chocolates
basically lots of things that are aged or fermented.

I don't think I'm allergic to anything officially.
I did have an allergic reaction to saline solution that I used for my contacts once but that's it...
Poor Karen - she's allergic to soooo many things. It would stink to eat at a pot luck!

Zippy_kat from New Mexico is allergic to milk, and lactose intolerant and allergic to breast milk, and the milk proteins. She tried talking calcium pills and was allergic to them. She can't use the philosophy 3 in 1 body washes b/c she is allergic to the milk proteins in them!!!

And how! Especially on Mondays.

I'm allergic to insect bites. When I get mosquito bites I get big red welts. I go through lots of Caladryl in the summertime.

When I worked in the hospital I developed a sensitivity to latex gloves. I got these red rashes all over my fingers and the backs of my hands. Now I'm an insurance nurse, so I'm not around latex gloves on a daily basis anymore. But I don't go to the party stores very often because there's latex in the air from balloons. Our dentist uses the high-tech blue ones which are non-allergic- at least he tells me they are non-allergic.

Besides almost all perfumed things, kitties, hydrangea, tree pollen, grass pollen, dust and dust mites, I have developed a myraid of food allergies over the past few years, so now have a running list I keep ...

Food: No pistachio, cashew, pecans, almonds or "tree nuts", chick peas, sesame seeds, garlic, no yogurt

Fruit: No mango, banana, pear, apricots, grapefruit, lemons, cherry or coconut, strawberries, cranberries, or oranges

Veggies: carrots, celery, sweet potato, malt, broccoli, cabbage, green peas, peppers of any color, cucumber, avocado, artichoke, yellow squash, green beans, green olives or olive oil

Meat: No beef. No lamb. No tuna fish, halibut, grouper, other fish. Lobster and Crab are okay as far as I know - Lady's Human is the opposite, reacts to Lobster and Crab but can eat all the fish he wants.

Odd: No Sucralose/Splenda sweetener, avoid drinks with "citric acid"

Add to that a huge sensitivity to smoke of any sort, and a massive reaction to pot smoke (as well as breathing difficulty, it feels like someone's driving a spike through my left eyebrow), hairspray, most cleaning products, the smell of ammonia, many colognes ...

I am just lucky that I am not allergic to soap - my mother was and sister is, so she has to use either glycerine (Pear's 'soap') or a specialty "soap' called Lowilla.

Aren'tcha glad you asked?

I'm allergic to dairy products. It was just an allergy to my ears, but I've become lactose intolerant over the years, also. I'm also allergic to fresh pineapple. I LOVE the stuff, but if I eat it, I simply cannot breathe. Yellow mustard also makes my mouth blow up and swell.

Dairy
Pineapple
Yellow Mustard
Red dye in medications - only a certain # of the dye, though

Pollen...big time.

And only until recently, I haven't been able to take ibuprophen...last couple times I did, my face got itchy, didn't swell, but felt like I was getting an allergic reaction to it...was kinda scary.

That is about it, that I can think of now.

Allergies - Bees, wasps, hornets, etc. If I dont get the bee needle in time, then i can possibly die most horribly. I've been stung lots of times (they like to sting me, and will search me out in a group to bite), and the reactions are getting worse and worse. I was rock climbing and one bit me on the arm, just above the elbow - i tied it off with a piece of rope to get to the hospital, and my entire arm looked like someone took a rubber glove and blew it up all the way to my fingertips.

Sensitivities - Wheat, gluten, yeast (so, anything thats a bread) makes me feel unwell for days afterwards; shellfish like lobster, crab and oyseters will make me throw up about 2 hours afterwards (and its really disgusting, but it will come up the same way it went down, completely undigested -- i guess my body can't process it. i may as well be eating rocks), but thankfully no other reaction than that.

Wierd Other - Aspartame and artificial sweeteners. Instant migrane, i've had 1/2 my body go numb a couple of times after drinking a can of diet soda. So, I avoid those, since I like to be able to see straight, and not feel like theres gnomes in my head with pickaxes.

Not a thing. *knock on wood*

My mom developed an allergy to cats, dogs, pollen, and pine when she was 21.

Andy is allergic to some dogs, all cats, and Senna.

The latter was scary as I was with him when he had it. Half his body went numb, his tongue slightly swelled up and he couldn't talk.

You DO carry an epi-pen, don't you? If you don't, you should, and should know how to use it.

Same for anyone who has a mouth-swelling-up reaction. I have one with me at all times because of my "tree-nut" (worst are almonds and pistachios) reaction. And, Blue_Frog, every "repeat exposure" means your reaction will be more extreme next time. Get yourself a prescription for an epi-pen!

Yep - EpiPen = BeeNeedle ... I should have said that instead of bee-needle since thats what i generally call it :) I carry one in my purse all the time, and I know how to use it, but haven't yet. I've let people around me know how to use it just in case - usually a lot of antihistimes take care of stings on the extremities, but I have the pen in case i get stung around the chest/throat/head etc. Its pretty scary sometimes, especially since i love to spend time outside. stoopid wasps  My mother has the same allergy, and has gone into anaphalactic shock before after a sting - we've had to use the pen on her before, and its a scary experience!

This usually gets a bit of a giggle, but I am allergic to dogs and cats. Straw darn near kills me. Filling the dog houses is not fun!

If it's outside, has leaves, flowers, drops pollen, I am allergic to it. The snow mould will be out in a few weeks. That's my cue to start taking my meds more. A large part of why I like winter so much is that the vast majority of my allergies disappear with the first snow. I rarely need medication in the winter.

I have a life threatening allergy to Aspirin. The rest are controlled with Reactine, Claritin, Flonase and some eye drops I can't recall the name of.

Oh my Karen! So what exactly DO you eat?? What's an example of what you have for breakfast, lunch, and supper?

There's stuff I can eat - that many cannot.

So if I read ingredients labels, I can have my cereal for breakfast, with milk.

For the other meals, pasta, odd salads (lettuce is okay, arugula is okay, but no dressing with olive oil or garlic in them ...), pasta, some "okay-if-I-make-it-myself soup" and of course, I can have chicken, turkey, eggs, and piggie products for protien. Bread is okay if I make sure there's nothing "malt" in the ingredients - try reading bread labels for a kick - I have found a "whole wheat" kind and a "white bread" kind that are safe ... so sandwiches, or make-it-myself pizza, as bread and cheese are okay, too ...

Also, JenBKR, when I first got my allergies tested, the little spot for dust mites swelled and swelled and grew over the other spots around it and made the nurse go "Oh, my!" and draw it on the chart. Dr. Baillit - a sniffly old guy who has since retired - made recommendations about various things and then asked, "Who does the vacuuming?"
"My husband ..." I said.
"Oh, he's a good one, then. You should keep him!"

Not the only reason I've kept Paul, but it was funny to have a doctor's opinion on the matter!

Officially:

Solo laundry detergent
Dianalysis (sp?) dye (darn near died when they tried that one  )
Sulfa drugs
The sun  (yes the SUN, I get sun poisoning if I don't apply frequently spf 50 at least!)

Unofficially:

Nightshade
molds
certain types of herbal shampoo/conditioners
guinea pigs (owned them for 10 years, but had to take alot of benadryl ;) )

Sensitivity to:

Any rough texture rubbing my skin (including whiskers, recently clipped dogs, short pokey haired pets, and even my own hair! )

Hubby is allergic to raw egg whites. He's ok if it's cooked well though. Bummer is he's never enjoyed the thrill of licking off the spoon from making cookies and cakes! :(

I'm allergic to insect bites. When I get mosquito bites I get big red welts. Me too- easily dime sized often larger

Pollen, Pennicilan, and my parents won't let me eat shellfish like clams because once my brother had an allergic reaction to it and he was rushed to the ER, so they don't want me even tasting it.

I think I'm allergic to Penicillin. When I was 3 years old my mom had an allergic reaction to Penicillin and apparently I said I was having the same symptoms, so I've never had Penicillin to this day...over 30 years later.
I am also sensitive to citrus fruits and juices. It makes sores in my mouth. Weird, I know.
I've never had an official allergy test in my life, so there are probably a million other things I am allergic to but just don't know it.
I think I just discoverd I might be allergic to Hyacinth flowers. I got some for my birthday and just about died in the car on my way home.

Oh gosh yes, hyacinths have such a strong perfume, and make me sick, as do Easter lillies, which means I am well-drugged with antihistamines to be able to sing Easter morning! Thankfully some people opt for tulips instead of lillies - my vote of course goes for the tulips!

Do you mean canker sores (kind of like mouth ulcers?). I know it's not conventional in any way, but Chinese people believe that there are "high-heat" foods that can cause or exacerbate canker sores. Ironically, citrus fruits and juices (pineapple is the worse) are among the main culprits, as are fried foods, chips, and a myriad of other food items. I don't completely understand the whole concept, but maybe that could be it...:D

I'm not allergic to anything in particular, but I'm lactose intolerant. No surprise there :)

Ibuprofen (a real bummer)

keflex

raw onions

cigarette smoke and the aromas of the plug-ins and expensive candles. Cheap candles are okay.

possibly sensitive to nuts, certain foods cause breathing problems and I think these are made with peanut oil, or it's the chocolate. Oddly enough I can eat cheap chocolate and have a Butterfinger bar.

Dust in general. I hate carpets

Spunky has asthma and allergies, carpets cause him problems, too.

I'm probably allergic to cat dander too, but since since I use most of the above (except ibuprofen), I can't see me losing the cats over an allergy.

Stress will aggravate my allergies before most of the above.

I'm mildly allergic to bees (found this out when I got stung in the eye and it swelled shut). Certain cleaners give me painful and itchy rashes (I usually wear long sleeves when going to a restaurant). Certain painkillers and blueberries make me sick. Pollen and dust do it to me, too. My throat becomes mildly irritated with pudding.

My husband is allergic to bleach and food colouring.

Yes, an epi-pen is an adrenalin shot - which it sounds like you should have on hand because of your pecan allergy. Talk to your doctor, as you need a prescrition to get one. I always carry one with me, just in case. If you use it, then you have to get to an ER, but it will generally give you enough time to actually get to the ER before your throat swells shut and you suffocate.

Oh! I am also a bit allergic to Daisy - none of the other cats, just Daisy. My eyes swell up badly if she comes too close. Not a thing as far as food and plants and ingested meds and such go.

But skin allergies... . If it is a cleaner, topical medicine, perfume or cologne, air freshener, scented soap or lotion, etc. it is just safer at this point to assume it will induce massive hives and swelling.

Those are the worst, aren't they?

YES!!!

I let them know ahead of time that I am very, very allergic.

And when they insist it is mild, she'll just spray it next to me instead of on me, or we should just try and see... it is time for plan B.

I pull out my cell phone and say "I have made you aware of the fact that I am highly allergic. If you choose to ignore that and spray it anywhere near me than I will be calling the police and pressing charges for assault."

Only once, when a door-to-door salesman sprayed it on a cloth and shoved it in my face, have I actually called the police. He went to jail, and I still have scars in a couple places where my psoriasis and skin allergies reacted so violently it actually made the skin split apart everywhere it had touched me for weeks after.

Karen
